Caoical Form ad Separability of PPT States i C 2 C 2 C 2 C N Composite Quatum Systems Shao-Mig Fei, 2, Xiu-Hog Gao, Xiao-Hog Wag, Zhi-Xi Wag, ad Ke Wu Departmet of Mathematics, Capital Normal Uiversity, Beijig, Chia. 2 Istitute of Applied Mathematics, Uiversity of Bo, 535 Bo Germay arxiv:quat-ph/03046v 23 Oct 2003 Abstract We give acaoical form of PPTstates i C 2 C 2 C 2 C N with rak=n. From this caoical form a ecessary separable coditio for these states is preseted. Key words: Separability, Quatum etaglemet PACS umbers: Hk, Ta, c Quatum etagled states have become oe of the key resources i the rapidly expadig field of quatum iformatio processig ad computatio [, 2, 3, 4]. Nevertheless, the physical character ad mathematical structure of the quatum etaglemet are still ot fully uderstood yet. Oe eve does ot kow wether a geeral quatum mixed state is etagled or ot, ad how etagled it is after some oisy quatum processes. To quatify etaglemet, a umber of etaglemet measures such as etaglemet of formatio ad distillatio [5, 6], egativity [7], vo Neuma etropy ad relative etropy [5, 8] have bee proposed for bipartite states. However most proposed measures of etaglemet ivolve extremizatios which are difficult to hadle aalytically. For istace, the etaglemet of formatio [9] is iteded to quatify the amout of quatum commuicatio required to create a give bipartite state. So far o explicit aalytic formulae for etaglemet of formatio have bee foud for systems larger tha a pair of qubits [0], except for some symmetric states [] ad a class of special states [2]. The separability problem cocers both bipartite ad multipartite quatum states, although the measure of etaglemet is oly well defied for bipartite case. For pure states the separability is quite well uderstood [3]. Nevertheless, i real coditios, due to the iteractios with eviromet, oe ecouters mixed states rather tha pure oes. These mixed states ca still possess some residual etaglemet, but the quatum correlatios are weakeed. Hece the maifestatios of mixed-state etaglemet ca be very subtle [4]. A state of a composite quatum system is said to be disetagled or separable if it ca be prepared i a local or classical way. Let Ca M resp. Cb N be M resp. N dimesioal complex
Hilbert spaces associated with sub-quatum systems a resp. b. A separable bipartite state i Ca M CN b ca be prepared as a esemble realizatio of pure product states ψ a i ψb i occurrig with a certai probability p i : ρ ab = p i ρ i a ρi b, i where i p i =, ρ i α = ψ α i ψ i α, ψ α i areormalized purestates associated with thesubsystems α, ψα i are the traspose ad cojugate of ψα i, α = a,b. If o covex liear combiatio exists for a give ρ ab, the state is called etagled. For a geeric mixed state ρ ab, fidig a decompositio like i Eq. 2 or provig that it does ot exist is a o-trivial task see[5] ad refereces therei. The Bell iequalities satisfied by a separable system give the first ecessary coditio for separability [6]. Afterwards the Peres criterio[7] says that partial traspositios with respect to oe or more subsystems of a separable state ρ are positive: ρ tα 0, whereα is either a or b, t α stads for the partial traspositio with respect to a subsystem α. This criterio was further show to be also sufficiet for bipartite systems i C 2 C 2 ad C 2 C 3 [7]. The reductio criterio proposed idepedetly i [8] ad [9] gives aother ecessary criterio which is equivalet to the Peres