We nvestgate theoretcally the low-temperature physcs of a twocomponent ultracold mxture of bosons and fermons n dsordered optcal lattces. We focus on the strongly correlated regme. We show that, under specfc condtons, composte fermons, made of one fermon plus one bosonc hole, form. The composte pcture s used to derve an effectve Hamltonan whose parameters can be controlled va the boson-boson and the boson-fermon nteractons, the tunnelng terms and the nhomogenetes. We fnally nvestgate the quantum phase dagram of the composte fermons and we show that t corresponds to the formaton of Ferm glasses, spn glasses, and quantum percolaton regmes. 2 Strongly correlated Ferm-Bose mxtures n dsordered optcal lattces 2 1. Introducton to dsordered quantum systems 1.1. From condensed matter physcs to ultracold atomc gases Quantum dsordered systems s a very actve research feld n condensed matter physcs (CM) ntated by the work by P.W. Anderson [1] who frst ponted out that quenched (.e. tme-ndependent) dsorder can dramatcally change the propertes of a quantum system compared to ts long-range ordered counterpart. Hence, dsorder plays a central role n modern sold state physcs as t can sgnfcantly alter electronc normal conductvty [2], superconductvty [3] and the magnetc [4, 5] propertes of drty alloys. It s by now clear that studyng dsordered systems s comparable to openng the Pandora box. On the one hand, dsorder ntroduces a lst of non-neglgble dffcultes. Frst, averagng over dsorder usually turns out to be a complex task that requres ether orgnal methods such as the replca trck [4] and supersymmetry [6] or numercal computatons usng huge samples or a large number of repettons wth dfferent confguratons. Second, the possble exstence of a huge number of excted states wth nfntely small exctaton energes leads to complex quantum phases such as bose glasses [7] or spn glasses [4]. Thrd, the nterplay of knetc energy, partcle-partcle nteractons and dsorder s usually a non-trval problem [8] whch s stll challengng. On the other hand, dsorder leads to an extraordnary varety of physcal phenomena such as, for example, Anderson localzaton [1], quantum percolaton [9], or quantum frustraton [10]. Studes of quantum dsorder n CM have several lmtatons. Frst, the dsorder cannot be controlled as t s fxed by the specfc realzaton of the sample. In partcular, one cannot swtch adabatcally from one confguraton to another. Second, the partcles are fermons (electrons) and the nter-partcle nteracton corresponds to the Coulomb long-range potental. Thrd, theoretcal studes rely on toy models and experments do not provde control parameters. Thus, t would be hghly desrable to consder new knds of dsordered quantum systems. As shown n ths work and also dscussed n other papers [11, 12], one exctng possblty s that of ultracold atomc gases where these problems can be revsted wth unque parameters control and measurements possbltes Ultracold atomc gases Followng the recent progress n coolng and trappng of neutral atoms [13], dlute atomc Bose-Ensten condensates (BEC) [14], degenerate Ferm gases (DFG) [15] and mxtures of both [16] are now currently produced at the laboratory. In these systems almost all parameters prove to be hghly controllable [17]: () Usng standard technques, one can easly control the trappng potental, the sze, the densty and the temperature of the atomc gas. () Due to the strong dluton, the contact nteractons are usually small and can be computed ab nto. In addton, ther sgn and strength can be controlled usng Feshbach resonances [18]. () Quantum statstcs s also a degree of freedom as one can use bosons or fermons. (v) Fnally, nhomogeneous trappng potentals
