Consider the equation (.) with the Dirichlet boundary conditions for the shifted potential q( t) by any fix parameter t T = R/Z. Denote the corresponding eigenvalues by β (t) < β (t) <... 2 344 ANDREY BADANIN AND EVGENY KOROTYAEV Now we can recall the famous trace formula, i.e., the identity given by (.3) q(t) = α n= ( ) α n αn β n (t) t T. Dubrovin [6] and Its Matveev [7] determined the trace formula (.3) for the socalled N band potential, when β n (t) = αn = α n for all n N, t T and some N. In this case the sum in (.3) is finite. McKean van Moerbeke [] and Trubowitz [3] determined the trace formula (.3) for sufficiently smooth potential. Korotyaev [8] determined the trace formula (.3) for the case q L (T). We discuss the trace formula for the fourth order operator. Introduce the Sobolev space Wm(A), s where A is the finite interval or the circle, by (.4) W s m(a) = {f, f (m) L s (A)}, s, m =,,,.. Our main goal is to extend the trace formula (.3) for the fourth order equation (.5) y (py ) qy = λy, λ C, where the -periodic real functions p, q satisfy the conditions (.6) p W 4 (T), q W (T). Consider the equation (.5) with the -periodic boundary conditions. Let λ, λ± n, n N, be the corresponding spectrum labeled by λ λ λ λ..., counted with multiplicities. Note that the eigenvalues have multiplicity 4. The following asymptotics hold true: (.7) λ ± n = (πn) 4 p (πn) p p q o(n 3 ), as n, see [], where f = f(t)dt, f = f(t) dt. Consider the equation (.5) with the shifted coefficients by any fix parameter t R: (.8) y (p(x t)y ) q(x t)y = λy, λ C, with the Dirichlet type boundary conditions (.9) y() = y () = y() = y () =. Let µ n (t), n, be the corresponding spectrum labeled by µ (t) µ (t) µ 3 (t)..., counted with multiplicities. Note that the eigenvalues have multiplicity. The following asymptotics hold true: (.) µ n (t) = (πn) 4 p (πn) p p q O() n as n uniformly on t T, see []. Now we present trace formulas, which are similar to the second order case (.3).

TRACE FORMULA FOR FOURTH ORDER OPERATORS ON THE CIRCLE 345 Theorem.. Let (p, q) W 4 (T) W (T). Then the following identity (.) q(x) p (x) = λ ( λ n λ n µ n (x) ) x T, n= holds true, where the series converges absolutely and uniformly on x T. In particular, if p = const, then (.) q(x) = λ ( λ n λ n µ n (x) ) x T, n= where the series converges absolutely and uniformly on x T. There are numerous results about the trace formulas for the higher order operators, see McKean [], Ostensson [6], Nazarov, Stolyarov and Zatitskiy [5], Sadovnichii [], [], Sadovnichii and Podol skii [] and see references therein. The inverse spectral results for the fourth order operators on a finite interval were obtained by Caudill, Perry and Schueller [5], McLaughlin [], Papanicolaou and Kravvaritis [9]. The spectral problem for the fourth and higher order operator with periodic coefficients considered by Badanin and Korotyaev [3], [4], Mikhailets and Molyboga [4], Papanicolaou [7], [8], Tkachenko [4].. The resolvents Let B, B, B be the set of all bounded, trace class and Hilbert-Schmidt class operators on L (R), respectively. The norms of B, B, B are denoted by,,, respectively... The second order operators. We recall the following well known results about the second order operators h, h, see, for instance, in [3], [9]. Firstly, we consider the operator h y = y py acting in L (, ) with the -periodic boundary conditions. The spectrum of h is discrete and its eigenvalues α, α± n, n N, are simple or have multiplicity two. They can enumerated, counting with multiplicity, so that α < α α < α α <... The following asymptotics hold true: (.) α ± n = (πn) O() as n. Secondly, we consider the operator h boundary conditions given by acting in L (, ) with the Dirichlet (.) h y = y py, y() = y() =. All eigenvalues β n, n N, of the operator h are simple. We enumerate their in the increasing order β < β <... Recall that β n [α n, α n ] for all n. Moreover, the following trace formula holds true: (.3) p () p () = (α ) ( (α n ) (αn ) β ) n n where the series converges absolutely, see [, p.54].