criterio for C 2 C N composite systems but is geerally weaker. There are may other ecessary criteria such as majorizatio [20], etaglemet witesses [7, 2], extesio of Peres criterio [22], matrix realigmet [23], geeralized partial traspositio criterio GPT [24], geeralized reduced criterio [25]. For low rak desity matrices there are also some ecessary ad sufficiet criteria of separability [26]. The separability ad etaglemet i C 2 C 2 C N ad C 2 C 3 C N composite quatum systems have bee studied i terms of matrix aalysis o tesor spaces [27]. It is show that all such quatum states ρ with positive partial trasposes ad rak rρ N are separable. I this article weexted theresultsi[27] tothecaseof compositequatumsystemsic 2 C 2 C 2 C N. We give a caoical form of positive partial traspose PPT states i C 2 C 2 C 2 C N with rak N ad preset a ecessary separability criterio. A separable state i C 2 a C2 b C2 c CN d ρ abcd = i is of the form: p i ρ i a ρi b ρi c ρi d, 2 where i p i =, 0 < p i, ρ i α are desity matrices associated with the subsystems α, α = a,b,c,d. I the followig we deote by Rρ, Kρ, rρ ad kρ the rage, kerel, rak, dimesio of the kerel of ρ, respectively. We first derive a caoical form of PPT states i Ca 2 Cb 2 Cc 2 Cd N with rak N, which allows for a explicit decompositio of a give state i terms of covex sum of projectors o product vectors. Let 0 A, A ; 0 B, B ; 0 C, C ad 0 D N D be some local bases 2
of the sub-systems a, b, c, d respectively. Lemma. Every PPT state ρ i C 2 a C2 b C2 c CN d such that r A, B, C ρ A, B, C = rρ = N, ca be trasformed ito the followig caoical form by usig a reversible local operatio: ρ = D[CBA CB CA C BA B A I] [CBA CB CA C BA B A I] D 3 where A, B, C, D ad the idetity I are N N matrices actig o C N d ad satisfy the followig relatios: [A, A ] = [B, B ] = [C, C ] = [B, A] = [B, A ] = [C, A] = [C, A ] = [C, B] = [C, B ] = 0 ad D = D stads for the traspose ad cojugate. Proof. I the cosidered basis a desity matix ρ ca be always writte as: ρ = E E 2 E 3 E 4 E 5 E 6 E 7 E 8 E 2 E 2 E 23 E 24 E 25 E 26 E 27 E 28 E 3 E 23 E 3 E 34 E 35 E 36 E 37 E 38 E 4 E 24 E 34 E 4 E 45 E 46 E 47 E 48 E 5 E 25 E 35 E 45 E 5 E 56 E 57 E 58 E 6 E 26 E 36 E 46 E 56 E 6 E 67 E 68 E 7 E 27 E 37 E 47 E 57 E 67 E 7 E 78 E 8 E 28 E 38 E 48 E 58 E 68 E 78 E 8, 4 where E s are N N matrices, re 8 = N. After the projectio ρ = A ρ A, we obtai ρ = A ρ A = E 5 E 56 E 57 E 58 E 56 E 6 E 67 E 68 E 57 E 67 E 7 E 78 E 58 E 68 E 78 E 8. 5 ρ is ow a state i C 2 b C 2 c C N d with r ρ = rρ = N. As every pricipal mior determiat of ρ t B ρ t C is some pricipal mior determiat of ρ, the fact that ρ is PPT implies that ρ is also PPT, ρ 0. Usig the Lemma i [27] we have ρ = A B BA A B B A B A A B B BA B B B A B A BA A B A A A BA B A, 6 where [A,A ] = [B,B ] = [B,A] = [B,A ] = 0. It is direct to verify that the followig vectors i C 2 b C2 c CN d are kerel vectors k ρ: ψ f = 0 f A f, ψ g = 0 g B g, ψ h = 00 h BA h, f, g, h C N d. 3
