INTRODUCTION The geomagnetic field B 0 is an important factor affecting the activities of the ionosphere, including its responses to the HF heater in ionospheric heating experiments. The magnitude and direction of the geomagnetic field vary with the location of the heating site. The direction is usually referred by a magnetic dip angle θ d illustrated in Fig. 1, which is defined to be the angle between the horizontal axis and the geomagnetic field that is inclined downward in the northern hemisphere. The plane spanned by the horizontal axis and the geomagnetic field is called meridian plane. The magnitude of the geomagnetic field is usually represented by the electron cyclotron frequency f e = Ω e /2π = (eb 0 /m e c)/2π = 2.8 B 0 MHz, where B 0 is measured in Gauss; e, m e, and c are unit electric charge, electron mass, and speed of light in free space. For instance, the magnetic dip angles and electron cyclotron frequencies at the three heating sites: Arecibo, Tromso, and Gakona, are (50 o, 1.06 MHz), (78 o, 1.35 MHz), and (75.6 o, 1.4 MHz), respectively. In heating experiments, powerful HF heating waves are transmitted upward from the ground to the ionosphere. Modification effects on the bottom-side of the ionosphere are explored. Fig. 1 Meridian plane and magnetic dip angle. Electromagnetic waves interact with charged particles in the ionosphere and only electrons can effectively response to the fast oscillations of HF waves. Neutral particles can also experience the presence of HF waves through elastic and inelastic collisions with charged particles (mainly electrons). In D and E regions, the density of neutral particles is high, which results in higher electron-neutral collision frequency than electronelectron and electron-ion collision frequencies. Therefore, in those regions, neutral particles can share considerable percentage of wave energy with plasma. Neutral particles thermalize the indirectly absorbed wave energy rapidly; but the individual share is small due to high density that limits the 1

2 temperature increase. Consequently, the HF modification in those regions is not expected to be effective. Therefore, in most HF heating experiments the focus is on the F region modification, where the wave energy delivered to the plasma is mainly distributed in electrons and non-thermal processes may prevail because the energy thermalization and temperature equilibrium time are much longer. However, the collision (electron-electron and electron-ion) process will not be effective enough to absorb the electromagnetic (EM) wave energy delivered to the F region of the ionosphere. Preparations of heating waves in experiments are necessary in order to effectively trap the wave energy there and thus to optimize the HF modification effects on the ionosphere. First, the frequency of the heating wave is chosen to be less than the maximum cutoff frequency of the ionosphere to keep the wave energy in the bottom-side region. However, the heating wave may be reflected back to the ground. To avoid this to occur, a fast conversion of the EM heating wave into electrostatic (ES) waves of the plasma is necessary. This is because ES waves are supported by the plasma and only stay in the plasma. Then the question is how to convert an EM wave into ES waves. In general, there are two processes: linear and nonlinear mode conversion processes. Before a discussion on mode conversion, a comment on the wave features is in order. In general, wave is characterized by its frequency and wavelength. In the plasma, wave is also characterized by its polarization, which is referred to the direction of the wave electric field (rather than that of the magnetic field). Using the wave propagation direction as a reference direction, there are three types of waves, in terms of their polarizations, exist in plasma: transverse (EM), longitudinal (ES), and hybrid. Transverse means that the wave electric field is perpendicular (transverse) to the wave propagation direction; hence, transverse wave is an EM wave that also carries magnetic field. Longitudinal means that the wave electric field is parallel to the propagation direction; in essence, it is an ES wave because no magnetic field is induced by the wave electric field. Plasma becomes anisotropic when a dc magnetic field is imposed; the wave electric field may have an angle other than 0 o or 90 0 with respect to the propagation direction (i.e., a combination of EM and ES polarization). In this situation, wave is a hybrid mode type. II. MODE CONVERSION A mode of a system is an oscillation that can self-sustain in the system. For example, apply an impulse to a (lossless) system; oscillations at all frequencies will be excited. However, not all the oscillations can persist in time; in fact, most of the oscillations will be damped away via phase mixing (among themselves or caused by the boundary effects). In the steady state, only a few oscillations may stay, and these lasting oscillations are the modes of the system. In a lossless system, the modes are eigen-modes. In practice, there are always some losses in the system; in this case, modes are also damped in time (but much slower) and are quasi-modes. In the mathematical analysis, modes represent the source-free solutions 2

