We shall prove, in the case of rank one projection operators, that the generating operators for such multipliers are either Riesz bases (exact frames) or not frames for their closed linear spans. The same dichotomy conclusion is valid for general rank one operators under mild and natural conditions. This is relevant since discrete Gabor multipliers have an emerging role in communications, radar, and waveform design, where redundant frame decompositions are increasingly applicable. In this context, the dichotomy theorem we shall prove, under mild necessary conditions on g and h, is that {ρ(λ)p g,h } λ Λ is a Riesz basis for its closed linear span in the space HS(R d ) of Hilbert Schmidt operators, or it is not a frame for this span. The reason for the abstraction to the setting of HS(R d ) for our theorem is the emerging importance of Gabor multipliers [9 2], and the revitalization of underspread operators in the mathematical community, e.g., [3]. These are introduced in Section 5. We begin in Section 2 with mathematical preliminaries concerning Gabor analysis, Hilbert Schmidt operators, and shift invariant spaces. Section 3 contains a precise statement and proof of our main result, mentioned above, as well as some related results. Section 4 is devoted to relevant examples. 2
3 2 Preliminaries Throughout this paper we shall use standard notation from harmonic analysis and in particular Gabor analysis as found in [7]. For example, we shall use the unitary Fourier transformation F on L 2 (R d ) which is normalized to satisfy Fg(γ) = ĝ(γ) = g(y)e 2πiy γ dy, γ R d, for g L (R d ) L 2 (R d ). A discussion of the validity of (5) entails Bessel sequences, Gabor frames, and Riesz bases, notions we now define. Let g L 2 (R d ) and let Λ R d R d be a full rank lattice. A Bessel sequence (g, Λ) is a frame for L 2 (R d ) if C g is also stable, i.e., if f L 2 (R d ) C g f l 2 (Λ) for f L 2 (R d ), and it is a Riesz basis (bounded unconditional basis) for its closed linear span in L 2 (R d ) if T g is stable in addition to being bounded, i.e., if {c λ } l 2 (Λ) T g {c λ } L 2 (R d ), for {c λ } l 2 (Λ). The right hand side of (5) is well defined if the Gabor systems (g, Λ) and (h, Λ) are Bessel sequences. Further, if (g, Λ) and (h, Λ) are frames, then the operator S g,h : L 2 (R d ) L 2 (R d ), f λ Λ V g f(λ) π(λ)h is an algebraic and topological isomorphism. If (g, Λ) and (h, Λ) are frames, and S g,h = I : f f,we say that (h, Λ) is a dual frame of (g, Λ) [7]. Fundamental to the analysis of Gabor systems (g, Λ) is the volume Λ of the full rank lattice Λ, which is given by Λ = det A where A is chosen such that AZ 2d = Λ. In fact, if (g, Λ) is a Riesz basis for its closed linear span in L 2 (R d ), then Λ ; and if (g, Λ) is a frame for L 2 (R d ), and therefore complete in L 2 (R d ), then Λ. In the case that Λ has critical density, i.e., if Λ =, and (g, Λ) is a frame for L 2 (R d ), then (g, Λ) is automatically a Riesz basis for L 2 (R d ), or, equivalently, an exact frame for L 2 (R d ), i.e., (g, Λ) ceases to be a frame if any one of its elements is removed. In case Λ <, any frame (g, Λ) for L 2 (R d ) is non exact (overcomplete), and one can remove any finite number of elements from (g, Λ) and the resulting family remains a frame for L 2 (R d ). Further, if Λ <, then, for any g L 2 (R d ), there exists non trivial {c λ } λ Λ l 2 (Λ) \ {0} for which 0 = λ Λ c λ π(λ)g in L 2 (R d ). The uncertainty principle provides insight into any decomposition such as (5) [4 9]. For example, in the case of Gabor systems one manifestation of the uncertainty principle is the Balian Low theorem [20 22], which asserts that if (g, Λ) is a Riesz basis for L 2 (R d ), in which case we have Λ =, then g cannot be well localized in time and frequency, in the sense that ( ) ( y g(y) 2 dy ) η ĝ(η) 2 dη = (6) must occur. 