Proc. Indian Acad. Sci. (Math. Sci.) It is proved that the complex double Fourier series of an integrable function f(x,y) with coefficients {c jk } satisfying certain conditions, will converge in L 1 - norm. The conditions used here are the combinations of Tauberian condition of Hardy Karamata kind and its limiting case. This paper extends the result of Bray [1] to complex double Fourier series. Keywords. Complex double Fourier series; L 1 -convergence of Fourier series; Cesàro means; de Ia Vallée-Poussin means; Tauberian condition of Hardy Karamata kind. Let {c jk } be the Fourier coefficients of an integrable function f(x,y) on the twodimensional torus T 2 [ π,π) [ π,π). We consider the double Fourier series of f, j i( jx+ky) (1.1) k with rectangular partial sums S mn (x,y) and Cesàro means σ mn (x,y) defined by S mn ( f ;x,y) i( jx+ky), j m k n σ mn ( f ;x,y) 1 (m+1)(n+1) m j0 n k0 and for > 1, the de Ia Vallée-Poussin means by S jk (x,y) (m,n 0) V n ( f,x,y) 1 ([] m)([] n) [] jm+1 [] S jk (x,y), kn+1 where [t] stands for the greatest integer t, for a positive real number t. For f in L 1 (T 2 ), f π π π π f(x,y) dx dy stands for the L1 -norm. The aim of this paper is to show that for a function f in L 1 (T 2 ), under certain conditions on the double Fourier series, the rectangular partial sums S mn converge in L 1 -norm to f, that is, S mn f 0 as m,n. Our result belongs to the extensive study in the literature of what are called L 1 -convergence classes in one as well as two variables. In the 355
356 Kulwinder Kaur, S S Bhatia and Babu Ram single variable case, we particularly refer to [1], [2], [3] (see [2] for further references) and for double Fourier series we are aware of [4] and [8]. For functions f of a single variable with the Fourier series n c n e inx, a set of conditions on the coefficients c n is said to define an L 1 -convergence class if, under these conditions, S n f o(n) if and only if c n logn o(n). (1.2) Here S n is the nth partial sum of the Fourier series, S n n k n c ke ikx and is the L 1 -norm on [ π,π). The obvious modification in the definition of L 1 -convergence class for double Fourier series is to demand instead of (1.2) S mn f 0 if and only if c mn logmlogn 0 as min (m,n). Our result is weaker in not having any only if part as in the above. To put the conditions in our result in perspective we quote the condition for single Fourier series [] 1 n k p 1 c k p 0, (1 < p 2). (1.3) This condition used in [1] and [2] is a Tauberian condition of the Hardy Karamata kind [3] and is a weaker version of the conditions used by Fomin [5], Kolmogorov [6], Littlewood [7] and Teljakovskii [9]. A limiting condition of (1.3) as p 1 is 1 n (logn) [] c k 0 (1.4) which can be thought of as the prototype of the conditions we use in our result (conditions (3.1) to (3.4) below). Our conditions have points of contact with [8] and our results are simpler than those of [8] and [9]. Our methods are heavily dependent on some identities in trigonometric series involving the de la Valleé-Poussin means Vmn. The identities are developed in 2 and the main result is proved in 3. We end this section by explaining some notations. Let 00 c jk c jk ; pq c jk p 1,q c jk p 1,q c j+1,k (p 1), pq c jk p,q 1 c jk p,q 1 c j,k+1 (q 1). We mention that a double induction argument gives pq c jk p s0 q t0( 1) s+t( p s )( ) q c j+s, k+t. t In this paper, we use the differences pq with p,q 2. For f L 1 (T 2 ), the symbols S mn ( f) and S mn ( f,x,y) will have the same meaning as S mn. Similarly σ mn ( f) σ mn ( f ;x,y) σ mn
