Itroductio The Spriger variety S N associated to a ilpotet operator N: C C is the subvariety of Flags(C ) defied as S N = {V Flags(C ) NV i V i 1 for all 1 i } where V deotes a ested sequece 0 = V 0 V 1 V 1 V = C of subspaces of C ad dim C V i = i for all i. Whe N cosists of two Jorda blocks of sizes k ad k with 2k, we deote S N by S ( k,k). The cohomology rig of Spriger variety S N has bee much studied due to its relatio to represetatios of the permutatio group o letters ([5], [6]). I fact, the ordiary cohomology rig H (S N ;Q) is kow to be the quotiet of a polyomial rig by a ideal called Taisaki s ideal ([7]). I this paper we study the equivariat cohomology rig of S ( k,k) with respect to a certai circle actio o S N which we describe below. Recall that the -dimesioal compact torus T cosistig of diagoal uitary matrices of size acts o Flags(C ) i a atural way. A certai circle subgroup S of T leaves S N ivariat (cf. Sectio 2). The rig homomorphism H T (Flags(C );Q) H S (S N;Q) iduced from the iclusios of S N ito Flags(C ) ad S ito T is kow to be surjective (cf. [3]). The mai result of this paper is a explicit presetatio of H S (S ( k,k);q) as a rig usig the epimorphism above (Theorem 3.3). I related Date: February 9, Mathematics Subject Classificatio. 2 2 TATSUYA HORIGUCHI work, Dewitt ad Harada [1] give a module basis of H S (S ( k,k);q) over H (BS;Q) whe k = 2 from the viewpoit of Schubert calculus. Fially, sice the restrictio map H S(S N ;Q) H (S N ;Q) is also kow to be surjective for ay ilpotet operator N, our presetatio of H S (S ( k,k);q) yields a presetatio of H (S ( k,k) ;Q) as a rig (Corollary 3.4). However, the resultig presetatio is slightly differet from the oe give i [7]. This paper is orgaized as follows. We briefly recall the ecessary backgroud i Sectio 2. Our mai theorem, Theorem 3.3, is formulated i Sectio 3 ad proved i Sectio 4. Ackowledgemets. The author thaks Professor Mikiya Masuda for valuable discussios ad useful suggestios, ad thaks Professor Megumi Harada for useful suggestios, ad thaks Yukiko Fukukawa for valuable discussios. 2. Nilpotet Spriger varieties ad S 1 -fixed poits We begi by recallig the defiitio of the ilpotet Spriger varieties i type A. Sice we work exclusively with type A i this paper, we heceforth omit it from our termiology. The flag variety Flags(C ) is the projective variety of ested subspaces i C, i.e. Flags(C ) = {V = (0 = V 0 V 1 V 1 V = C ) dim C V i = i}. Defiitio. Let N: C C be a ilpotet operator. The (ilpotet) Spriger variety S N associated to N is defied as S N = {V Flags(C ) NV i V i 1 for all 1 i }. Sice S gng 1 is homeomorphic (i fact, isomorphic as algebraic varieties) to S N for ay g GL (C), we may assume that N is i Jorda caoical form with Jorda blocks of weakly decreasig sizes. Let λ N deote the partitio of with etries the sizes of the Jorda blocks of N. The -dimesioal torus T cosistig of diagoal uitary matrices of size acts o Flags(C ) i a atural way ad the circle subgroup S of T defied as g g 2 (2.1) S =... g C, g = 1 g leaves S N Flags(C ) ivariat (see [2]). The T-fixed poit set Flags(C ) T of Flags(C ) is give by {( e w(1) e w(1),e w(2) e w(1),e w(2),...,e w() = C ) w S } where e 1,e 2,...,e is the stadard basis of C ad S is the permutatio group o letters {1,2,...,}, so we idetify Flags(C ) T with S as is stadard. Also, sice the S-fixed poit set Flags(C ) S of Flags(C ) agrees with Flags(C ) T, we have S S N = S N Flags(C ) S = S N Flags(C ) T S.
