Verma modules and preproectve algebras Chrstof GEISS, Bernard LECLERC and Jan SCHRÖER arxv:math/ v2 [math.rt] 30 Jul 2005 Abstract We gve a geometrc constructon of the Verma modules of a symmetrc Kac-Moody Le algebra g n terms of constructble functons on the varetes of nlpotent fnte-dmensonal modules of the correspondng preproectve algebra Λ. 1 Introducton Let g be the symmetrc Kac-Moody Le algebra assocated to a fnte unorented graph Γ wthout loop. Let n denote a maxmal nlpotent subalgebra of g. In [Lu1, 12], Lusztg has gven a geometrc constructon of U(n ) n terms of certan Lagrangan varetes. These varetes can be nterpreted as module varetes for the preproectve algebra Λ attached to the graph Γ by Gelfand and Ponomarev [GP]. In Lusztg s constructon, U(n ) gets dentfed wth an algebra (M, ) of constructble functons on these varetes, where s a convoluton product nspred by Rngel s multplcaton for Hall algebras. Later, Nakama gave a smlar constructon of the hghest weght rreducble ntegrable g- modules L(λ) n terms of some new Lagrangan varetes whch dffer from Lusztg s ones by the ntroducton of some extra vector spacesw k for each vertexk ofγ, and by consderng only stable ponts nstead of the whole varety [Na, 10]. The am of ths paper s to extend Lusztg s orgnal constructon and to endow M wth the structure of a Verma module M(λ). To do ths we frst gve a varant of the geometrcal constructon of the ntegrable g-modules L(λ), usng functons on some natural open subvaretes of Lusztg s varetes nstead of functons on Nakama s varetes (Theorem 1). These varetes have a smple descrpton n terms of the preproectve algebra Λ and of certan nectve Λ-modules q λ. Havng realzed the ntegrable modules L(λ) as quotents of M, t s possble, usng the comultplcaton of U(n ), to construct geometrcally the rasng operators E λ End(M) whch make M nto the Verma module M(λ) (Theorem 2). Note that we manage n ths way to realze Verma modules wth arbtrary hghest weght (not necessarly domnant). Fnally, we dualze ths settng and gve a geometrc constructon of the dual Verma module M(λ) n terms of the delta functons δ x M attached to the fnte-dmensonal nlpotent Λ- modules x (Theorem 3). C. Gess acknowledges support from DGAPA grant IN B. Leclerc s grateful to the GDR 2432 and the GDR 2249 for ther support. J. Schröer was supported by a research fellowshp from the DFG (Deutsche Forschungsgemenschaft). 1
2 Verma modules 2.1 Let g be the symmetrc Kac-Moody Le algebra assocated wth a fnte unorented graph Γ wthout loop. The set of vertces of the graph s denoted by I. The (generalzed) Cartan matrx of g sa = (a ), I, where a = 2 and, for, a s the number of edges between and. 2.2 Let g = n h n be a Cartan decomposton of g, where h s a Cartan subalgebra and (n,n ) a par of opposte maxmal nlpotent subalgebras. Letb = n h. The Chevalley generators of n (resp. n ) are denoted bye ( I) (resp. f ) and we set h = [e,f ]. 