2 . Inroducion A major focus of he ATLAS [] physics programme over he pas year has been he release of he firs resuls based on he full 5 and 6 TeV pp daase. The resuls cover he full breadh of he programme, including boh measuremens of Sandard Model (SM) processes and searches for new paricles and rare processes boh wihin and beyond he SM (BSM). Milesone resuls include he firs evidence for Higgs boson decays o boom quarks obained a he LHC, he firs measuremen of he mass of he Higgs boson from ATLAS in Run-, and he firs evidence for single op quark producion in associaion wih a Z boson. Analysis of Pb-Pb and p-pb heavy ion collision daa obained in 5 and 6 respecively has also yielded imporan new insighs, including evidence for ligh-by-ligh scaering in 5. TeV Pb-Pb collisions. In addiion, a number of imporan new resuls obained wih Run- daa have also been released, including he world s mos precise measuremen of he op quark pole mass, obained from differenial measuremens of lepon producion in op quark pair evens a 8 TeV. A major highligh is he firs measuremen of he mass of he W boson obained a he LHC a milesone for he ATLAS physics programme. In parallel o hese aciviies ATLAS has compleed preparaions for analysis of 7 daa, including reprocessing of he complee 5+6 daase wih new, more performan, reconsrucion sofware, and producion of more han five billion Mone Carlo evens wih new simulaion sofware wih refined deecor geomery and physics lis. Only a small fracion of he many ATLAS physics resuls released over he pas year can be summarised in a shor documen such as his. A few highlighs are provided below.. Searches for new physics wih 5 and 6 pp daa Searches for new paricles have been conduced wih many differen final saes. In no case has a saisically significan excess over SM expecaions been found. Sringen limis have herefore been se on he properies of many differen paricles prediced by a wide range of new physics models. Searches for excesses in dije mass and angular disribuions [] have se 95% CL limis of 6. TeV (5.8 TeV expeced) on he mass of excied quarks, 8.9 TeV (8.9 TeV expeced) on he mass of quanum black holes and.8 TeV (8. TeV expeced) on he scale of new lef-chiral coloursingle conac ineracions wih negaive coupling coefficien. Searches for dilepon resonances [] (Figure (lef)) have se a limi of 4.5 TeV (4.5 TeV expeced) on he mass of a Z in he Sequenial Sandard Model scenario, while searches for a Jacobian peak in he ransverse mass disribuion of lepon + ET miss evens [4] have se limis of 5. TeV (5. TeV expeced) for he mass of a W in he same scenario. Many searches for new resonances decaying o SM elecroweak (Z/W) or Higgs boson pairs have been conduced using final saes wih quarks [5, 6, 7, 8, 9]. Searches for he highes mass resonances have benefied considerably from he developmen of je subsrucure echniques for agging merged jes from boosed hadronically decaying bosons a high p T. Limis have been se on he mass of new saes in he framework of Heavy Vecor Triple models, for insance wih a PoS(EPS-HEP7)66

3 mass limi of.5 TeV (. TeV expeced) for a new resonance decaying o WW and WZ final saes in he HVT Model B scenario [9] (Figure (righ)). Searches wih diphoon final saes [] have found no evidence for new paricles, under eiher a spin- (scalar) hypohesis or a spin- (gravion) hypohesis. Searches for au lepon pair resonances [] have se sringen limis on he properies of new Higgs bosons in HDM and SUSY models, for insance excluding anβ > 45 for m A =.5 TeV in he hmssm supersymmery scenario. Searches for he producion of dark maer (DM) paricles rely upon signaures in which hey are produced in associaion wih SM paricles observed in he deecor, leading o evens wih missing ransverse energy plus a single reconsruced SM sae. The DM paricles are assumed o couple o SM paricles via a new mediaor paricle. Limis are herefore se as a funcion of he masses of he mediaor and DM paricles and of he coupling beween he mediaor and SM saes. Searches have been performed wih jes [], phoons [], Higgs bosons [4, 5], or Z bosons [6], recoiling agains ET miss, seing limis of, for insance.55 TeV (.8 TeV expeced) on he mass of an axial-vecor mediaor for massless Dirac DM paricles and a quark-mediaor coupling parameer of.5. In such models he coupling of he mediaor o quarks enables compeiive searches o also be carried ou using he dije resonance analysis described above []. In he case of his model he mediaor mass limis from his analysis exend o.6 TeV for massless DM paricles. - PoS(EPS-HEP7)66. Searches for supersymmery wih 5 and 6 pp daa Searches for evidence of R-Pariy conserving supersymmery (SUSY) have been conduced using many differen signaures. Inclusive searches for srongly ineracing squarks and gluinos wih jes and ET miss signaures [7] now exclude masses beyond. TeV for he firs ime. These searches are complemened by hose which require b-agged jes in he final sae [8], argeing