3 of the system s governing equations. Therefore, (ω k) relations are determined by requiring the solutions of the source-free equations to be nontrivial (i.e., nonzero solutions). These relations are called dispersion relations, which may be plotted on a k ω plane as dispersion curves. Each curve represents a branch of mode and each point on the curve is a mode of the system. Linear mode conversion may occur in the ionosphere because it is inhomogeneous magneto plasma. Magneto plasma supports various branches of plasma modes, which are EM, ES, or hybrid mode type depending on the frequency regime, polarization, and the propagation angle with respective to the geomagnetic field. As explained in the preceding paragraph, a dispersion relation represents a branch of plasma mode and is a functional dependence of the wave frequency ω on the propagation constant k. Since magneto plasma is an anisotropic (uniaxial) medium, ω is, a function of k and k, where the subscripts and stand for components parallel and perpendicular to the magnetic field; thus the dispersion curves (i.e., ω k relations) of magneto plasma should be plotted in three-dimensional spectral space (k, k, ω). However, a three-dimensional diagram is not convenient for explaining the physical phenomena to be discussed later. Therefore, a conventional way is to only plot the dispersion curves for the 0 o and 90 0 propagation cases; in these special cases, ω are functions of k (= k). Thus these curves can be combined together in a single two-dimensional diagram on the k ω plane such as the one exemplified in Fig. 2 (for downward magnetic field and cold plasma). In this figure, only high frequency branches relevant to the following discussion are plotted and the cutoff frequencies ω 1 (for the L and X branches) and ω 2 (for the R branch) and upper hybrid resonance frequency ω u are also expressed. Hence, a branch for an arbitrary propagation angle can be located in the region between a pair of 0 o and 90 o branches. Among the curves in Fig. 2, L and X are a pair to confine the region of the X-mode branch for the propagation angle from 0 o to 90 o. Likewise, R and O pair for the O-mode branch. The polarization of the incident heating wave determines its mode type. Left- hand (LH) circularly polarized wave falls into the X-mode branch, and the O-mode branch starts with incident wave of right-hand (RH) circular polarization. It is noted that Fig. 2 is plotted for uniform plasma, i.e., for constant plasma frequency ω P and electron cyclotron frequency Ω e. However, ionosphere is not uniform; although Ω e may be considered to be a constant at each heating site, ω P increases with the altitude in the bottom-side of the ionosphere. As a HF heater of a fixed frequency ω 0 propagates upward, ω P in Fig. 2 moves upward along the vertical (ω) axis. Consequently, all the dispersion curves will also move upward accordingly. This will be inconvenient in describing wave propagation because Fig. 2 has to be modified constantly. However, there is a way to fix ω P on the vertical axis of Fig. 2; by constantly rescaling the ω axis during the wave propagation. 3

For example, as wave propagates upward, the scale of the ω axis is increased accordingly to keep ω P at the same point on the axis. Consequently, ω 0 of the wave has to move down along the ω axis. In other words, the dispersions curves in Fig. 2 will remain unchanged as the wave propagates upward; but the point on an appropriate dispersion curve to represent the propagating wave mode will move downward along this dispersion curve (which is between a pair of 0 o and 90 o curves). A. Linear Mode Conversion Linear mode conversion may occur at the intersecting point of two branches of modes. As shown in Fig. 2 only the O-mode branch intersects with the branches of plasma modes. Thus the HF heating wave has to be set with RH circular polarization and Fig. 3 will be used in the discussion of linear mode conversion. In the figure, the dispersion relation of the R-mode wave is expressed and k in the plot represents the component, parallel to the geomagnetic field, of the wavevector. Consider a RH circularly polarized wave propagating upward, with an arbitrarily inclined angle θ 0, into the ionosphere as indicated by the arrow in Fig. 3; the vertically upward component of the wavevector, having the initial magnitude k 0 cosθ 0, will decrease continuously as the plasma density increases continuously, where k 0 = ω o /c and ω 0 is the wave frequency. Consequently, the inclined angle of the wave, with respective to the geomagnetic field, also change continuously. When the wave reaches near the O-mode reflection height indicated by the horizontal line ω 4

