Outline 1 Introduction/Summary 2 Superforms-Ectoplasms and actions 3 Conformal SUGRA actions 4 Conclusion

Introduction: AIM Construct the off-shell action for N -extended conformal supergravity in three space-time dimensions (3D)

Introduction: old results in 3D conformal SUGRA in a series of papers between 1985 and 1993 the on-shell 3D N -extended conformal supergravity actions were constructed: N = 1:[van Nieuwenhuizen (1985)]; N = 2:[Roček, van Nieuwenhuizen (1986)]; general-n : [Lindström, Roček (1989)] & [Nishino, Gates (1993)]. N = 1, 2 actions are off-shell superconformal (no auxiliary fields); while on-shell for N > 3

Introduction: old results in 3D conformal SUGRA, action The on-shell action for general N is a Chern-Simons (CS) type action with Higher Derivatives in gravitini S CS = 1 ( d 3 x e ε abc ω fg a R bc fg ω af g ω h f bg ω ch 2R ab IJ V c IJ 4 3 V a IJ V bi K V c KJ i 2 Ψ bc α I (γ d ) α β (γ a ) β γ ε def Ψ ef I γ ) ω a bc, R ab cd Lorentz connection and curvature, V a IJ, R ab IJ SO(N ) R-symmetry connection and curvature, Ψ bc α I gravitini field strength. Action was constructed in components as a CS action for the N -extended superconformal algebra osp(n 4, R) How to extend the action off-shell?

Motivations: Why off-shell 3D conformal SUGRA? An off-shell approach to conformal SUGRA, when available, can be used to generate general supergravity matter couplings: - superconformal tensor calculus; - superspace approaches. Example of recent applications in 3D have seen: 3D massive gravity and AdS 3 /CFT 2. Topological-Massive-Gravity (TMG) [Li-Song-Strominger ( 08)]; New-Massive-Gravity (NMG), Generalized-Massive-Gravity (GMG) [Bergshoeff-Hohm-Townsend ( 09)] Supersymmetric extensions of NMG & GMG: N = 1 non-linear case [Andringa-Bergshoeff-deRoo-Hohm-Sezgin-Townsend ( 09)], [Bergshoeff-Hohm-Rosseel-Sezgin-Townsend ( 10)] N 2 understood at the linearized level [Bergshoeff-Hohm-Rosseel-Townsend ( 10)] Fully non-linear SUSY difficult due to higher-derivative terms TMG, GMG includes conformal SUGRA action as building block

Motivations: Why off-shell 3D conformal SUGRA? recent renewed interest in constructing off-shell SUSY theories on constant curvatures backgrounds in 4D and 3D. This opened a classification problem for SUSY backgrounds of off-shell sugra see Komargodski s and Tomasiello s talk for list of references localization techniques for computing Wilson loop, partition functions, indices... see Gomis s talk for list of references Localization needs off-shell SUSY in 3D, off-shell curved (Lorentz)-Chern-Simons (conformal sugra actions) have a role in explaining features like contact terms, complexity and F-maximization of the partition function of N = 2 theories [Closset-Dumitrescu-Festuccia-Komargodski-Seiberg ( 12)]

Motivations: off-shell 3D superspace SUGRA program Superspace formulations for 3D N -extended SUGRA help. Surprisingly this was not fully developed in the past N = 1: [Howe-Tucker (1977)];[Brown-Gates (1979)] N 2 sketched [Howe-Izquierdo-Papadopoulos-Townsend (1995)] more for N = 8 [Howe-Sezgin ( 04)] SO(N ) supergeometry for off-shell Weyl multiplet of conformal SUGRA for any N in [Kuzenko-Lindström-GTM ( 11)] and general supergravity-matter systems with N 4 independently: N = 8: [Cederwall-Gran-Nilsson ( 11)]: N = 16: [Greitz-Howe ( 11)]

Motivations: off-shell 3D superspace SUGRA program A missing element in the program was indeed to build the action for N -extended conformal sugra using superspace (known only for N = 1 [Gates-Grisaru-Roček-Siegel (1981)]; [Zupnik-Pak (1988)]) = How to build it for general N?