COHOMOLOGY RINGS OF ( k, k) SPRINGER VARIETIES 3 We deote by S ( k,k) the Spriger variety correspodig to the partitio λ N = ( k,k)with2k. WeextdescribetheS-fixedpoitsiS ( k,k). Letw l1,l 2,...,l k be a elemet of S defied by { k+j if i = l j, (2.2) w l1,l 2,...,l k (i) = i j if l j < i < l j+1, where l 0 := 0, l k+1 := +1. Note that w 1 l 1,l 2,...,l k (i) < w 1 l 1,l 2,...,l k (i ) if 1 i < i k or k +1 i < i. Example. Take = 4 ad k = 2. Usig oe-lie otatio, the set of permutatios of the form described i (2.2) are as follows: [3,4,1,2],[3,1,4,2],[3,1,2,4],[1,3,4,2],[1,3,2,4],[1,2,3,4]. Lemma 2.1. The S-fixed poits S S ( k,k) of the Spriger variety S ( k,k) is the set {w l1,l 2,...,l k S 1 l 1 < l 2 < < l k }. Proof. Sice S S ( k,k) Flags(C ) T, ay elemet V of S S ( k,k) is of the form V = ( e w(1) e w(1),e w(2) e w(1),e w(2),...,e w() ) for some w S. Sice N is the ilpotet operator cosistig of two Jorda blocks with weakly decreasig sizes ( k,k), { 0 if i = 1 or k +1, Ne i = e i 1 otherwise. Therefore, if V belogs to S ( k,k), the w(1) = 1 or k +1. If w(1) = 1 the w(2) = 2 or k +1. If w(1) = k +1 the w(2) = 1 or k +2, ad so o. This shows that w = w l1,l 2,...,l k for some 1 l 1 < l 2 < < l k. Coversely, oe ca easily see that w l1,l 2,...,l k S S ( k,k). 3. Mai theorem I this sectio, we formulate our mai theorem which gives a explicit presetatio of the S-equivariat cohomology rig of the ( k,k) Spriger variety. First, we recall a explicit presetatio of the T-equivariat cohomology rig of theflag variety. LetE i bethe subbudleof the trivial vector budleflags(c ) C over Flags(C ) whose fiber at a flag V is just V i. We deote the T-equivariat first Cher class of the lie budle E i /E i 1 by x i H 2 T (Flags(C );Q). The torus T cosistig of diagoal uitary matrices of size has a atural product decompositio T = (S 1 ) where S 1 is the uit circle of C. This decompositio idetifies BT with (BS 1 ) ad iduces a idetificatio H T(pt;Q) = H (BT;Q) = H (BS 1 ;Q) = Q[t 1,...,t ], where t i (1 i ) deotes the elemet correspodig to a fixed geerator t of H 2 (BS 1 ;Q). The H T (Flags(C );Q) is geerated by x 1,..., x,t 1,...,t as a rig. We defie a rig homomorphism π from the polyomial rig Q[x 1,...,x ] to H T (Flags(C );Q) by π(x i ) = x i. It is kow that π is a epimorphism ad Kerπ is geerated as a ideal by e i (x 1,...,x ) e i (t 1,...,t ) for all 1 i, where e i is the ith elemetary symmetric polyomial. Thus, we have a isomorphism: H T(Flags(C );Q) = Q[x 1,...,x,t 1,...,t ]/(e i (x 1,...,x ) e i (t 1,...,t ),1 i ).
4 TATSUYA HORIGUCHI (3.1) We cosider the followig commutative diagram: H T (Flags(C );Q) π 1 H S (S N;Q) ι 1 H T (Flags(C ) T ;Q) = w S Q[t 1,...,t ] ι 2 π 2 H S (S S N ;Q) = w S S N S Q[t] where all the maps are iduced from iclusio maps, ad we have a idetificatio H S (pt;q) = H (BS;Q) = H (BS 1 ;Q) = Q[t] where we idetify S with S 1 through the map diag(g,g 2,...,g ) g. The maps ι 1 ad ι 2 i (3.1) are ijective sice the odd degree cohomology groups of Flags(C ) ad S N vaish. The map π 1 i (3.1) is kow to be surjective (cf. [3]) ad the map π 2 is obviously surjective. Sice π 1 is surjective, we have the followig lemma. Let τ i be the image π 1 ( x i ) of x i for each i. Lemma 3.1. The S-equivariat cohomology rig H S (S N;Q) is geerated by τ 1,...,τ,t as a rig where τ i is the image of x i uder the map π 1 i (3.1). We ext cosider relatios betwee τ 1,...,τ, ad t. We have ι 2 (τ i ) w = w(i)t because ι 1 ( x i ) w = t w(i), ι 1 (t i ) w = t i, ad π 2 (t i ) = it, where f w deotes the w-compoet of f w S Q[t 1,...,t ]. Lemma 3.2. The elemets τ 1,...,τ,t satisfy the followig relatios: (3.2) τ i (+1) t = 0, 2 (3.3) (3.4) where τ 0 = 0. 1 i (τ i +τ i 1 ( k+i)t)(τ i τ i 1 t) = 0 (1 i ), (τ ij (i j j)t)) = 0 (1 i 0 < < i k ) 0 j k Proof. The relatio (3.2) follows from a relatio i HT (Flags(C );Q). I fact, τ i (+1) t = π 1 ((e 1 ( x 1,..., x ) e 1 (t 1,...,t ))) = i I the followig, we deote ι 2 (τ i ) by the same otatio τ i for each i. To prove the relatio (3.3), it is sufficiet to prove either (3.5) (τ i +τ i 1 ( k +i)t) wl1,l 2,...,l k = 0 or (τ i τ i 1 t) wl1,l 2,...,l k = 0 for ay w l1,l 2,...,l k S S ( k,k) sice the restrictio map ι 2 i (3.1) is ijective. We first treat the case i = 1. By the defiitio of w l1,l 2,...,l k i (2.2) the followig holds: { ( k+1)t if l 1 = 1, τ 1 wl1,l 2,...,l k = w l1,l 2,...,l k (1)t = t if l 1 1.
