Costuctio of Factal Sufaces by Recuet Factal Itepolatio Cuves Chol-hui Yu, Hyog-chol O, Hui-chol Choi axiv: v6 math.ds] 2 Aug 204 Faculty of Mathematics, Kim Il Sug Uivesity, Pyogyag, D. P. R. Koea Abstact A method to costuct factal sufaces by ecuet factal cuves is povided. Fist we costuct factal itepolatio cuves usig a ecuet iteated fuctios system (RIFS) with fuctio scalig factos ad estimate thei box-coutig dimesio. The we peset a method of costuctio of wide class of factal sufaces by factal cuves ad Lipschitz fuctios ad calculate the box-coutig dimesio of the costucted sufaces. Fially, we combie both methods to have moe flexible costuctios of factal sufaces. Keywods: Factal cuve, Factal suface, Recuet iteated fuctio system(rifs), Boxcoutig dimesio, Factal itepolatio fuctio. 200 Mathematical Subject Classificatio: 37C45; 28A80; 4A05 Itoductio A Factal suface (o factal cuve) is a factal set which is a gaph of some cotiuous fuctio o R 2 (o R). The method of costuctio of factal sufaces (o factal cuves) ae closely elated to the geeatio of factal itepolatio fuctios (FIF). The FIFs wee itoduced by Basley 2] i 986 ad afte that have bee widely studied ad used i appoximatio theoy, image compessio, compute gaphics ad modelig of atual sufaces such as ocks, metals, plaets, teais ad so o. The costuctios of factal sufaces, such as self-simila, self-affie o o self-affie sufaces, by IFSs o RIFSs have bee studied i may papes (see 5, 6, 9,, 3, 4, 9]). These sufaces ae all attactos of some IFSs o RIFSs. I ode to esue the cotiuity of the suface, some authos i the ealy days assumed that the itepolatio odes o the bouday ae colliea. Late Malysz ], Metzle ad Yu 4] ad Feg et al. 9] studied the costuctio of factal itepolatio sufaces o abitay data set usig IFS. Futhemoe Malysz ] ad Metzle ad Yu 4] estimated the dimesios of the esult sufaces. I 5], the authos studied the costuctio of ecuet factal itepolatio sufaces. I 5, ] they use costat cotactio factos i costuctio of IFS o RIFS ad i 9, 4] they use fuctio cotactio factos i costuctio of IFS. The factal popeties of such ough sufaces as those of metals o ocks may expessed by sectioal pofiles of those sufaces. That s why costuctios of factal sufaces by factal cuves have bee studied i may papes (see 7, 8, 2, 6, 7, 8]). I 2], Madelbot suggested that the factal dimesio of a sufaces costucted by a sigle cuve ca be obtaied by addig to the factal dimesio of the cuve. I 8], Falcoe itoduced factal sufaces costucted by the movemet of a factal cuve alog a segmet ad detemied thei factal dimesio. Xie ad Fag poposed the so called sta poduct factal sufaces which ae costucted by the movemet of a factal cuves alog aothe oe (7]). I 8] a costuctio of factal sufaces by 4 factal cuves, which ae