3 Strongly correlated Ferm-Bose mxtures n dsordered optcal lattces 3 can be desgned almost at wll usng standard optcal technques. In partcular, perodc potentals (optcal lattces) wth no defect nor phonons can be desgned n a wde varety of geometres [19]. Controlled dsordered [20] or quas-dsordered [21, 22] potentals can also be optcally produced openng new possbltes. Hence, equlbrum and transport propertes of nteractng Bose-Ensten condensates n random potentals have been nvestgated n recent experments [23, 24, 25]. In recent works [12, 26], we have shown that Ferm-Bose mxtures n an optcal lattce wth dagonal (.e. wth random on-ste energy) randomness consttute a case study of quantum dsordered systems. In the strongly correlated regme (strong nteractons), the dynamcs reduces to a unversal effectve Hamltonan whose parameters can be controlled through the boson-boson and fermon-boson nteractons, or the depth of the perodc and dsordered potentals. It results n a rch quantum phase dagram rangng from Ferm glasses and Ferm Anderson localzaton to quantum spn glasses and quantum percolaton [12]. Ths paper revews our works on strongly correlated Ferm-Bose mxtures n dsordered optcal lattces. It further detals the results dscussed n Ref. [12]. In Ref. [26], we have presented a complete study of the system and dscussed a wde varety of cases, ncludng several composte types and quantum phases. As n such a rch system, completeness competes wth concseness, we thnk that a shorter revew would be useful for non-specalst readers. It s the am of ths paper to provde such a concse revew of our fndngs. We have thus chosen to restrct the present analyss to a specfc case that proves to be non the less paradgmatc but also one of the rchest ones. For more detals, the nterested reader should refer to Ref. [26]. The paper s organzed as follows. In secton 2, we ntroduce the model descrbng the consdered system (2.1) and the composte fermons formalsm that leads to the effectve hamltonan (2.2 and 2.3). Secton 3 shows the results for the non-dsordered and weakly dsordered lattces and n secton 4 the strong dsorder lmt, the spn glass lmt, s dscussed. Fnally, we summarze and dscuss our results n secton 5 2. Strongly correlated composte fermons n nhomogeneous optcal lattces 2.1. The Ferm-Bose Hubbard Hamltonan Consder a mxture of ultracold bosons (b) and spnless (or spn-polarzed) fermons (f) trapped n an optcal lattce. In addton, the mxture s subjected to on-ste nhomogenetes consstng n a harmonc confnng potental and/or n dagonal dsorder. Eventually, the perodc potental and the nhomogenetes are dfferent for the bosons and the fermons. However, we assume that the lattces for the two speces have the same perodcty. The lattce stes are ndexed by and are thus the same for the fermons and the bosons. In all cases consdered below, the temperature s assumed to be low enough and the potental wells deep enough so that only quantum states n the fundamental Bloch bands for both the bosons and the fermons are populated. Notce
4 Strongly correlated Ferm-Bose mxtures n dsordered optcal lattces 4 that, ths requres that the fllng factor for fermons ρ f s smaller than 1.e. the total number of fermons N f s smaller than the total number of lattce stes N. We use the Wanner bass of the fundamental Bloch band whch corresponds to wave-functons well localzed n each lattce ste [27] for both the bosons and the fermons. Ths bass s partcularly well suted for the strongly correlated regme that s nvestgated here [28]. Then, the second quantzaton Hamltonan reduces to the Ferm-Bose Hubbard (FBH) model [3, 5, 29] : H FBH = [ ] J b b b j + J f f f j + h.c. j + [ ] V 2 n (n 1) + Un m (1) + [ µ b n µ f ] m where b and f are bosonc and fermonc annhlaton operators of a partcle n the -th ste and n = b b, m = f f are the correspondng on-ste number operators. The FBH model descrbes: () nearest neghbor boson (fermon) hoppng, wth an assocated negatve energy, J b ( J f ); () on-ste boson-boson nteractons wth an energy V, whch s supposed to be postve (.e. repulsve) n the remnder of the paper; () on-ste boson-fermon nteractons wth an energy U, whch s postve (negatve) for repulsve (attractve) nteractons; (v) on-ste energy due to nteractons wth a possbly nhomogeneous potental, wth energes µ b and µ f. Eventually, µb and µ f also contan the chemcal potentals n grand canoncal descrpton. In the followng, we nvestgate the propertes of the strong couplng regme,.e. V, U J b,f and we derve a one-speces effectve Hamltonan usng a perturbatve development up to second order n J b,f /V Zeroth-order perturbaton: formaton of fermon compostes In the lmt of a vanshng hoppng (J b = J f = 0) wth fnte repulsve boson-boson nteracton V, and n the absence of nteractons between bosons and fermons (U = 0), the bosons are pnned n the lattce stes wth exactly ñ = µ b + 1 bosons per ste, where µ b = µ b /V and x denotes the nteger part of x. For smplcty, we assume ñ = 1 for all stes so that the boson system s n the Mott nsulator (MI) phase wth 1 boson per ste. In contrast, the fermons can be n any set of Wanner states, snce for a vanshng tunnelng, the energy of the system does not depend on the dstrbuton of the fermons n dfferent lattce stes for the homogeneous optcal lattce and wll be very smlar for the dfferent reparttons of fermons n the case of small dsorder. Assume now that the boson-fermon nteracton s turned on postve (U > 0) and defne α = U/V. The presence of a fermon n ste may expel s = 0 or 1 boson dependng on the nteracton strength. The on-ste energy gan n expellng s boson from ste s E = V s(s 1) Us + µb 2 s. Mnmzng E versus s, we fnd that
5 Strongly correlated Ferm-Bose mxtures n dsordered optcal lattces 5 s = α µ b + 1 that we assume to be 1 n all stes. Wthn the occupaton number bass, exctatons correspond to havng 1 boson n a ste wth a fermon, nstead of 0 boson and, therefore, the correspondng exctaton energy s U. In the followng, we assume that the temperature s smaller than U so that the populatons of the above mentoned exctatons can be neglected. Summarzng the dscusson above, we have assumed that 0 < µ b < V (so that ñ = 1), U V < µ b < U (so that n the lowest energy states, each lattce ste s populated by ether one boson or one fermon but never 0 or 2 partcles), and k B T < U (so that only these lowest energy states are sgnfcantly populated). The physcs of our Ferm-Bose mxture can thus be regarded as the one of composte partcles made of one fermon plus one bosonc hole. Notce that the bosonc hole s created because the ntally present boson s expelled from the ste by the fermon, due to the repulsve nteractons between bosons and fermons. Wthn the pcture of compostes, a lattce ste s ether populated by one composte (.e. by one fermon plus bosonc hole) or free of composte (.e. populated by one boson). In partcular, the vacuum state corresponds to the MI phase wth 1 boson per ste. The annhlaton and creaton operators of the compostes are [30]: F = b f P (2) F = Pf b (3) where P s the projector onto the sub-hlbert space of the compostes. straghtforward to show that F and F are fermonc operators Second-order perturbaton: effectve Hamltonan It s The sub-hlbert space of the compostes s [N!/(N f )!(N N f )!]-dmensonal, a number that corresponds to the number of possbltes to dstrbute the N f fermons nto the N lattce stes. We assume now that the tunnelng rates J b and J f are small but fnte. For weak enough dsorder, one can assume ste ndependent tunnelng rates for bosons and fermons [11]. Usng second order projecton perturbaton theory [31], we derve an effectve Hamltonan for the fermonc compostes by means of a untary transform appled to the total Hamltonan (1). The general expresson of the effectve Hamltonan can be wrtten as: out H eff n = out H 0 n + out PH nt P n (4) 1 [ ] 2 out PH 1 1 ntq + QH nt P n. H 0 E n H 0 E out where Q = 1 P s the complement of the projecton operator P. As second order theory can only connect states that dffer on one set of two adjacent stes, H eff can only contan nearest-neghbor hoppng and nteractons as well as on-ste energes µ [12]: [ ] d,j F F j + h.c. µ M (5) H eff =,j +,j K,j M M j +
