Vol. 115, No. 4, November 23, Printed in India arxiv:math/512313v1 [math.ca] 14 Dec 25 An algebra of absolutely continuous functions and its multiliers SAVITA BHATNAGAR Deartment of Mathematics, Panjab University, Chandigarh 16 14, India MS received 28 February 25; revised 9 Setember 25 Abstract. The aim of this aer is to study the algebra AC of absolutely continuous functions f on [,1] satisfying f()=, f L [,1] and the multiliers of AC. Keywords. 1. Introduction Absolutely continuous function; Banach algebra; multilier. Let I = [, 1] be the comact toological semigrou with max multilication and usual toology. C(I),L (I),1 are the associated Banach algebras. Larsen [5] obtained multiliers for the Banach algebra L 1 (I). Baker, Pym and Vasudeva [1] obtain characterizations of multiliers from L (I) to L r (I),1 r,. Bhatnagar and Vasudeva [2] characterize Hom C(I) (L r (I),L (I)) and their re-duals for 1 r. Bhatnagar [3] studied Hom C(I) (L r (I),L (I)) and their re-duals for r >. The study of re-duals of the multiliers in [2] and [3] involved a dee understanding of the interolation theory and lengthy calculations. The multiliers can be obtained more attractively by abstract arguments. It turns out that results obtained via abstract arguments comare with those obtained in [2] and [3]. Our results also include the results obtained by Larsen [5]. L (I) is relaced by the Gelfand transform algebra AC, 1 of absolutely continuous functions f on [,1] with f()= and f L (I). With the norm defined as f = f, f AC,AC constitute subalgebras of C(I) and have an aroximate identity. The urose of this note is to study the multiliers from AC r to AC,1 r,. For r =, a comlete descrition of multiliers is obtained. For r<, the multilier algebra consists of{} alone. In case of r> we rovide a set of necessary and another set of sufficient conditions for a function in C(, 1] to be a multilier. An examle of a function which satisfies the necessary conditions but does not satisfy the sufficient conditions and fails to be a multilier is also rovided. 2. The Banach algebra AC Let I = [,1] with the usual interval toology be the comact metric sace and C(I) be the set of all continuous comlex valued functions on I. For 1, let AC ={ f C(I): f is absolutely continuous on I, f()= and f L (I)}. 383
384 Savita Bhatnagar Define f = f, f AC. For 1, let denote the conjugate index to, that is, = 1. The following inequality will be frequently used in the sequel. For g AC,1< <, g(t) = t g t (s)ds ( t 1/ g (s) ds g (s) ds) t 1/ g, for g AC 1, g(t) g 1, and for g AC, g(t) g.t, (1) using Holder s inequality. Lemma 1. Let f be continuous on [,1], absolutely continuous on [,1] for any with < 1 with f L 1 [,1]. Then f is absolutely continuous on[,1]. The roof is elementary. Theorem 2. AC is a Banach subalgebra of C(I). It has an aroximate identity for 1 <. AC has no aroximate identity. The maximal ideal sace (AC ) of AC,1 is homeomorhic to (,1]. Moreover, AC r AC for r>. Proof. Clearly AC is a Banach sace. For f,g AC, ( f g) = f g+ f g L (I) as f,g L (I) and f,g are bounded. Moreover, f g = ( f g) g f + f g. Since g AC, g(t) g = g, using (1), and so g g. Similarly f f. Consequently, f g 2 f g. Thus AC is a Banach algebra. Define e (t)=min{t/,1},t I. Then e (t)= 1 χ [,)(t). We show that {e } forms an aroximate identity for AC,1 < as +. Now So e g g = (e 1)g + e g (e 1)g + e g. ( e g = 1 g(t) ) 1/ dt 1 ( ( t ) 1/ g (s) ds t dt) /, using (1). e g 1 g χ [,] ( = 1 g χ [,] ( = 1/ g χ [,]. ) 1/ t / dt ) 1/
Absolutely continuous functions and its multiliers 385 Also ( (e 1)g = t ) 1 1/ g (t) dt g χ [,] as t 1 1 for t [,]. Thus e g g ( 1/ + 1) g χ [,] as + because g L (I),1 <. Next, if g AC and g = K then g(t) = t g (s)ds Kt and (tg) = tg + g 2Kt for all t I. So tg t = tg + g 1 lim t 1 2Kt = 1. So AC has no aroximate identity. We now find the maximal ideal sace (AC ) of AC. Clearly, AC searates strongly the oints of [,1] and is self-adjoint. If f AC and a=inf t 1 f(t) >, take g= f f 1. Then g = f, so that g f L (I), i.e., ( f 1) 2 a 2 g AC and g f = g+ f g f =. Thus f is quasiregular in AC. It follows using Corollary of Rickart [7] that the maximal ideal sace (AC ) of AC is homeomorhic to (C(I))=I under the natural embedding. Since for f AC, ˆf()= f()= we get that (AC ) of AC is homeomorhic to (,1]. Finally, for r>, f AC r we have f L r (I) L (I), so that f AC. The inclusion AC r AC is indeed roer as L r (I) is a roer subset of L (I) for r>. This comletes the roof. Note that the aroximate identity {e } is bounded if =1 and is unbounded if 1< <. Also with our methods the case = has been solved comletely whereas in [1] the maximal ideal sace of L (I) could not be calculated. 