COHOMOLOGY RINGS OF ( k, k) SPRINGER VARIETIES 5 This shows (3.5) for i = 1 because τ 0 = 0. We ow treat the case 1 < i. Note that (3.6) (3.7) (τ i τ i 1 ) wl1,l 2,...,l k = (w l1,l 2,...,l k (i) w l1,l 2,...,l k (i 1))t, (τ i +τ i 1 ) wl1,l 2,...,l k = (w l1,l 2,...,l k (i)+w l1,l 2,...,l k (i 1))t. We take four cases depedig o whether i 1 ad i appear i l 1,...,l k or ot. (i) If l j = i 1 < i = l j+1 for some 1 j k 1, the by (2.2) ad (3.6), (τ i τ i 1 ) wl1,l 2,...,l k = (( k +j +1) ( k +j))t = t. (ii) If l j < i 1 < i < l j+1 for some 0 j k, the by (2.2) ad (3.6), (τ i τ i 1 ) wl1,l 2,...,l k = ((i j) (i j 1))t = t. (iii) If l j = i 1 < i < l j+1 for some 1 j k, the by (2.2) ad (3.7), (τ i +τ i 1 ) wl1,l 2,...,l k = ((i j)+( k +j))t = ( k+i)t. (iv) If l j 1 < i 1 < i = l j for some 1 j k, the by (2.2) ad (3.7), (τ i +τ i 1 ) wl1,l 2,...,l k = (( k +j)+(i j))t = ( k+i)t. Therefore, (3.5) holds i all cases, provig the relatios (3.3). Fially we prove the relatios (3.4). For ay w l1,l 2,...,l k S S ( k,k), there is a positive iteger i j such that l j < i j < l j+1 for some 0 j k. Thus, we have This meas that 0 j k w l1,l 2,...,l k (i j ) = i j j. (τ ij (i j j)t) wl1,l 2,...,l k = 0. Therefore, the relatios (3.4) hold, ad the proof is complete. (3.8) It follows from Lemma 3.2 that we obtai a well-defied rig homomorphism ϕ : Q[x 1,...,x,t]/I H S (S ( k,k);q) where I is the ideal of a polyomial rig Q[x 1,...,x,t] geerated by the followig three types of elemets: (3.9) x i (+1) t, 2 (3.10) (3.11) 1 i (x i +x i 1 ( k +i)t)(x i x i 1 t) (1 i ), (x ij (i j j)t) (1 i 0 < < i k ) 0 j k where x 0 = 0. Moreover, ϕ is surjective by Lemma 3.1. The followig is our mai theorem ad will be proved i the ext sectio. Theorem 3.3. Let S ( k,k) be the ( k,k) Spriger variety with 0 k /2 ad let the circle group S act o S ( k,k) as described i Sectio 2. The the S- equivariat cohomology rig of S ( k,k) is give by H S (S ( k,k);q) = Q[x 1,...,x,t]/I where H S (pt;q) = Q[t] ad I is the ideal of the polyomial rig Q[x 1,...,x,t] geerated by the elemets listed i (3.9), (3.10), ad (3.11).