bouday cuves of the costucted suface, ad i 6] a costuctio of Bush type factal sufaces by two Bush cuves wee studied. Bouboulis ad Dalla 7] povided a costuctio of factal sufaces by the factal itepolatio. All the costuctios of factal sufaces by factal cuves have commo popety that the factal dimesio of the costucted sufaces is detemied by oe of the factal cuves costuctig them, ad that the factal cuves ae combied with costats o oe dimesioal fuctios, which ae called combiatio fuctios. Ad i, 3], they costucted the factal cuves by IFS o RIFS with costat vetical scalig factos. These costuctios costai vetical scalig factos (to be costats) ad combiatio fuctios (to be costats o oe-dimesioal fuctios). Hece, these costuctios lack the flexibility eeded to model complex atual cuves ad sufaces. Because objects i atue modeled by factals ae vey complex ad iegula, we eed flexible costuctios which ca costuct boade class of factal sets fo modelig them. The aim of this pape is to itoduce costuctios of a ew, boade class of factal cuves ad sufaces. The ecuet iteated fuctio system (RIFS) is a geealizatio of the IFS. The vetical scalig factos of tasfomatios i IFS (o RIFS) ae cotactio atios at each poit of a attacto of IFS (o RIFS) ad chaacteize a factal stuctue of the attacto. Ad it is moe geeal that each poit of images i atue has a diffeet cotactio atio, ad the class of Lipschitz fuctios is boade tha the oe of costats ad the oe-dimesioal fuctios. A factal dimesio is impotat paamete that chaacteizes a factal stuctue of set. I ode to esue moe flexibility i modelig atual shapes ad pheomea o i image pocessig we itoduce a costuctio of ecuet factal itepolatio cuves by moe geeal RIFSs with fuctio scalig factos (Theoem, which esues that a attacto of costucted RIFS is a gaph of some cotiuous fuctio ad gives how to make the factal itepolatio fuctio, which ca be used to get itepolatio values fom a discete data set with factal popety) ad estimate the boxcoutig dimesio (Theoem 2, which gives the factal stuctue of the costucted cuves). Ad we costuct boade class of factal sufaces by factal cuves ad Lipschitz fuctios, ad calculate the box-coutig dimesio of the costucted sufaces (Theoem 3, which shows the b-coutig dimesio of sufaces costucted by the ecuet factal ad Lipschitz fuctios ad shows that the costucted sufaces ae factal sufaces, ad thei factal stuctue, ad that the box-coutig dimesio of the costucted factal sufaces ca be cotolled by oe of the ecuet factal cuves). Fially we combie both costuctios to costuct factal sufaces. These costuctios of ecuet factal itepolatio cuves ad factal sufaces ca be used to appoximate discete sequece of data (like seismic, electocadiogam data), atual cuves (like coastlies, pofiles of moutai ages, tops of clouds ad hoizos ove foest) ad atual sufaces (like ocks, metals, teais), espectively. The emaide of the aticle is ogaized as follows: The sectio 2 descibes some basic otios of RIFS. The sectio 3 costucts ecuet factal cuves with fuctio vetical scalig factos ad estimates thei box coutig dimesios. The sectio 4. povides a geeal method of costuctio of factal sufaces combiig factal cuves usig Lipschitz fuctios ad a fomula of the box coutig dimesios. As oe applicatio of the esults of the sectios 3 ad 4., the sectio 4.2 descibes a method usig some Lipschitz fuctios ad povides some examples. 2 Pelimiaies o RIFS I this sectio we descibe some basic otios o ecuet iteated fuctio systems ad elated lemmas. The class of ieducible matices ae impotat i RIFS theoy. Defiitio 0] Let Q = (q ij ) be matix. Q is called educible, if the set of idices {, 2,..., } ca be decomposed ito two distict ad complemetay subsets {i, i 2,..., i µ } ad {j, j 2,..., j ν }, i.e., {i, i 2,..., i µ } {j, j 2,..., j ν } =, 2
