Nonextensve thermodynamcs of the two-ste Hubbard model arxv:cond-mat/ v [cond-mat.stat-mech] 3 Aug 2004 Hdeo Hasegawa Department of Physcs, Tokyo Gakuge Unversty Kogane, Tokyo , Japan (Aug. 3, 2004) Abstract Thermodynamcal and magnetc propertes of the half-flled, two-ste Hubbard model have been dscussed wthn the framework of the Tsalls nonextensve statstcs. The temperature dependence of the entropy, specfc heat and magnetc susceptblty and the magnetc-feld dependence of the magnetzaton have been calculated for varous values of the entropc ndex : the result for = n the nonextensve statstcs reduces to that of the Boltzman-Gbbs statstcs. Our calculatons have demonstrated that calculated propertes are sgnfcantly changed even for a small devaton of from unty. e-mal: hasegawa@u-gakuge.ac.jp
2 INTRODUCTION In the last several years, there s an ncreased nterest n the nonextensve statstcs (NES), whch was ntally proposed by Tsalls [][2]. Ths s because the standard method based on the Boltzman-Gbbs statstcs (BGS) cannot properly deal wth nonextensve systems where the physcal uantty such as the energy and entropy assocated wth N partcles s not proportonal to N. The nonextensvty has been reported n three dfferent classes of systems: (a) systems wth long-range nteractons, (b) small-scale systems wth fluctuatons of temperature or energy dsspatons, and (c) multfractal systems [3]. In the gravtatng system wth the long-range nteracton, whch s a typcal case (a), the specfc heat becomes negatve [4]. A cluster of 47 sodum atoms, whch belongs to the case (b), has been reported to show the negatve specfc heat [5]: note that the specfc heat s never negatve n the canoncal BGS [6]. Tsalls [][2] has proposed a generalzed entropy defned by S = k B p, () where k B s the Boltzman constant (k B = hereafter), p denotes the probablty dstrbuton of the system n the th confguraton, and the entropc ndex. Note that S BG, the entropy of BGS, s obtaned from E. () n the lmt of, as gven by S = S BG = p lnp. (2) The nonextensvty n the Tsalls entropy s satsfed as follows. Suppose that the total system s dvded nto two ndependent subsystems wth the probablty dstrbutons, p () and p (2). The total system s descrbed by the factorzed probablty dstrbuton p j = p () p (2) j. The entropy for the total system gven by E. () satsfy the relaton: S = S () + S (2) + ( )S () S (2), (3) where S (k) denotes the entropy of the kth subsystem. Euaton (3) shows that the entropy s extensve for = and nonextensve for. The uantty expresses the measure of the nonextensvty. When s smaller (greater) than unty, t s referred to as the superextensvty (subextensvty). The new formalsm has been successfully appled to a wde range of nonextensve systems ncludng physcs, chemstry, mathematcs, astronomy, geophyscs, bology, medcne, economcs, engneerng, lngustcs, and others [3].
