Notes on Multple Hgher Category Theory Camell Kachour February 20, 2017 arxv: v1 [math.ct] 17 Feb 2017 Abstract These notes follows the artcles [4, 5, 8] whch show how powerful can be the method of Stretchngs ntated wth the Globular Geometry by Jacques Penon n [10], to weakened strct hgher structures. Here we adapt ths method to weakened strct multple -categores, strct multple (, m)-categores, and n partcular we obtan algebrac models of weak multple -groupods. Keywords. weak multple(, n)-categores, weak multple -groupods, computer scences. Mathematcs Subject Classfcaton (2010). 18B40,18C15, 18C20, 18G55, 20L99, 55U35, 55P15. Contents 1 Multple Sets Multple Sets Reflexve Multple Sets Strct multple -categores 4 3 Weak multple -categores Multple categorcal stretchngs Multple (, m)-sets 6 5 Weak multple (, m)-categores Strct multple (,m)-categores Multple (,m)-categorcal stretchngs Introducton Strct multple categores had been ntroduced by Charles Ehresman n [1] n order to produce hgher generalzaton of categores. Surprsngly the multple geometry used n t to produce a theory of hgher category has 1
not been studed as much as t deserve. In these notes we hope fllng ths gap where n partcular we use the technology of Stretchngs to produce algebrac models of multple hgher category theory. More specfcally we shall ntroduce : Algebrac models of weak multple -categores n 3 Algebrac models of weak multple (, m)-categores n 5 In partcular we propose algebrac models of weak multple -groupods whch are our models of weak multple (, 0)-categores. 1 Multple Sets 1.1 Multple Sets Fx an nteger n 1, each fnte sequence = ( 1, 2,..., n ) N n such that 1 1 < 2 <... < n s called an n- color, and all n-colorsformaset denoted I n. Alsofor afx n-color I n, S 1 = { 1,..., n }denotes ts underlyng set of 1-colors j. If 1 k n, the set S k of k-colors of s well understood, t has C n k = n! k!(n k)! k-colors : S k = { k 1,k 2,...,k C n k },.e each k j s a subsequence ( j 1, j1,..., jk ) N k of such that 1 j1 < j2 <... < jk. The set S n 1 we use the notaton n 1 of (n 1)-colors of has a partcular mportance : for S n 1 = k whch means that the (n 1)-color n 1 k k = {1 n 1,2 n 1,...,n n 1 } and 1 k n s ( 1, 2,...,î k,..., n ) N n 1.e we delete the 1-color k from = ( 1, 2,..., n ) N n. In fact f = ( 1, 2,..., n ) N n s an n-color and f l s an nteger such that the (n+1)-sequence ( 1, 2,...,l,..., n ) s an (n+1)-color, then we wrte ths last (n+1)-color by +l. Thus f = ( 1, 2,..., n ) N n s an n-color then the notaton mnus k means the (n 1)-color ( 1, 2,...,î k,..., n ) N n 1 and the notaton add +l means that l doesn t belongs to S 1 and that +l must be seen as ts correspondng (n+1)-color, and possbly t can be rendexed f necessary. An n-colored set means a set colored by an n-color lke just above. An n-multple data C n means a countable set C n of n-colored sets C n = ( ) In, and a multple data C means a countable set C = (C n ) n N of n-multple datas C n f n 1 and a set of objects C 0. A multple set s gven by a multple data C = (C n ) n N such that for all n 1, and all n-colored set n t, ths n-colored set s equpped for all j S 1 wth sources and targets : s t j j j, C j such that for any n-color wth n 2 the followng dagrams commute : s j s k t j t k s j t k j k j k j k s j k s k j t j k t k j t j k s k j j k j k j k We shall often use the short notaton (C,s,t) to denote a multple set C wth sources s and targets t, and no confuson should appear wth the langage of colors. If (C,s,t ) s another multple set, a morphsm of multple sets : s gven for all n-color by a map f of Sets f (C,s,t) (C,s,t ) f C whch s compatble wth all sources and all targets : 2