6 TATSUYA HORIGUCHI Sice the ordiary cohomology rig of S ( k,k) ca be obtaied by takig t = 0 i Theorem 3.3, we obtai the followig corollary. Corollary 3.4. Let S ( k,k) be ( k,k) Spriger variety with 0 k /2. The the ordiary cohomology rig of S ( k,k) is give by H (S ( k,k) ;Q) = Q[x 1,...,x ]/J where J is the ideal of the polyomial rig Q[x 1,...,x ] geerated by the followig three types of elemets: 1 i x 2 i 1 j k+1 x i, x ij (1 i ), (1 i 1 < < i k+1 ). Remark. A rig presetatio of the cohomology rig of the Spriger variety S N is give i [7] for a arbitrary ilpotet operator N. Specifically, it is the quotiet of a polyomial rig by a ideal called Taisaki s ideal. Whe λ N = ( k,k), Taisaki s ideal is geerated by the followig three types of elemets: e 1 (x 1,...,x ), e 2 (x i1,...,x i 1 ) e k+1 (x i1,...,x ik+1 ) (1 i 1 < < i 1 ), (1 i 1 < < i k+1 ), where e i is the ith elemetary symmetric polyomial. Note that the first ad third elemets above are the same as those i Corollary 3.4. I fact, oe ca easily check that Taisaki s ideal above agrees with the ideal J i Corollary 3.4 although the geerators are slightly differet. 4. Proof of the mai theorem This sectio is devoted to the proof of Theorem 3.3. More precisely, we will prove that the epimorphism ϕ i (3.8) is a isomorphism. For this, we firstfidgeerators of Q[x 1,...,x,t]/I as a Q[t]-module. Recall that a fillig of λ by the alphabet {1,...,} is a ijective placig of the itegers {1,...,} ito the boxes of λ. Defiitio. LetλbeaYougdiagram withboxes. A filligofλis apermissible fillig if for every horizotal adjacecy a b we have a < b. Also, a permissible fillig is a stadard tableau if for every vertical adjacecy a we have a < b. b Let T be a permissible fillig of ( l,l) with 0 l k. Let j 1,j 2,...,j l be the umbers i the bottom row of T. We defie x T := x j1 x j2...x jl ad x T0 := 1 where T 0 is the stadard tableau o (). Propositio 4.1. The set {x T T stadard tableau o ( l,l) with 0 l k} geerates Q[x 1,...,x,t]/I as a Q[t]-module. Proof. It is sufficiet to prove that x b1 x b2 x bl (1 b 1 b 2 b l ) ca be writte i Q[x 1,...,x,t]/I as a Q[t]-liear combiatio of the x T where T is a stadard tableau. We prove this by iductio o l. The base case l = 0 is clear.
COHOMOLOGY RINGS OF ( k, k) SPRINGER VARIETIES 7 Now we assume that l 1 ad the claim holds for l 1. The relatios (3.10) imply that (4.1) x 2 i = ( k+i+1)tx i +t x p ( k +p)t 2 (1 i ) 1 p i 1 1 p i by a iductive argumet o i, so we may assume b 1 < b 2 < < b l. To prove the claim for l, we cosider two cases: 1 l k ad l k+1. (Case i). Suppose 1 l k. We write x b1 x b2 x bl = x U where a U = 1... b1... a l a l+1... a l b l is a permissible fillig of ( l,l). Let j be the miimal positive iteger i the set {r a r > b r,1 r l}, i.e., (4.2) (4.3) a i < b i a j > b j. (1 i < j), We cosider the followig equatio which follows from the relatio (3.9): (4.4) ( x a1 x a2 x aj 1 ) j x bj+1 x bl = (x b1 +x b2 + +x bl +x aj +x aj+1 + +x a l (+1) t) j x bj+1 x bl. 2 Claim 1. The left had side i (4.4) is a Q[t]-liear combiatio of the x T where the T are stadard tableaux. Proof. We expad the left had side i (4.4). The ay moomial which appears i the expasio is of the form x α 1 a 1 x α j 1 a j 1 x bj+1 x bl where j 1 i=1 α i = j ad α i 0. Note that α i > 1 for some i sice j 1 i=1 α i = j ad α i 0. Therefore, usig the relatios (4.1), the moomial above turs ito a sum of elemets of the form f(t) x c1 x ch where h < l, 1 c 1 < < c h, ad f(t) Q[t], ad by the iductio assumptio the term above ca be writte as a Q[t]-liear combiatio of the x T where T is a stadard tableau. This proves Claim 1. Claim 2. The right had side i (4.4) ca be writte as a Q[t]-liear combiatio of x U ad moomials x T ad x U where the coefficiet of x U is equal to 1, T is a stadard tableau o shape ( l,l) ad U is a permissible fillig of ( l,l) such that each of the leftmost j colums are strictly icreasig (i.e. a r < b r,1 r j). Proof. We expad the right had side i (4.4). A moomial which appears i this expasio is of the form x β 1 b p1 x βm b pm x α 1 a q1 x α h a qh x bj+1 x bl where m i=1 β i + h i=1 α i j, β i 1, α i 1 ad 1 p 1 < < p m l, j q 1 < < q h l. It is eough to cosider the case m i=1 β i + h i=1 α i = j sice if m i=1 β i + h i=1 α i < j the it follows from the iductio assumptio that the above form ca be writte as a Q[t]-liear combiatio of the x T where T is a stadard tableau. If p m j+1 or some β i or α i is more tha 1, the it follows from