2.3 Letα denote the smple root ofgassocated wth I. Let( ; ) be a symmetrc blnear form on h such that (α ; α ) = a. The lattce of ntegral weghts n h s denoted by P, and the sublattce spanned by the smple roots s denoted by Q. We put P + = {λ P (λ; α ) 0, ( I)}, Q + = Q P Let λ P and let M(λ) be the Verma module wth hghest weght λ. Ths s the nduced g-module defned by M(λ) = U(g) U(b) Cu λ, where u λ s a bass of the one-dmensonal representaton of b gven by hu λ = λ(h)u λ, nu λ = 0, (h h, n n). As ap -graded vector spacem(λ) = U(n ) (up to a degree shft byλ). M(λ) has a unque smple quotent denoted byl(λ), whch s ntegrable f and only fλ P +. In ths case, the kernel of the g-homomorphsm M(λ) L(λ) s the g-module I(λ) generated by the vectors 3 Constructble functons f (λ;α )+1 u λ, ( I). 3.1 Let X be an algebrac varety over C endowed wth ts Zarsk topology. A map f from X to a vector space V s sad to be constructble f ts mage f(x) s fnte, and for each v f(x) the premage f 1 (v) s a constructble subset of X. 3.2 By χ(a) we denote the Euler characterstc of a constructble subset A of X. For a constructble map f : X V one defnes f(x) = χ(f 1 (v))v V. x X v V More generally, for a constructble subset A of X we wrte = x Af(x) χ(f 1 (v) A)v. v V 2
4 Preproectve algebras 4.1 Let Λ be the preproectve algebra assocated to the graph Γ (see for example [R, GLS]). Ths s an assocatve C-algebra, whch s fnte-dmensonal f and only f Γ s a graph of type A,D,E. Let s denote the smple one-dmensonal Λ-module assocated wth I, and let p be ts proectve cover and q ts nectve hull. Agan, p and q are fnte-dmensonal f and only f Γ s a graph of type A,D,E. 4.2 A fnte-dmensonal Λ-module x s nlpotent f and only f t has a composton seres wth all factors of the form s ( I). We wll dentfy the dmenson vector of x wth an element β Q + by settng dm(s ) = α. 4.3 Let q be an nectve Λ-module of the form q = I q a for some nonnegatve ntegers a ( I). Lemma 1 Let x be a fnte-dmensonal Λ-module somorphc to a submodule of q. If f 1 : x q and f 2 : x q are two monomorphsms, then there exsts an automorphsm g : q q such that f 2 = gf 1. Proof Indeed, q s the nectve hull of ts socle b = I s a. Let c ( = 1,2) be a complement of f (socle(x)) nb. Then c 1 = c2 and the maps h := f d : x c q, ( = 1,2) are nectve hulls. The result then follows from the uncty of the nectve hull. Hence, up to somorphsm, there s a unque way to embed x nto q. 4.4 LetMbe the algebra of constructble functons on the varetes of fnte-dmensonal nlpotent Λ-modules defned by Lusztg [Lu2] to gve a geometrc realzaton of U(n ). We recall ts defnton. For β = I b α Q +, let Λ β denote the varety of nlpotent Λ-modules wth dmenson vector β. Recall that Λ β s endowed wth an acton of the algebrac group G β = I GL b (C), so that two ponts of Λ β are somorphc as Λ-modules f and only f they belong to the same G β - orbt. Let M β denote the vector space of constructble functons fromλ β tocwhch are constant on G β -orbts. Let M = β Q + Mβ. One defnes a multplcaton on M as follows. For f M β,g M γ and x Λ β+γ, we have (f g)(x) = f(x )g(x ), (1) where the ntegral s over the varety of x-stable subspaces U of x of dmenson γ, x s the Λ- submodule of x obtaned by restrcton to U and x = x/x. In the sequel n order to smplfy 3 U