such that {i, i 2,..., i µ } {j, j 2,..., j ν } = {, 2,..., } q ia,j b = 0, a =, 2,..., µ; b =, 2,..., ν. If this is ot possible, the Q is a ieducible matix. The followig esults o ieducible matices ae useful ad ca efe to 0, 5]. Lemma Coside a squae matix A. The followig statemets ae equivalet. () A is ieducible. (2) Fo evey pai (i, j), i, j =, 2,...,, thee is a k > 0 such that the elemet of the i th ow j th colum of the matix A k is positive. Lemma 2 A is a o-egative, educible matix, iff the matix (I + A) is positive (whee I is the idetity matix). Lemma 3 (Peo-Fobeius Theoem) Let A 0 be a ieducible squae matix. The we have the followig two statemets. () The spectal adius ρ(a) of A is a eigevalue of A ad it has stictly positive eigevecto y (i.e., y i > 0 fo all i) (2) ρ(a) iceases if ay elemet of A iceases. Defiitio 2 3, 4] (X, d X ) is a complete metic space ad X, X 2,..., X ae subsets of X. Let W i : X i X(i =,..., ) be cotactio maps. M = (p ij ) i,j= is a ow-stochastic matix (i.e., such a matix that j= p ij =, i =,..., ) ad ieducible. The {X; M; W,..., W } is called a ecuet iteated fuctio system(o simply RIFS). The matix C = (c ij ) defied by {, pji > 0, c ij = 0, p ji = 0. is called the coectio matix of RIFS. Let H(X) be the set of all oempty compact subset of X ad h the Hausdoff distace i H(X). The (H(X), h) is a complete metic space ]. I the set H(X) := H(X) = H(X) H(X), }{{} we defie a distace h : H(X) H(X) R as follows: h((a, A 2,..., A ), (B, B 2,..., B )) := max h(a i, B i ), i=,..., (A, A 2,..., A ), (B, B 2,..., B ) H(X) The ( H(X), h) is a complete metic space 4]. Fo a give ecuet iteated fuctios system {X; M; W,..., W }, we defie the tasfomatio W : H(X) H(X) of H(X) as follws: let W(B) := c W (B ) c 2 W (B 2 ) c W (B ) c 2 W 2 (B ) c 22 W 2 (B 2 ) c 2 W 2 (B ). c W (B ) c 2 W (B 2 ) c W (B ) = j Λ() W (B j ) j Λ(2) W 2(B j ). j Λ() W (B j ) 3
fo evey B = (B,..., B ) H(X). Hee Λ(i) = {j : c ij = }, i =,...,. We will deote the tasfomatio W as a matix fom by c W c 2 W... c W c 2 W 2 c 22 W 2... c 2 W 2 W = c W c 2 W... c W This tasfomatio W is a cotactio map i H(X) ad the uique fixed poit A = (A,..., A ) is called the attacto o ivaiat set of the RIFS, o ecuet factal 3, 4]. Note. The ivaiat set of RIFS is a vecto whose elemets ae oempty compact sets. If A = (A,..., A ) is the ivaiat set of a RIFS{X; M; W,..., W }, the we have A i = j Λ(i) W i(a j ), i =,...,. Usually, makig a slight abuse of otatio, we ofte call the uio A = i= A i of all A i as the attacto of RIFS, too. Defiitio 3. A cuve which is the ivaiat set of a RIFS o R 2 is called a ecuet factal cuve(o RFC). Defiitio 4. I geeal, the box-coutig dimesio dim B A of a factal set A is defied by dim B A = lim δ 0 log N δ (A) log δ (if this limit exists), whee N δ (A) is ay of the followigs (see 9]): (i) the smallest umbe of closed balls of adius δ that cove A; (ii) the smallest umbe of cubes of side δ that cove A; (iii) the umbe of δ-mesh cubes that itesect A; (iv) the smallest umbe of sets of diamete at most δ that cove A; (v) the lagest umbe of disjoit balls of adius δ with cetes i A. Hee we use (iii). 