6 Strongly correlated Ferm-Bose mxtures n dsordered optcal lattces 6 where F and F are defned n Eqs. (2-3) and M = F F s the composte number operator n lattce ste. Although the general form of Hamltonan (5) s unversal for all types of compostes, the explct calculaton of the coeffcents d,j, K,j and µ depends on the concrete type of compostes that can be created for dfferent values and sgn of alpha [26]. The nearest neghbor hoppng for the compostes s descrbed by d,j and the nearest neghbor composte-composte nteracton s gven by K,j, whch may be repulsve (> 0) or attractve (< 0). Ths effectve model s equvalent to that of spnless nteractng fermons [3]. In the stuaton under consderaton, each ste contans ether one boson or one fermon. Therefore, a fermon jump from ste to ste j can only occur f the boson that was ntally n ste j jumps back to ste nto the hole the fermon leaves behnd. Therefore, the number operator for fermons and bosons are related to the number operator of compostes,.e. M = m = 1 n. From Eq. (4), we fnd d j = J b J ( ) f α V α 2 ( b + α j )2 α 2 ( f (6) j )2 K j = J2 b V J2 f V ( ) 4 1 ( b 2α j )2 α 2 ( b j ( ) )2 2α α 2 ( f j )2 [ ] µ = µ b µ f + J2 b 4 V,j 1 ( b 1 j )2 α b j [ ] J2 f 1 V α + f j,j wth f,b j = µ f,b µ f,b j measures the nhomogenety of the lattce stes. Here,, j represents all stes j adjacent to ste. The couplng parameters n Hamltonan (5) depend on all parameters (J b, J f, U, V, µ b, µf ) of the FBH model (1) n a complex fashon. For example, the hoppng ampltudes d,j depend on dsorder but always reman postve. In contrast, the nteracton term K,j can be postve or negatve. All terms d,j, K,j, µ are random due to the nhomogeneous on-ste energes µ b and µ f of the bosons and the fermons respectvely. It s thus clear that the qualtatve character of nteractons may be controlled by the nhomogenetes [12]. For example, consder the case where dsorder only apples to the bosons (µ f = cst, unform) [32]. The correspondng couplng parameters are plotted n Fg. 1. As mentoned above, the hoppng ampltudes d j are always postve, although may vary qute sgnfcantly wth dsorder, especally when b j α. As shown n Fg. 1, for α > 1, K j 0 and we deal wth attractve (although random) nteractons. For α < 1, K j 0 and the nteractons between compostes are repulsve. For α < 1, but close to 1, K j mght take postve or negatve values for b j small or b j α. (7) (8)

(color onlne) Tunnelng, d j, and nearest neghbor nteractons K j between the fermon compostes as a functon of the dsorder of bosons b j for varous bosonfermon nteractons α. The dsorder for fermons s assumed to vansh here (µ f = 0). In the followng two sectons, we nvestgate the ground state propertes of the Ferm-Bose mxture (or equvalently that of the fermon compostes) n the presence of dagonal dsorder. We dstngush two lmtng cases. The frst corresponds to small dsorder whle the second corresponds to (b),j α that nterestngly maps to a spn glass problem. 3. Quantum phase dagrams of Ferm-Bose mxtures n weakly dsordered optcal lattces The frst lmtng case correspondng to weak dsorder ( (f,b),j 1, α) s nvestgated n ths secton. For the sake of smplcty, we use J b = J f = J. In ths lmt, the
