HAMILTONIANS FOR THE ZEROS OF A GENERAL FAMILY OF ZETA FUNTIONS SU HU AND MIN-SOO KIM arxiv:8.662v3 [math.nt] 8 Jan 29 Abstract. Towards the Hilbert-Pólya conjecture, in this paper, we present a general construction of Hamiltonian Ĥf, which leads a general family of Hurwitz zeta functions ( ) zn L(f, z n, x ) defined by Mellin transform becomes their eigenstates under a suitable boundary condition, and the eigenvalues E n have the property that z n = 2 ( ie n) are the zeros of a general family of zeta functions L(f, z).. Introduction The Riemann zeta function ζ(z) is defined as (.) ζ(z) = n, Re(z) > z n= and it has the integral representation (.2) ζ(z) = t z e t dt ([2, Theorem 2.2]). It is well-known that ζ(z) can be analytically continued to the whole complex plane except for a single pole at z = with residue and ζ(z) satisfies the following functional equation ( πz ) (.3) ζ(z) = 2(2π) z Γ( z) sin ζ( z) 2 ([2, Theorem 2.7]). From this, we see that ζ(z) is symmetric with the axis Re(z) =. 2 By (.3), from the vanishing of the function sin ( ) πz 2, the negative even integers are also zeros of ζ(z), which are called the trivial zeros. In 859, Riemann [7] conjectured that the nontrivial zeros of ζ(z) are all lie on the line Re(z) =. This becomes one of most remarkable conjectures in mathematics, known as the Riemann hypothesis. To the purpose of solving Riemann 2 hypothesis, Hilbert-Pólya [8] conjectured that the imaginary parts of the zeros of ζ(z) might correspond to the eigenvalues of a Hermitian, self-adjoint operator. Berry and Keating [3] conjectured that the classical counterpart of such a Hamiltonian may have the form Ĥ = ˆxˆp, but a Hamiltonian possessing this property has not yet been found. 2 Mathematics Subject lassification. 8Q2,M35,B68. 2 2 SU HU AND MIN-SOO KIM Let ˆp = i x be the momentum operator. Recently, Bender, Brody and Müller [4] constructed a non-hermitian Hamiltonian (.4) Ĥ = e (ˆxˆp + ˆpˆx)( e iˆp ), iˆp which satisfies the conditions of the Hilbert-Pólya conjecture, that is, if the eigenfunctions of Ĥ satisfy the boundary condition ψ n() = for all n, then the eigenvalues E n have the property that ( ie 2 n) are the nontrivial zeros of the Riemann zeta function, and the Hurwitz zeta functions ψ n (x) = ζ(z n, x + ) are the corresponding eigenstates. They also constructed the metric operator to define an inner-product space, on which the Hamiltonian is Hermitian. They remarked that if the analysis may be made rigorous to show that Ĥ is manifestly self-adjoint, then this implies that the Riemann hypothesis holds true. In this paper, we present a general construction of Hamiltonian Ĥf, which leads a general family of Hurwitz zeta functions ( ) zn L(f, z n, x ) becomes their eigenstates under a suitable boundary condition, and the eigenvalues E n have the property that z n = ( ie 2 n) are the zeros of a general family of zeta functions L(f, z) (see Theorem 3.). The definitions of L(f, z, x) and L(f, z) will be given in the next section. 