MUTATING BRAUER TREES TAKUMA AIHARA arxv: v3 [math.ra] 7 Jul 2011 Abstract. In ths paper we ntroduce mutaton of Brauer trees. We show that our mutaton of Brauer trees explctly descrbes the tltng mutaton of Brauer tree algebras ntroduced by Okuyama and Rckard. Mutaton plays an mportant role n representaton theory, especally n tltng theory and cluster tltng theory. Cluster tltng theory deals wth the combnatoral structure of 2-Calab-Yau trangulated categores and s appled to categorfcaton of Fomn- Zelevnsky cluster algebras. Ths s closely related wth tltng theory of heredtary algebras, and the class of tltng complexes s one of the most mportant classes from Morta theoretc vewpont [R2]. Now t s an mportant problem to study the combnatoral structure of tltng complexes for fnte dmensonal algebras. In ths paper we consder ths problem for Brauer tree algebras, whch form one of the most basc classes of symmetrc algebras. The man result of ths paper s to descrbe explctly the combnatorcs of tltng mutaton for Brauer tree algebras. Ths s gven by mutaton of Brauer trees, whch s a new operaton ntroduced n ths paper. In Secton 1 we recall a constructon of tltng complexes T of symmetrc algebras A whch we call Okuyama-Rckard complexes. It was ntroduced by Okuyama and Rckard, and has been played an mportant role n the study of Broué s abelan defect group conecture. Snce t s a specal case of tltng mutaton as we ponted out n [AI], we call the endomorphsm algebra End K b (pro-a)(t) tltng mutaton of A. In Secton 2 we ntroduce a combnatoral operaton of Brauer trees whch we call mutaton of Brauer trees. Our man result shows that tltng mutaton of Brauer tree algebras whch we explaned above s compatble wth our mutaton of Brauer trees. A specal case was gven n [KZ] and [Z] (see Remark 2.3). As an applcaton of our man result, we gve brad-type relatons for tltng mutaton of Brauer tree algebras (Theorem 2.5). In Secton 3 we prove our man result. Our proof s very smple and seems to be nterestng by tself. 1. Prelmnary Through ths paper, let A be a fnte dmensonal k-algebra for an algebracally closed feld k and we assume that A s basc and ndecomposable as an A-A-bmodule. Let {e 1,e 2,,e n } be a basc set of orthogonal local dempotents n A and put E = {1,2,,n}. For each E, we set P = e A and S = P /radp. We denote by mod-a the category of fntely generated rght A-modules, by pro-a the full subcategory of mod-a consstng of fntely generated proectve rght A-modules, by 1
2 TAKUMA AIHARA mod-a the stable module category of mod-a and by K b (pro-a) the homotopy category of bounded complexes over pro-a. Let us start wth recallng the complex ntroduced by Okuyama and Rckard [Ok, R], whch s a specal case of sltng mutaton defned n [AI]. Defnton 1.1. Let E 0 be a subset of E and put e = E 0 e. For any E, we defne a complex by (0th) (1st) T = P 0 ( E 0 ) Q π P ( E 0 ) π where Q P s a mnmal proectve presentaton of e A/e AeA. Now we defne T := T(E 0 ) := E T and call t the Okuyama-Rckard complex wth respect to E 0. The followng observaton shows the mportance of Okuyama-Rckard complexes. Proposton 1.2. [Ok, Proposton 1.1] If A s a symmetrc algebra, then any Okuyama- Rckard complex T s tltng. In partcular End K b (pro-a)(t) s derved equvalent to A. If we drop the assumpton that A s symmetrc, an Okuyama-Rckard complex s not necessarly a tltng complex but stll a sltng complex. Defnton 1.3. Let B be a fnte dmensonal k-algebra. For any E, we say that B s the tltng mutaton of A wth respect to f B End K b (pro-a)(t(e\{})) and wrte A B or B = µ (A). TheamofthspaperstontroducemutatonofBrauertreesandstudytherelatonshp wth tltng mutaton of Brauer tree algebras. Let us recall the defntons of Brauer trees and Brauer tree algebras Defnton 1.4. [Alp, GR] A Brauer graph G s a fnte connected graph, together wth the followng data: () There exsts a cyclc orderng of the edges adacent to each vertex, usually descrbed by the clockwse orderng gven by a fxed planar representaton of G; () For each vertex v, there exsts a postve nteger m v assgned to v, called the multplcty. We call a vertex v exceptonal f m v > 1. A Brauer tree G s a Brauer graph whch s a tree and havng at most one exceptonal vertex. A Brauer tree algebra A = A G s a basc algebra gven by a Brauer tree G as follows: () There exsts a one-to-one correspondence between smple A-modules S and edges of G; () For any edge of G, the proectve ndecomposable A-module P has soc(p ) P /rad(p ) and rad(p )/soc(p ) s the drect sum of two unseral modules whose composton factors are, for the cyclc orderng (, 1,, a,) of the edges adacent toavertexv,s 1,,S a,s,s 1,,S a (fromthetoptothesocle)wheres appears m v 1 tmes.
