1 Contribution of Disorder to the all Effet in Sr CuO +δ L. Fruhter,. Raffy, F. Bouquet, and Z.Z. Li Laboratoire de Physique des Solides, C.N.R.S. Université Paris-Sud, 915 Orsay edex, Frane (Dated: Reeived: date / Revised version: date) arxiv:ond-mat/111v3 [ond-mat.supr-on] 1 Feb 7 he in-plane resistivity and all oeffiient have been measured for the single-layer ompound Sr CuO +δ for the whole range of states. he deviation of the all oeffiient, R, from a high-temperature linear behavior and the temperature dependene of the all angle are both only weakly dependent upon, ontrasting with Sr xla xcuo +δ and Sr CaCuO +δ. his is in ontradition with former proposals that the transverse transport detets the formation of inoherent Cooper pairs in the pseudogap state. Conversely, the analysis of the data using a phenomenologial angular dependent sattering rate learly allows to distinguish between underdoped and overdoped states, and we propose that the maximum in R () simply arises due to the ombination of a large -independent sattering rate and an anisotropi temperature dependent one. PACS numbers: h, 7.15.Lh, 73.5.Jt, 7.5.Dw, 7.5.Fy, 7..+k he superonduting single-layer ompound of the based uprate family, Sr CuO +δ (-1), shows remarkable properties. Its maximum superonduting transition temperature, K, is outstandingly low, as ompared to the other single-plane ompounds, l Ba CuO ( = 9 K) and gba CuO ( = 97 K). A strong inommensurate rystallographi modulation 1 was proposed as the origin of this low transition temperature. he normal state of -1 presents ontrasted results as a funtion of. In the underdoped (UD) regime, a large Nernst effet well above was observed, as well as an anomalously small vortex entropy below 3 (this is similar to another single-layer ompound, (La,Sr) CuO ). Reently, superonduting flutuations were shown to be destroyed in Sr CuO +δ for an unexpeted small veloity of the flutuating superfluid. Both these results may be interpreted as evidene for non Gaussian flutuations in a large interval above the transition temperature 5,. owever, it was shown that linear ondutivity flutuations in -1 are onventional and follow the universal behavior for a two-dimensional superondutor, whatever the state. In partiular these flutuations display no signature of the pseudogap phase; neither does non linear flutuation ondutivity 7. In this ontext, disorder, whih leaves the linear flutuation ondutivity unhanged, is an appealing alternative to explain how large inoherent phase flutuations may ontribute to a derease of the superonduting transition temperature well below its mean-field value. o pursue this idea further, it is interesting to systematially investigate the transverse transport properties for -1, the all onstant, for the whole range of. Although the understanding of this quantity is notoriously diffiult, we will show that the all data for -1 differs from those for other -based uprates, revealing in partiular a strong -independent sattering rate that aounts for the maximum in the all oeffiient. One single -1 thin film was studied for various states. It was epitaxially grown on a SriO 3 substrate and haraterized by X-ray diffration, as reported elsewhere 9. First, annealing in pure oxygen flow at Cledtothefirstmaximallyoverdoped(OD)state. Suessive lower states were obtained by annealing under vauum at temperatures ranging from C to C. he sample was mehanially patterned in the standard ontats geometry. he all oeffiient, R = V t/ib, where V is the transverseall voltage,i istheurrentflowingintheallbarandt = 5Åisthe sample thikness, was obtained as a funtion of temperature during a single slow temperature drift (+ 9 C/hr). he magneti field was ontinuously varying in time, following a saw-tooth pattern with a maximum value of.5. he magneti field dependene of V allows to separate the all effet from the longitudinal resistivity ontribution arising from the sample geometry imperfe- ρ ( 1 - Ω m ) 1 1 C ( K ) 1 n σ / σ ( 9 K ) opt ( K ) FIG. 1: Resistivity for different states. he arrow represents inreasing (thik line is for the optimal ). 