L 1 -convergence of complex double Fourier series 357 and V n ( f) V n ( f ;x,y) V n. In the sequel [] where n is a positive integer and > 1 is a real number. Finally, we define the functions E 0+ (x) E 0 (x) 1 2,E n(x) n k0 eikt,n Z and E n (x) E n ( x). We have E k (x) C log k, where C is an absolute constant. 2. Lemmas In order to establish our result, we need the following lemmas: Lemma 2.1.[2]. For m, n 0 and > 1, the following representation holds: S mn σ mn m n (σ, σ m, n σ m, n + σ mn ) + m (σ, n σ mn )+ n (σ m, σ mn ) j m k n k i( jx+ky) n j m c i( jx+ky) jke j m k i( jx+ky). n Lemma 2.2. For m, n 0 and > 1, we have the following representation: Proof. We have V n S mn V n( f,x,y) + j m + j m k i( jx+ky) n k i( jx+ky) n j k n m m c jke i( jx+ky). 1 ( m)( n) jm+1 S jk (x,y). kn+1

Let f L 1 (T 2 ), and {c jk } be its Fourier coefficients. If (log j )(log k ) 10 c jk 0, as k, (3.1) (log j )(log k ) 01 c jk 0, as j, (3.2) k 0± lim 1 lim n lim 1 lim m k 0± j m Then S mn ( f) f o(1) as min(m,n). (log j )(log k ) 11 c jk 0, (3.3) (log j )(log k ) 11 c jk 0. (3.4) Proof of the Theorem. Since f L 1 (T 2 ) therefore σ mn ( f) f o(1) as min(m,n) (see, e.g. [10], vol. 2, p. 309). It follows that Vmn f o(1) as (m,n). Consequently it is sufficient to prove that V n S mn o(1) as min(m,n).
L 1 -convergence of complex double Fourier series 361 Combining the results of Lemmas , we have It follows from (1.6), V n S mn R 1 (m,n;x,y)+r 2 (m,n;x,y) R 3 (m,n;x,y) R 1 (m,n;x,y) 1 j m R 4 (m,n;x,y)+r 5 (m,n;x,y) R 0 (m,n;x,y), + 1 R2 (m,n;x,y) 1 n j k m n 11c jk E j (x)e k (y) 1 k n n 11c jk E j (x)e k (y) 1 n 1 j + j m k 0± m m 11c jk E j (x)e k (y), m n m 1 10 c jk E j (x)e k (y) R3 1 (m,n;x,y) 10 c jk E j (x)e k (y), n 1 01 c jk E j (x)e k (y) k 0± R4 1 (m,n;x,y) 01 c jk E j (x)e k (y), j m k 0± R5 (m,n;x,y) 1 1 m n 1 j m m 10c jk E j (x)e k (y) 1 j n n 01c jk E j (x)e k (y), R0 (m,n;x,y) c jk E j (x)e k (y). j m R 1 (m,n;x,y) 1 C{ + c jk E j (x)e k (y), (log j )(log k ) 11 c jk } (log j )(log k ) 11 c jk.
362 Kulwinder Kaur, S S Bhatia and Babu Ram Thus, by (3.3) and (3.4), we get 1 m,n R 1 (m,n;x,y) 1 0. R2 (m,n;x,y) R 21 (m,n;x,y)+r 22 (m,n;x,y), where R21 (m,n;x,y) 1 n R22 (m,n;x,y) 1 m 10 c jk E j (x)e k (y) 1 j n jm m m 10c jk E j (x)e k (y), m R21 (m,n;x,y) 1 n j 0 n n 1 01 c jk E j (x)e k (y) k ±0 1 k n n 01c jk E j (x)e k (y), 10 c jk E j (x)e k (y) 1 j m 1 ( m)( n) 1 i m By (1.6) and (3.1), for > 1, we conclude that 1 m,n R 21 (m,n;x,y) 1 0. Similarly, by (1.6) and (3.2), for > 1, we have 1 m,n R 22 (m,n;x,y) 1 0. By (3.1) and (3.2), we get m,n R 3 (m,n;x,y) 1 0, 1 1 m,n R 4 (m,n;x,y) 1 0. j m m 10c jk E j (x)e k (y) ( i 10 c jk E j (x)e k (y) j 0 Taking into account c jk u j 10c uk, and by (3.1), we find that c jk log j log k o(1) as min( j, k ). ).
L 1 -convergence of complex double Fourier series 363 Combining this with (1.6), we conclude that R5 (m,n;x,y) max m<u n<v n R0 (u,v;x,y) as min(m,n). Combining all what we have done so far, we conclude the desired result.