3 Costuctio of ecuet factal itepolatio cuves I this sectio, we costuct ecuet factal cuves with fuctio vetical scalig factos ad estimate thei box-coutig dimesio. Let a data set be P = { (x i, y i ) R 2 ; i =,..., }, (x 0 < x <... < x ) ad let N = {,..., }, I = x 0, x ], I i = x i.x i ], i =,...,. We deote Lipschitz (o cotactio) costat of Lipschitz (o cotactio) mappig f by L f (o c f ). Let l 2, l N ad let Ĩk = x s(k), x e(k) ], x s(k), x e(k) {x 0,..., x }, hee e(k) s(k) 2, k =,..., l, as a custom, I i is called a egio ad Ĩk a domai. We collect a map γ : N N l. This meas that we elate evey egio to a domai. Fo each i N, let k = γ(i). Fo i N (ad k = γ(i)), let a mappig L i = L i,k : Ĩk I i be such a cotactio homeomophism that L i,k : { x s(k), x e(k) } {xi, x i }. Such a map ca be easily costucted i a stadad way. Let H R be such a sufficietly lage iteval that y i H, i =,...,. Let F i = F i,k : Ĩk H R be a fuctio defied by F i,k (x, y) = s i,k (L i,k (x))a(y) + b i,k (x) ad satisfy F i,k (x α, y α ) = y β, α {s(k), e(k)}, () 4
whee L i,k (x α ) = x β, β {i, i} ad a(y) is a Lipschitz fuctio o H such that a(y α ) = y α, α {s(k), e(k)}, b i,k (x) is a Lipschitz fuctio defied o the domai Ĩk ad s i,k (x) is a cotactio fuctio o I i with s i,k (x)l a < (which is called a vetical scalig facto.) Example The fuctio F i,k satisfyig () ca be easily costucted. Whe h(x), g(x) ae Lipschitz mappigs o I ad satisfy the coditios g(x α ) = y α, α {s(k), e(k)}, h(x i ) = y i, i = 0,,...,, ad s i,k (x) ae take as fee ukow fuctios, the fuctios F i,k (x, y) = s i,k (L i,k (x))(a(y) g(x)) + h(l i,k (x)), satisfy (). We defie tasfomatios W i,k : Ĩk H I i R (i =,..., ; k = γ(i)) by W i,k (x, y) = (L i,k (x), F i,k (x, y)). The thee exists some distace equivalet to the Euclidea metic o R 2 such that W i,k (i =,..., ; k = γ(i)) ae cotactio tasfomatios with espect to the distace. We defie a ow-stochastic matix M = (p ij ) by { p ij = a i, I i Ĩγ(j) 0, othewise, whee fo evey i( N ), the umbe a i idicates the umbe of the domais Ĩγ(j) cotaiig the egio I i. The a coectio matix C = (c ij ) is defied as follows {, pji > 0, c ij = 0, p ji = 0. It is clea that if the ow-stochastic matix is ieducible, the the coectio matix is also ieducible. Let E = I H R 2. We deote the attacto of the ecuet iteated fuctios system (RIFS) {E; M; W i,k, i =,...,, γ(i) = k {,..., l}} by A. The the followig theoem shows that A is a ecuet factal cuve. Theoem The attacto A costucted above is a gaph of some cotiuous fuctio which itepolates the data set P. Poof. Let C(I) = { ϕ C 0 (I); ϕ(x i ) = y i, i = 0,,..., }, the the set C(I) is complete metic space with espect to om. We ca easily kow that the opeato T : C(I) C(I) ; (T ϕ)(x) = F i,k (L i,k (x), ϕ(l i,k (x))), x I i is well defied ad the opeato T is a cotactio o the complete metic space C(I). Theefoe the opeato T has a uique fixed poit i C(I), which we deote by f. The the f is peseted by f(x) = s i,k (x)f(l i,k (x) + b(x), i =,...,, γ(i) = k which meas that G(f) = A, whee G(f) deote a gaph of f. We estimate box-coutig dimesios of the ecuet factal cuves costucted above. We ca assume that I = 0, ], sice the box-coutig dimesio is ivaiat ude bi-lipschitz mappig. Fo a set D( R o R 2 ) ad a fuctio f defied o D, R f D] = sup { f(x 2 ) f(x ) ; x, x 2 D}. 5

