Key words: algebras of generalized functions, duality theory, generalization of the Dirac measure AMS 2000 subject classification: 46F30, 13J99 0 Introduction This paper is the second part of an investigation into the topological aspects of Colombeau algebras and duality theory started in [5]. While [5] develops the theory of locally convex topological C-modules G and topological duals L(G, C) in full generality, here we focus on some specific examples: the well-known Colombeau algebras G c (), G(), G S ( ) [2, 3, 4, 7, 9, 13, 14] and the corresponding duals L(G c (), C), L(G(), C), L(G S ( ), C). We recall that a locally convex topological C-module is a C-module G endowed with a topology τ which respects the C-module structure and has a base of convex neighborhoods of the origin. Here the convexity has to be interpreted as a C-convexity as introduced in [5, Definition 1.1]. In analogy to locally convex topological vector spaces τ may be determined by a family of suitable C-seminorms called ultrapseudo-seminorms whose definition and properties are collected in [5, Definition 1.8, Theorem 1.10]. These basic notions of topology allow to deal with continuity of C-linear maps and to define the topological dual of G as the space L(G, C) of all C-linear and continuous functionals T : G C. 3 Many results of this paper are obtained as applications of theorems and propositions in [5] while others, more related to Colombeau theory s issues as characterizations of ideals and estimates of representatives, are provided independently. We now describe the contents of the sections in more detail. Inspired by distribution theory, Section 1 discusses some examples of continuous and C-linear functionals as elements of the topological duals of G c (), G() and G S ( ). Among them particular attention is given to the direct embedding of classical distributions into L(G c (), C) via the map D () L(G c (), C) : w (u [(w(u ε )) ε ]) and to a generalization of the classical Dirac measure, the generalized delta functional δ x, whose construction is based on the theory of point values for Colombeau functions [9, 15]. Since L(G c (), C) is a sheaf we can talk about the support of a map in L(G c (), C) and we manage to characterize the elements of L(G(), C) as the maps in L(G c (), C) having compact support. Under this point of view the analogies between L(G(), C), L(G c (), C) and E (), D () respectively are evident. However, relevant differences between the distributional framework and the dual-colombeau framework studied here still exist. This fact is pointed out by the computation of the support of δ x and by some remarks on the functionals in L(G c (), C) with support {0}. Section 2 is devoted to the properties of the generalized delta functional δ x. The main theorem concerns the restriction of δ x to regular generalized functions, the elements of the algebras Gc (), G (), G S (Rn ) as defined in [4, 7, 14]). It yields that when x is a generalized point with compact support (that is, x c in the notation of [9]), δ x restricted to G () is an integral operator of the form v(y) dy, where v belongs to G c(). It follows that every u in G () can be locally represented by the integral v(x, y)u(y) dy where v is a suitable generalized function on. Moreover, an adaptation of these results, involving x, u Gc () and x, u G S (Rn ), is given and examples show that what we obtained cannot be extended to generalized functions which are not regular. The concluding Section 3 deals with the continuous embedding of Colombeau algebras into their topological duals. In detail, the chains of inclusions and G () G() L(G c (), C) G c () G c () L(G(), C) hold on any open subset of while algebras of generalized functions satisfying global estimates on as G S (Rn ), G S ( ) and G τ ( ) [9] are naturally contained in L(G S ( ), C) in the following way: G S (Rn ) G S ( ) G τ ( ) L(G S ( ), C). Concerning the proof of this last statement, the Colombeau algebra G p,p ( ) [1] and a useful characterization of the ideals N S ( ) of G S ( ) and N p,p ( ) of G p,p ( ) by estimates involving the 0-th derivatives are needed. In addition to such topics we discuss some density issues and we compare the straightforward 2

4 embedding of classical distributions into L(G c (), C) mentioned in Section 1 with the Colombeau-embedding D () G() L(G c (), C). Finally the classical regularization of the Dirac measure via convolution with a mollifier gives the basic idea for a regularization of δ x L(G S ( ), C) via generalized functions in G S ( ). The results obtained in this paper and in particular the chains of inclusions of Colombeau algebras and their duals set up a systematic framework where the regularity theory for pseudodifferential operators with generalized symbols [4, 8, 7, 10, 11] can be settled and developed. The dual L(G c ( ), C) was already used in [7] for defining the kernel of a pseudodifferential operator acting on generalized functions. The dual approach involving G S (Rn ), G S ( ), G τ ( ) and L(G S ( ), C) to pseudodifferential operators with global generalized symbols has been considered in [6, Chapter 5] for the first time, leading to results of G -regularity which improve the ones obtained in [4]. S 1 Topological duals of the Colombeau algebras