Motivations: How conformal SUGRA action for general N? A way is to use superform/ectoplasm techniques to engineer invariant actions from closed super 3-forms. Idea similar to action for linear multiplet in 4D N = 2 supergravity [Butter-Kuzenko-Novak ( 12)] Ectoplasm in physics has been rediscovered various time: [Hasler (1996)]; [Gates-Grisaru-Knutt Wehlau-Siegel (1997)]; see also reheonomy approach (book [Castellani-D Auria-Fre (1991)]); then systematically developed and used to classify counterterms [Boussard-Howe-Stelle-... ( 09) ( 13)] Successful way: [Butter-Kuzenko-Novak-GTM ( 13)] manifestly gauge entire osp(n 4, R) in superspace = 3D conformal superspace (turns out to simplify calculations) ectoplasm for N = 1,, 5 [ ]; then N = 6 [ ] N = 3, 4, 5, 6 actions were never constructed before (note [Nishimura-Tanii]: N = 6, with tensor calculus, just one week before)

3D conformal supergravity in conformal superspace Supergeometry based on a manifest gauging of the entire superconformal group OSp(N 4, R) 3D generalization of the pioneering works by [Butter ( 09),( 11)] for N = 1, 2 conformal supergravity interpreted as Superspace analogue of superconformal tensor calculus

3D conformal supergravity in conformal superspace Take an N -extended curved superspace z M = (x m, θ µ I ), m = 0, 1, 2, µ = 1, 2, I = 1,, N Structure group X is chosen to be: SL(2, R) SO(N ) (Dilatations) (S susy) (K boosts). The superspace covariant derivatives A = E A M M ω A b X b = E A M M 1 2 Ω A ab M ab 1 2 Φ A PQ N PQ B A D F A B K B - E A M (z) supervielbein, M = / z M, - Ω A cd (z) Lorentz connection, - Φ A (z) SO(N )-connection, - B A dilatation D-connection - F AB special superconformal connection, K A = (K a, S I α) - A gauge super-poincaré via superdiffeomorphism, P A = (P a, Q I α). The sugra local gauge transformations OSp(N 4, R) K := ξ A A Λbc M bc ΛKL N KL + σd + Λ A K A, δ K A = [K, A ]

3D conformal supergravity in conformal superspace Can prove that the algebra: [ A, B } = T AB C C 1 2 R(M) AB cd M cd 1 2 R(N) AB PQ N PQ can be constrained to be for N > 3 R(D) AB D R(S) AB γ K SK γ R(K) AB c K c { I α, J β } = 2iδIJ αβ + iε αβ W IJKL N KL i ε αβ ( γ N 3 K W IJKL )S γl 1 + ε αβ (γ c ) γδ ( γk δl W IJKL )Kc, 2(N 2)(N 3) [ a, J β ] = 1 (γa) βγ ( γ 2(N 3) K W JPQK 1 )N PQ (γa) βγ ( γ 2(N 2)(N 3) L δ P W JKLP )S δk i (γa) βγ (γ c ) δρ ( γ 4(N 1)(N 2)(N 3) K δ L ρ P W JKLP )Kc, 1 [ a, b ] = ε abc (γ c ) αβ (i( α I β 4(N 2)(N 3) J W PQIJ i )N PQ + ( α I β N 1 J γ K W LIJK )S γl 1 + (γ d ) γδ ( α I 2N (N 1) β J γ K δ L W IJKL )K d ), Algebra parametrized only in terms of one single superfield: W IJKL = W [IJKL] : the super-cotton tensor describing 3D N -extended Weyl multiplet

3D conformal supergravity in conformal superspace W IJKL is a dimension-1 primary S P αw IJKL = 0, DW IJKL = W IJKL and satisfies one simple Bianchi identity (for N > 4) I αw JKLP = [I αw JKLP] 4 N 3 αqw Q[JKL δ P]I

Ectoplasms: generalities closed super p-form J = E A p E A 1JA1...A p, (E A = dz M E M A ) 0 = (dj) A1 A p A p+1 = 1 p! [A 1 J A2 A p+1 ) 1 2((p 1)!) T [A 1 A 2 B J B A3 A p+1 ) if p = d, dimension of the bosonic body of the superspace, then S = J = d d x J θ=0, J = 1 M d! εm1 m d Jm1 m d d S invariant under superdiffeomorphism ξ = ξ A E A = ξ M M, δ ξ J = L ξ J i ξ dj + di ξ J = di ξ J. By moving to flat indices the action is equivalently written as S = d d x 1 d! εm1 m d Ad A E md E 1 m1 J A1 A d θ=0, [ S = d d x e ε a1 a d α J a1 a d + c 2Ψ 1 α a1 J α1 a 2 a d + c 3Ψ 1 α a1 Ψ 2 a2 J α1 α 2 a 3 a d + + c d Ψ a1 α1 Ψ ad α d J α1 α d ] θ=0,