MUTATING BRAUER TREES 3 Note that A G s unquely determned by G up to somorphsm. Moreover t s a symmetrc algebra. We say that a Brauer tree G s a star f there exsts a vertex v of G such that all edges of G appear n the cyclc orderng adacent to v. The followng well-known result shows that derved equvalence classes of Brauer tree algebras are determned by certan numercal nvarants. Theorem 1.5. [R, Theorem 4.2] (1) For any Brauer tree algebra A, there exsts a tltng complex P K b (pro-a) such that the endomorphsm algebra End K b (pro-a)(p) of P s a Brauer tree algebra for a star wth exceptonal vertex n the center f t exsts. (2) In partcular, derved equvalence classes of Brauer tree algebras are determned by the number of the edges and the multplctes of the vertces. 2. Mutatng Brauer trees Let us start wth the defnton of mutaton of Brauer trees. Defnton 2.1. Let G be a Brauer tree and be an edge of G. We defne a Brauer tree µ (G) whch s called mutaton of G wth respect to as follows. (1) The edge s an nternal edge: Let (, 1,, a,) and (, 1,, b,) be the cyclc orderngs contanng. Let ( 1,g 1,,g c, 1 ) and ( 1,h 1,,h d, 1 ) be the cyclc orderngs contanng 1 and 1, whch do not contan. G := µ (G) := a g c 1 g 1 1 h 1 h d b a 1 h d g c 1 b g 1 h 1
4 TAKUMA AIHARA The multplctes of vertces do not change. (2) The edge s an external edge: Let (, 1,, b,) be the cyclc orderng contanng. Let ( 1,h 1,,h d, 1 ) be the cyclc orderng contanng 1, whch does not contan. G := 1 h 1 h d µ (G) := b h 1 1 h d The multplctes of vertces do not change. Now we state the man theorem n ths paper. b Theorem 2.2. For any Brauer tree G and any edge of G, we have an somorphsm µ (A G ) A µ (G) of k-algebras, sendng each dempotent e to e. We prove the theorem above n the next secton. Ths can be regarded as an analogue of derved equvalences assocated wth Bernsten-Gelfand-Ponomarev reflecton of quvers [BGP] and Derksen-Weyman-Zelevnsky mutaton of quvers wth potentals [DWZ, BIRS]. Remark 2.3. Note that a specal case of Theorem 2.2 was gven n [KZ] and [Z], where they only consdered the case (2) n Defnton 2.1 such that there are no exceptonal vertces. Example 2.4. We gve graphs of mutaton of Brauer trees. (1) Brauer trees wth 3 edges and wthout exceptonal vertces:

6 TAKUMA AIHARA We gve some applcatons of Theorem 2.2. For edges and n a Brauer tree we say that follows f there exsts a cyclc orderng of the form (,,, ). Theorem 2.5. Let A be a Brauer tree algebra. Then for any edges, of the Brauer tree of A, we have the followng relatons: (1) (µ ) s (A) A for some postve nteger s; (2) µ µ (A) µ µ (A) f does not follow and does not follow ; (3) µ µ µ (A) µ µ (A) f does not follow and follows ; (4) µ µ µ (A) µ µ µ (A) f follows and follows. Proof. Let G be the Brauer tree of A. By Theorem 2.2, we only have to show the correspondng somorphsms of Brauer trees for G. (1) We denote by Br(n,m) the set of labeled Brauer trees whch have n edges and multplcty m of the exceptonal vertex. We can regard mutaton as group acton to Br(n,m). Snce Br(n,m) s a fnte set, the order of mutaton s fnte. (2) Ths asserton can be checked easly. (3) Let follow beng not and 1, 2 follow. We have the followng mutaton: relabel Hence we obtan µ µ µ (G) µ µ (G).