5 S 0 (R d ) is the Banach algebra composed of those functions f L 2 (R d ) with the property that V g0 f L (R d R d ) for the Gaussian g 0 (x) = e x 2, x R d. The norm f S0 (R d ) = V g0 f L (R d Rd ) gives S 0(R d ) a Banach algebra structure under pointwise multiplication and/or convolution. For equivalent definitions of S 0 (R d ), as well as basic theory, see [23]. 2.2 Hilbert Schmidt operators A Hilbert Schmidt operator H HS(R d ) is a compact integral operator on L 2 (R d ), i.e., H is defined by Hf(x) = κ H (x, t)f(t) dt = κ H (x, x t)f(x t) dt a.e., f L 2 (R d ), with kernel κ H L 2 (R 2d ). The space of Hilbert Schmidt operators is a Hilbert space with inner product H, H 2 HS = κ H, κ H2 L 2 [24,25]. Our use of families of Hilbert Schmidt operators is carried out on a symbolic level. The question of asking if {T λ σ Pg,h } λ Λ is a frame or Riesz basis for the closed shift invariant space generated by {T λ σ Pg,h } λ Λ in L 2 (R d R d ) can be answered using zero set criteria for spectral periodizations, e.g., [27,28,8] and Theorem Shift invariance of functions defined on phase space We have reduced the analysis of sequences {ρ(λ)p g,h } λ Λ of Hilbert Schmidt operators in HS(R d ) to the analysis of function sequences {T λ σ Pg,h } λ Λ in L 2 (R d R d ). Since the sequences {ρ(λ)p g,h } λ Λ are defined on phase space, we shall state a symplectic version of Theorem.4. in [8] as Theorem 2., part b. The Fourier version of Theorem 2., part a, is well known and elementary to prove; and so the proof of Theorem 2., part a, is also straightforward. To illustrate the important role of the adjoint lattice and, consequently, the symplectic Fourier transformation, in time frequency analysis, we mention the fact that (h, Λ) is a Riesz basis for its closed linear span in L 2 (R d ) if and only if (h, Λ ) is a frame for L 2 (R d ) [3,30]. Theorem 3., part a, is essentially Feichtinger s theorem; and is, itself, the motivation for Theorem 3., parts b and c. Theorem 3., part b, and Theorem 3.2 are precise statements of our main theorem which was stated without hypotheses in Section. We emphasize that this is a dichotomy theorem, asserting that {ρ(λ)p g,h } λ Λ is either a Riesz basis or not a frame for its closed linear span in HS(R d ). Theorem 3. Let g, h L 2 (R d ) and let Λ R d R d be a full rank lattice. a. The family {ρ(λ)p g,h } λ Λ is a Riesz basis for its closed linear span in HS(R d ) if and only if P Λ V h g 2 on R d R d Λ. b. Obviously, this criteria cannot be fulfilled for continuous G, and Lemma 3.5 therefore implies Theorem 3., part b, for the case that (g, Λ) and (h, Λ) are Bessel sequences. c. To prove Theorem 3., part c, let us observe that g, h S 0 implies that P Λ V g g 2 converges absolutely and uniformly on R d R d Λ [7], page 255. The fact that (αλ) = α Λ completes the proof. Proof of Theorem 3.2. See the proof of Theorem 3., part b. Remark 3.6 The hypotheses in Theorem 3., part b, and Theorem 3., part c, can be weakened considerably. For example, we could replace the Bessel sequence hypothesis on (g, Λ) and (h, Λ) in Theorem 3., part b, with the hypothesis that Fs {V h h(λ)v g g} λ Λ be continuous on R d R d Λ; and the hypothesis that g, h S 0 (R d ) in Theorem 3., part c, can be replaced with the hypothesis V h g 2 S 0 (R d R d ). 4 Examples Let us now provide examples illustrating our results for the case d =. The first example in the case of a Gaussian was pointed out to us by Hans Feich- 0