Similarly, if we cosider the projectio B ρ B ad C ρ C, we have ρ = B ρ B = E 3 E 34 E 37 E 38 E 34 E 4 E 47 E 48 E 37 E 47 E 7 E 78 E 38 E 48 E 78 E 8 = A C CA A C C A C A A C C CA C C C A C A CA A C A A A CA C A ad ˇρ = C ρ C = E 2 E 24 E 26 E 28 E 24 E 4 E 46 E 48 E 26 E 46 E 6 E 68 E 28 E 48 E 68 E 8 = B C CB B C C B C B B C C CB C C C B C B CB B C B B B CB C B, where [C,C ] = [A,C] = [A,C ] = 0, [B,B ] = [B,C] = [B,C ] = 0. Hece the matrix 4 ow has the form: ρ = E E 2 E 3 E 4 E 5 E 6 E 7 E 8 E 2 B C CB E 23 B C C E 25 B C B E 27 B C E 3 E 23 A C CA A C C E 35 E 36 A C A A C E 4 C CB C CA C C E 45 C B C A C E 5 E 25 E 35 E 45 A B BA A B B A B A A B E 6 B C B E 36 B C B BA B B B A B E 7 E 27 A CA A C A BA A B A A A E 8 CB CA C BA B A It has the followig kerel vectors:, 7 00 f CB f, 0 h C h, 0 q B q, for all f, g,, m Cd N. This implies 00 g CA g, 00 p BA p, 0 m A m, 8 E 27 = B C A, E 36 = A C B, E 25 = B C BA, E 35 = A C BA, E 45 = C BA, E 23 = B C CA, E 7 = E 8 A, E 6 = E 8 B, E 5 = E 8 BA, 9 E 4 = E 8 C, E 3 = E 8 CA, E 2 = E 8 CB. Substitutig 9 ito 7 ad cosider partial traspose of ρ with respect to the first sub- 4
system a, we have E E 8 CB E 8 CA E 8 C A B E 8 A B CB A B CA A B C B C E 8 B C CB B C CA B C C B E 8 B CB B CA B C A C E 8 A C CB A C CA A C C A E 8 A CB A CA A C ρ ta = C E 8 C CB C CA C C E 8 CB CA C E 8 BA E 8 B E 8 A E 8 A B BA A B B A B A A B. B C BA B C B B C A B C B BA B B B A B A C BA A C B A C A A C A BA A B A A A C BA C B C A C BA B A 0 Sice the partial traspose with respect to the sub-system a is positive, ρ ta 0, ad it does ot chage a ρ a, we still have 00 p BA p kρ ta. This gives rise to the followig equalities: E 8 = CBA, E 8 = A B C. ρ is the of the followig form: E A B C CB A B C CA A B C C A B C BA A B C B A B C A A B C B C CBA B C CB B C CA B C C B C BA B C B B C A B C A C CBA A C CB A C CA A C C A C BA A C B A C A A C C CBA C CB C CA C C C BA C B C A C A B CBA A B CB A B CA A B C A B BA A B B A B A A B B CBA B CB B CA B C B BA B B B A B A CBA A CB A CA A C A BA A B A A A CBA CB CA C BA B A = [ CBA CB CA C BA B A I ] [CBA CB CA C BA B A I] +diag[,0,0,0,0,0,0,0] Σ+diag[,0,0,0,0,0,0,0], where = E A B C CBAdiag[σ,σ 2, ] deotes amatrix with diagoal blocks σ,σ 2,. Σ is PPT ad has 7N kerel vectors: 00 f CB f, 00 g CA g, 0 h C h, 0 q B q, 00 p BA p, 0 m A m, 000 k CBA k, for arbitrary f, g,, k Cd N. Takig ito accout ρ 0, we have 0. Moreover, sice rρ = rσ, the rages of the related matrices satisfy the relatio Rρ = RΣ Rdiag[, 0]. Therefore the correspodig kerels fulfill Kdiag[, 0] KΣ. For vectors φ k belog to the kerel KΣ, we ca deduce φ k diag[, 0] φ k = 0. As 0, we obtai that k = 0 for all k, ad thus = 0. Usig Lemma we ca prove the followig Theorem: Theorem. A PPT-state ρ i C 2 C 2 C 2 C N with rρ = N is separable if there exists a product basis e A, f B, g C such that r e A, f B, g C ρ e A, f B, g C = N. 5
Proof. Accordig to the Lemma the PPT state ρ ca be writte as A B C B C A C ρ = C A B CBA CB CA C BA B A B A. Sice all A, A, B, B, C ad C commute, they have commo eigevectors f. Let a, b ad c be the correspodig eigevalues of A, B ad C respectively. We have a b c b c a c c f ρ f = a c b a c b c a c b a b a b b a = [ c b We ca thus write ρ as where a ] c b a = e a,f b,g c e a,f b,g c. N ρ = ψ ψ φ φ ω ω f f, = ψ = c, φ = b, ω = a Because the local trasformatios are reversible, we ca ow apply the iverse trasformatios ad obtai a decompositio of the iitial state ρ i a sum of projectors oto product vectors. This proves the separability of ρ. We have derived a caoical form of PPT states i C 2 C 2 C 2 C N with rak N. A ecessary separability criterio is also obtaied from the represetatio of the caoical form. The results ca be geeralized to multipartite quatum systems with more sub-systems like C 2 C 2 C N, or with higher dimesios.. Refereces [] See, for example, D.P. DiVicezo, Sciece 270,