MUTATING BRAUER TREES 7 (4) Let follow beng not and follow beng not. We have the followng mutaton: Hence one gets µ µ µ (G) µ µ µ (G). As another applcaton of Theorem 2.2, we gve a smple proof of the followng stronger statement than Theorem 1.5. Corollary 2.6. Let G be a Brauer tree and l 1. For every vertex v of G there exsts a tltng complex T K b (pro-a G ) of the form ( 0 P 0 P 1 0 ) wth P 0,P 1 pro-a G such that the Brauer tree of End K b (pro-a)(t) s a star wth the vertex v n the center. To prove the corollary above, we need the followng prelmnary results. Lemma 2.7. For any Brauer tree G and any vertex v of G, there exsts a sequence 1,..., l of dstnct edges such that µ l µ 1 (G) s a star wth the vertex v n the center. Proof. Take an edge 1 whch s followed by an edge wth the vertex v: 1 By Theorem 2.2, we see that the Brauer tree µ 1 (G) s of the form whch says that the edge 1 has the vertex v. Contnung the argument, we obtan a star wth the vertex v n the center. Lemma 2.8. Let G be a Brauer tree and l 1. If 1,, l are dstnct edges of G, then there exsts a tltng complex T K b (pro-a G ) of the form ( 0 P 0 P 1 0 ) wth P 0,P 1 pro-a G such that µ l µ 1 (A G ) End K b (pro-a G )(T). v 1 v
8 TAKUMA AIHARA Proof. For any edge of G we have a derved equvalence F : K b (pro-µ (A G )) K b (pro-a G ) gven by the Okuyama-Rckard complex T(E\{}) of A G, Put T l := F 1 F l (µ l µ 1 (A G )), whch s a tltng complex n K b (pro-a G ). We show that T l has a form (0th) (1st) T l = P 0 Q 0 Q 1 (2.8.1) where P = E\{ 1,, l } P and Q 0,Q 1 pro-a G. We use nducton on l 1. If l = 1, then one observes T 1 = T(E\{ 1 }). Ths says that T 1 s of the form (2.8.1). Assume l 2. It follows from the nducton hypothess that P l s a drect summand of T l 1 and the complement T l 1 \P l s of the form R := ( 0 R 0 R 1 0 ). We see that T l s gven by the drect sum of R and a complex P whch admts a trangle P R P l P [1]: see [AI]. Snce P l and R concentrate on degree 0 and (0,1) respectvely, one obtans that P s of the form ( 0 (P ) 0 (P ) 1 0 ). Ths mples that T l s of the form (2.8.1). Now Corollary 2.6 s an mmedate consequence of Lemma 2.7 and Lemma 2.8. The followng result s a drect consequence of Corollary 2.6. Corollary 2.9. Let A be a Brauer tree algebra. Any basc algebra whch s derved equvalent to A s obtaned from A by terated tltng mutaton. More generally, the statement above s shown for representaton-fnte symmetrc algebras n [A]. 