notaton, we wll not dstngush between the subspaceu and the submodule x ofxcarred byu. Thus we shall rather wrte (f g)(x) = f(x/x )g(x ), (2) x where the ntegral s over the varety of submodules x of x of dmenson γ. For I, the varetyλ α s reduced to a sngle pont : the smple modules. Denote by1 the functon mappng ths pont to1. Let G(,x) denote the varety of all submodules y of x such that x/y = s. Then by (2) we have (1 g)(x) = g(y). (3) y G(,x) Let M denote the subalgebra of M generated by the functons 1 ( I). By Lusztg [Lu2], (M, ) s somorphc tou(n ) by mappng 1 to the Chevalley generator f. 4.5 In the dentfcaton of U(n ) wth M, formula (3) represents the left multplcaton by f. In order to endow M wth the structure of a Verma module we need to ntroduce the followng mportant defnton. Forν P +, let q ν = I q (ν;α ). Lusztg has shown [Lu3, 2.1] that Nakama s Lagrangan varetes for the geometrc realzaton of L(ν) are somorphc to the Grassmann varetes ofλ-submodules of q ν wth a gven dmenson vector. Let x be a fnte-dmensonal nlpotent Λ-module somorphc to a submodule of the nectve module q ν. Let us fx an embeddng F : x q ν and dentfy x wth a submodule of q ν va F. Defnton 1 For I let G(x,ν,) be the varety of submodules y of q ν contanng x and such that y/x s somorphc tos. Ths s a proectve varety whch, by 4.3, depends only (up to somorphsm) on, ν and the soclass of x. 5 Geometrc realzaton of ntegrable rreducble g-modules 5.1 For λ P + and β Q +, let Λ λ β denote the varety of nlpotent Λ-modules of dmenson vector β whch are somorphc to a submodule of q λ. Equvalently Λ λ β conssts of the nlpotent modules of dmenson vector β whose socle contans s wth multplcty at most (λ; α ) ( I). Ths varety has been consdered by Lusztg [Lu4, 1.5]. In partcular t s known that Λ λ β s an open subset of Λ β, and that the number of ts rreducble components s equal to the dmenson of the (λ β)-weght space of L(λ). 5.2 Defne M λ β to be the vector space of constructble functons on Λλ β whch are constant on G β -orbts. Let M λ β denote the subspace of M λ β obtaned by restrctng elements of M β to Λ λ β. 4
Put M λ = M β λ β and Mλ = β Mλ β. For I defne endomorphsms E,F,H of M λ as follows: (E f)(x) = f(y), (f M λ β, x Λλ β α ), (4) (F f)(x) = y G(x,λ,) y G(,x) f(y), (f M λ β, x Λλ β+α ), (5) (H f)(x) = (λ β;α )f(x), (f M λ β, x Λλ β ). (6) Theorem 1 The endomorphsms E,F,H of M λ leave stable the subspace M λ. Denote agan by E,F,H the nduced endomorphsms of M λ. Then the assgnments e E, f F, h H, gve a representaton of g on M λ somorphc to the rreducble representaton L(λ). 5.3 The proof of Theorem 1 wll nvolve a seres of lemmas For = ( 1,..., r ) I r and a = (a 1,...,a r ) N r, defne the varety G(x,λ,(,a)) of flags of Λ-modules f = (x = y 0 y 1 y r q λ ) wthy k /y k 1 = s a k k (1 k r). As n Defnton 1, ths s a proectve varety dependng (up to somorphsm) only on(,a),λand the soclass ofxand not on the choce of a specfc embeddng of x nto q λ. Lemma 2 Let f M λ β and x Λλ β a 1 α 1 a rα r. Put E (a) = (1/a!)E a (E (ar) r E (a 1) 1 f)(x) = f(y r ). f G(x,λ,(,a)) The proof s standard and wll be omtted By [Lu1, 12.11] the endomorphsms F satsfy the Serre relatons 1 a p=0 for every. A smlar argument shows that ( 1) p F (p) F F (1 a p) = 0 Lemma 3 The endomorphsms E satsfy the Serre relatons for every. 1 a p=0 ( 1) p E (p) E E (1 a p) = 0 Proof Let f M λ β and x Λλ β α (1 a )α. By Lemma 2, (E (p) E E (1 a p) f)(x) = f(y 3 ) f 5. We have