11 tinger. Example 4. For g S 0 (R) with V g g(λ) 0 for all λ R R, e.g., let g be a Gaussian, say g(x) = e x2. Then {ρ(λ)p g,h } λ Λ is a Riesz basis in HS(R) for any full rank lattice Λ. Example 4.2 There exist non exact frames in HS(R) of the form {ρ(λ)h} λ Λ where H is not rank one. For example, we may define H by means of its Kohn Nirenberg symbol by choosing F s σ H = [0,] 2 and Λ = (Z Z). Since 2 {M λ F s σ H } λ Λ forms a non exact frame for its closed linear span in L 2 (R R), so does {T λ σ H }; and, therefore, {ρ(λ)h} λ Λ forms a non exact frame for its closed linear span in HS(R). Note that any such example implies σ H / S 0 (R R), since otherwise P Λ σ H 2 is continuous. Example 4.3 There also exist non exact frames in HS(R) of rank one operators with smooth kernels, e.g., let g 0 be a Gaussian and set Λ = {(n, m 2 )} m,n Z. Then (g 0 g 0, Λ Λ) is a frame for L 2 (R R) and we obtain that {π(λ)p g π(λ )} λ,λ Λ is a non exact frame (for its closed linear span in HS(R)) composed of rank one operators. 14 In applied harmonic analysis frequency domain multipliers, i.e., convolution operators, Mŝ : f s f where ŝ f = ŝ f, are widely used, e.g., to model time invariant channels in signal processing. Here, we shall consider operators which are composed of an analysis operator C : L 2 (R d ) L 2 (X), whose range consists of real or complex valued functions or sequences, a pointwise multiplication by a fixed function (sequence) s on X, i.e., by the symbol s of the operator, and a synthesis operator T : L 2 (X) L 2 (R d ). The operator G m in (4) is well defined and bounded on L 2 (R d ), if, for example, the Gabor systems (g, Λ) and (h, Λ) are Bessel sequences and if {m λ } l (Λ). Thus, (g, Λ) and (h, Λ) are dual Gabor frames for L 2 (R d ) if and only if G = Id L 2 where λ = for all λ Λ. Discrete Gabor multipliers on L 2 (R) can be used to model time varying filters in communications engineering. While a convolution operator represents a time invariant filter which allows the removal of global frequency components in a signal, a Gabor multiplier allows for the decimation of a frequency band [Ω, Ω 2 ] during a time interval [T, T 2 ] by setting m λ = 0 for λ = (x, ξ) [T, T 2 ] [Ω, Ω 2 ] Λ R R. If (g, Λ) is an orthonormal basis of L 2 (R d ), and, therefore Λ =, and if h = g, then, discrete Gabor multipliers associated to (g, Λ) are exactly those operators mapping L 2 (R d ) to L 2 (R d ) which are represented by bi infinite diagonal matrices with respect to the orthonormal basis (g, Λ). In this case, the operator G m in (4) is bounded if and only if {m λ } λ Λ is bounded, and G m is stable if and only if { m λ } λ Λ is well defined and bounded. Nevertheless, families of Gabor multipliers associated to Gabor frames (g, Λ) and (h, Λ) are not simultaneously diagonalizable in general if Λ <. A contribution to the study of Gabor multipliers in the case Λ = is given in 4
15 terms of operator identification in Theorem 5.2. This result further illuminates the role of the critical density Λ = in the theory of Gabor multipliers. Recall that Figure.A and Figure.B show that {ρ(λ)p g,h } λ Λ may or may not be a Riesz basis for its closed linear span in the space HS(R d ), regardless if Λ <, Λ =, or Λ >. Definition 5. Since {m λ } l 2 G m HS by hypothesis, identification of G(g, h, Λ) by f is equivalent to the fact that the operator Φ f : l 2 (Λ) L 2 (R d ), {m λ } G m f is bounded and stable. Let M be the multiplication operator given by M : l 2 (Λ) l 2 (Λ), {m λ } {m λ f, π(λ)g } and observe that we have Φ f = T h M. The multiplication operator M is bounded since f, π(λ)g f S 0 g S0 for all λ Λ and, therefore, M{m λ } l 2 f S 0 g S0 {m λ } l 2. By assumption, we have Φ f is stable and T h is bounded, and, hence, M is stable, i.e., { f, π(λ)g } is bounded. This implies that M is onto as well, and therefore M is an homeomorphism. Since Λ <, T h is not stable, and, since M is bounded and onto, this contradicts the assumption that the operator Φ f is stable. Identifiability results such as Theorem 5.2 can be found in [3]. There, it is shown that classes of Hilbert Schmidt operators with bandlimited symbols are identifiable if and only if the so called spreading support has volume less than or equal to one. Similarly, it is shown that classes of Gabor frame operators are identifiable if and only if Λ. Additional applications of the time frequency analysis of such operators are found in [30,39 48].
