A note on Quantile curves based bivariate reliability concepts Sreelakshmi N Sudheesh K Kattumannil arxiv: v [stat.me] 27 Apr 27 Indian Statistical Institute, Chennai, India Abstract Several attempts were made in the literature to generalize univariate reliability concepts to bivariate as well as multivariate set up. Here we extend the univariate quantile based reliability concepts to bivariate case based on quantile curves. We propose quantile curves based bivariate hazard rate bivariate mean residual life function study their uniqueness properties to determine the underlying quantile curve. A relationship between them is also derived. Introduction A probability distribution of a continuous rom variable X can be represented either in terms of distribution function F(x) or by the quantile function defined by Q X (u) = inf{x : F(x) u}; u. Gilchrist (2) discussed various properties uses of quantile functions in statistical modeling. Nair et al. (23) proposed univariate reliability concepts in a quantile frame work studied the properties in detail. Many researchers generalised the concepts based on univariate quantile functions to bivariate as well as multivariate set up. Tukey (977) defined the concept of depth function using the characterizations based on minimizing distances which is followed by the proposal of the concept, zonoid quantile by Koshevoy Mosler (997) median balls by Averous Meste (997). Later multivariate quantiles are defined as half
planes by Nolan (992) Massé Theodorescu (994). A series of papers appeared about the generalization of univariate quantile which include Koltchinskii (997), Chen Welsh (22), Mosler (22) Serfling (22). Fernández-Ponce Suarez-Llorens (22) defined the multivariate quantile as a set of points which accumulate the same probability for a fixed orthant known as quantile curves. Belzunce et al. (27) used this concept of quantile curves to study the dependence structure of bivariate distribution functions. For this purpose, the authors used the concept of copula we need some definitions notations to discuss this idea, which is explained below. Let X = (X,Y) be a bivariate absolutely continuous rom vector x = (x,y) be a point in R 2. Let F(.) G(.) be the marginal distribution functions of X Y respectively. Also let F ε (x) be the joint distribution function of X. Denote the four directions in the two dimensional plane as ε = (ε,ε 2 ) with ε i {,};i =,2. To simplify the notation, we use + to represent +, respectively. For example, F ε (x) = P [X x,y y]. The p th bivariate quantile curve for the direction ε denoted by Q X (p,ε) defined as Q X (p,ε) = { (x) R 2 : F ε (x) = p }, p. As an example, for the rom vector X having bivariate Pareto distribution with independent components following univariate Pareto distribution with scale parameter k shape parameter α, it is possible to plot four quantile curves in four directions for each p [,]. For the direction ε ++ we can get the quantile curve by plotting xy = k 2 p /α for p. Sklar (959) introduced the concept of copula which is a bivariate distribution function with uniformmarginals on[,]. For thejoint distributionfunctionf ε with margins F G, there exists a copula C such that F ε (x) = C(F(x),G(y)). 2
Suppose F(x) = u G(y) = v, then x = F (u) = Q X (u) y = G (v) = Q Y (v). Therefore F ε (Q X (u),q Y (v)) depends only on the copula C for each direction ε is obtained as (Belzunce et al., 27) F ε (Q X (u),q Y (v)) = C(u,v); when ε = ε u C(u,v); when ε = ε + v C(u,v); when ε = ε + u v +C(u,v); when ε = ε ++, u v. Sreelakshmi (27) introduced the bivariate reliability concepts using dependence structure studied properties as well as characterizations based on the relationship between copula based bivariate hazard rate bivariate mean residual life. For each direction, the probability F ε (.) is written in terms of copula thus lead to the construction of bivariate reliability concepts. For the bivariate rom vector X = (X, Y), Belzunce et al. (27) showed that the quantile curves can be expressed by means of quantiles of the conditional distributions of Y X x Y X x given by Q X (p,ε ) {(Q X (u),q Y X QX (u)( p ) } u ) : u > p {( ) } p Q X (p,ε + ) Q X (u),q Y X QX (u)( u ) : u < p Q X (p,ε + ) {(Q X (u),q Y X QX (u)( p ) } u ) : u > p {( Q X (p,ε ++ ) Q X (u),q Y X QX (u)( p ) } u ) : u < p. () u,p. In short, the four level curves can be expressed in terms of dependence structure (using the concept of copula) or by means of quantiles of conditional distributions. It is interesting to note that the second way of expressing the level curve does not require any dependence measure it requires only the quantiles of conditional distributions. Motivated by the above fact, in the present work an attempt is made to study the reliability concepts in bivariate set up using quantiles of conditional distributions. The extension of univariate quantile based reliability concepts to the bivariate set up can 3