3 In ths paper, we wsh to apply the NES to the Hubbard model, whch has been wdely adopted for a study n condensed matter physcs. The model provdes us wth good ualtatve descrpton for many nterestng phenomena such as electron correlaton, magnetsm and superconductvty. Despte ts smplcty, however, t s very dffcult to obtan ts exact soluton. In order to get a reasonable soluton, varous techncal methods have been developed. It s possble to employ a small number of lattce model to get an analytcal soluton. The two-ste Hubbard model s employed as a smple model whch can be analytcally solved. Thermodynamcal and magnetc propertes of the two-ste model have been studed wthn the BGS [7][8]. Although the two-ste Hubbard model s a toy model, t s an exactly solvable uantum system. Actually ths model may be adopted to descrbe an nterestng phenomena n real systems such as organc charge-transfer salt [9]. Because the two-ste Hubbard model s consdered to belong to the case (b) of smallsze systems mentoned above, t s worthwhle to apply the NES to the model and to nvestgate nonextensve effects on ts thermodynamcal and magnetc propertes, whch s the purpose of the present paper. The paper s organzed as follows. After brefly revewng the NES for the uantum system, we have derved, n Sec. II, expressons for the specfc heat, magnetzaton and susceptblty both n the BGS and NES. In Sec. III some numercal results of above uanttes are presented for varous value of the entropc ndex. The fnal Sec. IV s devoted to dscusson and concluson. 2 Nonextensve statstcs 2. Entropy, energy and free energy We consder the canoncal ensemble descrbed by the half-flled, two-ste Hubbard model gven by H = t σ 2 2 (a σa 2σ + a 2σa σ ) + U n n + h (n n ), (4) = = where n σ = a σa σ ( =, 2), a σ denotes the annhlaton operator of an electron wth spn σ, t the hoppng ntegral, U the ntraatomc nteracton and h the appled magnetc feld n an approprate unt. Egen values of the system are gven by ǫ =0, h, h, U, U +, U for = 6, respectvely, where = U 2 /4 + 4t 2 [7][8]. The partton functon n BGS s gven by[7][8] Z BG = + 2cosh(2βh) + e βu + 2e βu 2 cosh(β ). (5)
4 By usng the standard method n the BGS, we can obtan varous thermodynamcal uanttes of the system [7][8]. The entropy S of uantum system n the Tsalls NES s defned by [][2] ( ) Tr (ρ ) S =. (6) Here Tr stands for trace and ρ the generalzed canoncal densty matrx, whose explct form wll be determned shortly [E. (9)]. We wll mpose the two constrants gven by [2] and Tr (ρ H) Tr (ρ ) Tr (ρ ) =, (7) < H > = E, (8) The varatonal condton for the entropy wth the two constrants gven by Es. (7) and (8) yelds wth ρ = ( ) β exp Y [ (H E )], (9) Y = Tr where exp [x] [ + ( )x] Lagrangan multpler related to the temperature T: The entropy S n E. (6) s expressed by c ( ( ) ) β exp [ (H E )], (0) c c = Tr (ρ ) = Y, () s the generalzed exponental functon and β s a T = β = S E, (2) ( ) Y S = = ln (Y ), (3) where ln [x] (x )/( ) s the generalzed logarthmc functon. The free energy F s gven by where the partton functon Z s defned by F = E T S = β ln (Z ), (4) ln (Z ) = ln (Y ) βe, (5)