the ntegral beng taken on the varety of flags f = (x y 1 y 2 y 3 q λ ) wth y 1 /x = s 1 a p,y 2 /y 1 = s and y 3 /y 2 = s p. Ths ntegral can be rewrtten as f(y 3 )χ(f[y 3 ;p]) y 3 where the ntegral s now over all submodulesy 3 ofq λ of dmensonβcontanng x andf[y 3 ;p] s the varety of flagsfas above wth fxed last stepy 3. Now, by modng out the submodule x at each step of the flag, we are reduced to the same stuaton as n [Lu1, 12.11], and the same argument allows to show that whch proves the Lemma. 1 a p=0 χ(f[y 3 ;p]) = 0, Let x Λ λ β. Let ε (x) denote the multplcty of s n the head of x. Let ϕ (x) denote the multplcty of s n the socle of q λ /x. Lemma 4 Let, I (not necessarly dstnct). Let y be a submodule of q λ contanng x and such that y/x = s. Then Proof We have short exact sequences ϕ (y) ε (y) = ϕ (x) ε (x) a. 0 x q λ q λ /x 0, (7) 0 y q λ q λ /y 0, (8) 0 x y s 0, (9) 0 s q λ /x q λ /y 0. (10) Clearly,ε (x) = Hom Λ (x,s ), the dmenson ofhom Λ (x,s ). Smlarlyε (y) = Hom Λ (y,s ), ϕ (x) = Hom Λ (s,q λ /x), ϕ (y) = Hom Λ (s,q λ /y). Hence we have to show that Hom Λ (x,s ) Hom Λ (y,s ) = Hom Λ (s,q λ /x) Hom Λ (s,q λ /y) a. (11) In our proof, we wll use a property of preproectve algebras proved n [CB, 1], namely, for any fnte-dmensonal Λ-modules m and n there holds Ext 1 Λ(m,n) = Ext 1 Λ(n,m). (12) (a) If = then a = 2, Hom Λ (s,s ) = 1 and Ext 1 Λ (s,s ) = 0 snce Γ has no loops. Applyng Hom Λ (,s ) to (9) we get the exact sequence 0 Hom Λ (s,s ) Hom Λ (y,s ) Hom Λ (x,s ) 0, hence Hom Λ (x,s ) Hom Λ (y,s ) = 1. 6
Smlarly applyng Hom Λ (s, ) to (10) we get an exact sequence hence 0 Hom Λ (s,s ) Hom Λ (s,q λ /x) Hom Λ (s,q λ /y) 0, Hom Λ (s,q λ /x) Hom Λ (s,q λ /y) = 1, and (11) follows. (b) If, we have Hom Λ (s,s ) = 0 and Ext 1 Λ (s,s ) = Ext 1 Λ (s,s ) = a. Applyng Hom Λ (s, ) to (9) we get an exact sequence hence 0 Hom Λ (s,x) Hom Λ (s,y) 0, Hom Λ (s,x) Hom Λ (s,y) = 0. (13) Moreover, by [Bo, 1.1], Ext 2 Λ (s,s ) = 0 because there are no relatons from to n the defnng relatons of Λ. (Note that the proof of ths result n [Bo] only requres that I J 2 (here we use the notaton of [Bo]). One does not need the addtonal assumpton J n I for some n. Compare also the dscusson n [BK].) Snce q λ s nectve Ext 1 Λ (s,q λ ) = 0, thus applyng Hom Λ (s, ) to (7) we get an exact sequence hence 0 Hom Λ (s,x) Hom Λ (s,q λ ) Hom Λ (s,q λ /x) Ext 1 Λ(s,x) 0, Hom Λ (s,x) Hom Λ (s,q λ ) + Hom Λ (s,q λ /x) Ext 1 Λ (s,x) = 0. (14) Smlarly, applyng Hom Λ (s, ) to (8) we get Hom Λ (s,y) Hom Λ (s,q λ ) + Hom Λ (s,q λ /y) Ext 1 Λ(s,y) = 0. (15) Subtractng (14) from (15) and takng nto account (12) and (13) we obtan Ext 1 Λ (x,s ) Ext 1 Λ (y,s ) = Hom Λ (s,q λ /x) Hom Λ (s,q λ /y). (16) Now applyng Hom Λ (,s ) to (9) we get the long exact sequence hence 0 Hom Λ (y,s ) Hom Λ (x,s ) Ext 1 Λ(s,s ) Ext 1 Λ(y,s ) Ext 1 Λ(x,s ) 0, Hom Λ (y,s ) Hom Λ (x,s ) a Ext 1 Λ (y,s ) + Ext 1 Λ (x,s ) = 0, thus, takng nto account (16), we have proved (11). Lemma 5 Wth the same notaton we have ϕ (x) ε (x) = (λ β;α ). 7
