On the Deurng Polynomal for Drnfel Moules n Legenre Form Alp Bassa an Peter Beelen arxv: v1 [math.nt] 31 Oct 2018 Abstract We stuy a famly ψ λ of F q[t]-drnfel moules, whch s a natural analog of Legenre ellptc curves. We then fn a surprsng recurrence gvng the corresponng Deurng polynomal H pt λcharactersng supersngular LegenreDrnfel moules ψ λ ncharacterstc pt. 1 Introucton Inths paper we motvate the efnton of a famly of Drnfel moules ntrouce n 2011 n a prelmnary verson of ths work [1] an name Legenre Drnfel moules by El-Guny n [6]. We nvestgate an analog of the Deurng polynomal for these Legenre Drnfel moules. We show how these polynomals can be obtane very easly usng a smple recurrence. More precsely, let A = F q[t] an let L be an A-fel wth the structure homomorphsm γ : A L. We assume that L has A-characterstc ker γ = pt, wth pt T an egpt =. An F q[t]-drnfel moule ψ λ n Legenre form s gven by ψ λ T = λ q λ q 1τ2 λ q λ + τ + q 1 wth λ / F q. It can been seen that every Drnfel moule s somorphc to a Drnfel moule n Legenre form. The Deurng polynomal H pt for the prme pt s efne as H pt s = s λ, where the prouct s taken over all λ L such that ψ λ s supersngular. H pt s characterzes the supersngular λ-nvarants. We show that H pt s can be obtane easly usng a recurrence: Theorem 1 For 1 we efne the polynomals U s A[s] recursvely by: U 1s = 0, U 0s = 1 an U +1s = s q s q q Us Tq T s q s q 1q 1 U 1s, for 0. 2 Let pt T be an rreucble polynomal n A wth egpt =. Then H pt s = U pt s, where U pt s enotes the reucton of U s moulo pt. NotethatH pt ssobtanebyreuctonofu s, whchepensontheegreeofpt only! Polynomals wth such propertes are calle unversal supersngular polynomals. Unversal supersngular nvarants at the level of the j-lne have prevously been nvestgate by Cornelssen [3, 4], El-Guny Papankolas [5], El-Guny [6], Gekeler [9, 11] an Schwezer [13]. Alternatvely, one can conser Drnfel moules at a hgher level, whch we prevously have calle the u-lne n [1], an whch are weak analogs of Legenre ellptc curves. For 0 we conser the Drnfel moule ψ T = τ 2 +τ + As shown below, the -lne correspons to the moular curve X 0T an forms a egree q + 1 cover of the j-lne X1. An analogous Deurng polynomal h pt s charactersng supersngular -nvarants n A-characterstc pt can be efne as well an we show below that t s obtane smlarly as the reucton of recursvely gven polynomals u s moulo pt, see Theorem 7. Classcally, for an ellptc curve E λ /C n Legenre form the ntegrals gvng the peros of the corresponng lattce can be expresse n terms of the hypergeometrc functon 2F 11/2,1/2,1;s. The Deurng polynomal, charactersng λ-nvarants of supersngular Legenre ellptc curves n characterstc p s obtane as the truncaton of the expresson for the real pero n terms of 2F 11/2,1/2,1;s by reucng t moulo p. El-Guny [6] has obtane formulas for peros of Legenre Drnfel moules an has shown, usng the charactersaton of the Deurng polynomal h pt s gven n a prelmnary verson [1] of ths paper, that ther truncatons precsely gves the Deurng polynomals h pt s. Note that n [8] Gekeler gves an stues an analog of the Deurng polynomal for the famly of Drnfel moules gven by φ T = τ 2 + λτ + T. As for the -famly above, the λ-lne n [8] s a egree q +1 coverng of the j-lne, gven however by the relaton j = λ q+1. The corresponng Deurng polynomal also behaves smlarly as ts classcal counterpart. However the analogy wth the classcal case s not as strong. The results n ths work have appeare n a prelmnary arxv verson [1] n Snce the am n [1] was the constructon of asymptotcally optmal towers of functon fels, results on the Deurng polynomal were hen n the exposton an ther proof epene on the optmalty of the towers. We gve an exposton nepenent of towers an a self-contane proof usng a result about corresponences from [2]. We woul lke to thank Ahma El- Guny for pontng out that these results are of nepenent nterest. 