A 4-H exploration activity series for Cloverbud members August 2018 Mechanical Sciences
August 2018 Page 2 Bike Safety Bicycling is an exciting 4-H project in Mechanical Sciences that you can learn more about after being a Cloverbud! Whether you have never ridden a bike, have a trike or just got your training wheels off, bicycle safety is something that everyone needs to know to be safe on the roads and sidewalks. Take some time to color in the safety signs below. When you are done, write what you think each sign means on the lines underneath each picture.
August 2018 Page 3 It s Electrifying! Electricity is another popular 4-H project in the Mechanical Sciences. Electricity is an important part of all our lives - it s what gives us light, helps cook our food and keeps stores and factories working. There are 12 electrical words hidden in the puzzle below. Can you find them all? 4 August 2018 Page 4 Start Your Engines! The Small Engines 4-H project can be a lot of fun. If you enjoy getting your hands dirty or figuring out how things work, this is the project for you! Look at the machines and tools below that have small engines in them. These engines are what make machines run. Can you name them all? Do you know what each one is used for? Give your best guess! This is a. It is used for. This is a. It is used for. This is a. It is used for. This is a. It is used for.
August 2018 Page 5 Big Rigs Have you ever seen a tractor and thought you would like to take a ride on it? Well, it ll be a few years before you are old enough to drive a tractor, but you can learn all about them in the Tractors 4-H project! Take a look at the image below to get started and learn the basic parts of a tractor. Keep in mind that there are many different kinds of tractors and some might not have all of the parts shown below. Arm Exhaust Pipe Steering Wheel Cab Bucket Reflector Counterweight Fender Step Front Wheel Radiator Driving Wheel
August 2018 Page 6 Wood Working Woodworking is the final 4-H project to explore in the Mechanical Sciences. There are so many fun and useful things to build out of wood, but before you can build, it s important to be safe! Read some tips below on how to work with wood, and be sure to keep them in your back pocket for when you are a graduated Cloverbud! Wear a dust mask when sanding wood. Small particles can be easily breathed in and irritate your nose, throat and lungs. Don t be afraid to break out the glue! Wood glue, when used with nails, screws or bolts makes a wood joint even stronger! Be sure to use a sharp pencil when measuring. A pencil with a blunt point can make your measurements off ever so slightly. After sanding wood, a tack cloth will clean the surface of dust. A tack cloth is a piece of cheesecloth that is treated with a sticky substance called resin. Be sure to practice with your paint on a scrap piece of wood first! Too much paint will leave runs or drips. Too little paint will not completely cover the surface. It takes practice to know when you have the right amount of paint.
August 2018 Page 7 Tool I.D. Whether you decide to explore the Electricity, Bicycling, Small Engines or Woodworking project, you re going to need to know some basic tools. Taking care of your machines and tools is the best way to stay safe and create the best products. Match the tool pictures below to their names by drawing a line from one side to the other.
