2 YIYU LIANG, EIICHI NAKAI, DACHUN YANG AND JUNQIANG ZHANG diffeen cone openings, which is a popey long known no o hold ue fo he classical Lusin aea funcion (see Wilson [48, 49]). Moe applicaions of ininsic Lilewood-Paley funcions wee given by Wilson [5, 5] and Lene [28, 29]. In paicula, Wilson [49] poved ha hese ininsic Lilewood-Paley funcions ae bounded on he weighed Lebesgue space L p w (Rn ) when p (, ) and w A p (R n ) (he class of Muckenhoup weighs). Recenly, Wang [47] and Jusin [4] also obained he boundedness of hese ininsic Lilewood-Paley funcions on weighed Moey spaces. Recallhaheclassical Moeyspace M p,κ (R n )wasfis inoducedbymoey in [35] o invesigae he local behavio of soluions o second ode ellipic paial diffeenial equaions. Fo p [, ) and κ [,), a funcion f L p loc (Rn ) is said o belong o he Moey space M p,κ (R n ), if f M p,κ (R n ) := sup R n [ κ f(y) p dy] /p <, whee he supemum is aken ove all balls of R n. The boundedness, on he Moey space, of classical opeaos, such as he Hady-Lilewood maximal opeao, he facional inegal opeao and he Caldeón-Zygmund singula inegal opeao, was sudied in [, ]. In paicula, Komoi and Shiai [24] fis inoduced he weighed Moey space and obained he boundedness of he above hese classical opeaos on his space. As a genealizaion of he space MO(R n ), he Campanao space L p,β (R n ) fo β R and p [, ), inoduced by Campanao [9], was defined as he se of all locally inegable funcions f such ha { /p f L p,β (R n ) := sup β f(x) f dx} p <, R n whee he supemum is aken ove all balls in R n and f denoes he aveage of f on, namely, f := f(y)dy. (.) I is well known ha, when κ (,), p [, ) and β = (κ )/p, M p,κ (R n ) andl p,β (R n )coincidewihequivalen noms(see, foexample, [2]). Assuming he finieness of he Lilewood-Paley funcions on a posiive measue se, Yabua[52] fis esablished he boundedness of he Lilewood-Paley funcions on L p,β (R n ) wih p (, ) and β [ /p, ). Sun [45] fuhe impoved hese esuls by assuming he finieness of he Lilewood-Paley funcions only on one poin. Meng, Nakai and Yang [34] poved ha some genealizaions of he classical Lilewood-Paley funcions, wihou assuming he egulaiy of hei kenels, ae bounded fom L p,β (R n ) o L p,β (Rn ) wih p [2, ) and β [ /p,], whee L p,β (Rn ) is a pope subspace of L p,β (R n ). This esul, which was poved in [34] o be ue even on spaces of homogeneous ype in he sense of Coifman and Weiss (see []), fuhe impoves he esul of Yabua [52] and Sun [45]. On he ohe hand, inbaum-olicz [4] and Olicz [39] inoduced he Olicz space, which is a naual genealizaion of L p (R n ). Le ϕ be a gowh funcion (see Definiion 2. below fo is definiion). Recenly, Ky [26] inoduced a new
