In this rela2 tion, anaphora is the key factor that initiates the referent assignment. The descrip tion and comparison of the different form s of anaphora in both Chinese and English are the first step towards a more comp rehensive and fundamental p ragmatic2cogni2 tive interp retation of this phenomena.
