Interference of Conversion and Bremsstrahlung Amplitudes in the Decay K L µ + µ γ arxiv:hep-ph/22262v 8 Dec 22 P. Poulose and L. M. Sehgal Institute of Theoretical Physics E, RWTH Aachen, D-5256 Aachen, Germany Abstract In the region of large µ + µ invariant mass, the decay spectrum of K L µ + µ γ deviates from the Dalitz pair spectrum, as a result of interference between conversion (K L γ γ µ + µ γ) and bremsstrahlung amplitudes. The latter is proportional to the K L µ + µ matri element, whose 2γ-absorptive part appears to dominate the observed K L µ + µ decay rate. We eamine the etent to which a scrutiny of the K L µ + µ γ spectrum in the end-point region could provide evidence on the real part of the K L µ + µ amplitude. As a by-product, we obtain the absorptive part of the K L γ γ form factor, using data on the K L π + π γ spectrum. It is customary to interpret the decays K L e + e γ and K L µ + µ γ in terms of a Dalitz pair process K L γ γ l + l γ. The branching ratio and the lepton mass spectrum are fitted to an s-dependent K L γ γ verte f Kγγ (s) = f Kγγ ()f(s), where f Kγγ () is a dimensionless parameter related to the decay width of K L γγ by f Kγγ () 2 = 64π m K Γ(K L γγ) () and f(s) is a form factor. The spectrum in the invariant mass of the lepton pair (s = (p + + p ) 2 ) is given by [] dγ(k L l + l γ)/ds Γ(K L γγ) = 2α ( s ) 3 ( ) ( ) /2 + 2m2 l 4m2 l 3π s s s f(s) 2 (2) Preprint submitted to Elsevier Science 3 June 2
A popular choice of the form factor f(s) is the BMS parametrization [2] f BMS (s) = s m 2 ρ + 2.3α K s 4 3 s m 2 ρ 9 s 2 9 m 2 ω s m 2 φ (3) where the first term is the ρ-dominance approimation, and the remainder is a correction term depending on an unknown parameter α K. Measurements on the decays K L e + e γ [3] and K L µ + µ γ [4,5] can be understood in a fairly consistent way with a value α K.9. Other one-parameter forms for f(s) have also been discussed in the literature [6]. In the end-point region s, one epects the decay K L l + l γ to show a deviation from the Dalitz pair spectrum Eq. (2), due to internal bremsstrahlung from the underlying transition K L l + l. Because of the chiral suppression of the latter, the bremsstrahlung effect is of relevance mainly for the channel K L µ + µ γ. Considering that the branching ratio Br(K L µ + µ ) is 7 9, one epects the bremsstrahlung contribution to Br(K L µ + µ γ) to be of order, and confined to photons of very low energy. There is, however, the possibility of an interference effect between the bremsstrahlung and Dalitz pair amplitudes that could conceivably probe the real part of the K L µ + µ amplitude. It is this possibility that we wish to eplore in this paper. It may be recalled that if the K L µ + µ f Kll uγ 5 v, the decay rate is amplitude is parametrized as Γ(K L l + l )= f kll 2 m K v 8π, ( ) /2 v = 4m2 l (4) The imaginary part of the K L l + l amplitude can be reliably calculated in terms of K L 2γ, by considering the absorptive contribution of the twophoton intermediate state (K L γγ l + l ), with the result [7] Imf Kll = α 4v m l m K ln ( + v v ) f Kγγ () (5) The measured branching ratio of K L µ + µ is almost saturated by the two-photon absorptive part, the real part being limited by [8] Ref Kll /Imf Kll.23 (9% C.L.) (6) 2