INTRINSIC LITTLEWOOD-PALEY FUNCTIONS 3 Musielak-Olicz Hady space H ϕ (R n ), which genealizes boh he Olicz-Hady space (see, fo example, [2, 46]) and he weighed Hady space (see, fo example, [6, 7, 25, 33, 44]). Moeove, chaaceizaions of H ϕ (R n ) in ems of Lilewood-Paley funcions (see [9, 3]) and he ininsic ones (see [32]) wee also obained. As he dual space of H ϕ (R n ), he Musielak-Olicz Campanao space L ϕ,q (R n ) wih q [, ) was inoduced in [3], in which some chaaceizaions of L ϕ,q (R n ) wee also esablished. Recall ha Musielak-Olicz funcions ae he naual genealizaion of Olicz funcions ha may vay in he spaial vaiables; see, fo example, [36]. The moivaion o sudy funcion spaces of Musielak- Olicz ype comes fom hei wide applicaions in physics and mahemaics (see, fo example, [6, 7, 8, 38, 26]). In paicula, some special Musielak-Olicz Hady spaces appea naually in he sudy of he poducs of funcions in MO(R n ) and H (R n ) (see [7, 8]), and he endpoin esimaes fo he div-cul lemma and he commuaos of singula inegal opeaos (see [5, 7, 27, 4]). In his aicle, we inoduce he Musielak-Olicz Moey space M ϕ,φ (R n ) and he weighed Olicz-Moey space Mw (Rn ), and obain he boundedness, especively, on hese spaces of ininsic Lilewood-Paley funcions and hei commuaos wih MO(R n ) funcions. Moeove, we also obain he boundedness of ininsic Lilewood-Paley funcions on he Musielak-Olicz Campanao space L ϕ,q (R n ) which was inoduced in [3]. To be pecise, his aicle is oganized as follows. In Secion 2, fo a gowh funcion ϕ and a nondeceasing funcion φ, we inoduce he Musielak-Olicz Moey space M ϕ,φ (R n ) and obain he boundedness on M ϕ,φ (R n ) of he ininsic Lusin aea funcion S α, he ininsic g-funcion g α, he ininsic gλ -funcion g λ,α wih α (,] and λ (min{max{3, p },3+2α/n}, ) and hei commuaos wih MO(R n ) funcions. To his end, we fis inoduce an assisan funcion ψ and esablish some esimaes, espec o ϕ and ψ, which play key oles in he poofs (see Lemma 2.8 below). Anohe key ool needed is a Musielak-Olicz ype inepolaion heoem poved in [3]. We poin ou ha, in [47], Wang esablished he boundedness of gλ,α and [b,g λ,α ] on he weighed Moey space M p,κ w (Rn ) wih λ > max{3,p}. This coesponds o he case when ϕ(x,) := w(x) p fo all x R n and [, ) (.2) wih w A p (R n ) and p (, ) of Theoem 2.5 and Poposiion 2.2 below, in which, even fo his special case, we also impove he ange of λ > p in [47] o a wide ange λ > 3+2α/n when p > 3+2α/n. InSecion3, leφ : [, ) [, )benondeceasing, Φ() =, Φ() > when >, and lim Φ() =, w A (R n ) and φ : (, ) (, ) be noninceasing. In his secion, moivaed by Nakai [37], we fis inoduce he weighed Olicz-Moey space Mw (Rn ) and obain he boundedness on Mw (Rn ) of ininsic Lilewood-Paley funcions and hei commuaos wih MO(R n ) funcions. In Secion 4, fo q [, ), he boundedness of he afoemenioned ininsic Lilewood-Paley funcions on he Musielak-Olicz Campanao space L ϕ,q (R n ), which was inoduced in [3], is also esablished. To be pecise, following he ideas of [2] and [34], we fis inoduce a subspace L ϕ,q (Rn ) of L ϕ,q (R n ) and