2 Drnfel moules n Legenre form To motvate the efnton of Legenre Drnfel moules, we start be recallng the stuaton n the case of ellptc curves. For etals see [14]. Let k be a fel wth char k 2. Let E be an ellptc curve over k, gven by the equaton y 2 = x e 1x e 2x e 3, wth the e stnct. The 2-torson ponts are gven by e 1,0,e 2,0,e 3,0 an. The amssble change of varables x = e 2 e 1x +e 1, y = e 2 e 1 3/2 y maps the orere torson ponts respectvely on 0,0, 1,0, λ,0 an an gves the somorphc ellptc curve E n Legenre form y 2 = xx 1x λ, wth λ = 2 e3 e1 e 2 e 1. 1
Hence for every ellptc curve, we can fn an somorphc ellptc curve n Legenre form, so that the somorphsm maps two chosen nontrval 2-torson ponts e 1,0 an e 2,0 on the 2-torson ponts 0,0 an 1,0, respectvely. For an ellptc curve E the orerng on the 2- torson ponts e 1,0,e 2,0,e 3,0 correspons to a choce of orere bass e 1,0,e 2,0 for thez/2z-vector space E[2], an thebass vectors are mappe on 0,0 an1,0 respectvely by the change of varable. Hence we can see λ as a unformzer for the moular curve X2. The j-nvarant of the Legenre Ellptc Curve 1 s gven by jλ = 2 8 λ 2 λ+1 3 λ 2 λ 1 2. Ths gves the relaton between λ an the functon j on X1. We obtan a surjectve map k\{0,1} k λ jλ, whch s sx-to-one, except above j = 0 an j = Suppose k s a fel of postve characterstc p 2. The ellptc curve E gven by Equaton 1 s supersngular, f an only f the coeffcent of x p 1 n xx 1x λ p 1/2 s zero. Let m = p 1/2 an efne the Deurng polynomal 2 m m H ps = s. =0 The coeffcent of x p 1 n xx 1x λ p 1/2 s gven up to a sgn by H pλ. Therefore for λ 0,1, the ellptc curve y 2 = xx 1x λ s supersngular f an only f H pλ = 0. The analogous pcture for Drnfel moules looks as follows: Let A = F q[t] an let L be an A-fel wth the structure homomorphsm γ : A L. The role of the prme 2 above wll be playe by the prme T, so we assume throughout that L has A-characterstc ker γ = pt T, wth egpt =. Let ϕ be a Drnfel A-moule efne over L of rank 2. Let e 1,e 2 be an F q[t]/ T bass for the T-torson ϕ[t]. As above we specfy an somorphsm usng the torson pont e 1: conser the somorphc Drnfel moule ψ, wth an somorphsm from ψ to ϕ gven by the egree zero atve polynomal e 1 = e 1τ 0 : e 1 ψ T = ϕ T e 1. The T-torson pont e 1 of ϕ s mappe onto T-torson pont 1 of ψ an f ψ T = τ 2 +gτ +, 0 then ψ T1 = +g + = 0, so g = + an ψ T = τ 2 +τ + = τ τ 1 2 Note that the F q[t]-submoule F q e 1 of ϕ[t] of rank 1 s mappe onto the submoule F q of ψ[t]. Hence can be seen as a unformzer for the moular curve X 0T. The T-torson pont e 2 s mappe onto λ / F q 1 = F q. So Snce λ q λ, we obtan ψ Tλ = λ q2 +λ q +λ = 0. = λ q λ q 1. 3 Hence we see that every Drnfel moule ϕ together wth an orere bass e 1,e 2 for the T-torson s somorphc to a Drnfel moule ψ of the form ψ T = λ q λ q 1τ2 λ q λ + τ + 4 q 1 3