4 Highlighs from he ATLAS experimen models in which rd generaion squarks (op and boom squarks) are produced in gluino cascade decays. Here, gluino mass limis approach. TeV. These limis exend up o 5 GeV beyond he mos recen previously published ATLAS resuls obained wih he 5 daase. In he absence of significan excesses in hese inclusive searches, focus is increasingly being placed on searches for naural SUSY models wih ligh op and boom squarks and ligh higgsinos. Searches for direc pair producion of hese saes exploi improvemens in b-agging performance obained from he new ATLAS Run- IBL deecor [9], and improvemens in he efficiency for reconsrucion and idenificaion of sof lepons produced in he decay of nearly mass-degenerae gauginos and higgsinos. Top squark searches (Figure (lef)) have been conduced using signaures wih, or lepons plus b-agged jes and ET miss [,, ], covering models in which he squarks decay via, or 4 body modes. Boom squark searches [] focus on he simpler wo b-je plus ET miss final sae. In boh cases mass limis exend o 95 GeV for massless lighes neuralino LSPs (Lighes SUSY Paricle). Searches for direc associaed chargino and neuralino producion have been conduced wih signaures wih or lepons and ET miss [4]. In he case of cascade decays involving slepons he mass limis exend o.5 TeV for ligh LSPs (Figure (righ)). In he ineresing case of direc decays from mass degenerae charginos or nex-o-lighes neuralinos o he lighes neuralino LSP he mass limis exend o 58 GeV. In addiion, many searches have been conduced focusing on more challenging signaures (for insance wihou significan ET miss or involving long-lived paricles decaying in he deecor) which give sensiiviy o lower mass models, e.g. wih R-Pariy violaion (e.g. Ref. [5]), which migh oherwise escape deecion. m producion, b f f' ATLAS Preliminary / W b / W b / W b c b f f' W b - s=8 TeV, fb c m( / c / b f f' / b f f', ) < b m(, ) < m + m W / W b m(, ) < m / s= TeV - L 6. fb [CONF-7-] - L 6. fb [CONF-7-7] - L 6. fb [CONF-7-4] - Monoje. fb [64.777] Run [56.866] Saus: May 7 Observed limis Expeced limis All limis a 95% CL m ) m( May 7 Expeced limis Observed limis All limis a 95% CL + via l ν L / l, ATLAS-CONF-7-9, arxiv:4.594 via l ν L / l, arxiv:59.75 via τ ν L / τ τ, ATLAS-CONF-7-5, arxiv:47.5 via WW l, arxiv:4.594 ± via l ν L / l+l, ATLAS-CONF-7-9, arxiv:59.75 via WZ l+l, ATLAS-CONF-7-9, arxiv:4.594 via Wh ± ± lbb+lγγ+l l +l, arxiv:5.7 ± / via τ ν L / τ τ, ATLAS-CONF-7-5 via l R l+4l, arxiv:59.75 ± m l L / τ / L =.5(m + m ± ν, m = m ATLAS Preliminary, ) - s=8, TeV,.-6. fb ± m(,, ) m = m PoS(EPS-HEP7)66 Figure : Limis on he mass of he SUSY op squark for various decay modes as a funcion of he mass of he LSP (lef). 5 measuremens of he properies of he Higgs boson have opened up wih he full 5+6 ATLAS daase. The mos precise measuremens use he flagship H ZZ 4l [7] and H γγ [8] channels, which also formed he basis for he discovery of he Higgs boson by ATLAS [9] and CMS [] in. Assuming SM branching raios hese channels have provided a combined measuremen of he oal Higgs producion cross-secion of 57. ± 6. sa ±.7 sys pb [] (Figure (lef)), or alernaively a measuremen of he Higgs signal srengh µ =.9 ±. indicaing good compaibiliy wih he SM predicion. Measuremens of cross-secions for differen Higgs boson producion modes (gluon-gluon fusion, vecor boson fusion ec.) have also been performed, wih resuls inerpreed using he new simplified emplae cross-secion (STXS) framework []. Finally, differenial measuremens of producion cross-secions as funcions of various kinemaic properies (e.g. ransverse momenum of he Higgs boson) have been obained [8, ]. All hese measuremens indicae good agreemen wih SM predicions. The H ZZ 4l and H γγ channels have also provided he basis for he firs ATLAS measuremen of he mass of he Higgs boson obained wih Run- daa [4]. The measuremens in he wo channels are complemenary; he H ZZ 4l channel is saisics limied while he