3. Proof of man theorem In ths secton we prove the man theorem of ths paper. We defne an (n n)-matrx C A as C A = dm khom A (P,P ) for any, E, called the Cartan matrx of A. Note that f A s a symmetrc algebra, then we have C A = CA for any, E. We have the followng property. Lemma 3.1. Let G be a Brauer tree. Then the Cartan matrx C A G of A G s determned as follows: m v +m u f = and the ends of are u,v; C A G = m v f and, have a common end v; 0 otherwse. Conversely, the Cartan matrx C A of a Brauer tree algebra A andthe data of extensons among smple A-modules determne the Brauer tree of A by the followng:
MUTATING BRAUER TREES 9 Method 3.2. Let A be a Brauer tree algebra. Assume that the Cartan matrx C A of A and dm k Ext 1 A (S,S ) for any, E are gven. We explctly determne the Brauer tree G of A. (1) We gve the cyclc orderng contanng each edge. Fx any E. We defne a subset I of E by I = { E C A 0}. Snce G s a Brauer tree, one has a dsont unon I = {} I 0 I 1 satsfyng C A 0 1 = 0forany 0 I 0 and 1 I 1. Moreover, foranyl {0,1} and any {} I l there exsts unquely {} I l such that Ext 1 A (S,S ) 0. Thus we can take sequences = 0, 1,, a, a+1 = n {} I 0 = 0, 1,, b, b+1 = n {} I 1 such that Ext 1 A (S x,s x+1) 0 for any 0 x a and Ext1 A (S y,s y+1) 0 for any 0 y b. Hence we can explctly determne the cyclc orderng contanng : a 1 1 b (2) We gve the poston of the exceptonal vertex f t exsts. Note that the exceptonal vertex exsts f and only f there s E satsfyng C A > 2. Put E := { E CA > 2} and assume that E s not an empty set. Snce the Brauer tree G has only one exceptonal vertex, we observe that all edges n E have a common vertex v and any edge havng the vertex v belongs to E. Thus the vertex v s exceptonal. We show the followng easy observaton. Proposton 3.3. Let A and B be derved equvalent symmetrc k-algebras. If A s a Brauer tree algebra, then so s B. Proof. By Theorem 1.5, A s derved equvalent to a Brauer tree algebra C for a star wth the exceptonal vertex n the center f t exsts. Snce A and B are derved equvalent, t follows that B and C are also derved equvalent. Ths mples that B s stable equvalent to C. Note that C s a symmetrc Nakayama algebra. Hence the asserton follows from [ARS, X, Theorem 3.14]. We also need the followng result. Lemma 3.4. [Ok, Lemma 2.1] Let E 0 be a subset of E and put e := E 0 e. Let T := T(E 0 ) be the Okuyama-Rckard complex wth respect to E 0. Assume that A s a symmetrc algebra. Now the endomorphsm algebra B = End K b (pro-a)(t) of T s stable equvalent to A and we denote the stable equvalence by F : mod-a mod-b. Then the followng hold: (1) If E 0, then F(Ω(S )) s a smple B-module; (2) If E 0, then F(Y ) s a smple B-module, where Y s maxmal amongst submodules of P such that any S ( E 0 ) s not a composton factor of Y /S.