The bass e 1,e 2 s mappe uner ths somorphsm onto 1,λ. Hence we can see λ as a unformzer for the moular curve XT. The j-nvarant of the Drnfel moule 4 s gven by q+1 + jλ = = q 1+λ q λ q 1 q+1. λ q λ q2 q Ths gves the relaton between λ an the functon j on X1. We obtan a surjectve map L\F q L λ jλ, whch s q 3 q-to-one, except above j = 0. Next we want to efne the analog of the Deurng polynomal. We are lookng for a polynomal H pt s such that the Drnfel moule ψ λ wth ψ λ T = λ q λ q 1τ2 λ q λ + τ + = q 1 λ q λ q 1τ τ 1 s supersngular f an only f H pt λ = 0. Snce L has A-characterstc pt, the kernel of the multplcaton by pt map, ψ λ [pt], s a free F q[t]/ pt -moule of rank 0 or 1. It has rank 0 an ψ λ s supersngular exactly when the coeffcent of τ n ψ λ pt s zero, where = egpt. Snce an λ are relate by a smple relaton 3, we start by etermnng supersngular Drnfel moules of the form 2. For ψ T = τ 2 +τ+ = τ τ 1 let ψ pt = 2 k=0 g k τ k. 5 A rect bookkeepng argument for the egree of n the coeffcent of τ n 5 shows that g has leang term 1 q 1/q 1. Therefore h pt := 1 g s a monc polynomal of egree q 1/q 1 n. Furthermore, we have g k = 0 for 0 k < an g 2 = 1+q2 +q 4 + +q By an mmeate aaptaton of calculatons n [8], we obtan the followng results for h pt : Conserng the coeffcent of τ k n ψ pt ψ T = ψ Tψ pt we obtan the recurrence γt qk T g k = g k 1 qk 1 g k 2 qk 2 + g q2 k 2 gq k 1 g q k 1 +g k 1γT qk 1 = g k 1 Ω qk 1 g q k 1 Ω g k 2 qk 2 g q2 k 2 7 wth Ω = +. It follows that h pt g k for k < 2. Hence roots of h pt are roots of g k for 0 k < 2. Therefore, the Drnfel moule n 2 s supersngular f an only f s a root of h pt. As n [8] one can show that h pt s separable, by conserng equaton 7 for k = 2+1. By 3, the monc polynomal λ q λ q 1 H pt λ := γt q q 1 q 1 h pt λ q λ q 1 wll be the analog of the Deurng Polynomal n A-characterstc pt. It s easly seen to be separable an ts roots correspon to supersngular Drnfel moules n Legenre form 4 n A-characterstc pt. 3 Equatons for the Drnfel moular curves X 0 T n In ths secton we fn explct equatons for the curves X 0T n over F q[t,1/t] for any n 1. Equatons for the reuctons of these curves moulo T 1.e., = 1 have been obtane by Elkes n [7]. The equatons erve n ths secton hol for any A-characterstc wth
Denote by F the fel F q. Let F n be the functon fel of X 0T n over F. We know that j 1 = j s a unformzer of X1 an hence F 0 = Fj 1. Moreover 0 = s a unformzer for X 0T: gven a Drnfel moule ϕ together wth T-sogeny ι, we can fn an somorphc Drnfel moule ψ of the form 2, such that the somorphsm maps the kernel of ι onto F q. So the par ϕ,ι wll correspon to the par ψ,κ, wth κ = τ 1. Hence F 1 = F 0, wth 0 + q+1 j 1 =. 0 We have the sogeny κ : ψ ψ. The sogenous Drnfel moule ψ wll be gven by an wll have j nvarant ψ T = τ 1 0τ = q 0 τ2 0 +γt 2 τ + 0 +γt q q+1 j 2 =. 9 We have F 1 = F 0 = Fj 1,j 2. Ths escrpton for X 0T can also be foun n [12]. By teraton, equatons for F n can be foun. Let ι be a T-sogeny from ψ. The par ψ,ι wll correspon to 1 wth 1 + q+1 j 2 = From Equaton 9 an 10 we obtan q 0 0 +γt q q+1 q 0 = 1 +q We have the factorzaton 0 +γt q q+1 1 +q+1 q 0 = 1 0 γtq+1 1+ γtq2 1 q 0 q 1 1 γtq The lnear factor correspons to the case where ι s the ual sogeny of κ. If ths s not the case, ther composton wll gve a T 2 -sogeny of ψ. Hence the functon fel of X 0T 2 s gven by F 2 = F 0, 1, wth 2 q 1 1+ γtq q 1 γtq = Snce the genus of X 0T 2 s zero, our frst task s to fn a generator of ts functon fel. The element Θ 0 = 0 1 γt q+1 / 0 +γt q s a generator of the functon fel F 2, an we fn 0 = Θ q 1 0 Θ 0 + an 1 = Θ0 +q Θ q 1. 0 Itwll beconvenenttouseaslghtlyfferentgenerator, namelyy 0 = Θ 0+/. In terms of Y 0, we fn Y q 0 0 = γt q Y 0 +1 q 1 Y 0 an 1 = Y 0 +1 q The functon fel F n+2, n 0 can be generate by elements Y 0,...,Y n satsfyng the equatons Y q 1 γt q Y +1 q 1 Y = 1 n Y 1 +1 q 1 5