uncerainy obained from he H γγ channel is dominaed by sysemaic uncerainies arising from he phoon energy scale calibraion. In he former case he measuremens are consisen beween sub-channels requiring elecrons and/or muons, while in he laer case measuremens are consisen beween sub-channels caegorised in erms of convered/unconvered phoons or in erms of barrel/endcap phoons. The measuremens in he wo channels are consisen wihin.4σ. The combined measuremen of 4.98 ±.8 GeV is consisen wih he combined LHC Run- measuremen of 5.9 ±.4 GeV [5]. []). Disribuion of he invarian mass of b-je pairs in he cu-based V H, H b b search following subracion of all backgrounds excep SM V Z producion (righ aken from Ref. [6]). Key arges of he LHC physics programme are measuremens of Higgs boson couplings o fermions, which es he Yukawa secor of he SM. ATLAS has now obained he firs evidence a he LHC of Higgs boson decays o boom quark pairs [6]. In he SM his is expeced o be he mos common Higgs boson decay mode (BR58%) and hence direc measuremen srongly 4

6 consrains he scope for new BSM Higgs boson couplings. This decay mode is difficul o observe because of overwhelming QCD backgrounds. The mos sensiive channel explois he V H producion mechanism, where he Higgs boson is produced in associaion wih a SM W or Z boson. The ATLAS analysis combines measuremens wih, and -lepon final saes arising from Z ν ν, W lν and Z l + l decays. The primary analysis makes use of powerful muli-variae echniques based upon Boosed Decision Tree (BDT) classifiers. The analysis is cross-checked wih a cu-based selecion exploiing he bb invarian mass o isolae he signal. The performance of boh analyses is validaed wih an independen, separaely opimized, search for V Z, Z b b producion. In boh cases a clear V Z signal is observed (5.8σ observed, 5.σ expeced in he BDT analysis) wih a signal srengh (µ V Z =. ±.4 in he BDT analysis) consisen wih SM expecaions. The BDT (cu-based) V H search observes an excess above he background-only hypohesis in Run- daa wih a significance of.5σ (.5σ) wih an expeced significance of.σ (.8σ). The background-subraced m bb disribuion from he cu-based analysis is shown in Figure (righ). Combinaion of he BDT resul wih ATLAS Run- daa yields an excess wih significance of.6σ (4.σ expeced). The observed signal srengh of µ V H =.9 ±.7 is consisen wih SM expecaions. 5. Measuremens of (non-higgs) SM processes wih Run- or Run- pp daa A highligh of he recen ATLAS Run- analyses is he firs measuremen of he mass of he W boson performed a he LHC, which has been obained using he 7 TeV daase recorded in [7]. The shapes of he Jacobian peaks in he ransverse momenum and ransverse mass disribuions of W bosons decaying o elecrons or muons and neurinos provide sensiiviy o he mass of he paren W. The measuremen is calibraed by comparison wih similar measuremens carried ou wih Z bosons decaying o elecron or muon pairs. The analysis requires precise conrol of a very large number of sysemaic uncerainies relaed o boh he performance of he experimen (energy scales, reconsrucion efficiencies ec.) and he modelling of he W boson signal (especially he W boson p T disribuion relaive o ha of he Z boson calibraion sample) and backgrounds. Following five years of inensive work a final resul of m W = 87 ± 9 MeV has been obained, consisen wih previous measuremens and expecaions from global fis of oher measuremens sensiive o elecroweak physics (Figure 4). The uncerainy is equivalen o ha of he mos precise previous single-experimen resul obained by CDF. The uncerainy is dominaed by modelling sysemaics (4 MeV), emphasising he imporance of improvemens in heoreical undersanding and measuremens o consrain heoreical uncerainies for fuure resuls. A number of new measuremens of op quark properies have been obained recenly. Noably, ATLAS has made imporan new measuremens of single op quark producion. Previously, AT- LAS has observed or obained evidence for single op quark producion in he -channel, s-channel and he W associaed producion modes. Now, wih he full 5+6 ATLAS Run- daase, evidence has also been obained for Z associaed producion [8]. The analysis uses sophisicaed muli-variae echniques o separae he signal from he SM diboson, Z+jes and op quark pair backgrounds (Figure 5 (lef)). A significance of 4.σ (5.4σ) is observed (expeced). The producion cross-secion is measured o be 6 ± 7 sa ± 4 sys fb, consisen wih SM expecaions. PoS(EPS-HEP7)66 5