5 = ω p, the wave will turn toward either 1) the O- curve or 2) the R-curve, depending on the initial inclined angle (related to the injection angle). In either cases, the wave will reach an intersecting point on the ω = ω p line. In the first situation, for example, for a vertically incident wave (θ 0 = 0), the wave propagation direction turns toward perpendicular to the geomagnetic field (with the wavevector k 0). The intersecting point located at (k =0, ω 0 = ω p ) is a cutoff point, where the wave experiences reflection; and in the nearby region the polarization of the wave is drastically different from that of the electron plasma wave (i.e., Langmuir wave), which has a preferred direction parallel to the geomagnetic field. Therefore, the linear mode conversion to directly convert the heating wave to the Langmuir wave will not occur. The second situation that the wave turns to follow the R-curve requires the injection angle of the heating wave very close to the conjugate α of the magnetic dip angle (i.e., the initial wave propagation direction is already nearly parallel to the geomagnetic field). In this case, the wave at the intersecting point (k = k, ω 0 = ω p ) does not experience total reflection. Instead, the wave tends to continuously propagate upward along the geomagnetic field to become a Z-mode in the region above the O-mode reflection height. However, this linear mode conversion can occur effectively if the wave at the intersecting point can satisfy a phase matching condition, which requires θ 0 = θ s, the Spitzs angle to be elaborated with the aid of Fig. 4. Since the ionospheric plasma density is horizontally stratified, the horizontal component (k 0 sinθ s in Fig. 4) of the wave vector is conserved in the propagation. Thus the horizontal component of the wavevector at the intersecting point, k sin α, should equal to k 0 sinθ s. If the wave is converted to a Z-mode, then (k, ω 0 ) have to satisfy the R-wave dispersion relation: 1 - ω 2 p /ω(ω + Ω e ) = (kc/ω) 2, under the condition ω 0 = ω p. Thus the phase matching condition to convert incident wave to a Z-mode is given by k 0 sinθ s = k Fig. 3 Dispersion curves for a RH circularly polarized incident wave. sin α, subject to that (k, ω 0 =ω p ) satisfy the R- wave dispersion relation. Using this condition, we obtain k = k 0 [Ω e /(ω 0 + Ω e )] 1/2, and the Spitze angle is determined to be θ s = sin -1 {[Ω e /(ω 0 + Ω e )] 1/2 sinα} After the reflection of the Z-mode at its reflection height ω pz = [ω 0 (ω 0 + Ω e )] 1/2, this wave propagates downward to the region near the upper 5

6 energetic electron flux in the background plasma is the airglow enhancement. Electrons can collisionally excite atomic oxygen to emit as airglow. The minimum electron energies to cause airglow at 630 nm, nm, and nm are 3.1 ev, 5.4 ev, and 10.7 ev respectively. On the other hand, an electron flux can also resonantly excite electron plasma oscillation (Langmuir wave), under the resonant condition ω/k = v e, where ω, k, and v e are the wave frequency, wavenumber, and electron velocity, and the subscript stands for the component parallel to the geomagnetic field. Since k is governed by the wavenumber k R of the radar signal (i.e., k = 2 k R for backscattering), the resonant electron velocity v e can be determined by the ω of the HFPLs. Therefore, through this linear mode conversion, the heating wave energy will be trapped in the region between ω p = ω pz and ω pu layers. Since the wave electric field has a large component perpendicular to the background magnetic field, lower hybrid waves may be excited through parametric instabilities; lower hybrid waves are effective to accelerate electrons. Energetic electron fluxes manifested by the HFPLs with frequencies larger than ω 0 have been detected in that region in the Tromso heating experiments. Here, how to relate the energetic electron flux to HFPLs is explained. A direct indication of the presence of B. Nonlinear Mode Conversion Another effective way (and probably the most effective way) to convert the HF heating wave to the plasma waves is through parametric instabilities, by which the heater decays into a high frequency electron wave and a low frequency ion wave. Such a decay process involves modemode couplings through the nonlinearity of plasma; hence it is termed nonlinear mode conversion. Because the decay process preferred the decay waves (in particular, the high frequency electron mode) to be plasma modes to minimize the instability threshold condition, the heating wave has to be accessible to the regions, where the high frequency plasma mode frequencies are close to the heating wave frequency. As shown in Fig. 2, the LH circularly polarized wave will be reflected at a height ω px = [ω 0 (ω 0 - Ω e )] 1/2 that is below the 6

