China Absrac: A paern maching based racking algorihm, named MdcPaRec, is used for he reconsrucion of charged racks in he drif chamber of he BESIII deecor. This paper addresses he shorage of segmen finding in MdcPaRec algorihm. An exended segmen consrucion scheme and he corresponding paern dicionary are presened. Evaluaion wih Mone- Carlo and experimenal daa show ha he new mehod can achieve higher efficiency for low ransverse momenum racks. The Beijing Specromeer III (BESIII) [1] is a generalpurpose deecor wih 93% coverage of full solid angle. BEPCII and BESIII are powerful faciliies for he sudy of charmonium physics, D-physics, hadron specroscopy and τ physics []. From he ineracion area of he e + e beams o he ouside, here are 5 apparauses: a drif chamber (MDC) [3], which includes 43 layers of drif cells and is used for charged racking; a ime-of-fligh couner, which is composed of layers of scinillaor bars for measuring he fligh ime of peneraing charged paricles; an elecromagneic calorimeer, which comprises 64 CsI(Tl) crysals for he measuremen of phoon energy; a super-conducing solenoid magne, which provides a 1 Tesla magneic field and a muon couner, which includes 1 m resisive plae chambers, used for idenifying muon. MDC is a carbon fiber cylinder flowed wih a mixure of He and C 3 H 8 (He/C 3 H 8 = 6/4) as working gas, and wih signal and field wires srung beween he wo endcaps. The signal wires are operaed wih a high posiive volage, while he field wires are a ground volage. There are 6796 signal wires in oal; each of hem is surrounded by 8 or 9 field wires. The signal wires are grouped ino 43 layers, and hese layers are divided ino 11 s, wih he labels SL-J (from he inside o he ouside, J = 1,,, 11.). The SL-11 consiss of only 3 signal layers, while each of he oher 1 s includes 4 signal layers. In some s, he signal wires are parallel o he z axis of he MDC, so hese s are named axial s. In he oher s, he signal wires have a sereo angle wih respec o he z axis of he MDC, and hese s are named sereo superlayers. Axial (A) and sereo (U V, U means he sereo angle is negaive, V means he sereo angle is posiive) s follow he order UVAAAUVUVAA [3]. The small space around a signal wire and surrounded by he neighbouring field wires is called a drif cell. The secions of hese drif cells are nearly square in he plane perpendicular o he beam axis, wih he size of approximaely 1 1 mm in he innermos wo s and mm in he oher s. 2 No. X Ma Changli e al: An exended segmen paern dicionary for paern maching racking algorihm a BESIII wires are called his and are used o reconsruc rajecories of charged paricles. One basic offline C++ sofware algorihm for MDC rack reconsrucion a BESIII is a paern maching based racking package (MdcPaRec) [4], which exracs rack segmens from a se of his wihin a group of neighboring cells and links he segmens ino racks. For charged paricles wih high ransverse momenum (p ), he racking efficiency of MdcPaRec is saisfied for physics analysis. However, in low p range, he efficiency sill has a large space o improve. In his paper we propose an exended segmen consrucion scheme and is paern dicionary which is jusified o be helpful in he improvemen of lowp racking efficiency. MdcPaRec algorihm To inroduce he procedure of MdcPaRec, we lis he imporan glossaries firs: (1) Segmen. In a, a series of his of a charged paricle are defined as a segmen. The arc in Fig. 1 shows a rack. According o he segmen definiion, he 4 his a he 4 fired wires compose a segmen a segmen and an 8-wire group 4h layer 3rd layer nd layer 1s layer Fig. 1. A schemaic plo for illusraing a segmen and an 8-wire group. The 4 layers of circles denoe he signal wires in one. The arc shows a rack, and he black solid circles are he fired wires of he paricle. The 8 adjacen signal wires marked wih a cross compose an 8-wire group used o mach he segmen paern in segmen finding. () Segmen paern and segmen paern dicionary. The fired wire disribuion of a segmen in a is defined as a segmen paern. In presen MdcPaRec, segmen finder uses he his in he nd layer of a superlayer as seeds o search for segmens in every group of 8 signal wires, he relaive posiion of hese signal wires is graphically represened by he 8 wires marked by a cross in Fig. 1. A segmen paern is expressed by 8 bis of an ineger in C++ program: he fired wires are indicaed by 1, while he non-fired wires are indicaed by. For insance, he segmen paern illusraed in Fig. 1 is expressed wih 1111 in he binary number (77 in he decimal number). Segmen paerns are colleced o build a segmen paern dicionary. The procedure of MdcPaRec includes he following seps: firs o find segmens in all s by paern maching; hen o assemble segmens in axial superlayers ino circular racks and apply a circle fi. Second, o add segmens in sereo s o circle racks o consiue helix racks and apply helix fi. Afer helix fi, racks are reconsruced, and hey are sored for Kalman fi, racks exrapolaion, physics analysis and so on. 3 The shorage of 8-wire segmen paern in MdcPaRec The racking efficiency of MdcPaRec is saisfied for non-curled racks in he drif chamber. I loses some efficiency for low p racks due o he reduced efficiency for segmen finding wihin a. Azimuh coverage angle of segmen groups does no mee he requiremens for low p rack segmen finding. Drif cell size limis he azimuh coverage of segmen paern dicionary. We compare he azimuh coverage of an 8-wire segmen group wih he azimuh coverage of racks in a o es wheher he segmen group is large enough o reconsruc all possible segmens. We define a variable φ o describe he coverage of a segmen group along φ direcion, he definiion of φ is described by Eq. (1) φ = φ L L(L R) φ U R(U L), (1) where φ L L is he φ angle of he drif cell a he low lef corner of an 8-wire group, as displayed in Fig. 1; similarly, L R means he low righ corner, U L means he upper lef corner, and U R means he upper righ corner. The φ values of 8-wire segmen paern dicionary are lised in Table 1. We also define a variable, δφ, o describe he azimuh coverage of a rack in every superlayers along φ direcion. In he magneic field, δφ of a rack wih cerain p wihin a can be calculaed by Eq. (). r in δφ = arcan( 4r p rin rin) 4 r ou arcan( () 4r p rou rou). 4 In Eq. (), r in and r ou are he inner radius and ouer radius of a respecively; r p is he radius of a rack wih cerainp, which can be calculaed by Eq. (3) r p = p B z q, (3) where B z is he magneic field inensiy along he beam axis and q is he elecric charge of he paricle; all variables are expressed in he inernaional sysem of unis.