Proof We use an nducton on the heght ofβ. Ifβ = 0 thenxs the zero module andε (x) = 0. On the other handq λ /x = q λ andϕ (x) = (λ;α ) by defnton ofq λ. Now assume that the lemma holds for x Λ λ β and let y Λλ β+α be a submodule of q λ contanng x. Usng Lemma 4 we get that ϕ (y) ε (y) = (λ β;α ) a = (λ β α ;α ), as requred, and the lemma follows. Lemma 6 Let f M λ β. We have (E F F E )(f) = δ (λ β;α )f. Proof Let x Λ λ β α +α. By defnton of E and F we have (E F f)(x) = wherepdenotes the varety of parsp=(u,y) of submodules ofq λ wthx u,y u,u/x = s and u/y = s. Smlarly, (F E f)(x) = f(y) whereqdenotes the varety of parsq = (v,y) of submodules of q λ wthv x,v y,x/v = s and y/v = s. Consder a submodule y such that there exsts n P (resp. n Q) at least one par of the form (u,y) (resp. (v,y)). Clearly, the subspaces carryng the submodules x and y have the same dmenson d and ther ntersecton has dmenson at least d 1. If ths ntersecton has dmenson exactly d 1 then there s a unque par (u,y) (resp. (v,y)), namely (x+y,y) (resp. (x y,y)). Ths means that f(y) = f(y). p P; y x p P q Q f(y) q Q; y x In partcular, snce when we cannot have y = x, t follows that On the other hand f = we have (E F F E )(f) = 0, ( ). ((E F F E )(f))(x) = f(x)(χ(p ) χ(q )) where P s the varety of submodules u of q λ contanng x such that u/x = s, and Q s the varety of submodules v of x such that x/v = s. Clearly we have χ(q ) = ε (x) and χ(p ) = ϕ (x). The result then follows from Lemma The followng relatons for the endomorphsms E,F,H of M λ are easly checked [H,H ] = 0, [H,E ] = a E, [H,F ] = a F. The verfcaton s left to the reader. Hence, usng Lemmas 3 and 6, we have proved that the assgnments e E,f F,h H, gve a representaton of g on M λ. 8
Lemma 7 The endomorphsms E,F,H leave stable the subspace M λ. Proof It s obvous for H, and t follows from the defnton of M λ for F. It remans to prove that f f M λ β then E f M λ β α. We shall use nducton on the heght of β. We can assume that f s of the form F g for some g M λ β α. By nducton we can also assume that E g M λ β α α. We have E f = E F g = F E g+δ (λ β +α ;α )g, and the rght-hand sde clearly belongs to M λ β α. Lemma 8 The representaton of g carred bym λ s somorphc tol(λ). Proof For all f M β and all x Λ λ β+(a +1)α we have f 1 (a +1) (x) = 0. Indeed, by defnton of Λ λ the socle of x contans s wth multplcty at most a. Therefore the left deal of M generated by the functons 1 (a +1) s mapped to zero by the lnear map M M λ sendng a functon f on Λ β to ts restrcton to Λ λ β. It follows that for all β the dmenson of Mλ β s at most the dmenson of the (λ β)-weght space of L(λ). On the other hand, the functon 1 0 mappng the zero Λ-module to 1 s a hghest weght vector of M λ of weght λ. Hence 1 0 M λ generates a quotent of the Verma module M(λ), and snce L(λ) s the smallest quotent of M(λ) we must have M λ = L(λ). Ths fnshes the proof of Theorem 1. 6 Geometrc realzaton of Verma modules 6.1 Let β Q + and x Λ β α. Let q = I q a be the nectve hull of x. For every ν P + such that (ν;α ) a the nectve module q ν contans a submodule somorphc to x. Hence, for such a weght ν and for anyf M β, the ntegral f(y) s well-defned. y G(x,ν,) Proposton 1 Let λ P and choose ν P + such that (ν;α ) a for all I. The number f(y) (ν λ; α )f(x s ) (17) y G(x,ν,) does not depend on the choce of ν. Denote ths number by(e λ f)(x). Then, the functon belongs tom β α. E λ f : x (E λ f)(x) Denote by E λ the endomorphsm of M mappng f M β to E λ f. Notce that Formula (5), whch s nothng but (3), also defnes an endomorphsm of M ndependent of λ whch we agan denote by F. Fnally Formula (6) makes sense for any λ, not necessarly domnant, and any f M β. Ths gves an endomorphsm of M that we shall denote byh λ. Theorem 2 The assgnments e E λ, f F, h H λ, gve a representaton of g on M somorphc to the Verma module M(λ). The rest of ths secton s devoted to the proofs of Proposton 1 and Theorem 2. 9