7 electron plasma resonance layer ω po = ω 0 as well as the upper hybrid resonance layer ω pu = (ω Ω 2 e ) 1/2. Therefore, in F-region modification experiments, only RH circularly polarized heating waves are used. Heating waves (with the incident angle far away from the Spitze angle and the conjugate α of the magnetic dip angle) then converted to the O-mode in the region near the HF reflection height, where is located above the upper hybrid resonance layer and overlaps with that of the electron plasma resonance layer. Therefore, the heating wave is accessible to the spatial regions, where many parametric coupling conditions can be matched. Moreover, the heating wave electric field is enhanced by a swelling effect near its reflection height. This makes it easy to excite instabilities, which have threshold field requirements, and also works to increase the growth rates of the instabilities. The swelling effect will be described in detail in section IV. It is worth to point out that this effect was particularly important in the early day heating experiments at Arecibo when the available heating power was barely able to excite parametric instabilities. This is because the heating wave electric field E P near the HF reflection height (i.e., instability region) is parallel to the geomagnetic field, which will be the preferred direction to excite parametric instabilities. Although the instabilities may be excited over a angular range around the geomagnetic field, the instability thresholds E th increase as the angles θ (with respect to the geomagnetic field B 0 ) of the wavevectors k of the plasma waves in the parametric coupling increase; this is because the parametric coupling coefficients are, in general, proportional to (k E 0 ) cos θ and the enhanced nonlinear damping introduced by the mode competition, in which faster growing modes (i.e., having smaller θ) tend to suppress the slower growing modes (i.e., having larger θ). However, backscatter radar can only detect up-going and down-going plasma and ion lines. The magnetic dip angle at Arecibo is 50 o, thus the up-going and down-going plasma and ion lines have a propagation angle of 40 o. III. PARAMETRIC INSTABILITIES A parametric amplifier uses three coupled resonant circuits (e.g., LC circuits) to convert frequency from one to another. Shown in Fig. 5 is an example of a general parametric amplifier network. The nonlinear (variac) capacitor C in the circuit provides the coupling (i.e., frequency mixing). The three resonant modes, oscillating at ω 0, ω 1, and ω S, in a parametric amplifier are called source (pump), idler (sideband), and signal (decay mode), where, the frequency matching condition ω 0 = ω 1 + ω S is satisfied. Generalize the basic principle for wave amplification in a circuit to a system; one recognizes that the system has to be able to support at least three branches of oscillations and carries nonlinear properties to provide mechanisms for wave-wave couplings. Plasma can support high frequency EM waves, as well as electrostatic (ES) plasma waves of high and low frequencies as plasma modes that oscillate in plasma as thermal fluctuations in the absence of external sources. In essence, plasma is a nonlinear 7

8 Fig. 5 A general parametric amplifier network. medium. Therefore, parametric coupling among three modes can occur. When a large amplitude high frequency wave E p (ω 0, k p ) (either EM or ES) appears in plasma, this wave can act as a pump wave to excite plasma modes through parametric couplings. For example, this pump wave electric field can drive a nonlinear current in the electron density perturbation n s (ω s, k s ) of a low frequency plasma mode to produce beat waves E 1 (ω 1, k 1 ) and E 1 (ω 1, k 1 ). Since these are propagating waves, their wavevectors, in addition to the frequencies, also have to be matched in the couplings. In other words, both frequency and wavevector matching conditions: ω 0 = ω 1 + ω s * = ω 1 ω s and k p = k 1 + k s = k 1 k s are imposed in parametric couplings in plasmas. The strength of the coupling depends on the involved nonlinearities and the nature of the induced beat wave. The coupling is strong when the beat wave is resonant with plasma (i.e., a plasma mode). Beat waves, in turn, also couple with the pump wave to introduce a low frequency nonlinear force on electrons, which produces plasma density perturbation having the same frequency and wavevector as n s (ω s, k s ). Hence, this coupling produces a feedback to the original density perturbation n s (ω s, k s ). If the feedback is positive and large enough to overcome linear losses of coupled waves, the coupling becomes unstable and coupled waves grow exponentially in the expense of pump wave energy. This is called parametric instability, by which the pump wave E p (ω 0, k p ) decays to two sidebands E 1 (ω 1, k 1 ) and E 1 (ω 1, k 1 ) through a low frequency decay mode n s (ω s, k s ). This instability process involves the nonlinearity of the plasma and thus is a nonlinear instability. The parametric coupling is imposed 8