346 ANDREY BADANIN AND EVGENY KOROTYAEV.. The fourth order operators. Introduce the self-adjoint operator H in L (, ) by (.4) H = 4 p q on [, ], with -periodic boundary conditions. It is sufficiently to prove identity (.) at x =. Thus we need to define the operator H in L (, ) by H = 4 p q on [, ], with the Dirichlet type boundary conditions Using the identity f() = f () = f() = f () =. (.5) 4 p q = ( p) V, V = q p p, and V L (, ), we obtain (.6) H j = h j V, j =,, where the operators h and h are introduced above. Let the operator h j, j =,, be equal to the operator h j at p =. Introduce the resolvents (.7) R j (λ) = (H j λ), R j (λ) = (h j λ), R j(λ) = ( (h j) λ ), where j =,. We have (.8) R j = R j R j ( h jp ph j p )R j. Due to asymptotics (.7), (.), (.) all resolvents satisfy (.9) R j (λ), R j (λ), h jr j(λ) B, on the corresponding resolvent sets. Define the contours C by (.) = { λ C : λ 4 = π ( n )}, n. We present results about the asymptotics, proved in Section 3. Lemma.. Let j =, and let n. Then the following asymptotics hold true: (.) R j(λ) R j (λ) R j (λ) = O(n 3 ), (.) h jr j(λ) = O(n ) uniformly on the contours, and ( ) (.3) λ Tr V R j(λ) Tr V R j(λ) dλ = o().

TRACE FORMULA FOR FOURTH ORDER OPERATORS ON THE CIRCLE Proof of the main results. Introduce the function (.4) Φ = Tr(R R ) Tr(R R ). Lemma.. The following identity holds true: (.5) lim λφ(λ)dλ = V (). n πi Proof. Substituting the identities R j = R j R j V R j = R j R j V R j R j V R j V R j, j =,, into (.4) we obtain (.6) Φ = Φ Φ, where (.7) Φ = Tr V R Tr V R, Φ = Tr V R V R R Tr V R V R R. where Let n. Identities (.7), (.3) yield ( λφ (λ) F (λ) ) dλ = o(), (.8) F = Tr V R Tr V R. Estimates (.) give Tr V R j (λ)v R j (λ)r j (λ) R j (λ) R j (λ) V = O(n 9 ), j =,, uniformly on contours, which yields Φ (λ) = O(n 9 ) and then λφ (λ)dλ = o(). Then identity (.6) gives ( ) (.9) λφ(λ) F (λ) dλ = o(). We have the Fourier series (.) V (x) = V where V sn = Let e n = n= V (x) sin πnxdx, V cn = ( ) V cn cos πnx V sn sin πnx, V (x) cos πnxdx, V = V (x)dx. e iπnx, n Z, and s n = sin πnx, n N. Define the scalar products f, g = fgdx and (f, g) = fgdx in L (, ) and L (, ) respectively. Identity (.8) gives F (λ) = V e, e V e n, e n V e n, e n 4(V s n, s n ) λ (πn) 4 λ n= = V λ V cn (πn) 4 λ, n=

348 ANDREY BADANIN AND EVGENY KOROTYAEV since we have the identities Then (V s n, s n ) = V e n, e n = V n Z, V sin πnxdx = V V cn, n. F (λ)dλ = V πi K N for all N. Identity (.9) give ( N ) λφ(λ)dλ = V V cn o() πi K N as N, then (.) yields (.5). Proof of Theorem.. Asymptotics (.7), (.) show that the series S = λ ( λ n λ ) n µ n n n= N n= V cn converges absolutely. Let S be given by S = (α ) n ( (α n ) (α n ) β n). Then due to (.4) we have S S = lim λφ(λ)dλ. πi n Identity (.3) yields (.) S p () p () Substituting identity (.5) into (.) we obtain = lim λφ(λ)dλ. πi n S p () p () = V (). Substituting (.5) into the last identity we have S = q() p (), which yields (.). 3. Proof of Lemma. Proof of Lemma.. We will prove (.) for R (λ). The proof for other R, R j, R j is similar. Let Then we have a k = µ k 4, a = λ 4, λ Kn, k, n. (3.) µ k λ µk λ = ak a (a k a)(a k a ) a k a a 3. Asymptotics (.) yields (3.) a k = πk πε k, where ε k < 4 k > N, (3.3) a k a k N