8 Strongly correlated Ferm-Bose mxtures n dsordered optcal lattces 8 contrbutons of the nhomogenetes b,f j to the tunnelng d j and to the nteracton K j terms n the effectve composte Hamltonan (5) can be neglected (d j d and K j K) and we keep only the leadng dsorder contrbuton n µ [frst term n Eq. (8)]. Note, that the latter contrbuton s partcularly relevant n 1D and 2D leadng to Anderson localzaton of sngle partcles [33]. We wll frst descrbe the non-dsordered case and then we wll dscuss the effect of weak dsorder. The analyss reported below s supported by mean-feld numercal calculatons (for detals about the numercal method, see n Ref. [26]). We consder a 2D optcal lattce wth N = 100 stes wth N b = 60 bosons, N f = 40 fermons and J b /V = J f /V = 0.02 to compute the ground state of the system n the presence of a very shallow harmonc trappng potental (µ b,f = ω b,f l() 2, where l() s the dstance from ste to the center n cell sze unts) wth eventually dfferent ampltudes for bosons and fermons. Ths smulates optcal or magnetc trappng whch turns out to be hardly avodable n current experments on ultracold atoms. In addton, t breaks the equvalence of all lattce stes and makes more obvous the dfferent phases that one can acheve (see below). In the numercs, we have used ω b = 10 7 and ω f = In the absence of nteractons between the bosons and the fermons (α = 0), the bosons are well nsde the MI phase wth ñ = 1 boson per ste n the center of the trap [7, 28]. Besdes, the non-nteractng fermons are delocalzed and due to the very small value of ω f they do not feel sgnfcantly the confnng trap as shown n Fg. 2(a) Quantum phases n non-dsordered optcal lattces In the absence of dsorder, the physcs of the Ferm-Bose mxture s manly determned by the rato K/d and the sgn of K where K and d are ste ndependent parameters. Once the fermon compostes are created (α > µ b, see secton 2.2), we have K/d = 2(α 1) as a result of Eqs. (6-7) wth J b = J f = J and j = 0. We now dscuss the quantum phases that are accessble dependng on the control parameter α [34]. For µ b < α < 1, the nteractons between composte fermons are repulsve and of the same order of magntude as the tunnelng (K d). Therefore, the system enters an nteractng Ferm lqud quantum phase [see Fg. 2(b)]. The fermons are delocalzed over the entre lattce but populate preferably the center of the confnng trap. Small repulsve composte nteractons tend to flatten the densty profle compared to that of non-nteractng compostes (see Fg. 2 and text below). For α 1, although the nteractons between the bosons and the fermons are large, the nteractons between the fermon compostes vansh and the system shows up propertes of an deal Ferm gas [see Fg. 2(c)]. Agan, the fermons are delocalzed and ther dstrbuton follows the harmonc confnement.
9 Strongly correlated Ferm-Bose mxtures n dsordered optcal lattces g n=0,m=1 2 (a) 1.0 g n=0,m=1 2 (b) g n=0,m= (c) j g n=0,m= j (d) j j Fgure 2. Local on-ste probablty of fndng one fermon and zero boson at each lattce ste for the N = 100 lattce stes n a Ferm-Bose mxture wth N b = 60, N f = 40, J b /V = J f /V = 0.02 and n the presence of harmonc traps for bosons and fermons characterzed by ω b = 10 7 and ω f = , respectvely. The nteracton between fermons and bosons s (a) α = 0 [ndependent bosonc MI and Ferm gas], (b) α = 0.5 [Ferm lqud], (c) α = 1 [deal Ferm gas] and (d) α = 10 [fermonc nsulator doman]. Growng further the repulsve nteractons between bosons and fermons, the nteractons between the fermon compostes become attractve. For 1 < α < 2, one expects the system to be a weakly nteractng superflud, whereas for α > 2 a fermonc nsulator doman phase s predcted [see Fg. 2(d)]. In ths case, the fermons are pnned n the lattce stes. They tend to merge because of ste-to-ste attractve nteractons and populate the center of the trap.