2 tion (the all signal was typially % of the total signal). Raw results for the longitudinal resistivity and the all oeffiient are shown in figures 1 and. he resistivity urves exhibit an upward urvature for the OD states and beomes linear near optimum and below, as evidened by the power-law fits presented in Fig. 1. As repeatedly observed, the all oeffiient (Fig. ) exhibits a strong temperature dependene, whih is one of the hallmark for the unonventional normal state of the uprates. In agreement with results in Ref. 1, a maximum in R () is found in the range 9 1 K, almost independent from the state, whih is somewhat higher than the 7 K value obtained in Ref. 11 for single rystals and for the slight maximum in Ref. 1. he all oeffiient does not show the ommonly observed upward urvature at high temperature, but a linear temperature dependene whih ould be heked up to K for the most UD state (Fig., inset). It has been proposed that the otangent of the all angle (θ ) may be more signifiant than the all oeffiient. Indeed, within a senario of spin harge separation for a Luttinger liquid, ot(θ ) is related to the magneti sattering time alone, whereas R is related to both the magneti and the onventional longitudinal sattering time 13. his senario aounts for the experimentaly observed 1 linear ot(θ )( ). As may be seen in Fig. 3, ot(θ ) is learly sublinear in. It is atually better desribed as ot(θ ) = A + B p, where p 1. and possibly slightly inreasing with under (Fig. 3, inset). Suh a failure was notied by Ando et al. 15 in the ase of Ladoped single rystals, Sr x La x CuO : the exponent ranges from p = 1.5 for the most UD (i.e. the largest La ontent) to p = 1. for the most OD sample (with p = 1.7 at optimal ). Aording to Ando et al., this suggests, within the spin harge separation senario, that the role of the spin degree of freedom is weakened, whih would also explain the low maximum transition temperature (35 K) as ompared to other single-layer ompounds. his is also in agreement with the results obtained on Sr CaCu O +δ 1. In the present ase, the redution of the exponent is obtained in the whole range of, and it is notieable that this ours for a ompound where the maximum is depressed to a lower value ( 1 K). here have been many other theoretial proposals to aount for the anomalous normal state properties of the uprates (for a review, see Ref. 1). A partiular lass is the Fermi-liquid model one, where an anisotropi sattering, as found in ref. 19, is introdued along the Fermi surfae. he origin of this anisotropy is a muh debated ontroversy; however a simple phenomenologial model an be used to desribe the transport data. We have used the work of Ref. 1, where a phenomenologial desription of the variation in the mean free path along the Fermi surfae was used (using a simple four-fold funtion): parts of the Fermi surfae ( hot spots ) experiene a stronger sattering than the rest of the Fermi surfae ( old spots ). he all oeffiient and all angle an R ( 1-9 m 3 / C ) ( K ) ( K ) FIG. : all oeffiient for states as in Fig. 1. he thik line is for the optimally doped state. It thus allows the determination of the sattering along the hot and old diretions, m hot /τ hot and m old /τ old. As underlined in Ref. 1, the results do not strongly depend on the exat value for R. In our ase, the determination of the latter is ompliated by the linear dependene for R (), with no observable satura-

We used an estimate for R for the most OD state where the temperature dependene of the oeffiient is the weaker and assumed that R is proportional to the maximum in R (). We heked that the results were essentially independent from the hoie of R for the most OD state. We also evaluated R from the hole ontent, as estimated from the superonduting transition temperature and its phenomenologial relation to the arrier onentration,1, whih yielded results similar to the ones obtained from the first method, presentedin Fig.(using R = 71 1 m 3 C 1 for the higher ). he dependene of the hot-spot sattering rates is markedly different for the OD and UD samples. o emphasize this, we normalized the urves by their room temperature value (Fig. ). Doing so, it is apparent that these urves split into two groups: the sattering rate at the hot spots for the OD states merge onto a single urve whih shows no saturation at 3 K, while it is strongly urved and learly shows a saturation for the UD ones. his behavior is qualitatively what is expeted from the nearly-antiferromagneti Fermi-liquid model, where spin flutuations enhane the sattering at the intersetion of the Fermi surfae and the Brillouin zone along k=±(,π). Within this framework, the non saturating behavior and the saturating one for the hot-spots sattering rate orrespond to the mean-field, OD and to the pseudogap, UD regimes respetively. It is however not lear why the sattering rates should all merge onto a single urve in the OD regime: this seems to indiate that, above optimal, the mean-field regime is valid over the entire temperature range, with no rossover to the pseudogap one at low, as would be expeted in the ase of a steep boundary between the metalli phase and the pseudogap one as one rosses optimal 3. Nevertheless, this approah allows to learly distinguish between the UD and OD regimes in the present ase. It is remarkable that this phenomenologial desription is able to aount for a maximum in R (). Suh a behavior orresponds to an offset in the hot and old spots sattering rates that aounts for a finite mean free path in the limit of zero temperature, as