G c (), G() and G S ( ): basic properties and examples In this section we deal with the topological duals of the well-known Colombeau algebras G c (), G(), G S ( ), presenting some basic properties and relevant examples. Our theoretical background consists of the results on locally convex topological C-modules and duality theory presented in the first paper on topological structures in Colombeau algebras [5]. We also refer to [5] for all the notations used in the following. We recall that for the topologies introduced in [5, Examples 3.6, 3.7] G() and G S ( ) are Fréchet C-modules while G c () is the strict inductive limit of a sequence of Fréchet C-modules. Hence by Propositions 2.9 and 2.10 in [5] we know that G c (), G() and G S ( ) are bornological locally convex topological C-modules and that the spaces L(G c (), C), L(G(), C) and L(G S ( ), C) are complete, when endowed with the strong topology β or the topology β b of uniform convergence on bounded subsets. Note that by [5, Propositions 2.14, 2.15] G c (), G() and G S ( ) are also barrelled. Consequently their topological duals equipped with the weak topology σ are quasi-complete. Our investigation into the duals of G c (), G() and G S ( ) begins with some structural issues. It is clear that if then G c ( ) is continuously embedded into G c (). This means that every map T L(G c (), C) can be restricted to letting (1.1) T : G c ( ) C : u T u, and that T belongs to L(G c ( ), C). We are ready now to state the following theorem whose proof is easily obtained by adapting the corresponding result concerning D () to the Colombeau context as in Theorem [9]. Note that 3

5 Theorem 1.1 also follows from abstract arguments in sheaf theory, see e.g. [12, (2.2.4)]. Theorem 1.1. L(G c (), C) is a sheaf. It follows that the support of T L(G c (), C) (denoted by supp T ) can be defined as the complement of the largest open set in in which T is 0 and that x \ supp T if and only if there exists an open neighborhood V of x such that T V = 0 in L(G c (V ), C). In analogy with distribution theory we use the notion of support in order to compare L(G c (), C) and L(G(), C). First of all every T L(G(), C) restricted to G c () is an element of L(G c (), C) since the inclusion map ι : G c () G() is continuous. Note that Im(ι) is dense in G(). In fact for every u 0 G(), every seminorm p K,m (f) = sup x K, α m α f(x) on E() and every neighborhood U := {u G() : P K,m (u u 0 ) η} of u 0 in G(), where P K,m is the corresponding ultra-pseudo-seminorm [5], we can always find some u G c () contained in U. It suffices to take χ Cc () identically 1 in a neighborhood of K and observing that χu 0 G c () with P K,m (χu 0 u 0 ) = 0. As a consequence the map (1.2) L(G(), C) L(G c (), C) : T T Gc() is injective. Theorem 1.2. A map T L(G c (), C) belongs to L(G(), C) if and only if supp T is a compact subset of. Proof. Let supp T be a compact subset of and let χ Cc () identically 1 in a neighborhood of supp T. For all u G() we have that χu G c () and T : G() C : u T (χu) is a C-linear map on G(). Moreover, the restriction of T to G c () coincides with T since (1 χ)u G c (\supp T ) and T (u) T (u) = T ((1 χ)u) = 0. This contradicts the continuity of T on G(). From Theorem 1.2 it follows that the restriction map in (1.2) is a bijection between L(G(), C) and the space of all functionals in L(G c (), C) with compact support. Distribution theory and point value theory for generalized functions are the main tools in providing the following examples of C-linear and continuous functionals on G c (), G() and G S ( ). The natural embeddings of Colombeau algebras into their topological duals are postponed to Section 3. Example 1.3. Classical distributions Every distribution w D () provides an element of L(G c (), C). In fact recalling that the injection ι D : G c () G D() : u (u ε ) ε + N D() introduced in [5, Remark 3.8] is continuous for the strict inductive limit topology on G c () and the sharp topology on G D(), we have by [5, (ii)remark 3.14] that w ι D : G c () C : w [(w(u ε )) ε ], where (u ε ) ε is any representative of u in some M DK (), is C-linear and continuous. In the same way we get an element of L(G(), C) and an element of L(G S ( ), C) if w belongs to E () and S ( ) respectively. In the following examples we make use of the main definitions and results of generalized point value theory. The reader should refer to [9, Subsection 1.2.4] for the needed notations and explanations. Example 1.4. The generalized delta functional δ x Let x be a generalized point in c. We can define a C-linear map δ x : G() C associating with each u G() its point value u( x) at x. It is clear that δ x belongs to L(G(), C) since δ x (u) e e v(sup x K uε(x) ) where (x ε ) ε is a representative of x contained in a compact set K for ε small enough. Since every u G c () is a generalized function in some G DK () it is meaningful to define the point value u( x) even when x is in \ c. Indeed for (u ε ) ε M DK () and (x ε ) ε M the estimate u ε (x ε ) sup y u ε (y) tells us that u( x) := [(u ε (x ε )) ε ] is well-defined for every choice of representative of u of this type. 7 We conclude this section with some further considerations and examples involving the generalized delta functional. They will point