3. The multilier sace A maing T on a commutative Banach algebra A to itself is called a multilier if T(xy)= xt(y) = T(x)y, x, y A. If A is semisimle and T: A A is a multilier then there exists a unique bounded continuous function m on (A) such that ˆTx = m ˆx for all x A and m T (. 19 of [4]). Since for g AC,ĝ(t)=g(t),t (,1],AC is a semisimle Banach algebra, a multilier T: AC AC is a ma satisfying Tg = mg,g AC for some continuous bounded function m on (,1]. The following theorem gives necessary and sufficient conditions for m C b (,1] to be a multilier of AC. Theorem 3. A ma T : AC AC,1 is a multilier iff there exists an m C b (,1] such that for each ε >,m is absolutely continuous on [ε,1],m L [ε,1] and m χ [ε,1] = O(ε 1/ ). (Treat ε 1/ = 1 for =1.) Proof. Suose T is a multilier of AC. Then there exists m C b (,1] such that Tg=mg. Let the norm of the multilication oerator be N. Then Tg = mg N g,g AC. As me AC and e = 1 on [,1], we get that m is absolutely continuous on [,1],m L [,1] and me N e =N e = N 1/.
386 Savita Bhatnagar and Also for 1 <, me = m e + me = 1 m e + me (t)dt+ 1 m e + me (t)dt m (t)dt as e = 1 and e = on[,1]. So ( 1 m (t)dt) 1/ N 1/ or m χ [,1] = O( 1/ ). For =, so that me = m e + me (m e + me ) χ [,1] = m χ [,1] me N e =N e = N/ m χ [,1] = O(1/). Conversely, suose m C b (,1] satisfies, m is absolutely continuous on [ε,1],m L [ε,1], m χ [ε,1] = O(ε 1/ ) for ε > and g AC. As g()= we have that mg has a continuous extension to[,1] by assigning mg()=. We first show that(mg) L (I). Now (mg) = mg + m g. Since m C b (,1] and g L (I), we get that mg L (I). It remains to rove that m g L (I). For = 1, = and m χ [ε,1] 1 = O(1) imlies that lim 1 ε ε m (t) dt exists, so m L 1 (I). Also g AC 1 is bounded so m g L 1 (I) and m g 1 m 1 g 1, using eq. (1). For 1< < and < 1/4, 2 2 ( s m (s) g(s) ds m (s) g (t) dt) ds ( 2 g (t) dt) A /,where A is a constant ( 2 ) = A g (t) dt 1 ( 2 ) 4 = B g (t) dt s ds, 2 where B= A( 1) 2 1 is a constant, 41 4 ( s B s g (t) dt) ds = B ( 1 s g (t) dt) ds. s
Absolutely continuous functions and its multiliers 387 Adding these inequalities for = 1/4, 1/8, 1/16,..., we get 1/2 1 ( 1 s ( ) m (s) g(s) ds B g (t) dt) ds B s 1 g < as 1 s s g (t) dt L (,1] by Hardy s inequality [8]. Also, 1 1/2 m (s) g(s) ds g A (1/2) / <, using eq. (1) so that m g L (I) and m g ( B ( + 1) ) 1/ g A (1/2) /. For =, let g AC. Then g(t) = t g (s)ds t g. Now m gχ ( ] 1 1 A2 n g 1 = 2A g 2 n, 2 n 1 2 n 1,n=1,2,3,... Therefore m g 2A g < or m g L (I). That mg is absolutely continuous follows from Lemma 1 as mg is absolutely continuous on [ε, 1] for all ε >, continuous at and (mg) L (I) L 1 (I). Thus m is a multilier. It is easy to see that the norm of the multilier T given by m is m + m 1, =1 T = su m g+mg g =1 This comletes the roof. ) m + ( B ( 1 ) 1/, +A(1/2) / 1< < m + 2A, = Remark. For = 1,m C b (,1] is a multilier of AC 1 iff m is absolutely continuous on [ε,1] for each ε > and m L 1 (I), i.e., iff m is absolutely continuous on I, using Lemma 1 as m being bounded can be continuously extended to [,1]. Thus Theorem 3 includes the results of [5]. Multiliers from AC r to AC,r are given by continuous functions m C(,1] which may not be bounded. Theorem 4. If T : AC r AC is a multilier, r<, then T =. Proof. Let T : AC r AC be a multilier, r <. Then there exists a function m C(,1] such that T g=mg. If m, then there exists s (,1] such that m(s ). By continuity there is an ε > such that m(t) >k/2 for t (s ε,s + ε)=n, say. Here k= m(s ). For t N, or (mg) (t) = (m g+mg )(t) m(t)g (t) m (t)g(t) k 2 g (t) m (t)g(t) k 2 g (t) (mg) (t) + m (t)g(t). ( ) For g = e, < s ε and t N, (mg) (t) = m (t)g(t)+m(t)g (t) = m (t). Thus m L (N). From( ), 2 k g (t) (mg) (t) + m (t) g r L (N) for all g AC r. A contradiction. So m=..