2. Mellin transform and zeta functions Recall that a function f tends rapidly to at infinity if for any k, as t + the functions t k f(t) tends to. Let tf( t) be a function on [, ) tending rapidly to at infinity and for Re(z) >, we define a general family of zeta functions L(f, z, x) from the following integral representation (2.) L(f, z) = t z f( t) dt As pointed out by ohen [5, Proposition.2.2 (2)], if f( t) itself is a function on [, ) and it tends rapidly to at infinity, then we have L(f, z) can be analytically continued to the whole of into a holomorphic function. The Huwitz zeta function ζ(s, x) is defined by the series (2.2) ζ(z, x) =, Re(z) >, (n + x) z where x (, ) (see ohen [5, p.72, Definition 9.6.] and the discussions for the definition area of x there). It has the integral representation (2.3) ζ(z, x) = e (x )t t z e t dt. Inspired from this, we also define a general family of Hurwitz zeta function L(f, z, x) as the following integral representation (2.4) L(f, z, x) = It is easy to see that L(f, z, ) = L(f, z). t z e (x )t f( t) dt, Re(z) >. t
ZEROS OF A GENERAL FAMILY OF ZETA FUNTIONS 3 The above definitions of a general family of zeta functions L(f, z, x) and L(f, z) may involve the well-known Hurwitz zeta functions, Dirichlet L-functions, Riemann zeta functions and other zeta functions. Letting f(t) = in (2.) and (2.4), we have the Riemann zeta function ζ(z) and the Hurwitz zeta function ζ(z, x), respectively (see olmez s e t Tsinghua lecture notes [6, p.4]). Suppose χ is a Dirichlet character modulo m and L(χ, z) = n= χ(n) n z = p ( χ(p) p z ) is the Dirichlet L-function. From the integral representation of the Gamma function e nt t z dt t = n, z we have where (2.5) L(χ, z) = G χ (t) = = χ(n)e nt = n= r m χ(r)e rt e mt G χ (t)t z dt, Re(z) >, m χ(r) r= q= e (r+qm)t (see ohen [5, p.6]). Thus letting f(t) = G χ ( t) in (2.), we recover the Dirichlet L-function L(χ, z). Let (2.6) λ(z) =, Re(z) >, (2n + ) z be the Dirichlet lambda function according to Abramowitz and Stegun s handbook [, pp ], which has also been studied by Euler under the notation N(z) (see [, p. 7]). By [9, (2.)], we have the following integral representation (2.7) λ(z) = e t t z dt, Re(z) >. e 2t Thus letting f(t) = e t in (2.), we recover the Dirichlet lambda function e 2t λ(z). Assume the function tf(t) is analytic on an open disc of radius r centered at in the complex plane, we have the following result. Proposition 2.. Let be a loop around the negative real axis. If < x the function defined by the contour integral (2.8) I(f, z, x) = t z e ( x)t f(t) dt t
4 SU HU AND MIN-SOO KIM is an entire function of z. Moreover, we have (2.9) L(f, z, x) = Γ( z)i(f, z, x), Re(z) >. Remark 2.2. If Re(z), we define L(f, z, x) by the equation (2.) L(f, z, x) = Γ( z)i(f, z, x). This equation provides the analytic continuation of L(f, z, x) in the entire complex plane. Proof. The proof follows from similar arguments as [2, Theorem 2.3]. We regard the interval [, ) of integration as a path of a complex integral, and then expanding this a little. Here we consider the following contour. For >, we define by a curve ϕ : (, ) given by u u <, : ϕ(u) = exp ( ) πi u+ u, u u >. In the definition of, the parts for u < and u > overlap, but we interpret it that for u < we take the path above the real axis and for u > below the real axis. This path is illustrated in Figure. Figure. Path of Now consider the complex contour integral (2.) t z e ( x)t f(t) dt Since we have to treat t z on, we shall choose a complex power t z for z. Denoting the argument of t by arg t, we can define a single-valued function log t on \ {s = a + ib b =, a } by log t = log t + i arg t ( π < arg t < π). Using this, a single-valued analytic function t z on \ {s = a + ib b =, a } is defined by t z = e z log t = e z(log t +i arg t), where π < arg t < π. We divide the contour into three pieces as follows. : the part of the real axis from to, 2 : the positively oriented circle of radius with center at the origin, 3 : the part of the real axis from to.