4 YIYU LIANG, EIICHI NAKAI, DACHUN YANG AND JUNQIANG ZHANG pove ha he ininsic Lilewood-Paley funcions ae bounded fom L ϕ,q (R n ) o L ϕ,q (R n ) which fuhe implies ha he ininsic Lilewood-Paley funcions ae bounded on L ϕ,q (R n ). Even when ϕ(x,) := p fo all x R n and (, ), (.3) wih q (, ) and p (n/(n+),q/(q )], hese esuls ae new. Finally we make some convenions on noaion. Thoughou he whole pape, we denoe by C a posiive consan which is independen of he main paamees, bu i may vay fom line o line. The symbol A means ha A C. If A and A, hen we wie A. Fo any measuable subse E of R n, we denoe by E he se R n \ E and by χ E is chaaceisic funcion. Fo p [, ], we denoe by p is conjugae numbe, namely, /p+/p =. Also, le N := {, 2,...} and Z + := N {}. 2. oundedness of ininsic Lilewood-Paley funcions and hei commuaos on Musielak-Olicz Moey spaces In his secion, we inoduce he Musielak-Olicz Moey space M ϕ,φ (R n ) and esablish he boundedness on M ϕ,φ (R n ) of ininsic Lilewood-Paley funcions and hei commuaos wih MO(R n ) funcions. We begin wih ecalling he definiion of gowh funcions which wee fis inoduced by Ky [26]. Recall ha a funcion Φ : [, ) [, ) is called an Olicz funcion if i is nondeceasing, Φ() =, Φ() > fo all (, ) and lim Φ() =. We poin ou ha, diffeen fom he classical Olicz funcions, he Olicz funcions in his aicle may no be convex. The funcion Φ is said o be of uppe ype p (esp. lowe ype p) fo some p [, ), if hee exiss a posiive consan C such ha, fo all [, ) (esp. [,]) and s [, ), Φ(s) C p Φ(s). Fo a given funcion ϕ : R n [, ) [, ) such ha, fo any x R n, ϕ(x, ) is an Olicz funcion, ϕ is said o be of unifomly uppe ype p (esp. unifomly lowe ype p) fo some p [, ), if hee exiss a posiive consan C such ha, fo all x R n, [, ) and s [, ) (esp. s [,]), ϕ(x,s) Cs p ϕ(x,). The funcion ϕ(, ) is said o saisfy he unifomly Muckenhoup condiion fo some q [, ), denoed by ϕ A q (R n ), if, when q (, ), { } q/q sup sup ϕ(x,)dx [ϕ(y,)] q /q dy <, (, ) R n q whee /q+/q =, o, when q =, ( sup sup ϕ(x,)dx (, ) R n ) ess sup[ϕ(y,)] <. y Hee he fis supemums ae aken ove all (, ) and he second ones ove all balls R n. In paicula, when ϕ(x,) := w(x) fo all x R n, whee w is a weigh funcion, A q (R n ) is jus he classical A q (R n ) weigh class of Muckenhoup.
Le INTRINSIC LITTLEWOOD-PALEY FUNCTIONS 5 A (R n ) := q [, ) Now we ecall he noion of gowh funcions. A q (R n ). Definiion 2.. A funcion ϕ : R n [, ) [, ) is called a gowh funcion, if he following condiions ae saisfied: (i) ϕ is a Musielak-Olicz funcion, namely, (i) he funcion ϕ(x, ) : [, ) [, ) is an Olicz funcion fo all x R n ; (i) 2 he funcion ϕ(,) is a measuable funcion fo all [, ). (ii) ϕ A (R n ). (iii) ϕ is of unifomly lowe ype p and of unifomly uppe ype p, whee < p p <. Remak 2.2. (i) The noion of gowh funcions hee is slighly diffeen fom[26]. We only need < p p < hee, howeve, in [26], p (,] and p =. (ii) y ii) of [26, Lemma 4.], wihou loss of genealiy, we may assume ha, fo all x R n, ϕ(x, ) is coninuous and sicly inceasing. Ohewise, we may eplace ϕ by anohe equivalen gowh funcion ϕ which is coninuous and sicly inceasing. Thoughou he whole pape, we always assume ha ϕ is a gowh funcion as in Definiion 2. and, fo any measuable subse E of R n and [, ), we denoe ϕ(x,)dx by ϕ(e,). E The Musielak-Olicz space L ϕ (R n ) is defined o be he space of all measuable