6.2 Denote by e λ the endomorphsm of the Verma module M(λ) mplementng the acton of the Chevalley generator e. Let E λ denote the endomorphsm of U(n ) obtaned by transportng e λ va the natural dentfcaton M(λ) = U(n ). Let be the comultplcaton of U(n ). Lemma 9 Forλ,µ P and u U(n ) we have (E λ+µ u) = (E λ 1+1 E µ ) u. Proof By lnearty t s enough to prove ths for u of the form u = f 1 f r. A smple calculaton n U(g) shows that = f 1 f r e + e f 1 f r = f 1 f r e + r δ k f 1 f k 1 h f k+1 f r k=1 ( r r δ k (f 1 f k 1 f k+1 f r h k=1 It follows that, for ν P, E ν (f 1 f r ) = r δ k ((ν;α ) k=1 r s=k+1 s=k+1 a s ) f 1 f k 1 f k+1 f r ) a s )f 1 f k 1 f k+1 f r. Now, usng that s the algebra homomorphsm defned by (f ) = f f, one can fnsh the proof of the lemma. Detals are omtted We endow U(n ) wth the Q + -gradng gven by deg(f ) = α. Let u be a homogeneous element of U(n ). Wrte u = u 1+u () f +A, where A s a sum of homogeneous terms of the form u u wthdeg(u ) α. Ths defnes u () unambguously. Lemma 10 For λ, µ P we have E λ+µ u = E λ u+(µ;α )u (). Proof We calculate n two ways the unque term of the form E 1 n (E λ+µ u). On the one hand, we have obvously E 1 = E λ+µ u 1. On the other hand, usng Lemma 9, we have E 1 = E λ u 1+(1 E µ )(u() f ) = E λ u 1+(µ;α )u () 1. Therefore, E = E λ+µ u = E λ u+(µ;α )u (). 10
6.4 Now let us return to the geometrc realzaton M of U(n ). Let E λ denote the endomorphsm of M obtaned by transportng e λ va the dentfcaton M(λ) = M. Lemma 11 Let λ P +,f M β and x Λ λ β α. Then (E λ f)(x) = y G(x,λ,) f(y). Proof Let r λ : M M λ be the lnear map sendng f M β to ts restrcton to Λ λ β. By Theorem 1, ths s a homomorphsm of U(n )-modules mappng the hghest weght vector of M = M(λ) to the hghest weght vector of M λ = L(λ). It follows that r λ s n fact a homomorphsm of U(g)-modules, hence the restrcton of E λf to Λλ β α s gven by Formula (4) of Secton 5. Let aganλ P be arbtrary, and pckf M β. It follows from Lemma 10 that for anyµ P E λ+µ f (µ;α )f () = E λ f. Let x Λ β α. Choose ν = λ+µ suffcently domnant so that x s somorphc to a submodule of q ν. Then by Lemma 11, we have (E ν f)(x) = f(y). y G(x,ν,) On the other hand, by the geometrc descrpton of gven n [GLS, 6.1], f we wrte f = f 1+f () 1 +A where A s a sum of homogeneous terms of the form f f wth deg(f ) α, we have that f () s the functon on Λ β α gven byf () (x) = f(x s ). Hence we obtan that for x Λ β α (E λ f)(x) = f(y) (ν λ;α )f(x s ). y G(x,ν,) Ths proves both Proposton 1 and Theorem Let λ P +. We note the followng consequence of Lemma 11. Proposton 2 Let λ P +. The lnear map r λ : M M λ sendng f M β to ts restrcton to s the geometrc realzaton of the homomorphsm ofg-modules M(λ) L(λ). Λ λ β 7 Dual Verma modules 7.1 Let S be the ant-automorphsm of U(g) defned by S(e ) = f, S(f ) = e, S(h ) = h, ( I). Recall that, gven a left U(g)-module M, the dual module M s defned by (uϕ)(m) = ϕ(s(u)m), (u U(g), m M, ϕ M ). Ths s also a left module. If M s an nfnte-dmensonal module wth fnte-dmensonal weght spaces M ν, we take for M the graded dual M = ν P M ν. For λ P we have L(λ) = L(λ), hence the quotent map M(λ) L(λ) gves by dualty an embeddng L(λ) M(λ) of U(g)-modules. 11