ZEROS OF A GENERAL FAMILY OF ZETA FUNTIONS 5 We have = For t on, we put arg t = π, and for t on 3, we put arg t = π. Then the integral on is given by and on 3 by t z e ( x)t f(t) dt t = 3 t z e ( x)t f(t) dt t = Thus, together we get (2.2) t z e ( x)t f(t) dt t = (eπiz e πiz ) t z e πiz e ( x)t f( t)dt = e πiz t z e ( x)t f( t)dt t z e πiz e ( x)t f( t)dt = e πiz t z e ( x)t f( t)dt t z e ( x)t f( t)dt+ t z e ( x)t f(t) dt 2 The circle 2 is parameterized as t = e iθ ( π θ π), so on 2 we have t z = z e i(z )θ, and the absolute value of the integral is estimated from above as t z e ( x)t f(t) dt π (2.3) 2 t z e i(z )θ e ( x)eiθ f(e iθ )ie iθ dθ π π = Re(z) e izθ e ( x)eiθ f(e iθ ) dθ. Since tf(t) is analytic on an open disc of radius r centered at, we have f(e iθ ) is bounded as a function of and θ if r/2 and π θ π. So if we take the limit, then, for Re(z) >, by (2.3) we get (2.4) lim t z e ( x)t f(t) dt 2 t =. Therefore, using (2.4), we get (2.5) π t z e ( x)t f(t) dt t = (eπiz e πiz ) t z e ( x)t f( t)dt. Let I(f, z, x) = t z e ( x)t f(t) dt
6 SU HU AND MIN-SOO KIM By (2.4) and (2.5), we have I(f, z, x) = t z e ( x)t f(t) dt t = eπiz e πiz t z e ( x)t f( t)dt (2.6) sin πz = L(f, z, x) π = L(f, z, x), Γ( z) which is the desired result. 3. Main results Let H = L 2 (, 2] be the Hilbert space of all complex valued functions f, defined almost everywhere on R, such that f is measurable, f vanishes almost everywhere on R\(, 2] and f 2 is Lebesgue integrable, with the pointwise operations of additions and the multiplication-by-scalars, and with the L 2 norm ( /2 f 2 = f(x) dx) 2. R Assume the following Taylor expansion at t = (3.) ( t)f(t) = a n t n with a. Define an operator on H by (3.2) ˆ f Ψ(x) = f( iˆp) Ψ(x), for any Ψ(x) H. Then we have the following result. Theorem 3.. Let ˆp = i x be the momentum operator and Ĥf = ˆpˆx) ˆ f be an operator on the Hilbert space H = L 2 (, 2]. Then ˆ f (ˆxˆp+ (3.3) Ĥ f Ψ(f, z, x) = i(2z )Ψ(f, z, x), where Ψ(f, z, x) = ( ) z L(f, z, x ) and L(f, z, x) is defined in (2.4) and (2.). Furthermore, if we propose the boundary condition Ψ(f, z, 2) = to the differential equation (3.3), then we have the nth eigenstates of the Hamiltonian Ĥf are Ψ(f, z n, x) = ( ) zn L(f, z n, x ), the nth eigenvalues are E n = i(2z n ), and from the boundary condition, z n = 2 ( ie n) are the zeros of the general family zeta functions L(f, z).
Proof. By (3.) we have ZEROS OF A GENERAL FAMILY OF ZETA FUNTIONS 7 (3.4) ˆ f Ψ(x) = f( iˆp)ψ(x) = iˆp a n ( iˆp) n Ψ(x). Interpreting (iˆp) as an integral operator with a boundary at infinity we have (3.5) ˆ f x z = iˆp g(x) = x g(t)dt, ( ) x a n ( iˆp) n z z a n ( iˆp) n x z. = z Γ(µ+) Since iˆp = x and x n x µ = Γ(µ n+) xµ n, from (3.5), we have Γ(2 z) (3.6) ˆ f x z = a n ( ) n x z n z Γ(2 z n). Since Γ(2 z n) has the following integral representation Γ(2 z n) = e u u n+z 2 du, where denotes a Hankel contour that encircles the negative-u axis in the positive orientation. From (3.6), we have ˆ Γ( z) ( f x z = x z e u u z 2 du a n u ) n x (3.7) Letting u x (3.8) = Γ( z) x z e u u z 2 f ( u x ) ( u x) du. = t in (3.7), we have ˆ Γ( z) f x z = t z e xt f( t) dt t z Γ( z) = ( ) t z e xt f(t) dt By (2.9) and (2.), (3.9) ˆ f x z = ( ) z L(f, z, x ). Let Ĥf = ˆ f (ˆxˆp + ˆpˆx) ˆ f. Denote by Ψ(f, z, x) = ( ) z L(f, z, x ), by (3.9), we have (3.) Ĥ f Ψ(f, z, x) = = ˆ f ˆ f (ˆxˆp + ˆpˆx) ˆ f ˆ (ˆxˆp + ˆpˆx)x z = i(2z )Ψ(f, z, x). f x z
8 SU HU AND MIN-SOO KIM Thus if we propose the boundary condition Ψ(f, z, 2) = to the differential equation (3.), then we have the nth eigenstates of the Hamiltonian Ĥf are Ψ(f, z n, x) = ( ) zn L(f, z n, x ), the nth eigenvalues are E n = i(2z n ), and from the boundary condition, z n = ( ie 2 n) are the zeros of the general family zeta functions L(f, z) (since L(f, z, ) = L(f, z)).
