1 uclear Physics A uclear Physics A (8 5 Forward-backward multiplicity correlations in pp, p+pb and collisions with the ALAS detector arxiv:6.96v [nucl-ex] 6 Jan 6 Jiangyong Jia on behalf of the ALAS ollaboration hemistry Department, Stony Brook University, Y 794 and Physics Department, Brookhaven ational Laboratory, Y 796, USA Abstract wo-particle pseudorapidity correlations are measured in s =.76 ev, s = 5. ev p+pb and s = 3 ev pp collisions []. orrelation function is measured using arged particles in the pseudorapidity range <.4 with transverse momentum p >. GeV, and it is measured as a function of event multiplicity, defined by number of arged particles with <.5 and p >.4 GeV. he correlation function is decomposed into a short-range component (SR and a long-range component (LR. he SR differs significantly between the opposite-arge pairs and same-arge pairs, and between the three collision systems at similar multiplicity. he LR is described approximately by + a in all collision systems over the full multiplicity range. he values of a are consistent between the opposite-arge and same-arge pairs, and are similar for the three collision systems at similar multiplicity. he values of a and the magnitude of the SR both follow a power-law dependence on the event multiplicity. Keywords: heavy ion, pseudorapidity correlation, short-range correlation, long-range correlation. Introduction wo-particle correlations in azimuthal angle and pseudorapidity ( is an valuable tool to study the space-time dynamics of the heavy ion collisions. One important ent result is the observation of the longrange ridge correlation in pp and p+pb collisions, with a magnitude comparable to those observed in collisions at similar multiplicity []. here are presently significant debates on the origin of the apparent collectivity in small collision systems, whether this is a final state effect signifying a QGP-like matter or this is a initial state effect associated with strong QD field. o clarify the situation, it is crucial to understand the nature of the sources of particle production that seed these long-range collective ridges: What are these sources made of and how many? What are their sizes and distribution in the transverse dition? Forward-backward (FB multiplicity correlation provides a handle on these questions. Due to quantum fluctuations of the nuclear wavefunction, the number of colliding objects, participating nucleons or in general colliding partons, in the target and those in the projectile are not the same on the event-by-event (EbyE basis [3]. his asymmetry leads to correlation of particles with large pseudorapidity separation (long-range A list of members of the ALAS ollaboration and acknowledgements can be found at the end of this issue.

Many previous studies in this dition are based on FB correlations of particle multiplicity in two ranges symmetric around the centre-of-mass of the collision system. his study is based on measuring a simple -D correlation function in [5, 3]: (, = ( ( ( ( R( R(, R( ( (, ( where ( d/d is the multiplicity density distribution in a single event and ( is the average distribution for a given event-multiplicity class. he correlation function is ditly related to a singleparticle quantity R(, whi aracterizes the fluctuation of multiplicity in a single event relative to the average shape of the event class. he (, is constructed using the usual event-mixing method, and a renormalization procedure is used to remove the residual centrality dependence in (, with the resulting correlation function denoted by (, [3].. Results Figure shows the R( in three typical events in the -5% centrality interval []. he apparent non-uniform structures reflect both the statistical fluctuations and dynamical fluctuations of interest. he advantage of the correlation function is that the statistical fluctuations natrually drop out after the averaging (eq. and only the dynamical fluctuations remain. ( ( R( =.4. Events are classified according to the total number of onstructed arged particles, -4, with <.5 and transverse momentum p >.4 GeV. he magnitudes of the FB fluctuations are compared for the p+p s=3 ev -6 p+pb s =5. ev three systems at similar event multiplicity. As shown s =.76 ev -8 by Fig., the range of distribution is mu 3 broader in collisions than that in p+pb collisions whi in turn is mu broader than that in the Fig.. he distributions of number of onstructed tracks pp collisions. herefore, the probability for events with p >.4 GeV and <.5 in the three collision systems. aken from Ref. []. with large in pp collisions is mu smaller than that in collisions. One interesting question is whether the long-range multiplicity correlation is controlled by similar to the ridge phenomena or it also depends on other quantities. d/(d / evts
3 Jiangyong Jia on behalf of the ALAS ollaboration / uclear Physics A (8 5 3 Figure 3 shows arge dependent correlation functions in < multiplicity range. he correlation functions show a broad peak along associated with short-range correlations (SR, and a depletion at large associated with LR. he SR reflects correlations within the same source, while the LR reflects FB-asymmetry of the number of sources. he magnitude of SR differs by more than factor of three between same-arge and opposite-arge pairs, while the LR are nearly identical between the two arge combinations. Based on this, a data-driven method was developed to separate the SR from LR. he resulting SR denoted by δ SR (, and LR denoted by sub(, are shown in the middle and right columns, respectively. he SR extends nearly ± in independent of + +, and its magnitude is quantified by: δsr (, d d SR =, < Y =.4. ( 4Y he saddle-like shape of the LR is found to be well approximated by: suggesting that the dynamical fluctuation of R( is linear in. sub + a, (3 +- pairs < s - =.76 ev, 7 µb p >. []. Figure 4 compares the strength of SR in terms of SR and LR in terms of a between the three collision systems as a function of (the efficiency corted. All distributions follow a simple power law dependence on. However, the magnitude of SR is mu stronger in pp collisions than in collisions; in contrast the LR signal is found to be similar between the three collision systems. his is a nontrivial result as the distribution of as well as the sizes of the overlap region are very different between the three collision systems. he strength of the SR and LR is related to the number of sources n contributing to the final multiplicity, whi is the sum of the number of sources from the projectile and target nucleon or nucleus, n = n f +n b. he LR is expected to be related to the asymmetry between n f and n b :A n = n f n b n f +n b, a A n. he sources may be consists of participating nucleons part, sub-nucleonic degrees of freedom su as the fragmentation of scattered partons, or resonance decays. In an independent cluster model scenario [5], ea source emits the same number of pairs and the number of sources follows a Poisson distribution. In this picture, the strength of SR and LR should scale approximately as the inverse of the number of sources.
