For these values of b the connection formula that represents Ua,b,z as a linear combination of two F -functions needs a limiting procedure. We use the power series of the F -functions and consider the terms for which this limiting procedure is needed. We give recursion relations for higher terms in the expansion, and we consider the derivative U a,b,z as well. We also discuss the performance for small z of an asymptotic approximation of the Kummer function in terms of modified Bessel functions Mathematics Subject Classification: 33B5, 33C5, 65D20. 2 algorithms are available for the computation of any of the standard solutions of the Kummer equation in the case of real or complex parameters; see for example [7, 8] for the computation of Ma,b,x. In this paper we describe a method for computing the Kummer function Ua,b,z for small values of z, a and b by using a simple expansion of a function in terms of reciprocal gamma functions. To compute the Kummer function Ua,b,z for small values of z, the connection formulas for this function in terms of the F -functions is the most obvious starting point. When also small values of the b-parameter are allowed, special care is needed because certain terms in these formulas will become singular, although the limit for b 0 will exist. In case b = 0 the power series expansion of Ua, b, z will contain a logarithmic term. This phenomenon occurs as well for positive integer values of b, but when the case for b = 0 is under control, we can use stable recursions [0] to handle b =,2,3,... It should also be noted that, for numerical evaluations with fixed precision, the power series expansions can only be used for rather small positive values of z, say, for 0 < z. This is due to the behaviour of the F -functions, which become exponentially large as z +, whereas the U-function is only of algebraic growth in that case. With the coefficients provided by the expansion in terms of reciprocal gamma functions, we can safely compute the function Ua,b,z and its z-derivative in double precision for 0 < z, a 2, b 2.. This computational method complements others described in [3], where the computation of the confluent hypergeometric function Ua, b, z is considered in other complementary parameter domains. In the paper we also consider an asymptotic approximation of the Kummer function Ua,b,z in terms of modified K-Bessel functions and discuss its numerical performance for small z. An analysis of the stability of the recurrence relations satisfied by the coefficients of the expansion is provided as well as few tests illustrating its behaviour. 2 Power series expansions for small z We use the representation see [9, Eqn. 3.2.E4] Ua,b,z = Γ b a Γa b+ F b ; z + z b Γb a b+ F ; z Γa 2 b 2. and the form Ua,b,z = π sinπb F a;b;z F a b+;2 b;z ΓbΓa b+ z b ΓaΓ2 b. 2.2 These connection formulas are not defined for integer values of b, although the limit exists for, say, b 0. 2
We assume z 0 and b / Z. We expand the F -functions and obtain Ua,b,z = Γ b Γa b+ + πbz sinπbγaγa b+ m=0 w m z m m!, 2.3 where w m = u m v m, u m = A m B m /b, A m = Γm+Γ2 b+mγa+m+, B m = z b Γa b++mγb++mγm+2, 2.4 v m = Γm+2Γb+m+Γ2 b+m. The u m are well defined in the limit b 0, but for numerical computations we need a stable representation of w m. We derive such a representation that we can use for values of a and b in the interval [ 2, 2 ]. For other a-values we need a few recursion steps when this parameter is not too large. For recursion with respect to b, we refer to 2.3. We concentrate on w 0 ; other values w m follow from stable recursions when b is small. Namely, it is easily verified that u m+ = a m A m b m B m /b = a m u m +d m B m, d m = a m b m /b, 2.5 where a m = c m m 2 +a+2m+a+b, b m = c m +m+2a bb, c m = m+m+2m+a+, 2.6 d m = m 2 +2ma++3a++m+2b. Theorem 4.7 of [5] can be used to check that {u m } is a dominant solution of 2.5, which means that when we have a stable representation of u m, we can computeu m+ in astablewayasb 0. Therecursionforv m is straightforward, with starting value 2. Computing the derivative v 0 = Γb+Γ2 b = bπb sinπb. 2.7 For the derivative of Ua,b,z we obtain from 2.3 U a,b,z = πb sinπbγaγa b+ 3 m=0 wm d z m m!, 2.8