10 Strongly correlated Ferm-Bose mxtures n dsordered optcal lattces 10 Notce that contrary to the bare fermons, the composte fermons are sgnfcantly affected by the harmonc trappng potental. Ths s because the couplng parameters of the composte effectve Hamltonan (5) are much smaller than the couplng parameters of the bare fermon-boson Hubbard Hamltonan (1). Therefore the harmonc potental s able to compete wth tunnelng and nteractons for the compostes [26] Quantum phases n dsordered optcal lattces We now assume that small on-ste nhomogenetes are present and we nvestgate the effect of dsorder on the quantum phase dagram of the system dependng on the parameters of the effectve Hamltonan (5). Fg. 3 shows a schematc representaton of expected dsordered phases of the fermonc compostes for small dsorder. Fgure 3. (color onlne) Schematc phase dagram of fermonc compostes for small dsorder ( b j 1, α) as a functon of the rato between nearest neghbor nteractons and tunnelng of the compostes (K/d). For K d, the system s n the Ferm glass phase,.e. Anderson localzed (and many-body corrected) sngle partcle states are occuped accordng to the Ferm-Drac statstcs [35]. The effect of dsorder s to localze the fermons preferably nto the deepest stes. For repulsve and large composte nteractons (K > 0 and K d), the ground state s a Ferm MI phase and the composte fermons are pnned at large fllng factors preferably nto the deepest wells. At half fllng factor (ρ f = 1/2), one expects the ground state to form a checker-board,.e. the lattce stes are alternatvely empty and populated by one composte.
11 Strongly correlated Ferm-Bose mxtures n dsordered optcal lattces 11 For large attractve composte nteractons (K < 0 and K d), the fermons form a doman nsulator whch average poston results from the competton between the random and the confnng potental. Fnally, for ntermedate values of K/d, wth K > 0, delocalzed metallc phases wth enhanced persstent currents are possble [36]. Smlarly, for attractve nteractons (K < 0) and K < d one expects a competton between parng of fermons and dsorder.e. a drty superflud phase. Further nformaton s provded by numercal computatons that we present now. We consder on-ste random nhomogenetes for the bosons µ b. We start from a nondsordered phase [ (t = 0) = 0] and we slowly ncrease the standard devaton of the dsorder ( µ b )2 ( µ b )2 = (t) from 0 to ts fnal value. We frst study the transton from a (composte) Ferm gas n the absence of dsorder [see Fg. 4(b)] to a (composte) Ferm glass [see Fg. 4(c)]. Intally [ (t) = 0], the composte fermons are delocalzed although confned near the center of the effectve harmonc potental [(ω f ω b ) l() 2 ]. The local populatons fluctuate around m 0.4 wth a standard devaton (m m ) Increasng the ampltude of dsorder, the fluctuatons of m decreases as shown n Fg. 4(a). Ths ndcates that the compostes localze more and more n the lattce stes to form a Ferm glass. For = , the composte fermons are pnned n random stes as shown n Fg. 4(c). As expected, the N f composte fermons populate the N f stes wth mnmal µ b. We now turn to the transton from a Ferm nsulator doman phase [see Fg. 5(b)] to a dsordered nsulatng phase whle slowly ncreasng the ampltude of the dsorder. For the Ferm nsulator doman, the composte fermons are pnned near the center of the harmonc trap and surrounded by a rng of delocalzed fermons whch results n fnte fluctuatons on the fermon occupaton number ( (m m ) ). As shown n Fg. 5(a), whle rampng up the ampltude of dsorder, the fluctuatons decrease down to (m m ) for > 10 4 showng that the composte fermons are pnned n dfferent lattce stes. Ths can be seen n the plot the ste populaton of the composte fermons presented n Fg. 5(c). Contrary to what happens for the transton from the Ferm gas to Ferm glass, the compostes mostly populate the central part of the confnng potental. Ths s because () the attractve nteracton between compostes s of the order of K and competes wth dsorder ( = ) and () because tunnelng s small (d ) so the fermons can hardly move durng the ramp of dsorder. 4. The spn glass lmt 4.1. From composte Hamltonans to spn glasses models The second lmt corresponds to a case where the nteractons between fermons and bosons are of the order of, but slghtly smaller than the nteractons between the bosons