f C f C s j s j t j t j j f j C j j f j C j The category of multple sets s denoted MSets 1.2 Reflexve Multple Sets A reflexve multple set (C,s,t,1) s gven by a multple set (C,s,t) such that for all n-color = ( 1,..., n ) I n (n 1) and all 1-color j S 1 the n-colored set s equpped wth reflexons 1 j j 1 j For n 2 consder an n-color = ( 1,..., n ) and j,k 1,...,n such that j k, then we requre the followng commutatve dagrams : s j k j 1 j t j k j 1 j 1 j 1 k j k j k j k 1 j k k k s k 1 j k k k t k 1 j k 1 j k k j j k If (C,s,t,1 ) s another reflexve multple set, then a morphsm of reflexve multple sets : f (C,s,t;1) (C,s,t ;1 ) s gven by a morphsm f n MSets whch s compatble the reflexvty s structures, that s for all n-color and all 1-color j S 1, the followng dagram commutes : f C 1 j 1 j j f j C j The category of reflexve multple sets s denoted M r Sets The frst mportant monad of ths artcle s the monad of reflexve multple sets gven by the forgetful functor M r Sets U MSets and whch s n fact monadc. The proof that U s rght adjont and monadc come from the underlyng projectve sketches of M r Sets and MSets, and by the evdent applcatons of the theorem of Foltz n [2] and Lar n [9]. 3
2 Strct multple -categores A multple -magma (M,s,t,( j ) n 1, In) s gven by a multple set (M,s,t) such that for all n 1 and all I n ts underlyng n-colored sets M are equpped wth operatons M M j M where M M j M are gven by the followng pullbacks j π 1 j M π 0 t j s j j and such that these operatons j follow the followng postonal axoms s j (a j b) = s j (b) and t j (a j b) = t j (a) s k (a j b) = s k (a) j s k (b) and t k (a j b) = t k (a) j t k (b) f j k A multple -magma shall be denoted wth the shorter notaton (M,s,t; ) when no confuson appears. If (M,s,t ; ) s another multple -magma, a morphsm of multple -magmas f (M,s,t; ) (M,s,t ; ) s gven by a morphsm f MSets such whch respects the operatons, that s for all n-color and all 1-color j S 1 we have f (a j b) = f (a) j f (b). The category of multple -magmas s denoted -MMag. A reflexve multple -magma (M,s,t,1,( j ) n 1, In) s gven by a reflexve multple set (M,s,t,1) and a multple -magma (M,s,t,( j ) n 1, In) such that 1 + k (a j b) = 1 + k (a) + k j 1 + k (b) Morphsms of reflexve multple -magmas are those of -MMag whch are also morphsms of M r Sets. The category of reflexve multple -magmas s denoted -M r Mag. A strct multple -categores s gven by a reflexve multple -magma (C,s,t;( j ) n 1, In) such that operatons j are assocatve, are untal.e f for all a we have a j 1 j (t j (a)) = 1 j (s j (a)) j = a and follow the mddle-four nterchange axom (a j b) k (c j d) = (a k c) j (b k d) when compostons n both sde are well defned. Morphsms of strct multple -categores are those of -M r Mag. The category of strct multple - categores s denoted -MCat. The second mportant monad of ths artcle s the monad S = (S,λ,ν) of strct multple -categores gven by the forgetful functor -MCat U MSets and whch s n fact monadc. The proof that U s rght adjont and monadc come from the underlyng projectve sketches of -MCat and MSets whch are not dffcult to be descrbed. A smlar sketch s descrbed n [8]. Then these results come from an applcaton of the theorem of Foltz n [2] and Lar n [9]. 4