388 Savita Bhatnagar The multiliers from AC r to AC,r > are given by continuous functions on (,1] which are locally in AC. The following theorem rovides necessary growth conditions on m for m to be a multilier from AC r to AC,r>. Theorem 5. Let T : AC r AC,r > be a multilier given by T g=mg,g AC r. Then for ε >, m is absolutely continuous on[ε,1],m L [ε,1] and m χ [ε,1] = O(ε 1/r ). Proof. (Similar to the roof of Theorem 3.) Let the norm of the multilication oerator T be N. Then T g = mg N g,g AC r where the norm on the left-hand side is in AC and the norm on the right-hand side is in AC r. Since e AC r, (me ) N e r gives (as in Theorem 3) m χ [,1] N 1/r so that m χ [,1] = O( 1/r ). The following theorem gives sufficient conditions to be satisfied by m C(, 1] to be a multilier from AC r to AC,r> >1. Theorem 6. If r> >1,m L v (I) C(,1], where 1 v = 1 1 r,m is absolutely continuous on[ε,1] for all ε > and n=1 (2 n/r P n m ) <, then Tg=mg defines a multilier from AC r to AC. Here P n m = m χ (2 n,2 n+1 ]. Proof. For g AC r,g()=. Since m L v (I) C(,1],m(t)=O(t 1/v ) in a neighbourhood of so that mg(t) A g r t 1/v+1/r = A g r t 1/, using (1). As >1, < we get lim t mg(t)= so mg can be continuously extended to[,1] by assigning mg()=. Now (mg) = m g+mg. Since m L v (I) and g L r (I), it follows that mg L (I). We show that m g L (I). Relacing g(t) by t g (s)ds we get for n=1,2,3,..., 2 n+1 ( t m (t) g (s) ds) dt 2 n m g (t)dt 2 n 2 n+1 m (t) ( g 2 n r t ) dt, using (1), ( ) 1 /r 2 n+1 g r 2 n 1 m (t) dt. 2 n 2 n+1 Adding for n=1,2,3,..., we get ( ) m g g r 2 (n 1)/r 2 n+1 1/ m (t) dt <, n=1 2 n since g L r (I) and n=1 (2 n/r P n m ) <. Thus(mg) L (I) L 1 (I). That mg is absolutely continuous on I follows from Lemma 1 so that mg AC. This comletes the roof.
Remarks. Absolutely continuous functions and its multiliers 389 (1) For f L r (I),t 1 r 1 1 t f(s)ds L (I) for r, see [6]. The generalized Hardy s inequality is not available in the case of r> as in the case of r=, so we get a set of necessary conditions and another set of sufficient conditions for multiliers in the case r>. (2) It is easy to see that the condition m χ [ε,1] = O(ε 1/r ) is equivalent to su n 2 n/r P n m <. (3) The results of Theorems 3 and 4 comare with those in [2] in view of Remark 2. In [3], we get that m is a multilier from L r (I) to L (I),r > if m L v (I) and n=1 (2 n/r P n m ) v <, since 1 v = 1 1 r < 1, <vandl l v. Thus the results obtained in Theorem 6 are contained in the results of [3] whereas the necessary conditions in Theorem 5 comare with those in [3]. The following examles have bearing on the above said necessary and sufficient conditions. Examle 1. If m(t)= t 1/v+δ,<δ < 1/v then m(t) L v (I) C(,1], m is not bounded and n=1 (2 n/r P n m ) <. Thus the sufficiency conditions of Theorem 6 are satisfied so m defines a multilier from AC r to AC, r> >1. Examle 2. If m(t)=t 1/v then m / L v (I). Also n=1 (2 n/r P n m ) =. So m does not satisfy the sufficiency conditions given by Theorem 6 but 1 ε m (t) dt = O(ε /r ) so that necessary condition given by Theorem 5 is satisfied. However, if we take g(x) = x t 1/r (1 lnt) 2/r dt,x I then g AC r but mg / AC if r 2 (one can check that (mg) / L (I).) So m does not define a multilier from AC r to AC, <r 2.