5 E = ln (Z ). (6) β In the lmt of =, we get from Es.(3)-(6) the results obtaned n the BGS: ρ BG = e βh /Z BG, E BG = Tr (ρ BG H), Y BG = e βe BG Z BG, Z BG = Tr (e βh ), and S BG = Tr (ρ ln ρ ). It s necessary to pont out that E n E. (8) ncludes Y whch s expressed by E n E. (0). Then E and Y have to be determned self-consstently by Es. (8)-() for a gven temperature T. The calculatons of thermodynamcal uanttes n the NES generally becomes more dffcult than that n BGS. 2.2 Specfc heat Frstly we consder the specfc heat, whch s gven, wthn the BGS, by wth C BG = β 2d2 lnz BG = β 2 (< ǫ 2 dβ 2 > BG < ǫ > 2 BG ), (7) < X > BG = ZBG e βǫ X, (8) Z BG = e βǫ, (9) where ǫ =< H > denotes the egenvalue of the Hamltonan. The specfc heat n the NES s formally gven by C = β 2d2 ln Z dβ 2, (20) whch s smlar to E. (7). It s noted that Z n E. (4) ncludes both Y and E, whch are coupled n Es. (8)-(). Then, t s better to employ an alternatve expresson for the calculaton of the specfc heat n the NES, as gven by C = β 2dE dβ. (2) Because E and Y are determned by Es. (8)-(), we get the smultaneous euatons for de /dβ and dy /dβ, as gven by de dβ dy dβ de = c dβ + c dy 2 dβ + b, (22) = c 2 de dβ + c 22 dy dβ, (23)
6 wth c c 2 c 2 = βy 2 = Y w 2 ǫ, (24) E β( )Y 3 w 2 ǫ (ǫ E ), (25) = βy, (26) c 22 = 0, (27) b = Y 2 w 2 ǫ (ǫ E ), (28) ( ) β w = < exp [ (H E )] >, = [ ( ) The specfc heat s then gven by c ( ) β c C = β 2 ( (ǫ E )]. (29) b c c 2 c 2 ). (30) It s worthwhle to examne the lmt of of Es.(24)-(28), whch reduce to c = βe, (3) c 2 = Y E, (32) c 2 = βy, (33) b = < ǫ 2 > + < ǫ > 2. (34) whch yeld C = β 2 (< ǫ 2 > < ǫ > 2 ). (35) wth < X > = (c Y ) e β(ǫ E) X = Z BG e βǫ X, (36) E = Y e β(ǫ E ) ǫ, (37) Y = e β(ǫ E ) = e βe Z BG, (38) Z BG = e βǫ. (39) The expresson for C agrees wth C BG obtaned n the BGS gven by E. (7).
7 2.3 Magnetzaton We dscuss the feld-dependent magnetzaton, whch s gven n the BGS, by m BG = β lnz BG ǫ =, (40) = 4snh(2βh) Z BG (h) where Z BG and < > BG are gven by Es. (5) and (8), respectvely. In the NES, the magnetzaton m s smlarly gven by m BG (4) = β ln Z, (42) For an actual calculaton, however, we should employ an alternatve expresson gven by m = E + β S, (43) = E + β Y Y (44) By usng Es. (8)-(), we get the smultaneous euatons for E / and Y / gven by wth d d 2 E Y = Y = βy w E = c + c Y 2 = c 2 E + c 22 ( ) ǫ w ( ǫ βy 2 ) + d, (45) Y + d 2, (46) w 2 ǫ ( ) ǫ, (47). (48) where c j (, j =, 2) are gven by Es.(24)-(27). We obtan m gven by ( [ ( c22 ) + β Y c 2 ]d + [ c 2 + β Y ) ( c )]d 2 m =. (49) c c 2 c 2 In the lmt of, Es.(24)-(27) reduce to ǫ d = β d 2 = βy ǫ ǫ ( ǫ ), (50). (5) where < > s gven by E. (36). By usng Es.()-(), we get m = m BG, whch s gven by E. (40).
8 2.4 Susceptblty Next we dscuss the susceptblty, whch s gven n the BGS, by χ BG = β 2 lnz BG 2 h=0 = β < where < > BG s defned by E. (8). In the NES, the susceptblty may be calculated by ( ) 2 ǫ h=0> BG, (52) χ = β 2 ln Z 2 h=0, (53) = E (2) + β Y Y (2), (54) where X (2) = 2 X/ 2 h=0 and X = E and Y. Wth calculatons usng Es. (8)-(), we get the smultaneous euatons for E (2) Y (2), gven by and E (2) = c E (2) + c 2 Y (2) + f, (55) Y (2) = c 2 E (2) + c 22 Y (2) + f 2, (56) wth f f 2 = 2βY 2 = β 2 Y 2( ) w 2 w 2 ( ) 2 ǫ, (57) ( ) 2 ǫ, (58) wher c j (, j =, 2) are gven by Es. (24)-(27). The susceptblty χ s gven by χ = ( [ ( c22 ) + β Y c 2 ]f + [ c 2 + β Y ) ( c )]f 2. (59) c c 2 c 2 Note that coeffcents c j n Es. (55) and (56) are evaluated for vanshng h whereas those n Es. (45) and (46) are gven for fnte h. In the lmt of =, Es. (57)- and (58) reduce to f f 2 = 2βY = β 2 Y ( ǫ ( ) 2 ǫ ) 2, (60), (6) where the bracke < > s gven by E. (36). By usng Es.(59)-(6), we get the susceptblty: χ = χ BG gven by E. (52).
