(15 marks/markah) [c] A light string ABCDE whose extremity A is fixed, has weights W 1 and W 2 attached to it at B and C as shown in Figure Q1[c]. It passes round a small smooth pulley at D carrying a weight of 500 N at the free end E as shown in the figure. If in the equilibrium position, BC is horizontal, AB and CD make 150 and 120 with BC, respectively, find (i) tensions in the strings, (ii) magnitudes of W 1 and W 2. 4 -4- [c] A 100-kg uniform rectangular plate is supported in the position shown in Figure Q2[c] by hinges A and B and by cable DCE that passes over a frictionless hook at C. Assume that the tension in the cables CD and CE is the same and the hinge at B does not exert any axial thrust. By taking that no moment reactions at the hinges, determine (i) the tension in the cable, (ii) the reactions at A and B. Knowing that car A has a constant acceleration of 0.5 m/s 2 and that B has a constant deceleration of 0.3 m/s 2, determine (i) when and where A will overtake B, (ii) the speed of each car at that time. 7 -7- Q4. [a] If the coefficient of kinetic friction between the 100 kg crate and the plane is k = 0.25, determine the speed of the crate at the instant the compression of the spring is x = 1.5 m. Initially the spring is unstretched and the crate is at rest as shown in Figure Q4[a].
