1. Introduction The notion of a Hilbert C -module is a generalization of the notion of a Hilbert space. The first use of such objects was made by I. Kaplansky in 1953 [5]. The research on Hilbert C -modules began in the 70es in the work of the induced representations of C -algebras by M. A. Rieffel [9] and the doctoral dissertation of W. L. Paschke [8]. Hilbert C -modules are useful tools in AW*-algebra theory, theory of operator algbras, operator K-theory, group representation theory and theory of operator spaces. It is also used to study Morita equivalence of C -algebras, KK-theory of C -algebras, C -algebra quantum group. The theory of Hilbert C -modules is very interesting on its own. In this paper we shall view fundamentals of the theory of Hilbert C -module and discuss on some its aspects. 2. Hilbert C -module Definition 2.1. A pre-hilbert module over a C -algebra A is a complex linear space E which is an algebraic right A-module equipped with an A-valued inner product <.,. >: E E A satisfying (i) < x,x > 0,and < x,x >= 0 iff x = 0; (ii) < x,y +λz >=< x,y > +λ < x,z >; (iii) < x,ya >=< x,y > a; (iv) < y,x >=< x,y > ; for each x,y,z E,λ C,a A. Remark 2.2. Left pre-hilbert C -modules are defined similarly. Example 2.3. (i) Every inner product space is a left pre-hilbert module over C. (ii) If I is a (closed) right ideal of A, then I is a pre-hilbert A-module if we define < a,b >= a b. In particular, A is a pre-hilbert A-module. 2
Definition 2.4. A pre-hilbert C -module E is called a Hilbert C -module if E equipped with the norm x = < x,x > 1 2 is complete. Note that the Banach space completion of a pre-hilbert A-module, is a Hilbert C -module. Hilbert C -modules behave like Hilbert spaces in some way, for example: x = sup{ < x,y > ;y E, y 1} But there is one fundamental way in which Hilbert C -modules differ from Hilbert spaces: Given a closed submodule F of a Hilbert A-module E, define F = {y E < x,y >= 0, x F}. Then F is a closed submodule. But usually E F +F, F F. For example, take A = C([0,1]), E = A and F = {f A} f(1/2) = 0}. Then F = {0}. ( g F ;g(t) t 1/2 = 0. Hance g 0 by continuity) Pythagoras equality stating ξ,η H and ξ η imply ξ +η 2 = ξ 2 + η 2, does not hold, in general, for Hilbert C -modules. For example, consider A = C([0,1] [2,3]) as a Hilbert A-module, the function f(x) = 1 for x [0,1] and 0 for x [2,3], and also the function g(x) = 0 for x [0,1] and 1 for x [2,3]. Then < f,g >= fg = 0, f +g = 1, and f = g = 1. see [11]. Definition 2.5. A closed submodule F of a Hilbert A-module E is topologically complementable if there is a closed submodule G such that F+G = E and F G = {0}. F is called orthogonally complemented if we have the further condition F G. Not every topologically complemented is orthogonally complemented: Example 2.6. Let A = C([0,1]), J = {f A f(0) = 0} C 0 ((0,1]) and E = A J as a Hilbert A-module. If F = {(f,f) f J}, then F = {(g, g} g J},F + F = J + J E and G = {(f,0) f A} is a topological complement for F. 3