9 by the frequency and wavevector matching conditions as well as a threshold condition on the pump wave field intensity. This process can be reduced to a three-wave coupling process when the decay mode n s (ω s, k s ) has a finite oscillating frequency. In this situation, two sidebands cannot satisfy the same dispersion relation simultaneously. Thus the frequencyupshifted sideband E 1 (ω 1, k 1 ) is off resonant with plasma and can be neglected in the coupling. The most effective parametric instabilities excited directly by the electromagnetic heating wave are 1) Parametric decay instability (PDI) and 2) Oscillating two-stream instability (OTSI), in both mid-latitude and high-latitude regions. The sideband(s) in mid-latitude region is Langmuir wave. In high-latitude region the sideband(s) can be upper hybrid wave or Langmuir wave, however, the instabilities involving Langmuir wave as a sideband have to compete with those excited in the lower altitudes and having upper hybrid wave as a sideband. Dipole pump, i.e., its wavevector k 0 = 0, can be assumed. This is because these instabilities are excited in the region near the O-mode reflection height and the sideband(s) and decay mode are electrostatic waves, which have much larger wavenumbers. A. Parametric Decay Instability (PDI) This is a three-wave coupling process represented by EM Pump (ω 0, k 0 =0) Langmuir sideband + Ion acoustic wave (ω 1, k 1 ) (ω s *, ks ) where ks = -k 1. B. Oscillating Two Stream Instability (OTSI) This is a four-wave coupling process represented by Langmuir sideband (ω 1, k 1 ) + Purely growing mode (-iγ, k s ) EM Pump (ω 0, 0) Langmuir sideband (ω 1, -k 1 ) where again ks = -k 1. Purely growing mode (iγ, k s ) PDI and OTSI having the upper hybrid wave as a sideband have the similar representations. It is noted that the instability processes usually prefer the excited waves to be plasma modes. The instability threshold can increase considerably if the ω-k relationships of the excited waves are too much off from the dispersion relations of the plasma modes. For example, the threshold of OTSI is higher than that of PDI because purely growing mode is not a plasma mode and the sidebands are also slightly off from the Langmuir mode. How can the frequency and wavevector matching conditions of the two processes be satisfied through the coupled plasma waves is exemplified in Fig. 6, which focuses on the special situation that k 1 (and k S ) is parallel to the geomagnetic field to simplify the plot. In the figure, the dispersion curves of the Langmuir wave (represented by the parabola, which asymptotically approaches to the line labeled by ω = kv te and its mirror image) and ion acoustic wave (represented by the straight line labeled by ω = kc S and its mirror image) are plotted on the ω-k plane, the dipole pump is represented by a point (ω 0, 0) on the vertical axis, and purely growing modes are 9

Thus each wave (or mode) labeled by its frequency and wavenumber (ω, k) can be represented by a position vector of the corresponding point on the plane. In this representation, the frequency and wavenumber matching conditions are combined into a single vector matching condition. Consider PDI matching first. Starting at the point (ω 0, 0) a downward inclined line parallel to the line ω = kc S is drawn to intersect with the parabola. The intersecting point (ω 1, k 1 ) determines the sideband, which is an electron plasma (Langmuir) mode. The difference of the two vectors (ω 0, 0) and (ω 1, k 1 ) determines a position vector (ω S, k S ). Because this difference vector is parallel to the line ω = kc S, this point (ω S, k S ) is on the line ω = kc S. In other words, (ω S, k S ) is an ion acoustic mode. The vector relationships shown in the figure illustrate how to determine plasma modes to meet the frequency and wavenumber matching conditions in the PDI process. Next consider OTSI matching. Because the purely growing mode is on the horizontal axis, two symmetric vector matching relations involving two different sidebands as shown in the figure can be arranged. Thus OTSI is a four wave coupling process. Because the real frequency of the purely growing mode is zero that is less than the ion acoustic mode frequency, the sidebands real frequency also has to be slightly less than the corresponding Langmuir mode frequency. 10

