Here Lu = P u is the Stokes operator, ν >, B(u = P 2 i=1 u i xi u; P is the orthogonal projector onto the space of divergence-free vector fields (see Section 1. The non-autonomous equation (1 has been less studied. Let an external force g (x, t g (t in (1 depend on t, t. Assume the function g is translation-compact in L loc 2 (R + ; H L loc 2 (or in L loc 2,w(R + ; H L loc 2,w. This means that the family of translations {g ( + h h } forms a precompact set in L loc 2 (respectively, in L loc 2,w. It is easy to formulate translation-compactness criterions (see Section 1. Consider the family {U g (t, τ g H + (g } of processes corresponding to the family of equations (1 with external forces g H + (g. (In the autonomous case, g (t g, H + (g = {g }, U g (t, τ = S(t τ. It is known that this family has a uniform (with respect to g Σ attractor A Σ in H. More precisely, A Σ is compact in H, it attracts every bounded set B in H uniformly with respect to g Σ: sup dist H (U g (t, τb, A Σ (t τ, g Σ and A Σ is a minimal compact, uniformly attracting set (see [9], [6], and [4] dealing with a more restrictive case. In [6], [4] the structure and properties of the uniform attractor for (1 were also studied. In the present work we introduce and study a trajectory attractor A Σ for equation (1. We point out at once that a trajectory attractor A Σ is a compact set in the corresponding trajectory space of equations (1 that consists of their solutions u g (t, t, considered as functions of t with values in H. In the previous considerations, the attractor A Σ was a compact subset of points in H.

(The case when g is translation-compact in L loc 2,w is studied in Section 1. In Section 2, we construct the trajectory attractor A Σ of the translation semigroup {T (h} acting on K +. Section 1 deals with the trajectory attractor A Σ in the weak topology of Hw r,loc (Q + under the assumption that g is translationcompact in L loc 2,w only. In this case T (hb tends to A Σ in the weak topology of H r (Q t1,t 2 for all [t 1, t 2 ] R +. In Section 3, the structure of the trajectory attractor A Σ is described.

Vishik Trajectory attractors have been constructed for various equations and systems of PDE for which the corresponding Cauchy problem has non-unique solution or for which the uniqueness theorem has not been proved yet (see [7] [1] and [5]. In Section 4 we construct a trajectory attractor for the 3D Navier Stokes system; the structure and some properties of the trajectory attractor are given as well. In particular, the trajectory attractor A Σ is stable with respect to small perturbations of the external force g (x, t; the trajectory attractor A (N Σ of the Faedo Galerkin approximation system of order N tends to A Σ as N in the corresponding topology. Some other unexpected properties are also exhibited. 1. Trajectory attractor for the 2D N S system with translation-compact external force in L loc 2,w We consider the Navier Stokes system in a bounded domain Ω R 2. Excluding the pressure, the system can be written in the form (1.1 t u + νlu + B(u = g(x, t, (, u =, u Ω =, x Ω, t, where x = (x 1, x 2, u = u(x, t = (u 1, u 2, g = g(x, t = (g 1, g 2. L is the Stokes operator: Lu = P u; B(u = B(u, u, B(u, v = P (u, v = P 2 i=1 u i xi v, ν > (see [16], [15], [19], [21]. By H, V, and H 2 we denote respectively the closure in (L 2 (Ω 2, (H 1 (Ω 2, and (H 2 (Ω 2 of the set V = {v v (C (Ω 2, (, v = }. P denotes the orthogonal projector in (L 2 (Ω 2 onto the Hilbert space H. The scalar products in H and in V are (u, v = (u(x, v(x dx Ω and ((u, v = Lu, v = ( u(x, v(x dx and the norms are respectively Ω u = (u, u 1/2 and u = Lu, u 1/2. The norm in H 2 is 2. We shall study the family of equations (1.1 with various external forces g H + (g. Denote by Q t1,t 2 the cylinder Ω [t 1, t 2 ], where [t 1, t 2 ] R +. Let us recall the existence and uniqueness theorem. t 1 Theorem 1.1. Let g L 2 (t 1, t 2 ; H and u V. Then there exists a unique solution u of equation (1.1 belonging to the space H r (Q t1,t 2 such that u(t 1 = u. Moreover, u C([t 1, t 2 ]; V. This theorem is a variant of the classical result (see [14] [16], [19], [2]. The proof uses the Faedo Galerkin approximation method. We shall study equation (1.1 in the semicylinder Q + = Ω R +, where g H + (g. We introduce two different topological spaces Hs r,loc (Q + and Hw r,loc (Q + ( strong and weak. The space Hs r,loc (Q + (resp. Hw r,loc (Q + is H r,loc (Q + with the following convergence topology. In this section we study the trajectory attractor A H+(g of the translation semigroup {T (t} acting on K + = K + H +(g. The set A H +(g attracts every set T (tb as t in the topology of Θ loc + = Hw r,loc (Q +, where B K + and B is bounded in the Banach space F+ a = H r,a (Q +. Definition 1.1. Let Σ be a complete metric space and let Θ be a topological space. Consider a family of sets {K σ σ Σ}, K σ Θ, depending on a parameter σ Σ.