be done on the basis of the four directions. Here we consider the bivariate reliability concepts in the direction ε. The other directions can be studied in similar fashion. Section 2 gives the definitions on quantile curves based bivariate hazard rate bivariate mean residual life function their uniqueness properties relationship are explained in Section 3. 2 Quantile curves based bivariate reliability concepts To introduce the bivariate reliability concepts based on quantile curves, we need some notations which are explained below. Let X = (X,Y) be the bivariate rom vector with univariate marginal distribution function F(.) G(.). Suppose that F(x) = u so that x = F (u) = Q X (u) G(y) = v so that y = G (v) = Q Y (v). Let Y X = Y X x G (y) = P(Y y X x) = P X. Therefore, Y X = G (P X) = φ(p X ). Also X Y = X Y y G 2 (x) = P(X x Y y) = P Y which yields X Y = G 2 (P Y) = ψ(p Y ). Next we propose the definitions for bivariate hazard rate as well as bivariate mean residual life based on quantile curves for the direction ε. From (), the quantile curve in the direction ε, Q X (p,ε ) is a vector containing u th quantile corresponding to the rom variable X denoted as Q X (u) Q Y X QX (u)(p/u) which is the quantile function corresponds to the rom variable Y X a point that accumulates probability p u to the left tail p u to the right tail provided u > p. Based on the above vector of two quantile functions, we look into the definitions of quantile curves based bivariate reliability concepts. Definition. The bivariate hazard rate in the direction ε in terms of quantile curves can be defined as the vector h ε (u,p X ) = (h (u),h 2 (P X )) (2) with h (u) = ( u)q X (u) h 2 (P X ) = ( P X )φ (P X ), (3) 4
prime denotes the differentiation. Apartfromthehazardrate, itisofmuchinterestinstudyingtheconceptofremaining life time of a unit given it has survived up to a particular time point t. To know about the definition properties of bivariate mean residual life, one can refer to Nair Nair (989) Kulkarni Rattihalli (996). Here we give definition of the quantile curves based bivariate mean residual life function. Definition 2. The quantile curves based bivariate mean residual life function for the direction ε as m ε (u,p X ) = (m (u),m 2 (P X )), (4) m (u) = Q X (z) Q X (u) (5) u u m 2 (P X ) = φ(z) φ(p X ). (6) P X P X Remark. If we interchange X Y, we obtain another vector for the bivariate hazard rate in the direction ε is given by H ε (v,p Y ) = (H (v),h 2 (P Y )) (7) H (v) = ( v)q Y (v) H 2 (P Y ) = ( P Y )ψ (P Y ). Also the bivaraite mean residual life is given by M ε (v,p Y ) = (M (v),m 2 (P Y )), (8) M (v) = Q Y (z) Q Y (v) v v 5
M 2 (P Y ) = ψ(z) ψ(p Y ). P Y P Y 3 Properties Characterizations In this section we study the uniqueness property of the concepts derived in previous section. Also we look into the relationship between the bivariate hazard rate bivariate mean residual life in the quantile curves based approach. Next two theorems provide the uniqueness properties of quantile curves based bivariate hazard rate bivariate mean residual life. We omit the proof of theorems stated in this section since the derivation is similar to that of univariate quantile based reliabilty concepts given in Nair et al. (23). Theorem. For the bivariate rom vector X, quantile curve based bivariate hazard rate defined by (2) determines the underlying quantile curve Q X (p,ε ) uniquely. Here Q X (p,ε ) is obtained as Q X (p,ε ) = (Q X (u),φ(p X )), Q X (u) = φ(p X ) = u PX ( z)h (z) ( z)h 2 (z). Theorem 2. For the bivariate rom vector X, the quantile curve can be expressed uniquely in terms of m ε (u,p X ) through Q X (p,ε ) = (Q X (u),φ(p X )), u m (z) Q X (u) = µ X m (u)+ z 6
PX m 2 (z) φ(p X ) = µ YX m 2 (P X )+ z, µ X µ YX are the means corresponding to the rom variables X Y X, respectively. The quantile curve based bivariate hazard rate obtained after interchanging X Y given in (8) uniquely determines the underlying quantile curve through Q Y (v) = v ( z)h (z) ψ(p Y ) = PY ( z)h 2 (z). Similarly the bivariate mean residual life given in (9) determines the quantile curve through v M (z) Q Y (v) = µ Y M (v)+ z PY ψ(p Y ) = µ XY M 2 (P Y )+ M 2 (z) z, µ Y µ XY are the means of the rom variables Y X Y respectively. Theorem 3. For the bivariate rom vector X, the quantile curves based bivariate hazard rate bivariate mean residual life function are related through the relationship ( u)m (u) = u h (z) ( P X )m 2 (P X ) = P X h 2 (z). Remark 2. The above proposed quantile curves based bivariate reliability concepts can be also done in reversed time setup. This yields the definitions of bivariate reversed hazard rate bivariate reversed mean residual life function in a quantile curves based approach. 7