TRACE FORMULA FOR FOURTH ORDER OPERATORS ON THE CIRCLE 349 for n N large enough and for some N N large enough. We have (3.4) a k a = π k n ( ε k π k n ) k > N. 4 Estimates (3.) (3.4) give R (λ) = a 6 (N k= k=n µ k λ a 6 k= a k a ) π ( k n C 4 ) a 6, where C = N π k Z (k 4 ) < and this yields (.) for R (λ). We will prove (.) for j =. The proof for j = is similar. We have (3.5) This estimate implies h jr j(λ) = (πk) 4 λ (πk) 4 λ = πk a (πk a) ( (πk) a ) a πk a ( (πk) a ). k= (πk) 4 (πk) 4 λ a k= πk a π a where C = π k Z (k ) <, which yields (.) for j =. k= k n C a, We will prove asymptotics (.3) for j =. The proof for j = is similar. The integration by parts gives λ Tr V R (λ)dλ = λ Tr V (R (λ)) dλ = Tr V R (λ)dλ for all n N. Using identity (.8) we obtain ( ) λ Tr V R (λ) Tr V R (λ) dλ = Tr V ( R (λ) R (λ) ) dλ K (3.6) n K n = Tr ( V R (λ)qr (λ) ) dλ, where Q = h p ph p. Asymptotics (.), (.) give Tr ( R (λ)q(λ)r (λ)q(λ)r (λ) ) (3.7) R (λ)q(λ) R (λ) = O(n 5 ) as n uniformly on all contours. Substituting (.8) into (3.6) and using (3.7) we obtain ( ) λ Tr V R (λ) Tr V R (λ) dλ K n (3.8) = Tr V R (λ)qr (λ)dλ o() as n.

35 ANDREY BADANIN AND EVGENY KOROTYAEV Thus we need to consider Tr V R (λ)qr (λ), where Q = p h p ph. Firstly, we consider the case p. Estimate (.) as n yields Tr V R (λ)p R (λ)dλ = O() R (λ) dλ (3.9) = O(n 6 ) dλ = O(n ). Secondly, we consider the case h p ph. Using f k = f(x)eiπkx dx and the identity ( h p ph )e m, e k = where e m = e iπmx and f, g = fgdx, we have (3.) e iπkx ( xp(x) p(x) x)e iπmx dx = π (k m ) p m k, Tr(V R (h p ph )R ) = = k= 8π V p k ((πk) 4 λ) m,k= m,k= m k F (k, m, λ) = π (k m ) V m k p m k ((πm) 4 λ)((πk) 4 λ), F (k, m, λ) F (k, m, λ), where the series converge uniformly on each contour, n N. Moreover, the identity dλ ((πk) 4 λ) = and the decomposition { k m } = D D D 3, where D, D, D 3 are given by D = { k m, k n, m n} { k m, k > n, m > n}, D = { k n, m > n}, D 3 = { k > n, m n}, give (3.) Tr(V R (h p ph )R )dλ = F (k, m, λ)dλ = I (λ) I (λ) I 3 (λ) m,k= m k for all n N, where I j (λ) = D j F (k, m, λ)dλ. We have I (λ) = and thus we need to consider I, I 3. Consider I 3, the proof for I is similar. Identity (3.) gives (3.) I 3 (λ) = F (k, m, λ)dλ = iπ D 3 D 3 V m k p m k m k.

TRACE FORMULA FOR FOURTH ORDER OPERATORS ON THE CIRCLE 35 Consider the case k > n, m n, the proof for the other case is similar. Using V W (, ) and p W 4 (, ) we obtain (3.3) V m k p m k m k C k m 6 m k C k m 7 ( m k ) for some constant C. Define k = k n and m = n m [, n]. Then we obtain k m 7 ( m k ) k m 7 n. This yields k>n, m n V m k p m k m k Similar arguments show that k,m k< n, m n C k m 7 n = C n, C = V m k p m k m k C n k,m C k m 7. for some C > and then (3.) yields I 3 (λ) = O(n ) as n. Similar estimates yield I (λ) = O(n ). Then (3.) gives Tr(V R (h p ph )R )dλ = O(n ). Substituting this asymptotics and (3.9) into (3.8) we obtain (.3). Acknowledgments.