8 TATSUYA HORIGUCHI the relatios (4.1) ad the iductio assumptio that the moomial above ca be writte as a liear combiatio of x T s over Q[t] where T is a stadard tableau. If p m j ad all β i ad α i are equal to 1, the h = j m ad the moomial above is of the form x bp1 x bpm x aq1 x aqj m x bj+1 x bl where 1 p 1 < < p m j q 1 < < q j m l. This moomial is associated to a permissible fillig U give by U c = 1... d1... c l c l+1... c l d l where { b pi if 1 i m, d i = mi{{a q1,,a qj m,b j+1,,b l } {d m+1,...,d i 1 }} if m < i l, ad c i = mi{{a 1,,a l,b 1,,b j } {a q1,,a qj m,b p1,,b pm,c 1,,c i 1 }} for 1 i l. Note that x U = x U if ad oly if m = j, sice m = j d i = b i for 1 i l. We cosider the case m < j. Sice j q 1 ad a j > b j by (4.3), we have c i = mi{{a 1,,a j 1,b 1,,b j } {b p1,,b pm,c 1,,c i 1 }} for 1 i j. If 1 i m, we have c i a i < b i b pi = d i. If m < i j, we have c i max{a j 1,b j } < mi{a j,b j+1 } d i by (4.2), (4.3), ad j q 1. Thus, U is a permissible fillig of ( l,l) such that each of the leftmost j colums are strictly icreasig (i.e. a r < b r,1 r j). This proves Claim 2. Claims 1 ad 2 show that x U ca be writte as a Q[t]-liear combiatio of x U ad x T, where U ad T are as above. Applyig the above discussio for x U i place of x U, we see that x U ca be writte as a Q[t]-liear combiatio of x U ad x T where U is a permissible fillig of ( l,l) such that each of the leftmost j + 1 colums are strictly icreasig (i.e. a r < b r,1 r j + 1) ad T is a stadard tableau. Repeatig this procedure, we ca fially express x U as a Q[t]- liear combiatio of the x T where T is a stadard tableau. (Case ii). If l k + 1, it follows from the relatios (3.11) ad the iductio assumptio that x b1 x b2 x bl ca be expressed as a Q[t]-liear combiatio of the x T where T is a stadard tableau. This completes the iductio step ad proves the propositio. Recall that for a box b i the ith row ad jth colum of a Youg diagram λ, h(i,j) deote the umber of boxes i the hook formed by the boxes below b i the jth colum, the boxes to the right of b i the ith row, ad b itself. Example. For the Youg diagram ad the box i the (2,1) locatio, the hook is ad h(2,1) = 6.
COHOMOLOGY RINGS OF ( k, k) SPRINGER VARIETIES 9 Lemma 4.2. Let λ be a Youg diagram. Let f λ deote the umber of stadard tableaux o λ. The ( ) = f k ( l,l). 0 l k Proof. We prove thelemma by iductio o k. As the case k = 0is clear, we assume that k 1 ad that the lemma holds for k 1. We use the followig hook legth formula: f λ! = Π (i,j) λ h(i,j). Usig the iductio assumptio ad the hook legth formula, we have f ( l,l) = f ( l,l) +f ( k,k) 0 l k 0 l k 1 ( ) = + k 1 ( =. k)!( 2k +1) ( k +1)!k! This completes the iductio step ad proves the lemma. It follows from Propositio 4.1 ad Lemma 4.2 that rak Q[t] Q[x 1,...,x,t]/I f ( l,l) = 0 l k ( k). O the other had, sice the odd degree cohomology groups of S N vaish, we have a isomorphism HS (S N;Q) = Q[t] H (S N ;Q) as Q[t]-modules, ad the cellular decompositio of S N give by Spaltestei [4] (cf. also Hotta-Spriger [3]) implies that ) dimh (S N ;Q) = where λ N = (λ 1,λ 2,...,λ r ). These show ( ) ( := λ N λ 1!λ 2! λ r! rak Q[t] H S (S ( k,k);q) = dim Q H (S ( k,k) ;Q) = ( k). Therefore, we have rak Q[t] Q[x 1,...,x,t]/I rak Q[t] H S (S ( k,k);q). This meas that the epimorphism ϕ i (3.8) is actually a isomorphism, provig Theorem 3.3. Refereces [1] B. Dewitt ad M. Harada, Poset piball, highest forms, ad ( 2, 2) Spriger varieties, Electro. J.
