An important challenge that remains to be addressed in this context are spurious higher order resonances in current dnamical decoupling sequences as the can lead to the misidentification of nuclei or of different frequenc components of external signals. Here we overcome this challenge with engineered quantum sensing sequences that achieve both, enhanced robustness and the simultaneous suppression of higher order harmonic resonances. We demonstrate experimentall the principle using a single nitrogen-vacanc center spin sensor which we appl to the unambiguous detection of external protons. PACS numbers: 76.3.Mi, 76.7.Hb,7.55.Ge Introduction. The detection of single nuclear spins represents an important et challenging step towards single molecule magnetic resonance spectroscop and imaging [ which holds the promise for the observation of individual protein structures without the need for crstallization of large ensembles. The achievement of this goal ma have significant impact on structural biolog and medical imaging and ma also provide a new tool for the investigation of nuclear spin dnamics in non-trivial quantum biological processes [, 3. Recentl, research has made impressive progress in single nuclear spin detection using various phsical platforms [4 8, particularl in the highl challenging task of detecting single spins in external molecules [9 4. Among those phsical platforms, a sensor based on individual negativel charged nitrogen-vacanc (NV centers in diamond [5, 6 has demonstrated appealing prospects for applications in biolog and medicine, due to its biocompatibilit, nano-scale size and long coherence times under ambient conditions [7, 8. NV centers, shallowl implanted to within a few nanometers below the diamond surface, enable strong coupling between NV sensors and target nuclei, thereb promoting the detection sensitivit from a relative large ensemble of nuclei [9, to single nuclear spin sensitivit in small clusters of nuclear spins [ 4. Besides the interest in single molecule magnetic resonance spectroscop and imaging, single nuclear spin addressing also has an important role to pla in the precise coherent control of nuclear spin qubits, where it ma facilitate the realisation of quantum memories with long coherence times and nuclear spin based quantum information processors [9. One ultimate goal of single molecule magnetic resonance spectroscop using a single spin sensor is to detect a single nuclear spin and further infer the structure of a single molecule ianmingcai@hust.edu.cn [3. This would generall require a larger number of dnamical sensing pulses[4 such that even tin pulse errors ma accumulate and deteriorate significantl the magnetic resonance spectroscop signal [5 3. Furthermore, the effect of a finite pulse duration, during which the control pulses and the interaction with the nuclei/field simultaneousl act on the sensor, leads to spurious higher order resonances in the measurement data that ma lead to a misidentification of frequenc components in the signal. Indeed, as a prominent recent example these spurious resonances have recentl been identified as the source for the misidentification of nuclei in work towards nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscop of biological sstems [34. In particular, the ratio of gromagnetic moments µ H /µ 3C 4 of hdrogen ( H and carbon ( 3 C which leads to the overlap of different resonances preventing their unique attribution to specific nuclei [34. The presence of 3 C as part of the target molecule or the diamond itself is difficult to avoid making this an urgent problem to address [36. In this work, we both theoreticall and experimentall demonstrate quantum sensing pulse sequences with engineered phases that effectivel suppress spurious higher order resonances and are, at the same time, robust to pulse errors. In particular, we find that a tpe of MLEV- 8 pulse sequence [37 denoted as YY8 sequence ( π φ [ i N ( (π (π (π (π (π (π (π (π 3π as a representative example can eliminate unwanted higher order spuri- φ i ous harmonic response in nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscop and additionall can exhibit enhanced robustness. Using single nitrogen-vacanc spin sensor in diamond, we demonstrate the simultaneous suppression of both the nd and the 4 th order spurious resonance e.g. from the surrounding 3 C nuclei in diamond in proton sensing. We also observe the effect of the initial phase φ i in the XY8 famil pulse se- quences ( π [ N ( (π φ x (π (π x (π (π (π x (π (π x 3π i φ i [35. Based on engineered quantum sensing pulse sequences that suppress spurious signals, we detect the hdrogen signal in an unambiguous wa using shallow implanted NV center spins. Spurious signal and pulse sequence engineering. Without loss of generalit, we take an NV center spin sensor in diamond to illustrate our idea. We remark that the present result is also applicable for quantum sensing with the other twolevel phsical sstems. B choosing