9 3 Calculated results We show some numercal calculatons by changng the ndex n the NES. Smultaneous euatons for E and Y gven by Es. (8)-() are solved by usng the Newton-Raphson method. The teraton have started wth ntal values of E and Y obtaned from BGS ( = ). The temperature dependence of the energy E wth U/t = 0, and 0 are plotted n Fgs. (a), (b) and (c), respectvely, wth varous values, bold sold curves denotng results of BGS. The ground-state energy E/t s gven by -2.0, and for U/t = 0, and 0, respectvely. For U/t = 0 n Fg. (a), we note that as decreasng below unty, the energy s more rapdly ncreased above T/t > 0.6. Ths behavor s realzed also for U/t = and 0, as shown n Fgs. (b) and (c). Fgure (d), (e) and (f) show the temperature dependence of the entropy S calculated for U/t = 0, and 0, respectvely, wth varous values. Bold sold curves express results of the BGS ( = ), for whch the entropy s uckly ncreased at lower temperature when the nteracton s more ncreased. When s decreased below unty, the entropy s decreased at low temperatures whle t s ncreased at hgher temperatures. On the contrary, when s ncreased above unty, the reversed trend s realzed. The calculated entropy satsfes the thrd-th thermodynamcal prncple of the vanshng entropy at vanshng T. Fgures 2(a), 2(b) and 2(c) show the temperature dependence of the specfc heat C for U/t = 0, and 0, respectvely. The specfc heat n BGS shown by bold sold curves n Fgs. 2(a)-2(c) have peaks at lower temperatures for the larger nteracton, as prevous calculatons showed [8]. Note that the horzontal scales of Fg. 2(c) are enlarged compared to those of Fgs. 2(a) and 2(b). When the value s smaller than unty, the specfc heat has a sharper peak. On the contrary, when s larger than unty, the peak become broader. Ths behabor of the specfc heat aganst a change n the ndex s consstent wth the result for the two-level system [2]. The specfc heats shown n Fgs. 2(a)-2(c) whch have been calculated by the method dscussed n Sec. IIB, are n good agreement wth those obtaned by numercal dervatves of de /dt usng E shown n Fgs. (a)-(c). The temperature dependence of the susceptblty χ for U/t = 0, and 0 are plotted n Fgs. 2(d), 2(e) and 2(f), respectvely. The susceptblty n BGS shown by the bold sold curve has a larger peak at lower temperature for larger U. Ths result s consstent
0 wth the temperature dependence of the energy shown n Fg. 2(d)-2(f): note that the horzontal and vertcal scales of Fg. 2(f) s dfferent from those of Fgs. 2(d) and 2(e). We note that as decreasng from unty, the peak n χ becomes sharper, whch s smlar to the behavor of the specfc heat shown n Fg. 2(a)-2(c). Fgure 3(a), 3(b) and 3(c) show the magnetzaton m as a functon of the magnetc feld h for U/t = 0, and 0, respectvely, at T/t = when the value s changed from 0.8 to.5: the result for = s shown by bold sold curves. When s ncreased above unty, the magnetzaton at lower felds (h/t < ) s decreased whereas at hgher felds (h/t > ) t s much ncreased. Ths s consstent wth the calculaton of the susceptblty shown n Fg. 3(a)-3(c), where χ at T/t = s smaller for larger : the susceptblty stands for the ntal gradent of m at h = 0. 4 Dscussons and Conclusons Thermodynamcal and magnetc propertes have been dscussed wth the use of the NES. We may calculate many other uanttes of our model. For example, the correlaton functon between electrons wth dfferent spns s gven by L =< n n > = E U. (62) By usng Es. (8)-(), we get the smultaneous euatons for E / U and Y / U gven by wth g g 2 = Y = βy E U = c E U + c Y 2 U + g, (63) Y U = c E 2 U + c Y 22 U + g 2, (64) w ( ) ǫ U w ( ǫ U βy 2 ) w 2 ǫ ( ) ǫ, (65) U. (66) wher c j are gven by Es. (24)-(27). We obtan L gven by ( ) ( c22 )g c 2 g 2 L =. (67) c c 2 c 2 In the lmt of =, Es. (65)-(67) lead to ǫ ǫ ǫ L = + β ǫ U β ǫ, (68) U U