3 No. X Ma Changli e al: An exended segmen paern dicionary for paern maching racking algorihm a BESIII 3 The calculaed δφ are lised in Table. Comparing hese δφ wih φ lised in Table 1, we find ha he 8-wire segmen paern dicionary is no large enough o cover all segmens of some low p charged paricles. The wire groups used o search for segmens in he MDC are no all symmeric along φ direcion. If he amouns of wires of wo adjacen layers are he same, he wo layers are saggered exacly by a half drif cell along φ direcion, as shown in Fig. 1. Oherwise, he wo layers canno be placed in he exac saggered form. As a resul, he symmeric arrangemen of he wire groups in a superlayer is deermined by he amouns of wires in he four layers. From SL-1 o SL-5, he amouns of wires in each layer are no he same, and some 8-wire wire groups in hese s are asymmeric. Figure shows wo asymmeric 8-wire wire groups in SL-1. As shown in hese plos, he azimuh coverage of an asymmeric 8-wire wire group is smaller han ha of a symmeric one. Table 1 liss he minimum wire group coverages of 8-wire segmen paern dicionary in every ; as expeced, he asymmery of wire groups in SL-1 o SL-5 reduces he coverage of segmen paern. In addiion, he 8-wire segmen paern dicionary is designed based on he hypohesis of symmeric wire groups, and he dicionary doesn sui he asymmeric wire groups. y (cm) x (cm) y (cm) x (cm) Fig.. The azimuh coverages, i.e. φ (degree), of 8-wire and 14-wire segmen paern dicionary in each. The min value is he minimum coverage in a. The wire groups are no all symmeric in SL-1 o SL-5, so he minimum φ is smaller han he symmeric wire groups. In SL-6 o SL-11, all wire groups are symmeric, so he minimum φ is equal o ha of he symmeric wire groups. If he p of a paricle is smaller han 1 MeV/c, he paricle curls in he MDC. If heδφ is larger han he minimum coverage of 8-wire segmen paern dicionary in his, i is marked wih an underline. If he δφ is larger han he minimum coverage of 14-wire segmen paern dicionary in his, i is marked wih an overline. p (MeV/c) SL-1 SL- SL-3 SL-4 SL-5 SL-6 SL-7 SL-8 SL-9 SL-1 SL The exended segmen paern dicionary In Sec. 3, we explain 8-wire segmen paern dicionary which is no opimal in he azimuh coverage for racks wih lowp. In addiion, he asymmery of he wire groups aggravaes his problem. Hence, i is meaningful o broaden he 8-wire groups o larger wire groups and design an exended segmen paern dicionary for segmen finding. An easy way o broaden he coverage of he 8-wire segmen paern dicionary is o add a signal wire a each side of an 8-wire group on he 1s, he 3rd and he 4h layer, and an 8-wire group is exended o a 14-wire group as illusraed in Fig. 3. Comparing he azimuh coverage of paricle racks in Table wih he coverage of 14-wire segmen paern dicionary in Table 1, we can find ha he
4 No. X Ma Changli e al: An exended segmen paern dicionary for paern maching racking algorihm a BESIII 4 14-wire segmen paern dicionary can cover all segmens of differen racks excep he segmens in he ouermos, which a rack can reach. This ype of segmens has very large azimuh coverage angle and canno be reconsruced in an easy way. A new segmen paern dicionary is buil based on he 14-wire groups. Because he leas squares fiing is applied o he his of a segmen paern in segmen finding, a segmen paern requires 3 or more his. Therefore we build he dicionary wih 3-hi and 4-hi segmen paerns. A 4-hi segmen paern has a hi in every layer, and a 3- hi paern has 3 his in hree differen layers. For he 4-hi segmen paerns, here are 8 ( ) combinaions, bu some combinaions are obviously impossible and we remove hem, which are deermined by he relaive posiion of he signal wires in a 14-wire group. From SL-6 o SL-11, all wire groups are symmeric, and we build a unique segmen paern dicionary for hem. There is no significan asymmery from SL- o SL-5 and we find ha he dicionary based on symmeric wire groups is applicable. In SL-1, he asymmery of wire groups is more serious han any oher s, and we build a special segmen paern dicionary. Finally he segmen paern dicionary for s from SL- o SL-11 includes 3 4-hi segmen paerns and 56 3-hi segmen paerns, and he segmen paern dicionary for SL-1 includes 44 4-hi segmen paerns and 7 3-hi segmen paerns. Fig. 4 shows 6 4-hi segmen paerns. In C++ program, a 14- wire segmen paern is expressed by 14 bis in an ineger variable: he fired wires are marked by 1, while he oher signal wires are marked by.
