SUMMARY Holographic Nuclear Matter is rather different from the real NM but it is very interesting on its own right. OUTLINE HQCD versus real QCD from the Nuclear Matter s point of view. Making the Holographic Nuclear Matter. Popcorn transitions into the fourth dimension.
Why is the Holographic QCD so different from the real QCD? 1. Large N c limit. needed for semiclassical SUGRA+branes 2. Largeλ = N c gym 2 limit. 3. Model dependence. No holographic model is dual to pure QCD, only to QCD + crap, and the extra crap affects the hadron spectrum, the nuclear forces, etc.
T QCD Phase Diagram Quark Gluon Plasma 170 MeV Quark Liquid: Color SC Hadron / Glueball Gas 1 GeV Nucleon Liquid Quark Liquid: CFL µ Note: real QCD (N C = 3, N f = 3, physical quark masses) but no electrostatic forces = not quite real life.
Large N c Limit Large N c but fixed N f = 2 or 3. Gluons dominate QGP. Sharp confinement-deconfinement transition at T c almost independent on µ. No color SC or CFL in a quark liquid at high µ q = µ/n c. For µ q Λ QCD thequarksformaweaklycoupledfermiliquid. Butnear the Fermi surface, the quarks and the holes combine into meson-like and baryon-like excitations = the quarkyonic phase. M baryon N c while M meson and M glueball stay finite. No baryons in glueball/meson gas for T < T c, µ < M baryon.
Nuclear forces between baryons: V N c, more precisely ˆV(x,spins,isospins) = N c F C (r) + N c (I 1 I 2 )(S 1 S 2 )F S (r) +N c (I 1 I 2 ) [ (ns 1 )(ns 2 ) 1 3 (S 1S 2 ) ] F T (r) +O(1/N c ) for fixed F C (r), F S (r), F T (r). In a nucleus E pot per nucleon N c while E kin per nucleon 1/N c (finite density = p N 0 c while M N c = E kin = p2 2M N 1 c ), which suppresses quantum effects as E kin E pot 1 N 2 c. At large N c cold baryonic matter forms a semiclassical crystal instead of a quantum liquid!

Making Holographic QCD Start with N c color D-branes spanning Minkowski compact. Usually D3 branes at a singularity, or D4 branes on a twisted circle. Open strings connecting the branes produce U(N c ) gluons + junk. For λ = N c gym 2 N cg str 1, the D-branes merge into big fat black brane = warped geometry with Ramond-Ramond fluxes. Modes of the bulk excitations (gravitons, etc.) in this geometry are dual to the QCD glueballs. Or rather, the glueballs + a lot of extra junk that QCD does not have. The interesting bulk dimensions are Minkowski plus the radial direction ( to the branes). Glueball modes are blind to the other dimensions.
To make hadrons (mesons and baryons), add N f flavor D-branes (usually D5, D6, D7, or D8). Open strings connecting flavor branes to color branes give rise to quarks. WhileN c andλ,then f staysfiniteandn f g str 1 = flavor branes remain D-branes but now they are embedded into a warped geometry. Open strings = Nf 2 vector and scalar fields living on the flavor branes. Modes of these fields are dual to the QCD mesons. YM instantons of the vector fields on the flavor branes are dual to the QCD baryons.
Sakai Sugimoto Model N f D8 N f D8 N c D4 quarks gluons antiquarks
For large λ, the D4 color branes dissolve into warped geometry R 3,1 S 4 cigar and F 4 RR flux on S 4. The D8 flavor branes span R 3,1 S 4 U-shaped line on the cigar: hadrons glueballs D8 and D8 branes reconnect = U(N f ) U(N f ) U(N f ) chiral symmetry breakdown
Effective 5D theory of hadrons in Holographic QCD: Ignore the S 4 (restrict to the s-wave modes only) and focus on the other 5 dimensions of the flavor branes (Minkowski U). Fields: 5D Vectors A µ and scalars Φ in the adjoint of U(N f ). [ 1 ( S = d 4 xdz 12 g 2 tr(f µν F µν ) + tr(d µ ΦD µ Φ)) (z) ] + N c ω 5 (F,A) + N c c(z) tr(φ{f µν,f µν }) where 8π2 ( ) g 2 (z) = λn cm m 1 + (M m z) 2 + O((M m z) 4 ), c(z) = O(1), details not important except c < 1.