whch smplfes to the equatons Y +1 q 1 Y = In fact we have shown the followng: Y q 1 γt q 1 Y 1 +1 q 1 1 n. 13 Theorem 2 Let F = F q. Denote for n 0 by F n the functon fel of the Drnfel moular curve X 0T n over F. Then the tower of functon fels F = F n n 0 can be gven recursvely as follows: F 0 = Fj, F 1 = F, wth F 2 = FY 0 wth an for n 3. q+1 + j =. = γt q Y 0 +1 q 1 Y 0 F n = F n 1Y n, wth Y n +1 q 1 Y n = Y q n 1 γt q 1 Y n 1 +1 q 1 4 A Recurrence for the Deurng Polynomal for Drnfel moules n Legenre Form From now on, we assume that the A-characterstc s fnte,.e. ker γ = pt, wth egpt =. Let L be an algebrac closure of F = A/ pt. Equaton 12 gves rse to the corresponence L 0 LY 0 L 1 : LX 0T 2 = LY LX 0T = L 0 LX 0T = L 1 0 = γt q Y 0 +1 q 1 Y 0 1 an 14 Y q 0 = Y 0 +1 q 1. Defne the fel somorphsm ι : L 0 L 1 by ι 1 = 0. Ths map together wth the corresponence L 0 LY 0 L 1, gves rse to a recte graph G = V,E. The vertex-set V s gven by the set of places of L 0, whle P,Q E f an only f there exsts a place R of LY 0 such that R L 0 = P an R L 1 = ιq. See [2] for etals. Note that a vertex P correspons to an somorphsm class of Drnfel moules together wth a T-sogeny the level structure an that an ege P,Q correspons to a T-sogeny between the corresponng Drnfel moules preservng the level structure. Note that snce the A-characterstc s fnte, we can conser the set of places V s V of L 0 corresponng to the supersngular ponts on X 0T. From [8, Thm.5.9] one obtans mmeately that V s = q 1/q 1. Note that h pt s = P V s s 0P. 15 If two Drnfel moules φ an ψ are sogenous, then φ s supersngular f an only f ψ s supersngular. Ths means that f P,Q s an ege of G, then P V s f an only f 6
Q V s. Moreover, snce n the extenson LY 0/L 0 only the zero an pole of 0 are ramfe an these correspon to cusps j =, any P V s wll be ajacent to exactly [LY 0 : L 0] = q vertces, all n V s. Hence we obtan the followng: Theorem 3 The set V s V corresponng to the supersngular ponts of X 0T gves rse to a q-regular component of G of sze q 1/q 1. The graph on the V s s closely relate to the T-sogeny Brant graph on the set of supersngular j-nvarants. Next we wll efne unversal polynomals u s wth coeffcents n A by a smple recurson. We wll show that for any polynomal pt T, the Deurng polynomal h pt s n A-characterstc pt s obtane by reucng u s moulo pt, where = egpt. The ea s to show, usng nce enttes satsfe by these polynomals u s, that the roots of the reucton of u s moulo pt, also gve rse to a q-regular component of the graph G above. By a theorem from [2], the graph G can have at most one such component an hence we obtan that h pt s an the reucton of u s moulo pt agree. Defnton 4 For 1 we efne the polynomals u s A[s] recursvely by: u 1s = 0, u 0s = 1 an u +1s = s+t q q u s T q Ts q u 1s, for For any rreucble polynomal pt T we enote by κ pt the resue fel of pt an by κ pt ts algebrac closure. Reucng u s moulo pt, gves rse to a polynomal wth coeffcents n κ pt. We wll enote ths polynomal by u pt s. It s easy to verfy that u pt s s monc an has egree q 1/q 1. Proposton 5 Let 1 be an nteger an pt F q[t] be a prme fferent from T of egree. All roots of the polynomal u pt s are smple. Moreover, 0 s not a root of u pt s. Proof. It s easly seen by nucton that u 0 = T qq 1/q 1 for 0. Therefore 0 s not a root of u pt s. We enote by u s the ervatve of u s wth respect