e.g. {, }, one can construct a two-level quantum probe for sensing. B appling a sequence of N equidistant (π θk pulses (which represents a π rotation around the axis cos θ k ˆx + sin θ k ŷ on the NV center spin with the inter pulse time interval τ (see Fig., and assuming that the (π θk pulses are instantaneous, the transition probabilit from the initial state φ + = ( + e iφ / to the state φ = ( e iφ / is given b [, 4 P(τ = φ U(Nτ φ +, where φ is the relative phase in the initial state (i.e. the initial phase of the π pulse, U(Nτ is the sstem evolution operator under the oint action of sstem Hamiltonian and pulsed action. In the context of nuclear spin detection, nuclear spins undergo Larmor precession in an external magnetic field, and produce a contribution to the signal with a characteristic frequenc given b the Larmor frequenc. When the pulse interval matches the Larmor frequenc of nuclear spin, i.e. ω L = /(τ, a resonance signal corresponding to the specific nuclear species is observed. The NV center spin state is coherentl manipulated b appling microwave driving fields as H M (t = Ω(t cos (ωt [ cos φ(tσ x + sin φ(tσ, ( where σ = (σ x, σ, σ z is the Pauli operator in the subspace spanned b {, } that are the eigenstates of σ z =. A (θ φ rotation around the axis (cos φ, sin φ, realized in the time duration [t, t + t d is achieved b choosing Ω(t = Ω and φ(t = φ for t [t, t + t d, with t d = θ/ω. In the case that the microwave Rabi frequenc Ω is much larger than the hperfine interaction, the corresponding evolution operator of a (π φ rotation is Uφ π = cos φσ x + sin φσ. Under realistic conditions, due to the finite power of the microwave acting on the NV center, the π-pulses alwas have a finite width (as opposed to instantaneous pulses, which can lead to spurious harmonic response and thus the possible ambiguit in the identification of nuclei [34. Such an effect becomes particularl prominent in singlemolecule magnetic resonance spectroscop as a large number of pulses is required to get a resonance signal from weakl coupled nuclei. To overcome such a serious obstacle, we need to carefull engineer quantum sensing pulse sequence. In order to illustrate the basic idea, we first consider a classical oscillating field H ac = A ac sin(ω ndt σ z with a frequenc ω nd = ω L/, see Fig.(c. We prepare the NV spin sensor into the initial state as φ + = ( + e iφ /. As the pulse has a finite width, the corresponding evolution of the spin sensor state is not a perfect π-rotation around ˆx or ŷ. Instead, the real evolution can be described b a set of rotations in the form of Rˆnk = exp ( iθ k ˆn k σ/, where σ is the spin operator and θ k = π + π β k + O(β3 k, ˆn k = (cos β k cos φ k, cos β k sin φ k, sin β k and β k A ac sin(ωt k /Ω, t k is the moment when the pulse is applied. Such imperfection in pulses give rise to spurious resonance signal. For the XY8 pulse sequence, in the scenario that we are interested in, namel A ac /Ω, the total evolution for one ccle is U nd = 8 k= Rˆn k = ( 8β Î + i β (σ x σ, where β = A ac /Ω. This leads to a nd harmonic response signal P nd = 8 [ sin(φ β + O(β3 [34, 35, which spuriousl indicates a frequenc component that is twice of the real oscillating field frequenc. Similar analsis shows that the 4 th harmonic response signal is P 4 th = ( [ + sin(φ β + O(β3 [34, 35. It can be seen that b changing the initial phase φ, nd and 4 th harmonics can be suppressed respectivel, as P nd vanishes when φ = π/4 while P 4 th goes to zero when φ = 3π/4. This ma require extra experiment complexit. We find that a tpe of MLEV-8 pulse sequence [ N(for (π (π (π (π (π (π (π (π simplicit we call it as YY8 pulse sequence can suppress both nd and 4 th harmonic signals simultaneousl and thus reduce the experiment complexit. Using YY8 pulse sequence, the ccle evo-

We remark that YY8 pulse sequence can suppress the other spurious resonances, including the (4/5 th, (/3 th and (4/3 th response, in contrast with XY8 pulse sequence [38. Unambiguous nuclear spin detection. Using an NV center spin sensor in diamond, we demonstrate experimentall the suppression of spurious high-order response signals in the detection of nuclear spins using engineered quantum sensing pulse sequences. The NV center is a point defect in diamond, which has a triplet ground state manifold with the spin quantum number m s =, ±. In NV-based nuclear magnetic resonance experiments, one applies a magnetic field B z along the NV axis that connects the nitrogen atom and the vacanc site, the NV center spin Hamiltonian is given as follows [5 H = DS z γ e B z S z, (3 where the zero-field splitting is D/π =.87GHz, γ e is the electron gromagnetic ratio, S is the spin- operator. As an example, we consider the detection of 3 C nucleus in bulk diamond. The hperfine interaction between the NV center spin and the nuclear spin is described b H I = S z A I = S z + a ˆ I x, (4 (a Îz where a and a are the longitudinal and transversal components of the hperfine