11 Using a different point (ω 0, 0) on the vertical axis to represent the pump wave, a horizontal line passing this point is drawn. Thus the sidebands locate at two mirror image points on this line and slightly outside the parabola. The exact locations of the sidebands require a detail analysis of the coupled mode equations. Because the bottom-side ionosphere has an increasing plasma density profile, the parabola in Fig. 6 can move up and down, with respect to a fix pump wave point (ω 0, 0), to represent different interaction layers. In both processes, the central point (ω p, 0) of the parabola has to be below the point (ω 0, 0). However, the point (ω p, 0) in OTSI is closer to the point (ω 0, 0) than that in PDI. The wavenumbers of the points determined by the vector matching condition vary with ω p. In heating experiments, the wavenumbers of HF enhanced plasma lines and ion lines (HFPLs and HFILs) are fixed by the wavenumber of backscatter radar. Thus the HFPLs and HFILs contributed by PDI and OTSI are originating from narrow regions below the O-mode reflection height. Langmuir waves excited by OTSI and PDI in the region below the HF reflection height can become pump waves to excite new parametric instabilities, which generate frequencydownshifted Langmuir waves to be their sidebands. This is called Langmuir cascade. Continuous cascade of Langmuir waves through new parametric instabilities broadens the downshifted frequency spectrum of Langmuir waves. Similar description is also applicable to the upper hybrid cascade. The permissible number of cascade and the required pump threshold field vary with each cascade process distinct by the low frequency decay mode. In the following, a Langmuir cascade process that involves an ion acoustic wave as the decay mode is discussed. C. Langmuir Cascade This three-wave coupling process is represented by Langmuir Pump (ω 1,k 1 ) Langmuir sideband + Ion acoustic wave (ω 2,k 2 ) (ω s *,ks ) where ks = k 1 k 2 2k 1. We now use Fig. 7 to explain how to determine the plasma modes in the cascade process. Starting at a point (ω 1, k 1 ) on the RHS of the parabola, which represents a Langmuir wave excited by PDI, a downward inclined line parallel to the line ω = kc S is drawn, the same procedure as that used in describing PDI. The intersecting point (ω 2, k 2 ) on the LHS of the parabola determines the sideband. The vector between the two points (ω 1, k 1 ) and (ω 2, k 2 ) can then be mapped on the ω = kc S line to identify the decay mode. The matching conditions are satisfied as indicated by the vector relations shown in the figure. Similar procedure starting at the point (ω 2, k 2 ) can be applied to determine the plasma modes in the subsequent cascade. However, one can easily find that k 3 will be smaller than k 2 (likewise, k 2 < k 1 ). On the other hand, HFPLs have a fixed k value. Therefore, the parabola has to move down slightly in each subsequent cascade to keep the sideband to have a 11

In other words, the cascade lines in the HFPLs contributed by this cascade process are originating from a relatively thick layer. In the frequency spectrum of HFPLs, the first spectral peak having the highest frequency at ω = ω 1 is an OTSI line if ω 1 = ω 0, the heating wave frequency; and it is a PDI line if ω 1 is downshifted from ω 0 by ω = ω 0 ω 1 = ω S0 = 2k R C s, where k R is the wavenumber of the probing backscatter radar signal; the subsequent spectral peaks at ω 2, ω 3, then correspond to the first, second, cascade lines. The cascade lines are recognized by doubling their frequency downshift from the preceding line to 2 ω S0. For example, if a spectrogram of HFPLs contains 7 spectral peaks starting at ω = ω 0, then the first two spectral peaks at ω = ω 0 and ω 0 - ω S0 are called OTSI and PDI line, respectively. The remaining 5 spectral peaks at ω 0 (2n +1)ω S0, n = 1,, 5 are called cascade lines and are attributed to the PDI process. Therefore, the spectral width of HFPLs is about 11 ω S0. D. HFPLs In general, HF heating waves produce an abundance of wave phenomena through parametric instabilities. However, remote sensing by radars cannot explore all of them. For example, backscatter radars cannot detect upper hybrid waves, whose excitation by the HF heating waves in high-latitude region is inferred by the ground measurements on stimulated electromagnetic emissions (SEEs). Radar detection is based on incoherent and coherent scatterings from the target. In probing background plasma, return signals come from incoherent scatterings. On the other hand, plasma waves can scatter radar signal 12