10 TAKUMA AIHARA Now we are ready to prove Theorem 2.2. Proof of Theorem 2.2. Let G be the Brauer tree of A and we use the notaton of Defnton 2.1. Snce the Okuyama-Rckard complex T := T(E\{}) s tltng by Proposton 1.2, B := µ (A) s a Brauer tree algebra by Proposton 3.3. Our goal s to show that the Brauer tree of B concdes wth µ (G). To do ths, we only have to calculate the Cartan matrx of B and extensons among smple B-modules. Recall that T s defned as the drect sum of the followng complexes: (0th) (1st) T : P 1 P 1 P T l : P l 0 (l ) (If the edge s external, then replace the above frst complex wth P 1 P or P 1 P.) (1) Let C A,C B be Cartan matrces of A,B. We calculate Clm B. For each l E, we denote by Pl B a proectve ndecomposable B-module correspondng to T l. () We can easly check Clm B = CA lm for any l and m. () We calculate Cl B for l. If l, then we have equaltes C B l = dm k Hom B (P B,P B l ) = dm k Hom K b (pro-a)(t,t l ) = dm k Hom A (P 1,P l )+dm k Hom A (P 1,P l ) dm k Hom A (P,P l ) = C A 1 l +CA 1 l CA l. Therefore one sees the followng: 0 (l { 2,, a } or { 2,, b }); C A 1 l 0 (l {g 1,,g c }); Cl B = C A 1 l 0 (l {h 1,,h d }); m v(l) (l = 1 or 1 ); 0 (otherwse) where v(l) s the vertex of l that does not have. () We show C B = m v( 1 ) +m v(1 ). One sees equaltes C B = dm k Hom B (P B,P B ) = dm k Hom K b (pro-a)(t,t ) = C A +CA 1 1 +C A C A 1 1 2(C A 1 +C A 1 ) = m v(1 ) +m v(1 ). (2) For each l E, we put S B l = P B l /radpb l. We calculate Ext1 B (SB l,sb m ). We denote by F : mod-a mod-b the stable equvalence between A and B gven by T. By Lemma
3.4, one sees that F sends MUTATING BRAUER TREES 11 Ω(S ) (l = ) X l := Y l (l = 1 or 1 ) S l (otherwse) to S B l, where Y l s a unque submodule of P l whose Loewy seres s ( S S l ). (a) We can easly check Ext 1 B(S B l,sb m) Ext 1 A(S l,s m ) for l,m {, 1, 1 } or l = m =. (b) We calculate Ext 1 B (SB l,sb m ) for l {, 1, 1 } and m {, 1, 1 }. One has somorphsms Ext 1 B(S B l,sb m) Ext 1 A(X l,s m ) Hom A (Ω(X l ),S m ) Hom A (Ω(X l ),S m ) { Hom A (Ω 2 (S ),S m ) (l = ) Hom A (Ω(Y l ),S m ) (l = 1 or 1 ) 0 (l = and m {g 1,h 1 }) 0 ((l,m) = ( 1, 2 ) or ( 1, 2 )) = 0 (otherwse). Smlarly, for l {, 1, 1 } and m {, 1, 1 } we obtan somorphsms Ext 1 B(Sl B,SB m) Hom A (S l,ω 1 (X m )) { Hom A (S l,s ) (m = ) Hom A (S l,ω 1 (Y m )) (m = 1 or 1 ) { 0 ((l,m) = ( a, 1 ),(g c, 1 ),( b, 1 ) or (h d, 1 )) = 0 (otherwse). (c) We show Ext 1 B(S B l,sb ) 0 for l { 1, 1 }. One sees somorphsms Ext 1 B (SB l,sb ) Ext1 A (Y l,ω(s )) Hom A (Y l,s ) Hom A (Y l,s ) 0. Smlarly, for l { 1, 1 } we have an somorphsm. Ext 1 B(S B,S B l ) Hom A(S,Ω 2 (Y l )) { = 0 f l s an nternal edge 0 otherwse
12 TAKUMA AIHARA (d) We calculate Ext 1 B (SB l,sb m ) for l,m { 1, 1 }. If l m, t follows from () that C B lm = 0, whch mples Ext 1 B(S B l,sb m) = 0. Let l = m. Snce Hom A (Y l,y l ) Hom A (P,Y l ), we have somorphsms Ext 1 B(S B l,sb l ) Ext1 A(Y l,y l ) Hom A (Ω(Y l ),Y l ) { 0 f Ext 1 A (S l,s ) 0 and m v > 1; = 0 otherwse where v s the common vertex of l and. Applyng Method 3.2, we conclude that the Brauer tree of B s gven by µ (G). Acknowledgments.