3 Weak multple -categores 3.1 Multple categorcal stretchngs A multple categorcal stretchng E = (M,C,(π ) n 1, In,([, ] + r ) n 1, In ) s gven by the followng datas : A reflexve multple -magma (M,s,t,1,( j ) n 1, In) A strct multple -category (C,s,t,1,( j ) n 1, In) A morphsm of reflexve multple -magmas M Operatons [, ] + r : π C M [ ; ] +r M +r where M = {(α,β) M M : π (α) = π (β)} and such that : s +r s [α;β] + r = [s s (α),s s (β)] s s +j j s+ r and t +r ([α;β] + j ) = α and t +j j ([α;β] + j ) = β π +r ([α;β] + r ) = 1 + r (π (α)) = 1 + r (π (β)) A morphsm of multple categorcal stretchngs s (m,c) E E s gven by the followng commutatve square n -M r Mag, m M M [α;β] + r = [t s (α),t s (β)] s s+ r π π C C thus we also have the followng square n Sets for all n-color I n (n 1) c M m M π π c C and we requre for all (α,β) M the followng equalty m +r ([α,β] + r ) = [m (α),m (β)] + r The category of multple categorcal stretchngs s denoted -MEtC. Now consder the forgetful functor : gven by : -MEtC U MSets (M,C,(π ) n 1, In,([, ] + r ) n 1, In ) M 5
Proposton 1 The functor U just above has a left adjont whch produces a monad M = (M,η,ν) on the category of multple sets. The proof that U s rght adjont comes from the underlyng projectve sketches of -MEtC and MSets whch arenot dffcult to be descrbed. Asmlarsketchs descrbed n [8]. Then these resultscome froman applcaton of the theorem of Foltz n [2]. Defnton 1 A weak multple -category s a M-algebra 4 Multple (, m)-sets Consder a multple set (C,s,t), and an n-color and a 1-color j S 1. A (, j)-reversor on t s gven by a map such that the followng two dagrams commute : j j j j j j s j t j t j s j j j If for all k > m, and all k-color, and each j S 1 they are such (, j)-reversor j j on (C,s,t) then we say that t s a multple (,m)-set. The famly of maps (j j ) k>m, Ik, j S 1 s called a multple (,m)-structure and n that case we shall say that (C,s,t) s equpped wth the multple (,m)-structure j = (j j ) k>m, Ik, j S 1. Seen as multple (,m)-set we denote t by (C,s,t;(j j ) k>m, Ik, j S 1 ), or just (C,s,t;j) for a shorter notaton, where j desgn ts underlyng multple (, m)-structure. If (C,s,t ;(j j ) k>m, Ik, j S 1 ) s another multple (,m)-set, then a morphsm of multple (,m)-sets (C,s,t;(j j ) k>m, Ik, j S 1) f (C,s,t ;(j j ) k>m, Ik, j S 1) s gven by a morphsm of multple sets such that for each k > m, each k-color and each j S 1 we have the followng commutatve dagrams j j f f C j j C The category of multple (, m)-sets s denoted (, m)-msets Remark 1 The (, m)-structures that we used to defne multple (, m)-sets have globular and cubcal analogues (see [5, 8]) that we called the mnmal (, m)-structures. The multple analogue of the globular maxmal (,m)-structures as defned n [5] and of cubcal maxmal (,m)-structures as defned n [8] s as follow : for all k > m, for each k-color and for all (k m 1)-color { j1,..., jk m 1 } S k m 1, there exst maps j j j 1 j1 j2, C j1 j1, C j1 C j2 j1 j2 j j 1 j2 j3, j j 1... jk m 2 jk m 1, C j1... jk m 1 j j 1... jk m 1 jk m j1... jk m 2 j1... jk m 2 j1... jk m 1 6
such that we have the followng dagrams n Sets whch commute serally : j j1 s t j1 j1 j1 j1 j j2 t s j1 j1 j1 s j 1 j2 t j 1 j2 j1 j2 j1 j2 j j3 s j t j 1 1 j2 j2 j1 j2 j1... jk m 2 s j 1... jk m 2 jk m 1 j1... jk m 1 t j... 1 jk m 2 jk m 1 t j 1... jk m 1 jk m j1... jk m 2 j jk m 1 j1... jk m 1 j jk m j1... jk m j1... jk m 2 t j 1... jk m 2 jk m 1 s j... 1 jk m 1 jk m j1... jk m 1 s j 1... jk m 2 jk m 1 j j1 s t j1 j1 j1 j1 j j2 t s j1 j1 j1 s j 1 j2 t j 1 j2 j1 j2 j1 j2 j j3 s j t j 1 1 j2 j2 j1 j2 j1... jk m 2 s j 1... jk m 2 jk m 1 j1... jk m 1 t j... 1 jk m 2 jk m 1 s j 1... jk m 1 jk m j1... jk m 2 j jk m 1 j1... jk m 1 j jk m j1... jk m j1... jk m 2 t j 1... jk m 2 jk m 1 t j... 1 jk m 1 jk m j1... jk m 1 s j 1... jk m 2 jk m 1 Also, as n [5, 8] respectvely for the globular geometry or for the cubcal geometry, t s possble to have a general noton of multple (, m)-structure : ths noton gves all possbltes of nverse structure between the mnmal (, m)-structure and the maxmal (, m)-structure. Thus we defne t as follows : a multple set (C,s,t) s equpped wth an (,m)-structure f for all k > m, all k-color, and for all 1-color j1 S 1, there exst an nteger q wth 1 q k m 1, there exst a q-color { j1,..., jq } S q, and there exst maps j j j 1 j1 j2, C j1 j1, C j1 C j2 j1 j2 j j 1 j2 j3, j j 1... jq 1 j j... 1 jq jq+1 jq, C j1... jq j1... jq j1... jq 1 j1... jq 1 such that we have the followng dagrams n Sets whch commute serally : 7