In considering the possible interference of bremsstrahlung and conversion amplitudes, it is necessary to take account of a possible imaginary part in the K L γ γ form factor f(s). Such an imaginary part is epected, quite generally, in the region s > 4m 2 π, and is not included in the BMS parametrization Eq. (3). As a simple model for Imf(s), we consider a π + π intermediate state in the virtual photon channel. One can then use unitarity to obtain Imf(s) in terms of the form factor characterising the K L π + π γ verte, and the electromagnetic form factor of the pion (Fig. ). We define the invariant amplitude for the direct emission (M) transition K L π + π γ in the conventional way [9] M ( K L π + (p + )π (p )γ(ǫ, k) ) = ǫ µνρσ ǫ µ k ν p ρ +p σ Cg M (s) (7) where s = (p + + p ) 2 and C is a normalization factor given by C =e f S m 4 K [ ] /2 6πmK f S = Γ(K S π + π ) (8) β ( β = 4m2 π ) /2 Eperiments have determined the form factor g M (s) to be [] g M (s) = a m 2 ρ s + a 2 (9) with a 2 =.35 and a a 2 adequately represented by f em π (s) = s m 2 ρ =.737 GeV 2. The pion charge form factor is () In terms of g M (s) and fπ em (s), we have calculated the imaginary part of the K L γ γ form factor to be Imf(s) = [ α f S 6 m K s ] fπ em (s)g M (s)v 3 Θ(s 4m 2 f Kγγ () π) () with v = s, s being the mass of the virtual photon. This is plotted in Fig. 2, where we also show the real part of f(s), taken to be the BMS form 3
factor. For comparison, we also indicate in Fig. 2 the result for Imf(s) that one would obtain from postulating a comple ρ-pole with a momentum-dependent ( ). decay width, f(s) s i Γρ m 2 ρ m ρ v 3 We are now in a position to calculate the decay spectrum of K L µ + µ γ, taking into account the interference of conversion and bremsstrahlung. Defining γ = 2Eγ m K = ( s ) as the scaled photon energy ( < m 2 γ < 4r, K r = m2 l ), the distribution in γ is given by dγ(k L µ + µ ( γ) = d γ 2 απ (2π) 3m3 K ) [Dal + Int + Brem] (2) where the three terms, denoting Dalitz, interference and bremsstrahlung contributions, are given by Dal = f Kγγ () 2 f(s) 2m2 K s 2 2 γ v( γ + 2r) Int = f Kγγ ()Re(fKll f(s)) m µ 2 γ s m ln + v K v Brem = f Kll 2 [ 2v ) γ + (2 + 4 rγ 2γ m 2 γ ln + v ] K γ v (3) The different contributions to the decay rate dγ(k L µ + µ γ) d ( γ = s ) are plotted in Fig. 3. The Dalitz pair spectrum shown in fig. 3a dominates up to.95, and essentially accounts for the measured branching ratio Br(K L µ + µ γ) The interference terms proportional to Ref Kll Ref(s) and Imf Kll Imf(s) are shown separately in Fig. 3b and 3c, where we have chosen Ref Kll equal to the maimum value allowed by the eperimental rate of K L µ + µ (Eq. (6)). The interference terms are competitive with the Dalitz pair spectrum only in the region.97, where the branching ratio is of order per unit of. In the same region the pure bremsstrahlung contribution shown in Fig. 3d begins to dominate the spectrum. The principal conclusion of this paper is embodied in Fig. 4, which shows the full spectrum dbr(k L µ + µ γ) in the interesting end-point interval.92 < d <.. In this region, the spectrum deviates in a systematic way from the monotonically decreasing Dalitz pair spectrum, going through a minimum around.97, and then rising sharply as approaches unity, in the manner characteristic of bremsstrahlung. The interference terms affect the detailed shape of the spectrum in the neighbourhood of the minimum, but only at a level in the differential branching ratio. In particular, the difference 4
between choosing Ref Kll /Imf Kll to be +.23 or.23 is almost unobservable with the resolution chosen in Fig. 3. We conclude that while the spectrum of the decay K L µ + µ γ should show an interesting departure from the Dalitz pair spectrum for large invariant masses, there is little realistic prospect of being able to etract the real part of the K L µ + µ amplitude from such a measurement. As a by-product of our analysis, we have determined the imaginary part of the K L γ γ form factor, relying entirely on an empirical measurement of the spectrum of K L π + π γ. This imaginary part provides a well-defined correction to eisting models of this form factor.