where wm d = m+w m +zw m. 2.9 For w m we need, using 2.4, u m = z B m, 2.0 for which we do not need further analysis. 2.2 Computing the first term w 0 Following the ideas described in [], we introduce the function Ga,b = b Γa++b. 2. Γa+ The reciprocal gamma function is an entire function, and we have the expansion Γz = c k z k, z <, 2.2 k= where c =, c 2 = γ, and the rest of the coefficients satisfy see [, 5.7] k c k = γc k ζ2c k 2 +ζ3c k k ζk c, k 3, 2.3 where γ is Euler s constant and ζz denotes the ζ-function. See Table ; for 3D values see [7]. For Ga, b defined in 2. we have the representation Ga,b = c k d k, d k = a+b k a k, 2.4 b k=2 which we use for a and b in the interval [ 2, 2 ], or for complex values with modulus not exceeding 2. We have d 2 =, d 3 = 2a + b, and the recurrence relation d k+2 = 2a+bd k+ aa+bd k, k. 2.5 For a few recursion steps we can use the relations a+a+b+ga+,b = a+ga,b Γa+, a+2a+b+2ga+2,b = 2a+b+3Ga+,b Ga,b. 2.6 In this case, Theorems 4.6 and 4.7 of [5] are inconclusive with respect to the existence of minimal solutions for these recurrences for Ga, b. For w 0 we have bw 0 = Γa+ Γb+ z bγa b Γ2 b 4

We have Γa+ Γa b+ = bγa+ga, b, Γ+b = +bg0,b, 2.9 Γ2 b = b bg0, b. and obtain Γa+ w 0 = b bγa+ga, b Γa+ b +bg0,b Ga, b + +b G0,b G0, b+ z b bg0, b. b When we use an expansion for z b b 2.20 = lnz e blnz, 2.2 blnz for small values of blnz, we have obtained a representation for w 0 in which we can allow small values of b. To start the recursion for u m given in 2.5 we use u 0 = v 0 w 0 with v 0 given in
In [] the function Γ ǫ z = ǫ Γz +ǫ Γz is considered for small values of ǫ. In our notation we have 2.22 Γ ǫ z = Γz +ǫgz,ǫ Skorokhodov introduced this function for the computation of the Gauss hypergeometric function 2 F a,b;c;z, where for certain values of the parameters a, b and c numerical problems arise. Because Skorokhodov needs the evaluation of Γ ǫ z for general complex values of z, more details and expansions are considered in []. For other papers on the computation of the 2 F -function with attention to the computation of functions like Γ ǫ z and Ga,b, we refer to [3] and [4] 2.3 Positive integer values of b When we have control of the computations for small values of b, we can obtain the functions Ua,b + k,z without further extra analysis, although the connection formulas in 2. and 2.2 cannot be used for b Z. We have the relations Ua,b+,z = Ua,b,z U a,b,z, zu a,b+,z = bu a,b,z aua,b,z, 2.24 and we conclude that, when b is small, to obtain the values on the left sides no special limits are needed, once we have Ua,b,z and its derivative. In addition, when a, b and z are positive, we have U a,b,z < 0, and the recursion is perfectly stable. For more computational aspects of the recursion with respect to b, we refer to [3]. 2.4 Computing Ga, b by quadrature Because /Γz is an entire function, we can write the function Ga,b defined in 2. in the form Ga,b = dz 2πi Γz + z az a b, 2.25 C where C is a closed contour that encircles the points z = a and z = a + b clockwise, say a circle around the origin with radius r > max a, a+b. Using such a circle, we can write Ga,b = 2π π π Γz dθ z az a b, z = reiθ As explained in [5, 5.2.3] and [6], the trapezoidal rule gives excellent results in a quadrature algorithm. For an efficient code, we can precompute the values of /Γz in a set of equidistant nodes on the circle with radius r. 6