As shown n Fg. 1, the effectve nteracton term K,j has a zero at large nhomogenetes b,j and vares strongly wth b,j reachng both postve to negatve values. Such a stuaton s accessble for ultracold atomc systems usng a superlattce wth a spatal perod twce as large as the lattce spacng plus a random potental, both actng on the bosons. The nteracton wth ths superlattce results n an alternatvely postve and negatve addtonal on-ste energy of the bosons, and whose ampltude s controlled by the ntensty of the superlattce. In partcular, one can set,j α. An addtonal weak random potental ntroduces dsorder. Due to the random on-ste effectve energy µ, the effectve tunnelng becomes nonresonant and can be neglected n frst approxmaton whle K,j s random wth a gven average (eventually zero) and strong fluctuatons from postve to negatve values. The effectve Hamltonan (5) then reduces to H EA = 1 K j s s j + 1 µ 4 2 s, (9) j where we have ntroduced s = 2M 1 = ±1. Interpretng s as classcal Isng spns [37], ths Hamltonan s equvalent to the well known Edwards-Anderson model [38]. Ths descrbes spn glasses,.e., a Isng model wth random postve (ant-ferromagnetc) or negatve (ferromagnetc) exchange terms K,j. Our system however dffers from the usual Edwards-Anderson spn glass model as () t has a random magnetc term µ and () the average magnetzaton per ste m = 2N f /N 1 s fxed by the total number of fermons n the lattce. It however shares basc characterstcs wth spn glasses as beng a spn Hamltonan wth random spn exchange terms K j. In partcular, ths provdes bond frustraton, whch s essental for the appearance of the spn glass phase and turns out to ntroduce severe dffcultes for analytcal and numercal analyses. We thus thnk that experments wth ultracold atoms can provde a useful quantum smulator to address challengng questons related to spn glasses such as the nature of the orderng of ts ground- and possbly metastable states [4, 39, 40], broken symmetry and dynamcs of spn glasses [5, 41]. In the followng two sectons, we outlne some general propertes of spn glasses and then we apply the replca method under the constrant of a fxed magnetzaton and argue that ths preserves the occurrence of a symmetry breakng characterstcs of spn glasses n the Mézard-Pars theory [4] Generaltes on spn glasses Consder a spn glass at fnte temperature wth a random exchange term K j wth average K and varance K. The magnetzaton s characterzed by two order parameters: () m = s, the average magnetzaton per ste and () q EA = s 2, the Edwards-Anderson parameter, where denotes the average over dsorder whle represents the thermodynamcs average. It s clear that m 0 sgnals a long-range magnetc order whle q EA 0 sgnals a local magnetzaton that may vary from ste to ste and from one confguraton of quenched dsorder to another.
15 Strongly correlated Ferm-Bose mxtures n dsordered optcal lattces 15 Fgure 6. Schematc phase dagram of a spnglass. Earler expermental studes have dentfed three magnetc phases as schematcally represented n Fg. 6 [42]: () At hgh temperature and small average spn exchange K, one fnds a paramagnetc phase characterzed by m = q EA = 0. () For K > 0 and large, one has a ferromagnet wth m 0 and q EA 0. () For weak K and small temperatures, a spn glass phase appears wth m = 0 but q EA 0. Ths sgnals that the local magnetzaton s frozen but that dsorder prevents a long-range magnetc order. As ponted out before, the physcs of spn glasses stll opens challengng questons. In partcular, there are competng theores that predct dfferent natures of the magnetc order. The droplet pcture s a phenomenologcal theory based on numercal and scalng arguments. It predcts that there are two ground states related by spn-flp symmetry and that low-lyng exctatons are domans wth fractal boundares (the droplets) wth all spns nversed compared to the groundstate. Ths theory s supported by numercal computatons and s beleved to be vald n short-range spn glass models such as the Edwards-Anderson [38]. The Mézard-Pars pcture predcts a large number of low-energy states wth very smlar energes. Ths leads n partcular to dsorder-nduced quantum frustraton. Ths theory s a mean-feld, based on the replca method whch s a specal trck ntroduced to compute the non-trval average over dsorder of the free energy functonal. The Mézard-Pars theory s formulated n long-range spn glasses such as the Sherrngton-