is learly seen in Fig.. his allows for a dereasing anisotropy with a finite limit, as. his is the reason why data in Ref. for YBa Cu 3 O., whih show a maximum in R (), also yield a sattering rate with a finite valueinthelimit 1. hismaybeeasilyhekedby adding to the phenomenologial sattering rates in ref.1 a -independent ontribution, and inverting using Eq. 1. he effet of this additional impurity ontribution to the sattering rate was expliitely onsidered in ref. 5. It was shown that a derease of the p value from the intrinsi p = value, as observed here, an be aounted by a derease of the sattering rate anisotropy. In the present ase, the disorder at the origin of the -independent sattering may originate from the strong modulation, or from both in-plane and out-of-plane impurities. here are several other models that aim to aount for the temperature dependene of the all oeffiient. ussey s model aounts for a saturation of the hot spots sattering rate for the OD regime with a lower utoff of the mean path. Another Fermi liquid theory is the one proposed by Bok et al., using hole-like and eletronlike orbits, depending on the arrier energy with respet to the one of a Van ove singularity. his model, as well as the one by Stojkovi et al., have been ritiized in ref. 7. owever, Castro et al. reognize that their sattering times are qualitatively similar to the ones in Ref. 1. Reently also, the marginal Fermi liquid theory was shown to provide transport oeffiients in agreement with experiments [inluding the sub linear ot(θ )( )], when the anisotropi -independent sattering rate is adequately hosen. owever, it is diffiult to understand,
4 within suh a model, how the sattering rate omputed from our data ould be insensitive to the Fermi liquid to the marginal Fermi liquid rossover, when going from the OD regime to the optimally doped one. Besides these approahes, there have been attempts to evaluate the importane of superonduting flutuations either diretly from the temperature dependene of the all oeffiient or from the all ondutivity. Indeed, it is known that superonduting flutuations bring a ontribution to the all ondutivity 9. Rie et al. have analyzed in this way the all ondutivity in YBa Cu 3 O 7 x 3. Further, Matthey et al. suggest that unonventional flutuations may be unovered by the low temperature deviation of R from a 1/ behavior 31 and the rossover to the pseudogap regime was shown to diretly affet the all onstant,3. We have plotted in Fig. 5 the temperature at whih R deviates by a given quantity from a linear high temperature fit obtained in the range 3 K, as well as for La-doped 1 and 1 from earlier results 1,33. Suh a fit does not prelude the possibility that R () may be desribed as by an hyperboli funtion on a larger range of, but this provides a simple way to estimate this deviation and was found equally onvenient in the ase of the other ompounds of the -based family. Clearly, - 1 stands aside from the two other ompounds: while appears to merge with the superonduting transition temperature on the OD side of the phase diagram for both,la-1 and -1, a large temperature interval remains between and for the most OD state in the ase of -1: is only weakly dependent on. his observation strikingly orrelates with the previous one, that the exponent for ot(θ ) is also only weakly dependent on. It ontradits Matthey et al. proposal that the all data for several uprates supports the existene of some intermediate rossover temperature between and the pseudogap temperature 31, where Cooper pairs start to form loally 3,35,3, whih ould be deteted from the maximum in R (), laying in our ase lose to the deviation point at. In the present ase, this would imply that there is a large temperature domain above, only weakly dependent upon the range, where these inoherent Cooper pairs are present. his is problemati if the presene of suh Cooper pairs is only expeted in the pseudogap state, in the UD regime. So, the following general piture may be proposed. Strongly disordered materials, as is the ase here, an display a maximum in R () well above, independently from the state, simply due to a relatively small mean free path in the limit. In this ase, the balane between the anisotropi -dependent sattering mehanism and a -independent impurity one sets the temperature for the maximum. We note that, for weakly disordered materials, superonduting flutuations aount for an inreasing R with temperature, lose to, on an otherwise dereasing funtion of temperature as obtained from anisotropi sattering mehanism as in Ref. 1. When is dereased, the arriers tend to loalize at low, and the deviation of R () from its high temperature behavior provides a temperature that shifts above the superonduting one, with no need of the intervention of additional superonduting flutuations. 1 K.