13 coherently with much larger scattering cross sections, which make the return signals to have large signal to noise ratios. However, the coherent scattering has to satisfy the Bragg scattering condition, i.e., the frequencies and wavevectors of the scattered waves (ω B, k B ), plasma waves (ω L, k L ), and incident radar wave (ω R, k R ) are related by the relations ω B = ω R ω L and k B = k R k L. In general, ω R >> ω L, thus k B k R = ω R /c. Therefore, in the backscattering case, k B k R and k L! 2k R. In other words, radar can only effectively detect those Langmuir waves having wavenumbers twice the wavenumber of the probing radar signal and propagating parallel (upgoing) or anti-parallel (down-going) to the pointing direction of radar. These recorded spectral lines are termed HF enhanced plasma lines (HFPLs). The up-going plasma wave scatters the radar signal to produce a frequencydownshifted radar return (ω B, k B ), and the frequency-upshifted radar return (ω B+, k B+ ) is produced by scattering the radar wave over the down-going plasma wave. In general, the spectrogram of HFPLs records the spectrum of the radar return signals at frequencies offset by ω R ω 0. Therefore, the spectral lines of up-going plasma waves will appear in the spectrogram as cascading to the right hand side (positive frequency side) with increasing frequencies. Occasionally, spectral lines appearing in the negative frequency side are also recorded. These lines correspond to up-going frequency up-shifted plasma waves. Their generation mechanisms can be quite different from those of frequency downshifted plasma waves discussed in the preceding paragraphs. On the other hand, the spectral lines of down-going plasma waves will appear in the spectrogram as cascading to the left hand side (negative frequency side) with decreasing frequencies. Again, if there are spectral lines appear in the positive frequency side, these lines correspond to down-going frequency upshifted plasma waves. IV. WAVE PROPAGATION IN A NON- UNIFORM MEDIUM Wave propagation is governed by a wave equation given by d 2 E/dz 2 + k 2 (z) E = 0 (1) In the case of wave propagation from ground upward to the ionosphere, k 2 (z) = [ω ω 2 p (z)]/c 2, where ω 0 is the wave frequency, ω p (z) = [4πn e (z)e 2 /m e ] 1/2 is the electron plasma frequency, and the electron density n e (z) increases with the altitude; geomagnetic field is not included in the formulation to simplify the analysis and presentation. Therefore, k(z) decreases as wave propagates upward. Considering the situation that ω is less than the maximum plasma frequency of the ionosphere (where is called F-peak), thus, wave can reach a layer at z = z 0, where ω p (z 0 ) = ω 0 and k(z 0 ) = 0. This point z 0 is called turning point, where wave reflection occurs. First, when the wave is not near a turning point (i.e., reflection point) z 0, it can be expressed approximately by the WKB solution E = A 0 (k) 1/2 exp[±i z k(z) dz] (2) 13

The wave field function E(z) given by (8) is plotted in Fig. 8. As shown, the wave field amplitude near the turning point (i.e., the reflection height) is enhanced considerably by the cutoff effect. NONLINEAR SCHRODINGER EQUATION FOR LANGMUIR WAVES Plasma waves are governed by a set of fluid equations, which, in essence, are nonlinear and coupled to each other. We will combine these equations into two equations; one describes the Langmuir wave and the other one for the ion wave. These two equations are coupled to each 14

15 other due to the nonlinear nature of plasma. We will introduce some assumptions and make approximations accordingly to combine these two equations into a single one for the Langmuir wave without further complicating the expression of the combined equation. A. The second term on the RHS of (14) depends explicitly on the density perturbation of the ion wave and manifests the coupling between Langmuir waves and ion waves. Therefore, the equation for the ion wave is needed and derived. B. Coupled Nonlinear Equation for the Ion Wave Both electrons and ions can effectively respond to low frequency wave fields. Hence, the formulation of the ion wave equation needs to include both electron and ion fluid equations. Since electrons and ions tend to move together, the formulation can be simplified by introducing the quasi-neutral condition: n si n se = n s. The ion fluid equations are similar to (9) and (10), except that the subscript e is changed to i, and the charge e changed to e. Soliton is the result of the balance between the dispersion effect (represented by the first term on the LHS of (21)) and the nonlinearity (represented by the second term on the LHS of (21)) of the medium. The nonlinearity of the medium focuses the wave to overcome the wave dispersion in the propagation, thus a shapepreserved solitary wave can exist. However, it should be noted that the solitary solution exists only under the condition C = 0, i.e., the initial source wave has to be localized. Otherwise, the solution of the nonlinear Schrodinger equation is a periodic function. In other words, the solution form of the nonlinear Schrodinger equation, either a periodic function or a solitary function, depends on the initial/boundary conditions of the source wave function. In heating experiments, heating wave covers a large cross section area (a few tens of km in diameter). Therefore, it is not likely to excite localized Langmuir waves as the source waves to evolve nonlinearly into Langmuir solitons. In conclusion, the envelope of Langmuir waves is governed by a nonlinear Schrodinger equation, which can have solitary solutions. However, the heating experiments do not provide the necessary 17