Table 2: Relative errors in the relation in 2.27 for a = 0.2 and b = 0 2k, k = 5, and two complex values of z. k z = i z = +i 0.5e e e e e e e e e-4 0.e A numerical test For a numerical test we have verified the relation Ua,b,z = a b+zua,b,z zu a,b,z 2.27 for a = 0.2 and a few values of z and b = 0 2k, k = 5. In Table 2 we give the relative error in this relation. We have used a Maple code with Digits=6 and the coefficients in Table ; we stop the summation of the series in 2.3 and 2.8 when the absolute values of the terms are less than 0 6. For z = i about 5 terms are needed, for z = +i about 20. Because of the strong relation between the terms in the series, the evaluation of the series is done together. 3 Asymptotic representation in terms of modified Bessel functions Our starting point is the representations for a large given in [5, 0.3] and where z 2 Ua,b,z = 2 a b e 2 z Γa K b 2 az Aa z,b+ a Γb F b ; z = I b 2 az Aa z,b A a z,b z a K b 2 az Ba z,b, z a 2 b Γ+a be 2 z z a I b a k z a k, B az,b Γa 2 az Ba z,b, b k z, a, 3.3 ak 7
valid for bounded values of z and b. The coefficients of these expansions can be computed by a simple scheme. Let c fz,s = e zgs s e s, gs = s e s The function f is analytic in the strip Is < 2π and it can be expanded for s < 2π into fz,s = c k zs k. 3.5 Then, the coefficients a k z and b k z of 3.3 are given by a k z = b k z = k k m m=0 k k m m=0 3. Slater s results for large a m+ b k m z m c k+m z, m+2 b k m z m c k+m+ z. 3.6 Slater s asymptotic expansions of the Kummer functions for large a are given in [2, 4.6.], and are in terms of the large parameter a written in the form a = 4 u2 + b, where u > 0 if a and b are real with a > 2b. For programming purposes we have simple recurrence relations for the coefficients in the asymptotic expansions. Slater s results for large a are written in the form and 2 e 2 a z2 z b F b ; z2 Γbu b 2 b A k z zi b uz u 2k + z u I buz e 2 z2 z b U a,b,z 2 zk b uz The coefficients are given by A 0 = and B k z = 2 A k z+ z 0 2 b u b Γ+a b A k+ z = b 2B k z 2 B kz+ 2 A k z u 2k z u K buz B k z u 2k, B k z u 2k. 2 t2 A k t b 2A k t t dt, z t 2 B k tdt+k k, Corrected form of [5, Eq ]. 2 Slater s result for the U-function contains an error; see [4] and [5, 0.3.6]
and K k is chosen so that A k+ z 0 as z 0. In fact, A 0 z =, B 0 z = 6 z3, A z = 6 b 2z z6, B z = 3 bb 2z 5 z z9, A 2 z = 20 5b 2b+2z b 52z z2, B 2 z = 90 5b 2b+2b+z b2 350b 896z z z5. 4 Convergent expansions based on the asymptotic representation We consider again the representation given in 3., but instead of using asymptotic expansions of A a z,b and B a z,b in negative powers of a, we expand A a z,b = α k a,bz k, B a z,b = β k a,bz k, 4. where the coefficients follow from the recurrence equations k { αk = 2bα k +4k +k +bα k+ 42k+β k, β k = 2bβ k +4k +k +2 bβ k+ 8ak +α k+. These follow from the system of differential equations { 4zA +4bA 8zB +2b za 4B = 0, 4zB +42 bb 8aA +2b zb = 0, which can be obtained by applying Kummer s differential equation to the representations in 3. and 3.2. By solving 3. and 3.2 for the A- and B-functions, and replacing the K-Bessel functions by I-Bessel functions, we find that A a z,b and B a z,b are entire functions of z. Hence, the series in 4. converge for all finite z. First values are α 0 = a b Γa Γa+ b, α = α 0 β 0 = aα 0 b b 2 b+2a 2a, 2b b, β = a α 0 4a 2b+b 2 4a+b 2. 2bb b These values are well defined for b = 0,,2. 9