j j1 s t j1 j1 j1 j1 j j2 t s j1 j1 j1 s j 1 j2 t j 1 j2 j1 j2 j1 j2 j j3 s j t j 1 1 j2 j2 j1 j2 j1... jq 1 s j 1... jq 1 jq j1... jq t j 1... jq 1 jq t j 1... jq jq+1 j1... jq 1 j jq j1... jq j jq+1 j1... jq+1 j1... jq 1 t j 1... jq 1 jq s j... 1 jq jq+1 j1... jq s j 1... jq 1 jq j j1 s t j1 j1 j1 j1 j j2 t s j1 j1 j1 s j 1 j2 t j 1 j2 j1 j2 j1 j2 j j3 s j t j 1 1 j2 j2 j1 j2 j1... jq 1 s j 1... jq 1 jq j1... jq t j 1... jq 1 jq s j 1... jq jq+1 j1... jq 1 j jq j1... jq j jq+1 j1... jq+1 j1... jq 1 t j 1... jq 1 jq t j... 1 jq jq+1 j1... jq s j 1... jq 1 jq and that the mnmal (,m)-structures are those wth q = 1, and the maxmal (,m)-structures are those wth q = k m 1 and where we have to consder all q-colors { j1,..., jq } S q. 5 Weak multple (, m)-categores 5.1 Strct multple (, m)-categores A multple (,m)-magma (M,s,t;j) s gven by a multple -magma (M,s,t) equpped wth an (,m)- structure j n the sense of 4, and a morphsm of (,m)-magma s a morphsm of -MMag whch s also a morphsm of (, m)-msets. The category of multple (, m)-magmas s denoted (, m)-mmag. A reflexve multple (,m)-magma (M,s,t;1;j) s gven by a multple -magma (M,s,t) equpped wth reflexvty 1 and equpped wth an (, m)-structure j. A morphsm of reflexve multple (, m)-magmas s a morphsm of -M r Mag whch s also a morphsm of (,m)-msets. The category of reflexve multple (,m)-magmas s denoted (,m)-m r Mag. A strct multple (,m)-category s gven by a strct multple -category (C,s,t,( j ) n 1, In) equpped wth an (,m)-structure. As for the globular geometry or the cubcal geometry (see [5, 8]) t s not dffcult to 8
show that such (, m)-structure s unque under ths strctness. The category (, m)-mcat of strct multple (,m)-categores s the full subcategory of (,m)-m r Mag spanned by the strct multple (,m)-categores. The thrd mportant monad of ths artcle s the monad S m = (S m,λ m,ν m ) of strct multple (,m)- categores gven by the forgetful functor (, m)-mcat U MSets and whch s n fact monadc. The proof that U s rght adjont and monadc come from the underlyng projectve sketches of (,m)-mcat and MSets whch are not dffcult to be descrbed, and t s enough to use the result n 2 the sketch of reversors descrbed n 4, and then these results come from an easy applcaton of the theorem of Foltz n [2] and Lar n [9]. 5.2 Multple (, m)-categorcal stretchngs Amultple(,m)-categorcalstretchng(M,C,(π ) n 1, In,([, ] + r ) n 1, In )sgvenbythefollowngdatas : A reflexve multple (,m)-magma (M,s,t;1;j;( j ) n 1, In) A strct multple (,m) category (C,s,t;1;j;( j ) n 1, In) A morphsm of reflexve multple (, m)-magma M Operatons [, ] + r : π C M [ ; ] +r M +r where M = {(α,β) M M : π (α) = π (β)} such that (see 3.1) : s +r s [α;β] + r = [s s (α),s s (β)] s s +j j s+ r and t +r ([α;β] + j ) = α and t +j j ([α;β] + j ) = β π +r ([α;β] + r ) = 1 + r (π (α)) = 1 + r (π (β)) A morphsm of multple (, m)-categorcal stretchngs s (m,c) E E s gven by the followng commutatve square n (,m)-m r Mag, m M M [α;β] + r = [t s (α),t s (β)] s s+ r π π C C thus we also have the followng square n Sets for all n-color I n (n 1) c M m M π π c C and we requre for all (α,β) M the followng equalty m +r ([α,β] + r ) = [m (α),m (β)] + r 9

The proof that U s rght adjont comes from the underlyng projectve sketches of (, m)-metc and MSets whch are not dffcult to be descrbed (see for example [8]).