We defie a mappig F : I R R by F (x, y) = s(l(x))a(y) + b(x), (x, y) I R. Lemma 4 Let f : I R be cotiuous fuctio. The R F (L, f L )L(I)] sl a R f I] + I (c s ā f + L b ). Hee I is a legth of the iteval I, s = max I s(x) ad ā f = max I a(f(x)). Poof. Fo ay x( L(I)), let deote x = L (x)( I). The F (L, f L )(x) F (L, f L )(x ) = = F (L (x), f L (x)) F (L (x ), f L (x )) = s(x)a(f( x)) + b( x) s(x )a(f( x )) b( x ) = s(x)a(f( x)) s(x)a(f( x )) + s(x)a(f( x )) s(x )a(f( x )) + b( x) b( x ) sl a R f I] + c s x x ā f + L b x x sl a R f I] + I (c s ā f + L b ). We assume that the ow-stochastic matix M is ieducible ad the mappig a(x) is idetity. Note that i what follows the latte a is used i aothe meaig. Let x i+ x i = (i = 0,,..., ), x e(k) x s(k) = a (k =,..., l; a N). Let L i,k(i N, k = γ(i)) be similitude cotactio tasfomatios. The the umbe of I j cotaied i Ĩk is a. Let S ad S be diagoal matices S = diag( s,..., s ), S = diag(s,..., s ), espectively, whee s i = max Ii s i,γ(i) (x), s i = mi Ii s i,γ(i) (x). Theoem 2 Let A be the ecuet factal cuve i Theoem. If thee is some iteval Ĩ k0 such that the poits of P (Ĩk 0 R) ae ot colliea, the the box-coutig dimesio dim B A of A has the followig lowe ad uppe bouds; () If λ, the + log a λ dim B A + log a λ, (2) If λ, the dim B A =, whee λ = ρ(sc) ad λ = ρ( SC) ae espectively spectal adii of the ieducible matices SC ad SC. Lemma 7 Let the fuctios f, λ be the same as the above oes. If we defie the fuctio λf : I R by (λf) (x) = λ (x) f (x), x I, the the box-coutig dimesio dim B G (λf) is the same as that of the fuctio f. Poof. Fo ay x, x I i, (λf) (x) (λf) (x ) = λ (x) f (x) λ (x ) f (x ) = λ (x) f (x) λ (x) f (x ) + λ (x) f (x ) λ (x ) f (x ) = λ (x) (f (x) f (x )) + (λ (x) λ (x )) f (x ). Let deote M f = Max x I f (x), c λ = Mi x I λ (x) ad c λ2 = Max x I λ (x). We ca suppose c λ > 0 (see Remak 2). The, fo lage eough, λ (x) f (x) f (x ) L λ f (x ) (λf) (x) (λf) (x ) λ (x) f (x) f (x ) + L λ f (x ), Thus c λ R f I i ] L λ M f R λf I i ] c λ2 R f I i ] + L λ M f. c λ N i (G (f)) m N i (G (λf)) c λ2 N i (G (f)) + m 2, c λ N (G (f)) m N (G (λf)) c λ 2 N (G (f)) + m 2, whee m = 2c λ + L λ M f, m 2 = 2 + L λ M f. Takig logaithms, the defiitio of the box-coutig dimesio ad Lemma 5 give the esult. Remak 2 I the case whee c λ = 0, we choose λ (x) = λ (x) + c such that c λ > 0 ad defie a fuctio λ f : I R by (λ f) (x) = (λf) (x)+cf (x) fo x I. The (λf) (x) = (λ f) (x)+( cf (x)). Theefoe, fom Lemma 5 ad 6, we have dim B G (λf) = dim B G (f). Poof of Theoem 3. Lemma 6 ad 7 give the esult of the theoem. Coollay Let f i, g j be factal cuves ad λ i, µ j be (oe-vaiable) Lipschitz fuctios fo i =,..., N, j =,..., M. The the box-coutig dimesio dim B G (F ) of the fuctio F : E R defied fo (x, y) E by is as follows: F (x, y) = Σ N i=λ i (x) f i (x) + Σ M j=µ j (y) g j (y) dim B G (F ) = + Max i,j {dim B G (f i ), dim B G (g j )}. The followig theoem is poved aalogously to Theoem 3.