interaction. The hperfine interaction will cause an effective fluctuating magnetic field with a characteristic frequenc that is equal to the Larmor frequenc of the nuclear spin. The transition probabilit of the NV[ spin state at time T is thus given b P(T = φ Tr I U( φ + φ + ρ N U φ, where U is the evolution operator, ρ N represents the initial state of the nuclear spins. The probabilit that the NV spin remains in the initial state P = P(Nτ is the signal observed in our NV-based nuclear magnetic resonance experiments, which provides us information on the nuclear spin, such as the tpe of nuclei and the hperfine interaction with the NV spin sensor. In our experiment, we polarize and read out the NV center spin in tpe IIa diamond (with natural abundance of 3 C using optical techniques. The microwave control pulses are generated using an arbitrar wave generator (Tektronix AWG7A and is amplified b an 8W microwave amplifier using a same channel. This allows us to avoid the amplitude imbalance between pulses, which otherwise would affect the robustness of YY8 pulse sequence [39. Therefore, YY8 pulses ma be more robust than XY8 sequence as is also evidenced b our numerical simulation [38. The amplitude and phase are tuned to implement the engineered quantum sensing pulse sequences. We appl a magnetic field (5G along the NV axis, under which condition the associated 4 N can be polarized to improve the sensing signal, and use m s = and m s = as quantum probe in our sensing experiments. We first measure the magnetic resonance signal of 3 C nuclear spin using XY8 and YY8 pulse sequences, see Fig.. It can be seen that the signal is almost independent on the initial phase, and both XY8 and YY8 pulse sequences demonstrate similar (I XY8 Sensing Sequence (II YY8 Sensing Sequence /3 /3 /3 /3 FIG. 3. The Rabi frequenc is Ω = (π5 MHz. performance. We further test the suppression of spurious high-order resonance signals using engineered pulse sequences. In Fig.3, we plot the dependence of the nd and 4 th harmonic signal on the initial phase φ using the YY8 pulse (d-f sequence as compared with the XY8 sequence (a-c. It can be seen that the spurious high-order resonance signals can be suppressed b choosing approximate initial phases of XY8 and YY8 pulse sequences, in which YY8 pulse sequence demonstrates better performance over XY8 pulse sequence. B choosing φ =, both nd and 4 th harmonics are suppressed simultaneousl using YY8 pulse sequence, see Fig.3 (d-f, while this cannot be achieved for an choice of φ for the XY8 sequence, see Fig.3(a-c. The amplitude of spurious high-order resonance signals are also relativel smaller using YY8 pulse sequence even when the initial phase is not perfect. These advantageous features of YY8 pulse sequence allows for the efficient unambiguous identification of nuclear spins, in particular it implies that YY8 pulse sequence can unambiguousl identif the signal from H, while avoiding the possible confusion with the 4 th harmonic signal of 3 C with no extra experiment requirement as compared with the alread widel used XY8 pulse sequence. We then use YY8 pulse sequence with the initial phase φ = to detect the magnetic resonance signal of H in oil on diamond surface. The shallowed implanted NV centers are created b a.5 kev N + ions into tpe IIa diamond. The Ramse and spin echo measurement indicates that the NV center shows T 3ns and T 5µs. In Fig.4(a, we measure the spectrum recorded b YY8 pulse sequence at different magnetic fields. The scaling of the peak frequenc with the magnetic field is shown in Fig.4(b. The linear slope of the frequenc 4. ±.3kHz/G fits well with the gromagnetic ratio of H (4.58 khz/g. As we show above, the YY8 pulse sequence can effectivel suppress the high-order spurious response, and therefore our measurement provides a wa to detect H unambiguousl. As H magnetic resonance spectroscop is ver important in various scenarios, the present engineered quantum sensing pulse sequence, particularl YY8 pulse sequence, ma find useful applications in single-molecule magnetic resonance spectroscop using quantum spin sensor. Conclusions We implement engineered quantum sensing pulse sequences that suppress spurious higher order resonances, a feature that will find application in unambiguous nuclear spin detection and more generall the identification of frequenc components of externall applied signals. Specificall, this eliminates the ambiguit in the nuclear magnetic resonance signal of single nuclear spin detection that is inherent to pulsed schemes due to the duration of individual pulses. The YY8 pulse sequences shows better performance in suppressing spurious response and are even more robust against the pulse errors than the widel used XY8 pulse sequences (e.g amplitude error. The simplicit and advantageous features of this tpe of pulse sequences make them an appealing choice for the applications in nuclear spin detection as well as the quantum control of nuclear spin registers.