A holographic baryon is a YM instanton of the flavor SU(N F ) magnetic fields (µ,ν = 1,2,3,z). It sources the U(1) electric field (via CS coupling) and the singlet scalar. Self-interaction via electric and scalar fields and the z-dependence of g(z) break moduli degeneracy. To first order in 1/λ, E b = N c M m ( λ + λm 2 m Z λm2 m R c2 5λM 2 m The minimum is at Z = 0 (instanton center at the bottom of the U). R = O(1). M m λ ) M b = N c M m (λ + O(1). 1 R 2 ).
Holographic Nuclear Matter is a multi-instanton system To zeroth order in 1/λ the SU(N f ) gauge fields are self-dual = ADHM solutions with 4N f degenerate moduli per baryon (the 4D locations of the instantons, their radii, and the SU(N f ) orientations). At first order, the degeneracy is lifted by Coulomb interactions (via abelian electric and scalar fields) and g(z). Minimizing the net energy WRT to the moduli for different instanton densities leads to may different phases of holographic nuclear matter.
At low densities, g(z) dominates = each instanton falls to the bottom of the U, i.e., to the Z = 0 hyperplane. In that hyperplane, the instantons form a 3D crystalline lattice. z x 1,x 2,x 3 This phase of the holographic nuclear matter is dual to the baryonic crystal of the large-n c QCD.
At high densities, 1/r 2 repulsion between instantons pushes them into the holographic dimension, so the instantons form a 4D lattice: z Z x 1,x 2,x 3 In z direction, the lattice has finite but large size Z lattice spacing = many instantons over each 3D point (x 1,x 2,x 3 ).
From the 3D point of view, the 4D lattice means overlapping baryons = quarks are no longer confined to individual baryons = The 4D instanton lattice of the holographic QCD is dual to the quarkyonic phase of the nuclear matter. (Quark fermi liquid weakly coupled for large N c with baryon-like excitations near the fermi surface.) Rozali, Shieh, Raamsdonk, & Wu (arxiv/ ) argued that Z is related by duality to the baryonic chemical potential µ: (µ M b ) Z n b (3D baryon density) for moderate µ M b M b. For very large µ M b, the relation between µ, n b, and Z is more complicated. In the continuum approximation n b µ 5/2.
BARYONIC POPCORN Transitions from 3D to 4D #hyperplanes 1 2 phase baryon crystal 3 transitional. many quarkyonic These transitions happen for µ M b = O(M b /λ) M b.
Toy Model: Point Charges To understand the transitions between all these phases, we started with a toy model: Ignore the SU(N f ) orientations of the instantons and even their sizes and treat them as point charges repelling each other with spinblind, flavor-blind 4D Coulomb forces. Between these Coulomb forces and z-dependent instanton energies, we have E = const + λn c Mm 3 i z 2 i + N c 2λM m i j 1 (x i x j ) 2 +(z i z j ) 2 This is not an accurate approximation the spin-dependent isovector forces between instantons are comparable to the Coulomb forces, even when the instanton are far apart and the transitions happen when inter-instanton distances are comparable to the instanton sizes. But it does show a sequence of transitions from a single 3D hyperplane z = 0 to two hyperplanes, then to three hyperplanes, etc., etc.
Warm-up: restrict the point charges to x 2 = x 3 = 0 and study transitions from a 1D chain through k = 2,3,4,... 1D layers to a 2D lattice. #layers Z configuration energy per baryon 1 0 π 2 ρ ±ǫ ǫ 2 + π2 ρ πρ 16ǫ 3 +ǫ,0, ǫ 2 3 ǫ2 + π2 ρ πρ 9ǫ + πρ 36ǫ tanh πρ ǫ πǫρ tanh 3 2πǫρ coth 3 4 ±ǫ±δ ǫ 2 +δ 2 + π2 ρ πρ 32ǫ + πρ 64(ǫ+δ) + πρ 64(ǫ δ) coth πǫρ 2 + πρ 32δ tanh πρ(ǫ+δ) 2 tanh πρ(ǫ δ) 2 coth πǫρ 2 Energy in units of N c M m = M b /λ, density ρ in units of λm m, Z in units of 1/ λm m.
Numeric plot of the 4 energies and the phase diagram: 3.5 E straight chain 3 layers zigzag 4 layers 3 layers 4 layers straight chain zigzag 4 layers 3 layers 4 layers Ρ Ρ (ρ in units of λ 1/2 M m ) The straight chain zigzag transition is second-order (ǫ ρ ρ c for ρ just above ρ c ). The other transitions are first-order.