to s. By takng the ervatve on both ses of the equalty sgn n Equaton 16, we see that the sequences u := u 0s,u 1s,u 2s,... an u = u 0s,u 1s,u 2s,... both satsfy recurson 16. The same hols for any lnear combnaton λu +µu. For convenence, we wrte α = T + pt n κ pt. Now suppose that ρ κ pt s a root of u pt s of multplcty greater than one. Then ρ s a common root of u pt s an s. Hence we can choose λ an µ, not both zero, such that u pt λ u pt 1 ρ+µu pt 1 ρ = 0 an λ u pt u pt ρ+µu pt ρ = 0. Note that α q 1 for 0 <, snce α s a root of the rreucble polynomal pt of ρ+µu pt egree. Hence, usng equaton 16, we see that λ ρ = 0 for any 0. In partcular 0 = λ u pt 0 ρ+µu pt 0 ρ = µ an 0 = λ u pt 1 Hence λ = µ = 0, gvng a contracton. The followng proposton contans a crucal entty. ρ+µu pt 1 ρ = λ+µρ+α q. 7
Proposton 6 Let 0 be an nteger. Then u T q ss+1 q 1 Ts+1 q 1 u T s q s+1 q 1 = T q TTs+1 q 1 u 1 T s+1 q 1 Proof. We prove the proposton by nucton on. The proof only uses elementary computatons whch are somewhat teous an therefore omtte. Frst of all note that for = 0 an = 1, the proposton s trval. Now suppose that 1 an that the proposton s true for an 1. Then wrtng D 0 = T q ss+1 q 1 an D 1 = Ts q /s+1 q 1 we have by equaton 16 u +1D 0 = T q ss+1 q 1 +T q q u D 0 T q T T q ss+1 q 1 q u 1D 0 Usng the nucton hypothess, we can express ths n the form u +1D 0 = f u D 1+f 1u 1D 1+f 2u 2D 1, 17 for certan expressons f,f 1,f 2 A[s]. Now usng equaton 16, wth the varable s replace by D 1 = Ts q /s + 1 q 1, we can express u 2D 1 an u 1D 1 n terms of u D 1 an u +1D 1 n equaton 17. The resultng expresson turns out to be exactly what we neee to complete the nucton step. Theorem 7 For an rreucble polynomal pt A wth egpt = an pt T, the Deurng polynomal h pt can be obtane as h pt s = u pt s. Proof. Conser the corresponence 14 an the assocate graph G. By Theorem 3, the set V S of places corresponng to supersngular ponts on X 0T form a q-regular fnte component of G. Let W s be the set of places of L 0 corresponng to the roots u pt 0. We clam that set W S also forms a q-regular fnte component of G. Fnteness s clear. Let P W s an ξ = 0P be the corresponng root of u pt 0. Let P,Q be an ege n G an η = 0Q. Then there exsts an a n L wth ξ = γt q a+1 q 1 a an η = a+1 a q s q. q Reucng moulo pt the entty n Proposton 6 for =, an usng that pt T q T, we obtan u pt γt q ss+1 q 1 s+1 q 1 u pt s q = 0. s+1 q 1 Substtutng s = a an usng 18 we get u pt ξ = u pt γt q aa+1 q 1 = a+1 q 1 u pt a q a+1 q 1 = a+1 q 1 u pt η. Snce a 1 otherwse ξ = 0, contractng Proposton 5, we have u pt η = 0, hence Q s n W s. Smlarly, P,Q s an ege n G an Q W s mples P W s. To see the q-regularty of W s just note that the places n W s are not ramfe n the extensons of the corresponence. Fnally, V s = W s, by [2, Corollary 4.7], snce the graph G can have at most one q-regular fnte component. Both h pt s an u pt s are monc, hence the result follows. 8
Remark 8 Note that the proof of Theorem 7also shows thatthe subgraph on supersngular ponts V s s connecte. Usng 8, the Deurng Polynomal H pt s wll be gven by s q s q 1 H pt s := γt q q 1 q 1 u pt. s q s q 1 Alternatvely, by a change of varables, we can obtan recurrence relatons for H pt s rectly : Corollary 9 Defne U 1s = 0, U 0s = 1 an for 0 U +1s = s q s q q Us Tq T s q s q 1q 1 U 1s. T q 1 T q+1 Let pt T be an rreucble polynomal n A wth egpt =. Then H pt s = U pt s, where U pt s enotes the reucton of U s moulo pt. References [1] A. Bassa, P.