Theoem 4 Let the fuctios f i, g j be the same as i Theoem 3 ad fuctios λ i, µ j : E R cotiuous Lipschitz fuctios fo i =,..., N, j =,..., M. The the fuctio F : E R defied fo (x, y) E by has the box-coutig dimesio of F (x, y) = Σ N i=λ i (x, y) f i (x) + Σ M j=µ j (x, y) g j (y) (6) dim B G (F ) = + Max i,j {dim B G (f i ), dim B G (g j )}. Remak 3 The factal sufaces peseted i the papes 8, 6, 7, 8] ae cotaied i the family of factal sufaces defied by (5) ad (6). 4.2 Costuctio of factal sufaces by ecuet factal itepolatio cuves As a simple applicatio of the esults of the pecedig sectios, we ca easily costuct factal sufaces if we use at least 2 ecuet factal itepolatio cuves. This methods ca have wide applicatios i modelig atual sufaces such as metals, ocks, teais ad so o o i itepolatio of the data set i R, R 2. Fo oe example, if data sets ae give alog the (x- ad y-) boudaies (o seveal paallel lies to the boudaies) of a squae, we ca costuct the factal sufaces itepolatig the data sets o the boudaies (o the paallel lies to the boudaies) by cotol of λ i (x, y) ad µ j (x, y) i (6). The esults of the calculatios of the box-coutig dimesio i Sectio 4. show that the complexity of the factal sufaces defied above ae domiated by the factal cuves geeatig them. Thus, the moe flexible a costuctio of factal cuves is, the moe atual the factal suface costucted by them is. We ca cotol the complexity ad shape of the factal sufaces costucted i Sectio 4. i ou way by the vetical cotactive fuctio s (x), the stochastic matix P ad Lipschitz fuctiosg(x), h(x) used i costuctio of ecuet factal cuves i sectio 3 ad the Lipschitz fuctios λ ad µ used i costuctio of factal sufaces by combiig factal cuves i sectio 4.. So, the factal sufaces peseted i this pape could be moe appopiate to model atual objects. Example 2. Costuctio of RFC ad FS by RFC. The Fig. shows the ecuet factal cuves geeated fom data set P = {(, 20), (0.25, 30), (0.5, 0), (0.75, 50), (.0, 0)} usig the method of the Example i Sectio 3 with diffeet vetical scalig facto fuctios, whee we use liea tasfomatios L i ad itepolatio polyomials g ad h. The vetical scalig factos {s (x), s 2 (x), s 3 (x), s 4 (x)} ae as follows: (a) {0.6, 0.9, 0.3, 0.9}, (b) { (x ) 2 / , (x 0.5) 2 / , 4(x 0.75) , 4(x ) }, (c) {0.9 si(3.4x), 0.9 si(3.4x), 0.9 si(3.4x), 0.9 si(3.4x)}, (d) {0.9 cos(x), 0.98 cos(20x), 0.95 cos(0x), 0.85 si(50x)}. The Fig. 2 shows the factal sufaces costucted usig ecuet factal cuves ad diffeet Lipschitz fuctios. The ecuet factal cuves f(x), g(y) ae (c), (d) i Fig., espectively. I the Fig. 2, we used the Lipschitz fuctios λ(x) = 0.8, µ(y) = 0.5 i (a) ad λ(x) = cos(4πx), µ(y) = si(2πy) i (b), λ(x, y) = (x 0.5) 2 + (y 0.5) 2, µ(x, y) = (x 0.5) 2 (y 0.5) 2 i (c) ad λ(x, y) = ( x)y, µ(x, y) = x( y) i (d).