Back to (x 1,x 2,x 3,z): Similar transitions from 3D to 4D. At low 3D densities, the baryons lie in the Z = 0 hyperplane where they form a close-packed 3D lattice, presumably FCC. ǫ At some critical density ρ c ( λm m ) 3 the 3D lattices splits into ρ c two sublattices, even and odd. The even baryons move to Z = +ǫ while the odd baryons move to Z = ǫ. E(ǫ) = ǫ x x 2 +(2ǫ) 2 evenx oddx ( = const + ǫ 2 1 ) 2 x 4 + ǫ 4 ρ oddx oddx 8 x 6 + = const + ǫ 2 (1 C 1 ρ 4/3 ) + ǫ 4 C 2 ρ 2 + Second order phase transition at ρ c = C 3/4 1 (in ( λm m ) 3 units) from ǫ = 0 to ǫ > 0.
Transitions from 2 to 3 or more 3D layers are expected to be firstorder. (But we did not do the actual calculations.) Besides transitions to more layers in Z direction, there may also be phase transitions between different types of 3D lattices, or different ways of stacking 3D layers on top of each other. Ultimately, at very high density, the baryons form a thick 4D lattice, presumably BCC (close-packed in 4D).
Back to Instanton Lattices In the real HQCD, the baryons are instantons of finite size. The instantons overlap = interactions depend on the relative SU(N f ) orientations between the instantons = pain in First-order perturbation theory in 1/λ for the energy of a multiinstanton system: The leading-order O(λ 0 ) SU(N f ) magnetic fields are enough to calculate both the leading O(λN c M m M b )) term and the first sub-leading O(N c M m M b /λ) term of the energy. The leading-order SU(N f ) magnetic fields are self-dual = use the ADHM multi-instanton solutions. They have 4N f ADHM moduli per instanton (center s coordinates, radius, and the SU(N f ) orientation), and the leading-order energy is degenerate: E = λn c M m = M b (per instanton) regardless of the moduli.
At the next order the degeneracy is lifted: E = λn c M m + N c λmm 3 + N c 2λM m d 3 xdzz 2 I(x,z) (E NA ) d 3 x 1 dz 1 d 3 x 2 dz 2 I(x 1,z 1 )I(x 2,z 2 ) (x 1 x 2 ) 2 +(z 1 z 2 ) 2 (E C ) depends on the distribution of the instanton number density I(x, z) in 4D space. Minimizing this energy with respect to the ADHM moduli determines the state of the nuclear matter for any given baryon number per 3D volume.
Method: Take several candidate lattice geometries. For each geometry: 1 : Impose lattice symmetry on the ADHM solution = restrict the ADHM moduli to a finite number of parameters the common radius a of all the instantons, the SU(N f ) rotation between neighboring instantons, and the lattice parameters like ǫ. 2 : Calculate the local 4D instanton number density I(x, z) and hence the interaction energy per baryon E M b = E NA +E C. 3 : Minimize this energy with respect to the parameters. But keep ρ = net instanton number per 3D volume fixed. Watch out for parameter degeneration like ǫ 0. The lowest-energy solution is a winner.
ADHM DATA For SU(2), a K instanton self-dual solution is parametrized by a K K quaternionic matrix Γ and a quaternionic K vector Y. The diagonal matrix elements Γ ii encode the locations of the instanton centers in 4D space, the Y k encode instanton sizes and SU(2) orientations, and the offdiagonal matrix elements Γ i j follow from the constraint ( ) Im Γ Γ + Y Y = 0. Given Γ ij and Y i satisfying this constraint, the local instanton density is where L is a real K K matrix I(x) = 1 16π 2 logdet ( L(x) ) L(x) = ( Γ x µ q µ ) ( Γ x µ q µ ) + Y Y. (The q µ are unit quaternions1,i,j,k, or in SU(2) notations 1,iτ 1,iτ 2,iτ 3.)
Warm up: an infinite 1D instanton lattice (a straight chain) along x 1 axis. Lattice symmetry Z = Y j+i = UY j for some fixed U SU(2). Let U = exp( i 2 φ n τ), then Y j = aexp( i 2 jφ n τ). Also, lattice symmetry = Γ jj = jdq 1 (D = lattice spacing) while Γ j k = ˆΓ(j konly). Constraint = Γ j k = q 1 (i n τ) a2 D sin((j k)φ/2) (j k). L is an infinite matrix = need to regularize det(l) = messy analytic formula by Kraan and van Baal = messier formula for the I(x). For a D the instantons are well-separated and nearly spherical. For a D the instantons merge, the I(x) does not depend on x 1, in the other 3 dimensions I(x) concentrates at two points very far apart (distance = πa 2 /D).