16 Strongly correlated Ferm-Bose mxtures n dsordered optcal lattces 16 Krkpartck model H S-K = 1 K j s s j + 1 µ 4 2 s, (10) (j) that dffers from the Edwards-Anderson model (9) by the long-range spn exchange [(j) denotes here the sum over all pars of lattce stes, ether neghbors or not]. The applcablty of the Mézard-Pars pcture to short-range spn glasses s stll controversal The replca-symmetrc soluton for fxed magnetzaton As the dsorder s quenched, one must average over dsorder the free energy densty, f = ln Z/k B usng the replca trck. In the followng we assume that the random varables K j and µ are Gaussan dstrbuted wth average K and h respectvely and standard devaton K and h respectvely. We form n dentcal copes of the system (the replcas) and the average s calculated for an nteger n and a fnte number of spns N. Then, usng the well-known formula ln x = lm n 0 (x n 1)/n, lnz s obtaned from the analytc contnuaton of Z n for n 0. Fnally, we take the thermodynamc lmt N. Explctly, Z n s gven by: Z n = ] [ H[s α, n] (11) s α =±1 exp where H[s α, n] s the sum of n ndependent and dentcal spn Hamltonans, averaged over the dsorder, wth Greek ndces now numberng the n replcas. Computng the average over dsorder leads to couplng between spn-spn-nteractons of dfferent replcas. After some analytcs that are detaled n [26], one fnally gets and f SK k B T = (K/k B T)2 (1 q) 2 ( h/k B T) dz e z 2 [ ] 2 K2 q + h ln 2 cosh 2 h 2π k B T q = m = dz e z 2 ( ) 2 tanh 2 K2 q + h 2 h 2π k B T dz e z 2 2 tanh 2π (12) (13) ( ) K2 q + h 2 h. (14) k B T These are characterstc values of spnglasses that may be measured n expermental realzatons of the proposed systems. Fnally, a study of stablty of the replca method as detaled n [26] shows that the magnetzaton constrant specfc to our model would not change the occurrence of replca symmetry breakng, provded the Mézard-Pars approach s vald n fnte range spn glass models.
17 Strongly correlated Ferm-Bose mxtures n dsordered optcal lattces Concluson In ths paper, we have revewed our recent theoretcal works on Ferm-Bose mxtures n dsordered optcal lattces. In the strongly correlated regme and under constrants that we have dscussed n detal, the physcs of the mxture can be mapped nto that of sngle-speces Ferm compostes. Ths s governed by a Ferm-Hubbard lke Hamltonan wth parameters that can be controlled wth accuracy n state-of-the-art experments on ultracold atoms. We have shown that the presence of dsorder (created by random on-ste energes) ntroduces further control possbltes and nduces an extraordnary rch quantum phase dagram. For the sake of concseness, we have restrcted our dscusson to a partcular regme that proves to be a case study (more detals may be found n Ref. [26]). For weak dsorder, we have dscussed the phase dagram whch corresponds to the formaton of Ferm glass, Doman nsulator, drty superfluds and metallc phases. Numercal calculatons support our dscusson. For larger ampltudes of dsorder, we have shown that the Hamltonan reduces to that of a spnglass,.e. a spn system wth random exchange terms. In our system, the fcttous spns are coded by the presence or the absence of partcles n each lattce ste. The physcs of spnglasses s a challengng problem n statstcal physcs whch s stll unsolved. In partcular, two theores are competng: the droplet pcture and the Mézard-Pars pcture. These two theores lead to dfferent predctons and even the nature of orderng n spnglasses s not known. On the one hand, the Mézard- Pars pcture, whch s assumed to be vald for long-range spn exchange, predcts the exstence of a huge number of quantum states wth very smlar energes that all contrbute to the low-temperature physcs of spnglasses. On the other hand, the droplet pcture, whch s beleved to be vald for short spn exchange, assumes the exstence of only two pure states connected by spn flp symmetry and exctatons are domans of constant magnetzaton wth fractal boundares. As possble expermental realzatons of spnglass systems wth controllable parameters, mxtures of ultracold fermons and bosons may serve as quantum smulators to solve the controversy and shed new lght on ths extraordnary rch physcs.