7.2 LetM = β Q + M β denote the vector space graded dual of M. Forx Λ β, we denote by δ x the delta functon gven by δ x (f) = f(x), (f M β ). Note that the map δ : x δ x s a constructble map from Λ β to M β. Indeed the premage of δ x s the ntersecton of the constructble subsets M (1,..., r) = {y Λ β (1 1 1 r )(y) = (1 1 1 r )(x)}, (α 1 + +α r = β). 7.3 We can now dualze the results of Sectons 5 and 6 as follows. For λ P and x Λ β put (E)(δ x ) = δ y, (18) (F λ )(δ x ) = y G(,x) y G(x,ν,) δ y (ν λ; α )δ x s, (19) (H λ )(δ x ) = (λ β;α )δ x, (20) where n (19) the weght ν P + s such thatxs somorphc to a submodule ofq ν. The followng theorem then follows mmedately from Theorems 1 and 2. Theorem 3 () The formulas above defne endomorphsms E,Fλ of M, and the assgnments e E, f F λ, h H λ, gve a representaton of g on M somorphc to the dual Verma module M(λ). () If λ P +, the subspace M λ of M spanned by the delta functons δ x of the fntedmensonal nlpotent submodules x of q λ carres the rreducble submodule L(λ). For such a module x, Formula (19) smplfes as follows (F λ )(δ x ) = δ y. y G(x,λ,),H λ Example 1 Let g be of type A 2. Take λ = 1 + 2, where s the fundamental weght correspondng to I. Thus L(λ) s somorphc to the 8-dmensonal adont representaton of g = sl 3. A Λ-module x conssts of a par of lnear maps x 21 : V 1 V 2 and x 12 : V 2 V 1 such that x 12 x 21 = x 21 x 12 = 0. The nectve Λ-module q = q λ has the followng form : ( ) u1 u q = 2 v 1 v 2 Ths dagram means that (u 1,v 1 ) s a bass of V 1, that (u 2,v 2 ) s a bass of V 2, and that q 21 (u 1 ) = u 2, q 21 (v 1 ) = 0, q 12 (v 2 ) = v 1, q 12 (u 2 ) = 0. Usng the same type of notaton, we can exhbt the followng submodules of q : x 1 = ( v 1 ), x2 = ( u 2 ), x3 = ( v 1 u 2 ), x4 = ( u 1 u 2 ), x5 = ( v 1 v 2 ), 12
( ) ( ) u1 u x 6 = 2 u, x v 7 = 2. 1 v 1 v 2 Ths s not an exhaustve lst. For example, x 4 = ( ) (u 1 +v 1 ) u 2 s another submodule, somorphc tox 4. Denotng by0the zero submodule, we see thatδ 0 s the hghest weght vector of L(λ) M(λ). Next, wrtng for smplctyδ nstead ofδ x andf nstead off λ, Theorem 3 () gves the followng formulas for the acton of the F s onl(λ). F 1 δ 0 = δ 1, F 2 δ 0 = δ 2, F 1 δ 2 = δ 3 +δ 4, F 2 δ 1 = δ 3 +δ 5, F 1 δ 3 = F 1 δ 4 = δ 6, F 2 δ 3 = F 2 δ 5 = δ 7, F 2 δ 3 = F 1 δ 6 = δ q, F 1 δ q = F 2 δ q = 0. Now consder the Λ-module x = s 1 s 1. Snce x s not somorphc to a submodule of q λ, the vector δ x does not belong tol(λ). Let us calculate F δ x ( = 1,2) by means of Formula (19). We can take ν = 2 1. The nectve Λ-module q ν has the followng form : ( ) w1 w q ν = 2 v 1 v 2 It s easy to see that the varety G(x,ν,2) s somorphc to a proectve lne P 1, and that all ponts on ths lne are somorphc to ( ) w1 y = v 1 v 2 as Λ-modules. Hence, F 2 δ x = χ(p 1 )δ y (ν λ;α 2 )δ x s2 = 2δ y +δ s1 s 1 s 2. On the other hand, G(x, ν, 1) =, so that F 1 δ x = (ν λ;α 1 )δ x s1 = δ s1 s 1 s 1. References [Bo] K.
