Deflected and Dual unification SAA and Valya Khoze, JHEP0811:024,2008, ArXiV:
Outline Landau poles in direct gauge mediation Solution 1: Deflected Unification Solution 2: Dual unification Dual unified SU(5)
Landau poles in direct gauge mediation: SM sector SUSY sector
Landau poles in direct gauge mediation: SM sector too many flavours SUSY sector
Landau poles in direct gauge mediation: example Based on Seiberg duality: the electric model consists of... N =1gauge SU(N) mesons Q j Qj ; i, j =1... F Q fundamental electric quarks Q a i ; a =1... N antifundamentals (Dirac mass m Q ) Q i a The gauge coupling runs as e 8π2 /g 2 (E) = ( ) b0 E Λ If the beta-function is negative b 0 =3N F Q > 0 then hit Landau pole
Landau poles in direct gauge mediation: example The magnetic model found by matching baryons and global anomalies is N =1gauge SU(n) n = F Q N mesons M j i ; i, j =1... F Q fundamental magnetic quarks qi a ; a =1... n antifundamentals q i a Runs to weak coupling in IR if b 0 =3n F Q < 0 so strong->ir-free if N +1 F Q 3 2 N
Landau poles in direct gauge mediation: example The origin is metastable because of approximate R-symmetry Nelson, Seiberg Abe, Kobayashi, Omura W = W cl + W dyn : M anomalously broken by W dyn
Landau poles in direct gauge mediation: example Complete example: deform ISS for direct gauge mediation (SAA, Durnford, Jaeckel, Khoze) W = M ij q i. q j Tr(µ 2 ISSM)+mε ab ε rs q a r q b s where r, s =1, 2 are the 1st and 2nd flavour numbers. Take n =2,F Q =7 (µ 2 ISS ) ij = diag{µ 2 2I 2,µ 2 5I 5 } and gauge the remaining SU(5) f G SM
Landau poles in direct gauge mediation: example q a i=1..5 q a i=1..5 The mediators are and and the typical scalar mass is m scalar g2 A 16π 2 µ 2 This is a model of slightly split SUSY.
Landau poles in direct gauge mediation: example Direct gauge mediation is attractive but typically a problem - a large contribution to the beta-functions... In this case (and typically) since the additional fields are in complete SU(5) multiplets there is a universal contribution above messenger scale 1/! ba = b (MSSM) A 9 W mess GUT
Solution 1: Deflected unification The physics of the ISS sector changes at the strong coupling scale (i.e. the Landau pole scale of the ISS part of the theory)... SU(2) mg SU(5) el SU(5) SM SU(2) f SU(5) SM SU(2) f
Solution 1: Deflected unification So the effective number of degrees of freedom decreases above the Landau pole scale of the SUSY-breaking ISS sector... 1/! Magnetic hidden Electric hidden sector W mess GUT
Solution 1: Deflected unification A Landau pole is avoided if this happens at a low enough scale... e.g. Λ ISS µ 2 (α 1 GUT )(MSSM) 4 log(λ ISS /µ 2 ) + 5 log(m GUT /µ 2 ) Landau pole avoided if... µ GeV. Can be (just about) met by this model.
Solution 2: Dual unification Could it be that the MSSM is itself a magnetic dual theory, with apparent GUTs in the magnetic theory mirroring unification in electric theory? (Klebanov Strassler)!"! Magnetic Electric W mess GUT
Solution 2: Dual unification This picture is correct in known (Kutasov, Schwimmer, Seiberg) elec/mag duals to GUTs with adjoint X that breaks the GUT symmetry! Works as follows: first need a superpotential for X... W el = k 1 i=0 t i k +1 i Tr [ X k+1 i] When GUT symmetry unbroken then SU(n) =SU(kF Q N)
Solution 2: Dual unification Additional terms give the same GUT breaking in both theories: SU(N) SU(r 1 ) SU(r 2 )... SU(r k ) U(1) k 1 SU(n) =SU(kF Q N) SU( r 1 ) SU( r 2 )... SU( r k ) U(1) k 1, where r i = F Q r i. Example... elec: SU(21) SU(11) SU(10) U(1), mag: SU(5) SU(2) SU(3) U(1),
Solution 2: Dual unification Moreover unification in electric theory implies unification in magnetic theory. (SAA, Khoze) elec: SU(21) SU(11) SU(10) U(1), mag: SU(5) SU(2) SU(3) U(1), Log Q GeV
Dual unified SU(5) Electric theory: SU(11) Sp(1) 3 )). SU(11) Sp(1) a R p Y a=1...3 i Q J= H J= F J=1,2 1 i F J=1,2 1 i X Adj 1 1 Z a 1 i W B = m X 2 X2 + s 0 3 X3 + κ i ZY X i H +λ ij QX i YYX j H + λ ij FX i YYX j F + λ HX ij i F QX j F + λ FX ij i F FX j F. couplings carry dimensions.
Dual unified SU(5) Chain of well understood dualities... SU(11)xSp(1) 3 KSS duality SU(5)xSp(1) 3 Sp(1) Confinement SU(5)
Dual unified SU(5) Magnetic theory: SU(5) SU(5) R p h J= q J= f J=1,2 i f J=1,2 i x Adj 1 a a 1 h a 1 W B = m x 2 x2 s 0 3 x3 + κ i hx i s h + λ i ij hx s ax j s q + λ U aah + λ fx ij i sax j f s + quartic,
Dual unified SU(5) Magnetic theory: SU(5) MSSM mu-term SU(5) R p h J= q J= f J=1,2 i f J=1,2 i x Adj 1 a a 1 h a 1 W B = m x 2 x2 s 0 3 x3 + κ i hx i s h + λ i ij hx s ax j s q + λ U aah + λ fx ij i sax j f s + quartic, Up quark Yukawas generated by instantons
Dual unified SU(5) Application to proton decay - why does nature seem to unify but the proton not decay? u e u e ~ H ε ijk E c U c i U c j Dc k ~ d u~ ~ d u ~ d ~ g u d g ~ u Note that the effective operator is a baryon : εaa(a Q) εeuud
Dual unified SU(5) The baryon number violation proportional to a baryon operator in the magnetic theory but this is generated in the electric theory: on dimensional grounds expect W el Qd M d 3 GUT Q where represents generic electric fields and d is at least N. But we know how to map to the operator in the magnetic theory ε ijk E c U c i U c j Dc k Λ4 d Q d hence W eff ( Λ M GUT ) d 4 1 M GUT ε ijk E c U c i U c j Dc k
Dual unified SU(5) In this case (X is dimensionless)... W = ( FX) 2 F 2 (XY ) 7 (YX H) M 10 GUT ( Λ M GUT ) 9 εaa(a Q) M GUT
Dual unified SU(5) Preserving unification prediction: need 2-loop accuracy (~5%), but have only 1-loop matching No - Dual GUTs have the same predictive accuracy if ( Λ M GUT > 10 6
Summary Deflected unification can save direct gauge mediation from Landau poles Dual unification can happily accommodate them... New methods for finding electric/magnetic duals
