8 Á GHORVÁTH Remark The optimal positio of the regular simplex ca be writte geometrically i the five-dimesioal case too We start with that positio of the simplex whe the edge joiig the vertices s ad s lies i H ad the affie hull G of the remaiig vertices is parallel to H The maximal volume ca be get if we rotate this simplex aroud the orthogoal direct compoet s of the lie of s with respect to H by the agle ϕ max Before the rotatio we have that s = s = s = s = s 4 = s = u = u = Sice s is i that -plae which is spaed by u ad u we have the equality u = s + u Our rotatio restricted to the 4-subspace {s i= e i} is the idetity ad o the -subspace is geerated by s ad u it acts as a stadard rotatio We cosider the ew orthoormal basis { i= e if f f s u} where {f f f } is a orthoormal basis of s Clearly {s s s s s s 4 } = {f f f } hece we ca choose f to s s f tos s s s 4 = s 4 s adf to s s +s s +s s 4 respectively The orthogoal matrix of the basis chage is B = SiceB = B T wecageteasilytheewcoordiatesofthevertices Theewcoordiates of the vertex e i are the elemets of the i-th row of B multiply by / respectively The traslatio of the origi to the first vertex e of the simplex is equivalet to the subtractio of the first colum of B T from the colum vector of it thus the ew coordiates of the examied vectors are s = s = s = s =
9 9 s 4 = s = u = u = The matrix of the rotatio ad the respective rotated vertices are cosϕ siϕ siϕ cosϕ s ϕ = s ϕ = cosϕ siϕ s ϕ = cosϕ siϕ siϕ+ cosϕ s ϕ = cosϕ siϕ siϕ+ cosϕ s 4 ϕ = cosϕ siϕ siϕ+ cosϕ s ϕ = cosϕ siϕ siϕ+ cosϕ Sice we also have u ϕ = cosϕ siϕ siϕ+ cosϕ ad u = we get the calculatio of the previous paragraph showig that the maximal volume atteds at cosϕ max = + 7 Usig the otatio where a := + 7 ad b :=
10 Á GHORVÁTH 7 we get that the eleve vertices of the optimal polyhedro are a ± ± ± a b a b ± a+ b ± a+ b respectively The ormals of the upper facets are u ϕ max = ad u ϕ max = a b a+ b b a b a We ca imagie the correspodig body as the disjoit uio of two pyramids ad a simplex The commo base of the pyramids is a four-dimesioal prism defied by the covex hull of the vertices s ϕ max s ϕ max s 4 ϕ max s ϕ max ad its reflected images s ϕ maxs ϕ maxs 4 ϕ maxs ϕ max with 4-dimesioal volume a+ b = a+ b The apex of the first pyramid is s while of the secod oe is s ϕ max From this we get that the volume of the uio is a a+ b = 4 a+ ab = = + 9! The last part is that simplex which defied by the vertices ±s ϕ max s ϕ max s ϕ max s 4 ϕ max s ϕ + max Its volume is 4! givig the volume of the body: v = + 4! Sice the volume of the regular simplex of dimesio with edge legth is we get 4! immediately agai the ratio + of the previous paragraph
