1 Joel Greenberg, PhD Contact Information Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Phone: Duke University, Box Durham, NC , USA Education DUKE UNIVERSITY, Durham, NC Fall Spring 2012 PhD in Physics, 2012 Graduate certificate in Photonics, 2011 A.M. in Physics, 2008 (GPA = 3.976/4; 4 = A) Dissertation: Collective light-matter interactions via emergent order in cold atoms Advisor: Professor Daniel Gauthier, Physics/ BME Department PRINCETON UNIVERSITY, Princeton, NJ Sept May 2005 B.S.E. in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Certificate in Engineering Physics Honors: Summa Cum Laude (GPA = 3.75/4; 4 = A) Senior Thesis: Investigation of Uniform Plasma Channel Generation for Short Laser Pulse Amplification Senior Thesis Advisor: Professor Szymon Suckewer, MAE/Applied Physics Department Professional Experience Duke Imaging and Spectroscopy Program, Research Scientist, Duke Univ., NC July 2012 Present My research focuses on combining compressed sensing with X-ray imaging to design next-generation machines for application to industrial and medical radiography and contraband detection. Quantum Electronics Lab, Postdoctoral Scholar, Duke Univ., NC April 2012 July 2012 I studied novel techniques for creating tunable dispersion via Stimulated Brillouin Scattering in a highlynonlinear optical fiber at telecommunication wavelengths. As a result, we demonstrated a system that enables the tunable dispersion of ns pulses that can be up a million times larger than in previously-developed techniques. Quantum Electronics Lab, Graduate RA, Duke Univ., NC July 2005 March 2012 I discovered a new nonlinear optical effect that arises in a cloud of laser-cooled atoms. I studied the phenomena experimentally by building vacuum, optical, and data acquisition systems, and developed a theoretical and numerical model that describes the phenomena. I communicated my results through the publication of peer-reviewed manuscripts and by giving talks at conferences. Physics Instructor, Instructor, Duke University, NC Aug 2009 Dec Co-designed and -taught a graduate course in optics (PHY 265). High Power Laser Lab, Undergrad RA, Princeton University, NJ Aug May 2005 I studied high-power laser amplification by combining an arc discharge with a laser-induced plasma created with an intense, pico-second laser. In this way, I realized the longest, most uniform laser plasma channel. MARS Collaboration, Undergrad. REU RA, TAMU Cyclotron Institute, TX May 2004 July 2004 I was part of a large experimental nuclear physics collaboration involved in studying collision cross sections associated with astrophysical studies. I carried out data analysis for the project using ROOT. Advantek, International, Engineering Consultant LLC, Boothwyn, PA May 2003 Aug I created a 3D wind turbine model package in Pro-Engineer for vendors.
2 Borexino Collaboration, Undergrad RA, Princeton University/IFNF, Italy May 2002 Aug I worked in a clean room environment to build a detector for an ongoing solar neutrino experiment.
