1 Weak and srong momens of l r -norms of log-concave vecors arxv: v2 [mah.pr] 2 Nov 2015 Rafa l Laa la and Mara Srzelecka revsed verson Absrac We show ha for 1 and r 1 he -h momen of he l r -norm of a logconcave random vecor s comarable o he sum of he frs momen and he weak -h momen u o a consan rooronal o r. Ths exends he revous resul of Paours concernng Eucldean norms. 1 Inroducon and Man Resuls A measure µ on a locally convex lnear sace F s called logarhmcally concave logconcave n shor f for any comac nonemy ses K,L F and λ [0,1], µλk + 1 λl µk λ µl 1 λ. A random vecor wh values n F s called log-concave f s dsrbuon s logarhmcally concave. The class of log-concave measures s closed under lnear ransformaons, convoluons and weak lms. By he resul of Borell [3] a d-dmensonal vecor wh a full dmensonal suor s log-concave ff has a log-concave densy,.e. a densy of he form e h, wherehs a convex funcon wh values n, ]. A ycal examle of a log-concave vecor s a vecor unformly dsrbued over a convex body. Varous resuls and conjecures abou log-concave measures are dscussed n he recenly ublshed monograh [4]. One of he fundamenal roeres of log-concave vecors s he Paours nequaly [9] see also [1] for a shorer roof. I saes ha for a log-concave vecor X n R n, E X 2 1/ C 1 E X 2 2 1/2 +σ X for 1, 1 where n 1/ σ X := su E X. 2 1 Here and n he sequel by C 1,C 2,... we denoe absolue consans. I s naural o ask wheher nequaly 1 may be generalzed o non-eucldean norms. In [6] he followng conjecure was formulaed and dscussed. Research suored by he NCN gran DEC-2012/05/B/ST1/
2 Conjecure 1. There exss a unversal consan C such ha for any log-concave vecor X wh values n a fne dmensonal normed sace F,, E X 1/ C E X + su E ϕx 1/ for 1. ϕ F, ϕ 1 Our man resul saes ha he conjecure holds for saces ha may be embedded n l r for some r 1. Theorem 2. Le X be a log-concave vecor wh values n a normed sace F, whch may be somercally embedded n l r for some r [1,. Then for 1, E X 1/ C 2 r E X + su E ϕx 1/. ϕ F, ϕ 1 Remark 3. Le X and F be as above. Then by Chebyshev s nequaly we oban large devaon esmae for X : P X 2eC 2 re X ex σ 1 X,F E X for 1, where σ X,F := denoes he weak -h momen of X. su EϕX 1/ for 1 ϕ F, ϕ 1 Remark 4. If : F l r s a nonsomerc embeddngand λ = F lr 1 F F, hen we may defneanoher norm onf by x := x / F lr. ObvouslyF, somercally embeds n l r, moreover x x λ x for x F. Hence Theorem 2 gves E X 1/ λe X 1/ C 2 rλ C 2 rλ E X + su ϕ F, ϕ 1 E X + su E ϕx 1/ ϕ F, ϕ 1 E ϕx 1/. Snce log-concavy s reserved under lnear ransformaons and, by he Hahn-Banach heorem, any lnear funconal on a subsace of l r s a resrcon of a funconal on he whole l r wh he same norm, s enough o rove Theorem 2 for F = l r. An easy aroxmaon argumen shows ha we may consder fne dmensonal saces l n r. To smlfy he noaon for an n-dmensonal vecor X and 1 we wre σ r,x := su r 1 n 1/ E X, where r denoes he Hölder s dual of r,.e. r = r r 1 for r > 1 and r = for r = 1. 2
3 Theorem 5. Le X be a fne dmensonal log-concave vecor and r [1,. Then E X r 1/ C 2 re X r +σ r,x for 1. To show he above heorem we follow he aroach from [7] and esablsh he followng resul. Theorem 6. Suose ha r [1, and X s a log-concave n-dmensonal random vecor. Le n 1/r d := EX 2 1/2, d := d r. 2 Then for r, E n /r d X r 1 { X d } C 3 rσ r,x for C 4 rlog. 3 σ r,x Remark 7. Any fne dmensonal sace embeds somercally n l, so o show Conjecure 1 s enough o esablsh Theorem 2 wh a unversal consan n lace of C 2 r for r =. Such a resul was shown for soroc log-concave vecors.e. log-concave vecors wh mean zero and deny covarance marx, cf. [8, Corollary 3.8]. However a lnear mage of an soroc vecor does no have o be soroc, so o esablsh he conjecure we need o consder eher soroc vecors and an arbrary norm or vecors wh a general covarance srucure and he sandard l -norm. 2 Proofs Le us frs dscuss he noaon. By C we denoe unversal consans, he value of C may dffer a each occurrence. Whenever we wan o fx he value of an absolue consan we use leers C 1,C 2,... We may always assume ha C 1. By I we denoe he cardnaly of a se I. For an n-dmensonal random vecor Z and a R n we wre az for he vecor a Z. Observe ha E az 2 2 = a2 EZ2. Le us recall some useful facs abou log-concave vecors for deals see [7]. If Z s log-concave real random varable hen P Z ex 2 2eEZ 2 1/2 for 0. Moreover, f f : R n R s a semnorm, EfZ 1/ C 5 q EfZq 1/q for q 1 see [4, Theorem 2.4.6]. Therefore for any log-concave vecor X and any r, σ r,x λ C 5 λσ r,x for λ 1, 2. 3
4 The Paours nequaly 1 ogeher wh Chebyshev s nequaly mly P X 2 ec 1 E X 2 2 1/2 +σ X e for 1. 4 The nex rooson generalzes Prooson 4 from [7]. Prooson 8. Le X, r, d, and d be as n Theorem 6 and A := {X K}, where K s a convex se n R n sasfyng 0 < PA 1/e. Then for every r, n for every > 0, u 1, E X r 1 A {X d } C6 r r PA r σr,x r logpa+dr e /C 7. 5 n 2 kr d r 1 {PA {X 2 k d } e u PA} k=0 Proof. I s easy o see ha Y s log-concave. To smlfy he noaon se Le A := logpa and c := EY 2 1/2, = 1,...,n. I = Iv := { n: EY 2 v 2 d 2 }, where v s an absolue consan o be chosen laer. Le us also fx a sequence a n. Pu S = a c 1 Y 2.