out some differences between the distributional delta and the generalized delta concerning topics such as support and representation of continuous functionals. Some interesting phenomena occur when we compute the support of δ x L(G c (), C). Example 1.5. The support of δ x Let x = [(x ε ) ε ]. Finally let (x n ) n be a sequence in R + with N as set of accumulation points and x n n + 1 for all n N. Remark 1.6. Another difference to distribution theory consists in the existence of elements of L(G(), C) having support {0} which are not C-linear combinations of δ 0 and its derivatives. We recall that Corollary 2.18 in [5] valid for barrelled locally convex topological C-modules, says in particular that when we have a sequence (T n ) n in L(G S ( ), C) with (T n (u)) n convergent to some T (u) in C for all u, then the limit T belongs to L(G S ( ), C). Analogously, the same holds for sequences in L(G c (), C) and L(G(), C). We can use this convergence result for constructing the following example of a series of generalized delta functionals. Note that when x the point value u( x) := [(u ε (x ε )) ε ] of u G S ( ) is a well-defined element of C and the delta functional δ x : u u( x) is a map in L(G S ( ), C). Example 1.7. Consider the sequence of generalized points x n := [(ε n ) ε ] in R. We know that δ xn L(G S (R), C) and the series n=0 u( x n) is convergent in C. 9 2 Integral representation of δ x over regular Colombeau functions In the previous section we presented the generalized delta functional δ x as a typical example of a C-linear map in L(G c (), C). We continue to investigate the properties of δ x by considering the action on regular Colombeau generalized functions. Since we will work with integral operators we recall that a generalized function u G() can be integrated over a compact set K of defining u(y) dy as the complex generalized number with representative K ( K u ε(y) dy) ε. When u G c () we set u(y) dy := u(y) dy where K is any K compact set containing supp u in its interior. We are now ready to prove the following theorem. Theorem 2.1. 10 Remark 2.2. In this remark we collect some comments concerning the generalized function v constructed in the previous theorem. (i) The definition of v is independent of the choice of the cut-off function ψ. Let ψ 1 and ψ 2 be two different cut-off functions identically 1 in a neighborhood of K and assume that x ε K for all ε (0, η]. We know that there exists ε 0 > 0 such that if x ε y ε 0 then ψ 1 (y) ψ 2 (y) = 0. Since the topology with which we endow Gc () is finer than the topology induced by G c () on Gc () we know that the restriction T of a map T L(G G c () c(), C) is an element of L(Gc (), C). In the particular case of the generalized delta functional δ x, Theorem 2.1 and Remark 2.2 tell us that this restriction is an integral operator of the form v x(y) dy. This operator is an element of L(Gc (), C) when x and an element of L(G (), C) when x c. Theorem 2.1 leads to a local integral representation for regular Colombeau generalized functions as an interesting consequence. Theorem 2.3. The main idea of this proof is to consider v x where x and to observe that the map x v x defines a generalized function in G( ) fulfilling (2.13). We conclude this section with global versions of Theorems 2.1 and 2.3 which involve a suitable subalgebra of regular and tempered generalized functions. Our interest for such a matter is motivated by the relevant role that algebras of generalized functions globally defined on and the corresponding duals play in some recent papers on generalized pseudodifferential operators and regularity theory [4, 6]. We model our considerations on the classical results concerning 12

For the sake of simplicity and to the advantage of the reader we organize our reasoning in three subsections. 3.1 Embeddings in the local context: G() L(G c (), C) and G c () L(G(), C) In this subsection by the expression local context we mean to consider an open subset of and the Colombeau algebras G(), G (), G c (), Gc () constructed on it. We use the adjective local since the algebras which we will work with are characterized by representatives satisfying boundedness conditions on compact sets. We recall that G() and G () are both Fréchet C-modules when topologized through the families of ultra-pseudo-seminorms {P K,j } K,j N ([5, Example 3.6]) and {P G (K)} K ([5, Example 3.12]), respectively, while G c () and Gc () are equipped with the strict inductive limit C-linear topology of the sequences (G Kn (), {P GKn (),j} j N ) n N ([5, Example 3.7]) and (GK n (), P G Kn ()) n N ([5, Example 3.13]), respectively. For this choice of topologies it is clear that the identity between representatives induces the following C-linear and continuous embeddings: G c () G(), Gc () G (), G () G(), Gc () G c (). Moreover, by the arguments presented before Theorem 1.2, which concern G c () and G() but can be easily adapted to Gc () and G (), we conclude that G c () is dense in G() and Gc () is dense in G (). First we concentrate on embedding procedures. Example 1.3 provides a simple way of embedding distributions into the topological dual of a Colombeau algebra, which essentially consists in using the distribution as a representative of a C-linear and continuous map.
