arxv:math/05272v [math.gm] 8 Dec 2005 A GENERALIZATION OF AN INEQUALITY FROM IMO 2005 NIKOLAI NIKOLOV The preset paper was spred by the thrd problem from the IMO A specal award was gve to Yure Boreko from Moldova for hs soluto to ths problem. It was the frst such award the last te years. Here s the problem. Problem. Let x, y ad z be postve real umbers such that xyz. Prove that x 5 x 2 x 5 +y 2 +z + y5 y 2 2 y 5 +z 2 +x + z5 z 2 2 z 5 +x 2 +y 0. 2 The ma objectve of ths paper s to prove the followg more geeral equalty: Proposto. Let x,x 2,...,x be postve real umbers such that. The, for all α, x α x + + +x α x 0. () Remark. We get the metoed IMO problem by choosg = 3 ad α = 5 2, ad applyg the result to the umbers x2, y 2 ad z 2. The statemet s trval for = ; thus, we assume that 2. We wll cosder two cases, depedg o α. I the frst case we assume that α 2+. We ca the prove a stroger equalty whch all deomators are equal to the sum of the umbers. Ths was the approach used by Yure Boreko. (Ths dea was also suggested by the Armea deputy leader Nar Sedrakya.) The stroger equalty fals for α > 2+. I ths case, we wll estmate the terms of the sum from below by sutable real umbers whch sum to zero ad have equal deomators. Thus, we use two dfferet deas for the two cases. The thrd problem from IMO 2205 s o the boudary of the toe cases the proof of Proposto. It would be terestg to fd a ufed ad cocse approach for the proof of Proposto.
2 NIKOLAI NIKOLOV Proof of Proposto : Case. α 2+. We have x α x x α + = x x + x α 2 x α x x α 2 (2). (To prove the equalty (2), cosder the cases x ad x separately). Usg (2) ad the ( aalogous equaltes for x 2,...,x, we get () from the equalty ) x α 2 0, that s, x β, (3) [ where β = 2 α ],. Now, to prove (3) we wll cosder two subcases. Subcase.. β [0,]. The x β (for x 0) s cocave, ad Jese s Iequalty mples ( ) β x x β O the other had,, ad therefore, GM Iequalty. Sce β, we get. (4) by the AM- Now (3) follows from (4) ad (5). [ ] Subcase.2. β,0. The x β =2 x β ( ) β. (5) =2 x β( ) by the AM-GM equalty. Addg to ths equalty the aalogous equaltes for x 2,...,x yelds x β x β( ). (6)
A GENERALIZATION OF AN INEQUALITY FROM IMO But 0 β( ). Thus x β( ) (7) by Subcase.. Now (3) follows from (6) ad (7). Case 2. α 2+. It suffces to show that x α x x α + xγ x γ () x γ (8) for some γ, ad the to add to (8) the aalogous equaltes for x 2,...,x. Subtractg from both sdes (8) gves x α + =2 x γ () x γ or, equvaletly, xα + () x γ =2 x γ. Subtractg from both sdes yelds x (x α ) ()xγ =2 x γ. Sce, we have x α, ad the above equalty wll follow from the homogeeous equalty x x α x α ()xγ =2 x γ. We may ow assume that x =. Hece, we eed to show that ( ) + G, (9) A where A = =2 x γ ad G = =2 x α. We ow choose γ = ()(α ), whch mples that A G by the AM-GM Iequalty.
4 NIKOLAI NIKOLOV For the proof of (9), we wll cosder two subcases. Subcase 2... =2 The (9) follows from the equaltes 0 G, ad A ; that s, =2 +. Subcase =2 If A >, the the left sde of (9) s oegatve, whle the rght sde s egatve, ad (9) s thus true. Otherwse, G 0, ad A (9) wll follow oce we show that =2 x +, that s,. Sce α 2 + (that s γ ), the fucto xγ (for x 0) s covex. Jese s Iequalty ow mples that ( =2 ) γ A, ad (9) s prove. Remarks. a) We already metoed that the approach Case s ot applcable Case 2, sce (3) s correct whe β [ ],. Furthermore, t follows from Subcase. that, for β >, the opposte equalty holds. The same equalty follows from Subcase. for β ad = (to see ths, cosder the recprocals of x,...,x ). O the ( ) other sde for 3, β, ad = ether (3) or ts opposte holds true. To ths am, we ote that f x = x, x 2 = = x =, the the dfferece betwee the left sde ad the x rght sde of (3) equals ( x x β() +() x ). x β
A GENERALIZATION OF AN INEQUALITY FROM IMO Whe β (,) ad x +, ths dfferece teds to +, whle whe β < ad x 0+ t teds to. I partcular, whe ( ) β,, ths dfferece ca have ether sg. b) Let γ = ()(α ). The (8) holds for each α oly whe = 2. Ideed, t follows form (9), whch s true for = 2 ad arbtrary α (check!). Otheothersdewhe =,the(8)sequvalet to (9). Whe 3, f oe chooses x 2 = ( ( 3 ) ( ) γ γ, x3 = = x =, 2 2 the G ad A are less tha ad depedet of α. For α +, oe has x 2 + ad the left sde of (9) teds to 0, whle the rght sde s a fxed postve umber. Thus, (9) fals for α close to, ad does (8). For a fxed 3, oe mght be terested fdg the least α > that makes (8) true for each α α ad to prove that t fals for < α < α. c) Note that, whe α = 2 +, we have γ = ad (8) follows from (2) by the AM-GM equalty for the umbers x 2,...,x. d) Havg md Proposto, oe could expect that for each α < the opposte equalty to () wll be satsfed. For = t s trval, ad the reader may easly check t for = 2. Ufortuately, for 3 ths s ot true. For example, f x = x >, x 2 = = x = x ad α, the left sde of () teds to x, whch s postve for x < ( ) 2 (> for > 2). It s terestg to fd the least α < such that the opposte equalty to () s true for α α ad to prove that t fals for α < α. Here we ca cosder the followg. Proposto 2. Suppose 2. If α ad the postve real umbers x,x 2,...,x satsfy, the x α x + + +x α x 0.
6 NIKOLAI NIKOLOV Proof: Ths follows from (3) ad x α x + + +x α x xα. Ackowledgemets.