whch agrees wth the BGS result obtaned from Z BG. Fgures 4(a)-4(c) show the correlaton functon L calculated as a functon of the temperature. In the case of U = 0, we get L = 0.5 at T = 0 for all values [Fg. 4(a)]. We note that L for = has a peak at T/t For <, ths peak s sharper, whle for > t becomes broader. When the nteracton s ncreased to U/t =, the correlaton functon at T/t = 0 s reduced to [Fg. 4(b)]. Agan a peak n L at low temperatures s enhanced for <. In the case of a larger nteracton of U/t = 0, the correlaton functon of L = at T/t = 0 s gradually decreased and becomes negatve at T/t > 2 [Fg. 4(c)]. In Sec. III, we have presented numercal calculatons by varyng the ndex coverng unty correspondng to the BGS. The problem s what value s approprate for the adopted two-ste Hubbard model. In the current NES, a full and general understandng of the relaton between the entropc ndex and the underlyng mcroscopc dynamcs s lackng. From an analyss for nanometrc systems consstng of N nonnteractng partcles, the generalzed exponental functon s shown to be expressed by [0]. wth exp [ β o u] [ + ( )β o u] = 0 dβ e βu f(β), (69) [ ] [ ] f(β) = Γ ( ) β β exp, (70) ( )β o ( )β o β o = dβ βf(β), (7) 0 = βo 2 dβ (β β o ) 2 f(β). (72) 0 Here f(β) stands for the ch-suared dstrbuton wth N = 2/( ), β o the average of the fluctuatng β and (= 2/N) ts dsperson, from whch we get = + 2/N > for nonnteractng nanosystems. Euatons (69) and (70), however, do not account for the c factor n E. (9). Expressons smlar to E. (69) have been proposed n Refs. [][2]. Recently the ndex n one-dmensonal dsspatve map has been determned a pror to be = [3] from ts scalng property of dynamc attractors. Rather the ndex s usually obtaned n a phenomenologcal way by a fttng of expermental or computatonal avalable data. The observed velocty dstrbuton of galaxy clusters has been reported to sgnfcantly devate from BGS dstrbuton and t may be ftted well by the NES dstrbuton wth 0.23 [4]. It has been shown that n gravtatng systems, we get = for n = 3 20 by usng the relaton: n = /( ) + /2 for
2 the entropc ndex and the polytrope ndex n gven by P(r) ρ(r) +/n, where P(r) s pressure and ρ(r) mass densty [5]. In summary, we have dscussed the specfc heat and susceptblty of the two-ste Hubbard model wthn the frame work of the NES. Ths s the frst applcaton of NES to thermodynamcal and magnetc propertes of the Hubbard model, as far as the author s aware of. Our calculatons for the model wthn the NES have shown that thermodynamcal and magnetc propertes change sgnfcantly even for a small devaton of the ndex from unty. Unfortunately we have no deas of the value approprate for the two-ste Hubbard model at the moment. It s necessary to make a comparson between theoretcal predctons and expermental data of nanometrc systems, whch reures a calculaton of the Hubbard model wth a realstc sze by extendng the method havng been dscussed wthn the BGS. Acknowledgements Ths work s partly supported by a Grant-n-Ad for Scentfc Research from the Japanese Mnstry of Educaton, Culture, Sports, Scence and Technology.