funcions f such ha ϕ(x, f(x) )dx < wih he Luxemboug nom (o R n Luxemboug-Nakano nom) { ( f L ϕ (R n ) := inf µ (, ) : x, f(x) ) } dx. µ R n ϕ If ϕ is as in (.2) wih p (, ) and w A p (R n ), hen L ϕ (R n ) coincides wih he weighed Lebesgue space L p w(r n ). Now, we inoduce he Musielak-Olicz Moey space M ϕ,φ (R n ). Definiion 2.3. Le ϕ be a gowh funcion and φ : [, ) [, ) be nondeceasing. A locally inegable funcion f on R n is said o belong o he Musielak- Olicz Moey space M ϕ,φ (R n ), if f M ϕ,φ (R n ) := sup R n φ(ϕ(,)) f ϕ, <, whee he supemum is aken ove all balls of R n and { ( f ϕ, := inf µ (, ) : ϕ x, f(x) ) ϕ(, ) µ } dx. Remak 2.4. (i) We fis claim ha M ϕ,φ (R n ) is aquasi-nom. Indeed, since ϕ is of unifomly lowe ype p and of unifomly uppe ype p wih < p p <,
6 YIYU LIANG, EIICHI NAKAI, DACHUN YANG AND JUNQIANG ZHANG we see ha, fo any x R n and < a b, ( ) p a+b ϕ(x,a+b) ϕ(x,2b) 2 p ϕ(x,b) ϕ(x,a)+ϕ(x,b), 2b whichfuheimpliesha, foanyball R n andf, g L loc (Rn )wih f ϕ, + g ϕ,, ( ) f(x)+g(x) ϕ x, dx ϕ(, ) f ϕ, + g ϕ, [ ( ) ( )] f(x) g(x) ϕ x, +ϕ x, dx ϕ(, ) f ϕ, + g ϕ, f ϕ, + g ϕ, and hence, by p (, ), f +g ϕ, f ϕ, + g ϕ,, whee he implici posiive consan is independen of. This fuhe implies ha M ϕ,φ (R n ) is a quasi-nom, namely, fo any f, g M ϕ,φ (R n ), hee exiss a consan κ [, ) such ha f +g M ϕ,φ (R n ) κ [ f M ϕ,φ (R n ) + g M ϕ,φ (R n )]. Thus, he claim holds ue. Moeove, fom he claim and he Aoki-Rolewicz heoem in [3, 42], i follows ha hee exiss a quasi-nom on M ϕ,φ (R n ) and γ (,] such ha, fo all f M ϕ,φ (R n ), f f M ϕ,φ (R n ) and, fo any sequence {f j } j N M ϕ,φ (R n ), γ f j j j N f γ, j N which is needed lae. (ii) If ϕ is as in (.3) wih p (, ) and φ() := s fo all [, ) wih s (,/p), hen M ϕ,φ (R n ) coincides wih he classical Moey space M p, sp (R n ). (iii) If ϕ(x,) := Φ() fo all x R n and (, ) wih Φ being an Olicz funcion, hen M ϕ,φ (R n ) coincides wih he Olicz-Moey space in [43]. (iv) If ϕ is as in (.2) wih p (, ),w A p (R n ) and φ() is as in (ii), hen M ϕ,φ (R n )coincides wihheweighed MoeyspaceM p, sp w ha he weighed Moey space M p, sp w [47]). (R n )in[47](obseve (R n ) was denoed by anohe noaion in Now we ecall he noions of ininsic Lilewood-Paley funcions inoduced by Wilson [48]. Fo α (,], le C α (R n ) be he family of funcions θ, defined on R n, such ha supp θ {x R n : x }, R n θ(x)dx = and, fo all x, x 2 R n, θ(x ) θ(x 2 ) x x 2 α. Le ϕ be a gowh funcion wih p p <. Fo all x R n and [, ), le ψ(x,) := ϕ(x,)/ϕ(x,). Obviously, fo all x R n, ψ(x, ) is an Olicz funcion and, fo all [, ), ψ(,) is measuable. Fo all x R n and s [, ), he complemenay funcion of ψ is defined by ψ(x,s) := sup{s ψ(x,)} (2.) > (see [36, Definiion 3.7]). On he complemenay funcion ψ, we have he following popeies. Lemma 2.5. Le ϕ be as in Definiion 2. wih p p < and ψ as in (2.). (i) If p p <, hen hee exiss a posiive consan C such ha, fo all x R n, ψ(x,) C. (ii) If < p p <, hen ψ is a gowh funcion of unifomly lowe ype p and unifomly uppe ype p, whee /p +/p = = /p +/p. Poof.