18 (localized) condition for the excited Langmuir waves able to evolve into Langmuir solitons. As a concluding remark, plasma can support Langmuir soliton, but Langmuir soliton is not a necessity of the plasma nonlinearity. If the initial and boundary conditions, used in numerical simulations to show the generation of solitons, are not consistent with the physical conditions of experiments, the simulations are nothing but numerical excises and the numerical results have no physical meanings. A LIST OF PHENOMENA OBSERVED IN HF HEATING EXPERIMENTS 1. HFPLs including 1) Frequency down-shifted cascade lines: Showing discrete spectral peaks, which manifest OTSI, PDI, and cascade. 2) Frequency up-shifted lines: Langmuir mode frequency increases with the oblique angle of the propagation; frequency upshifted Langmuir waves with large oblique propagation angles (e.g., 40 o ) can be excited through scattering the HF heater off background lower hybrid waves. 3) Asymmetry between up-going and downgoing HFPLs: The intensities of frequency up-shifted and down-shifted radar returns are not the same when radar is operated at low spatial resolution; usually, the intensity of frequency down-shifted radar returns, corresponding to up-going HFPLs, is more intense. This is because the source region of upgoing HFPLs is thicker than that of down-going HFPLs. 4) Dynamic down-moving of the originating (matching) height of HFPLs: In cw heating experiments and with improved radar spatial resolution, the height of exciting PDI that backscattered radar signal was shown to move downward in time; it was due to anomalous electron heating to move the PDI matching height downward. 2. Plasma Line Overshoot: The intensity of parametrically excited (frequency down-shifted) plasma line varies in time; after reaching a peak, it drops to a much lower steady state level. Lines having large oblique propagation angles are impeded by those with small oblique propagation angles through mode competition (i.e., resonance broadening of collisionless damping). 3. Airglow Enhancement: Electrons can collisionally excite atomic oxygen to emit as airglow. Through heating, superthermal electrons (energy > 3.1 ev) in the tail of the energy distribution can gain significant flux to produce considerable airglow at 630 nm; with further enhanced heating, electron flux with energy > 5.4 ev can also be enhanced to a significant level, which causes airglow at nm. Through second harmonic electron cyclotron resonance interaction, non-thermal energetic electron flux with energy > 10.7 ev can be produced. It generates emission at nm. Thus airglow enhancement is affected by the power, frequency (second harmonic electron cyclotron resonance), and transmitted direction (vertical or toward magnetic zenith) of the HF heater. 18

19 4. Energetic Electron Flux: Energetic electron fluxes in the energy range from 10 to 25 ev have been detected in situ by a probe in rocket as well as on the ground by radar inferred by ultra up-shifted frequency band. 5. Artificial Spread-F: Delayed echoes causing spread of the return trace recorded on the ionogram of ionosonde (HF radar); the HF-induced large-scale field-aligned density irregularities (a few hundreds of meters to kilometers) can cause multiple radar returns at the same radar frequency but at different return times. 6. Wide-band Absorption: Anomalous attenuation of HF radar echoes over a wide-band was observed; it could be attributed to Bragg scattering of HF radar signals by HF-induced field-aligned density irregularities of a few tens of meters; the scattered signals didn t return to radar, which represented a loss in echoes intensities. 7. Short-scale (meters) Density Irregularities for Bragg Scattering: It was demonstrated that short-scale density irregularities could scatter ground transmitted VHF signals back to the ground at a different site, over the horizon distance away from the transmitter site; a possible communications link. 8. Stimulated Electromagnetic Emission (SEE): Emissions with frequency down-shifted spectra have been detected on the ground by HF receivers, mainly at high altitude heating sites. The spectra resembled those of upper hybrid/electron Bernstein waves excited by parametric instabilities. These parametrically excited electrostatic waves, which could not detected by backscatter radar, were converted, via scattering by short-scale density irregularities, into EM emissions to propagate downward to the ground. These emissions were generated through instabilities, thus termed SEEs. SEEs require the presence of short-scale density irregularities, which are sensitive to the heater frequency in reference to the electron cyclotron harmonic resonance frequencies. Therefore, various spectral features of SEEs have been observed by finetuning of the heater frequency around each electron cyclotron harmonic resonance frequency. 9. ELF/VLF Wave Generation: In the polar region, an electrojet current appears frequently in the lower ionosphere (D and E regions). This current is driven by a dc space charge field and can be perturbed through perturbations on the background electric conductivity. An amplitude-modulated powerful HF wave modulated at ELF/VLF frequency can be introduced to heat background plasma. The HF wave modulates the electron temperature, which results to the modulation of the electron conductivity in a similar fashion as the power modulation of the heating wave. Consequently, the electrojet current driven by the background dc fields become oscillating in time to act virtually as an antenna. The ac part of the current becomes the source current of ELF/VLF radiation. Generation of ELF/VLF waves by such modulated electrojet currents has been demonstrated experimentally. ELF/VLF waves are suitable for under-water communications and for exploring the magnetosphere. 19