Ectoplasms: generalities To have an action invariant under the full supergravity gauge group one needs also invariance under the tangent space structure group X we need closed forms such that δ X J = dy (X ), for some (d 1) form Y (X ) the ectoplasm action S is invariant under X -transformations and then full local supergravity gauge transformation K

Conformal SUGRA actions: N -extended CS term From idea of the component in 80s, the first natural object to start with is the Chern-Simon 3-form for OSp(N 4, R) denote the osp(n 4, R) generators collectively by Xã, fã b c are the structure constants Cartan-Killing metric: [Xã, X b } = f c ã b X c, fã b c = ( 1) ε ãε b f bã c. Γã b = fã d c f b c d ( 1) ε c, Γã b = ( 1) ε ãε b Γ bã With Cartan-Killing construct a gauge invariant closed four-form: R 2 := R b RãΓã b, d R 2 = 0. Chern-Simons three-form for osp(n 4, R) Σ CS = R b ωãγã b ω c ω b ωãfã b c, dσ CS = R 2. not closed

Conformal SUGRA actions: N -extended CS term and Σ R Philosophy is then to search for a curvature induced 3-form Σ R dσ R = R 2 constructed only out of the covariant fields of conformal superspace If Σ R exists, then we have found a closed 3-form J J = Σ CS Σ R, dj = 0 that gives the action of N -extended conformal supergravity. Note: for N = 1, 2 R 2 = 0 = J = Σ CS the CS form is closed and generate the conformal SUGRA action No surprizes: N = 1, 2 are generated by CS action for conformal group as [van Nieuwenhuizen (1985)]; [Roček, van Nieuwenhuizen (1986)]

N -extended curvature induced form want Σ R only constructed in terms of W IJKL the only possible ansatz for the lowest components of Σ R is Σ I α J β K γ = 0, Σ a J β K γ = i (γ a) βγ (A δ JK W ILPQ W ILPQ + B W LPQJ W LPQ K ), Plug in dσ R =< R 2 > at lowest mass dimension you get ( 0 = EL δ E γ K E β J E I α ε αβ ε γδ W PQIJ W KL PQ + A W PQRS W PQRS δ J[K δ L]I +B W PQRJ W PQR [K δ L]I ) first term contains a double traceless contribution of the form ( δ[k R δ[i S 1 )( N δr S δ[i δ T δ J] [K L] U 1 ) N δj] L] δt U W SUPQ W RTPQ which cannot be cancelled by the Ansatz for N > 5... but N = 3, 4, 5 work easily

Why for N > 5 didn t work? example N = 6 There is a very simple physical explanation: we are not considering all the relevant degrees of freedom in our construction the N = 6 Weyl multiplet possesses the component field X α1α 2 I 1 I 6 = X α1α 2 ε I1 I6 (for a U(1) potential A a) α1α2 X α1α 2 = 0, X αβ = (γ a ) αβ ε abc b A c N = 6 Weyl multiplet has extra U(1) besides osp(n 4, R) U(1) super 2-form F = da out of W IJ := (1/4!)ε IJKLPQ W KLPQ Modify CS-form as Σ CS = R b ωãγã b ω c ω b ωãfã b c af A dσ CS = R 2 af F N -extended Ansatz for Σ R now works: Σ R = J, dj = 0 exists! use ectoplasms and reduce to components: component action for N = 6 conformal supergravity (same as Nishimura-Tanii)

N = 6 conformal SUGRA action The off-shell N = 6 action in components is S = 1 { d 3 x e ε abc( ω fg a R bc fg ω af g ω h bg ω f ch i 2 Ψ bc α I (γ d ) β α (γ a) γ β ε def I Ψ ef γ 2R IJ ab V c IJ 4 3 VaIJ V K ) bi V c KJ + 4F ab A c 4y IJ w IJ 16i 3 w αijk w αijk + 8iX γ K X γ K 8 3 εijklpq w IJ w KL w PQ α 8iψ ai (γ a ) β α ( w IJK β w JK + X βj w IJ ) + 4iε abc (γ a) αβ ψ b α I ψ c β J (w IK w J K 1 4 δij w KL w KL ) where the components are: w IJ := 1 4! εijklpq W KLPQ, w α IJK := i 2 [I αw JK], y IJ := i 5 γ[i γp W J]P 1 2 εijklpq W KL W PQ, X α I := i 5 αjw IJ action for N = 3, 4, 5 computed analogously or by truncation of the N = 6 action }

Conclusion We constructed N = 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 conformal SUGRA action in 3D construction based on a new formulation of N -extended conformal SUGRA in conformal superspace and Ectoplasms Some open problems: Construction of non-linear N = 3, 4, 5, 6 TMG. extention to GMG What about N > 6?