The non-abelian energy can be calculated exactly: ( a E NA = λn c Mm 3 2 ) 2 + φ(2π φ)n2 z a4 4D 2. No exact formula for the Coulomb energy, but for D a E C N ( c 1 λm m 5a 2 + 4π2 +(π φ) 2 ) 30D 2 + O(a 2 /D 4 ) The net energy E C +E NA of the chain is minimized for φ = π = antiferromagnetic order of the isospins (true any D).
Next configuration: the zigzag INSTANTON ZIGZAG We restrict instanton centers to X 2 = X 3 = 0 by making gauge coupling depend on x 2,3 : 8π 2 ( ) g 2 (x,z) = λn cm m 1+Mm z 2 2 +M 2 (x 2 2 +x 2 3), M M m At low densities, the instantons lie along the x 1 axis. At higher densities, they push each other away from the axis into another dimension z for M > M m = transition to zigzag. Side effect of M M m : the instantons become smaller then the lattice spacing the transition point a (λm m M ) 1/2, while D crit (λm 2 m) 1/2 a which simplifies calculating the ADHM data and the energy.
Zigzag Symmetry: Odd and even links have similar lengths but different directions in the (x 1,z) plane = relative SU(2) orientations of nearest-neighbor instantons may have similar symmetry: Y 2n+1 = U o Y 2n while Y 2n+2 = U e Y 2n+1 where U o = exp ( i 2 φ n 0 τ ) and U e = exp ( i 2 φ n e τ ) are SU(2) rotations through the same angle φ but in different directions. In infinite 2D or 3D instanton lattices we expect the twists U between neighboring instantons to have different SU(2) directions for different link directions in space. A zigzag with U o U e would show the formation of such non-abelian 2D lattice structure already at the 2-layer level.
Instanton centersformazigzagwithx 1 spacingd andz-amplitudeǫ = Γ nn = Dnq 1 + ǫ( 1) n q z. Theoff-diagonalmatrixelementsΓ m n followfromtheadhmequations. We have an exact formula for the solution only for the abelian zigzags with n o = n e ; for the non-abelian zigzags with n o n e, we expand Γ m n in powers of a 2 /D 2. ( ) Calculating det reg L(x) = I(x1,x 2,x 3,z) = E NA +E C : Again, we expand everything in powers of (a/d) 2 (M m /M ) 1, but even the leading non-trivial order is rather hard. Result: E zigzag M b as a function of parameters D,ǫ,φ, n o, n e to leading order in M m /M.
Next, we minimize the zigzag energy WRT the SU(2) twist parameters φ, n o, n e while keeping the lattice spacing D and the zigzag amplitude ǫ fixed. Bad news: The abelian zigzag with n o = n e = Im(q z /q 1 ) always wins over all the non-abelian zigzags. Good news: The optimal twist angle φ depends on the ǫ/d ratio: Φ Π Π 2 1 Ε d For (ǫ/d) < 0.38 the winner is the antiferromagnetic φ = π. For larger ǫ/d ratios, smaller twists φ < π yield lower energies. In the un-realistic limit ǫ D, the best twist asymptotes to π/2.
Finally, we minimize the energy WRT to the zigzag amplitude ǫ. Surprisingly, there are two separate phase transitions as we increase the density ρ = 1/D: Second-order transition at ρ c1 = from straight chain to zigzag. First order transition at ρ c2 = from φ = π to φ 0.64π. E,ǫ,φ π twist angle φ energy E π/2 zigzag amplitude ǫ ρ c1 ρ c2 ρ
OPEN QUESTIONS Working out the transitions from two 1D layers the zigzag to more layers. Do we net non-abelian n 1 n 2 for 3 or 4 layers? Solving ADHM equations for 3D instanton lattice(s). It would be interesting to compare instanton lattices to skyrmion lattices using the Atiyah Manton relation (1989): + U skyrmions (x) = P-exp i dza instantons z (x, z) Can we get Klebanov s or Kugler-Shtrikman half-skyrmion lattices from the instantons?
Ultimately, we want to see the instantons popping from 3D into the fourth dimension.