For large a we can use [5, Eq ] for α 0 and we see that β 0 = + O/a. From a few Maple experiments, we see that a set of other coefficients in the expansions in 4. are O/a, and it is likely that we should not use forward recursion, when a is large. We can change the mixed recursions in 4.2 into two recursion for α k and β k. We have k 3 p 3 α k 3 +p 2 α k 2 +p α k +p 0 α k +p α k+ = 0, q 3 β k 3 +q 2 β k 2 +q β k +q 0 β k +q β k+ = 0, where p 3 = 2k 2k+, 4.5 p 2 = 8b2k+k, p = 8+4b+8k 2 +24k 64k 3 +32k 4 +2b 2 6kb+6bk 2 6k 2 b 2 +6kb 2, p 0 = 6k2k 38ak 2 2bk 2 b 2 2a+b, p = 6k2k 2k 3k +k +b k +b, and q 3 = k, 4.6 q 2 = 2b2k, q = 4k 2k 2 +b 2, 4.7 q 0 = 8k2k+k 4a b, q = 6kk k +k +bk +2 b. In order to decide which of the directions of recursion is stable if any, it is important to study the possible existence of minimal solutions. A simple tool that can be used is the Perron-Kreuser theorem [6] see for instance [2] for a more recent account of this important result, which in some cases gives simple answers to this question. This is not the case here, however. To see this, first we notice that the coefficients of the recurrence behave as k + as follows: q 6k 5, q 0 64a bk 3, q 8k 3, q 2 4bk, q 3 k. 4.8 The coefficients p i have similar behaviour, and we have p i 4kq i as k +. Considering the Newton-Pusieux diagram corresponding to this asymptotic behaviour, we conclude that all the solutions β k of the recurrence relation satisfy: lim supk! β k /k = k + 2, 4.9 where the constant 2 is the absolute value of the degenerate solutions of the characteristic equation 6λ 4 8λ 2 + = 0, and the coefficients in this equation 0
b=0. b=0.4 b= Rel error 0 6 Rel error 0 6 Rel error za za za Figure : Relative errors in the computation of Ua, b, z using the expansions of 4. with a fixed number N = 20 of α k and β k coefficients for computing A a z,b, B a z,b in 3.4. come from the coefficients q, q and q 3. The same result is true for α k. This is all the information the Perron-Kreuser theorem gives in this case; it is not possible to infer the existence of minimal solutions only with this result. A scaling of the sequences α k and β k in order to minimize the risk of overflow/underflow in the recurrence can be used, by defining α k = k!2 k α k and similarly for the β k s. Numerical experiments show that for small a, the forward computation appears to be stable while for large a this is no longer true. Although, the Perron-Kreuser theorem does not give information on the existence of minimal solutions in this case, it is possible to test numerically the existence of minimal solution. One can start the recurrence with large values of k and arbitrarily chosen starting values, apply the recurrence in the backward direction and check whether the same value α /α 0 or β /β 0 is obtained irrespectively of the initial values. If this is the case, this means that a minimal solution must exist. We have checked this fact for several sets of starting values and values of the parameters and it seems that such a minimal solution exists; however, it does not appear to be the requested solution because the values do not correspond to 4.4. Therefore, backward recurrence does not seem to be of help. Contrarily, there is a range of variables for which the the forward recurrence yields correct results for the expansions. For instance, when z <, b < where the b- values should be neither too close to 0 nor to we obtain an accuracy close to double precision or better for values of the product za smaller than 0 for computing the U function, as illustrated in Figure. In this figure we show, for three values of the b parameter, the relative errors in the computation of