3. Full Hilbert C -modules Let E be a Hilbert A-module and let {e λ } be an approximate unit for A. For x E, < x xe λ,x xe λ >=< x,x > e λ < x,x > < x,x > e λ +e λ < x,x > e λ λ 0 Hence limxe λ = x λ It follows that EA=span {xa x E,a A} is dense in E and if A is unital, then x.1 = x. Clearly < E,E >= span{< x,y > x,y E} is a *-bi-ideal of A. Definition 3.1. If < E,E > is dense in A, then E is called full. For example A as an A-module is full. Let E be both a full Hilbert A-module and a full Hilbert B-module. Then a map φ : A B is an isometrically *-isomorphism if and only if it satisfies: x.a = a.φ(a) and φ(< x,y > A ) =< x,y > B (a A,x,y E) The fullness condition cannot be dropped.[7] 4. Adjoinable Maps between Hilbert C -modules Suppose that E and F are Hilbert A-modules and L(E,F) = {t : E F t : F E;< tx,y >=< x,t y >} t shall be A-linear and bounded. L(E,F) is called the space of adjointable maps and we put L(E) = L(E,E). The following example shows that a bounded A-linear map need not be adjointable. Example 4.1 Let F = A = C([0,1]), E = {f A;f(1/2) = 0} and i : E F,f f be the inclusion map. If i were adjointable and 1 denote the identity element of A, then for all x E;< x,i (1) >=< i(x),1 >=< x,1 >. Hence i (1) = 1. But 1 / E and so i cannot be adjointable. (compare this with Hilbert spaces) 4
5. L(E) as a C -algebra If t L(E,F), then t L(F,E). If G is a Hilbert A-module and s L(F,G), then st L(E,G). In fact L(E) is a C -algebra. Let E and F be Hilbert A-modules. For x E and y F define Θ x,y : F E by Θ x,y (z) = x < y,z >. Then Θ x,y = Θ y,x Θ x,y Θ u,v = Θ x<y,u>,v, tθ x,y = Θ tx,y Let K(F,E) =, the set of compact operators, be the closed linear span of {Θ x,y x E,y F}. It is clear that K(E) = K(E,E) is a closed bi-ideal of L(E). Example 6.1. In the case E = A, we have K(E) A given by Θ a,b ab.[6, Page 10] If A is unital, then K(A) = L(A). In fact if t L(A), then tx = t(1.x) = t(1)x = Θ t(1),1 (x) and so t = Θ t(1),1 K(A). If A is not unital, K(A) A andl(a) M(A), the multiplier of A, the maximal C -algebra containing A as an essential ideal. Theorem 6.2. If E is a Hilbert A-module, then M(K(E)) L(E).[12, Theorem ] 7. Dual of a Hilbert C -module For a pre-hilbert A-module E, let E #, the dual of E, be the set of all bounded A- linear maps E into A. E # is a linear space and a right A-module under (α + β)(x) = α(x)+β(x),(λα)(x) = λα(x),(α.a)(x) = a α(x). ψ : E E #,x ˆx, where ˆx : E A,ˆx(y) =< x,y > is anisometric A-linear map. Identify E with Ê = {ˆx;x E} as an submodule of E#. problem 7.1. Could <.,. > on E be extended to an A-valued inner product on E #? 5
W. L. Paschke showed that it can be done if A is a von Neumann algebra.[8] 8. Self-dual Hilbert C -modules Definition 8.1. E is called self dual if Ê = E#. Theorem 8.2. A as a Hilbert A-module is self-dual iff A is unital. Proof. Let A is unital and t A #. Then for all a A; t(a) = t(1.a) = t(1).a =< t(1),a >= (t(1) ) (a). Hence t = (t(1) )  A#. If  = A#, then i : A A,i(x) = x being bounded A-linear is of the form â for some a A. Hence for all x A,x = i(x) = â(x) =< a,x >= a x. So a is the unit of A. Theorem 8.3. If F is a self-dual closed A-submodule of a Hilbert C -algebra E, then F is orthogonally complementable. Proof. For each e E there exists some f F such that < e,. >=< f,. > on F. So < e f,. >= 0 on F. Hence e f F. so e = (e f) + f. F is orthogonally complementable. Saworotnow showed that every Hilbert A-module over a finite dimensional C -algebra A is self-dual [10]. If E is a Hilbert A-module and A is unital, definie Ẽ to be the set of all bounded A-module maps from E to A. Clearly Ẽ is right A -module. and the map x ˆx is an embedding of E in Ẽ. As Paschke demonstrate, there is an extension of the inner product of E to an A -valued inner product of Ẽ for which Ẽ# Ẽ [8]. Thus every Hilbert module can be embedded in a self-dual Hilbert module. 9. C -reflexivity Denote by E ## the A- module of all bounded A- module maps from E # into A. Let Ω be the module map Ω : E E ##, Ω(x)(τ) = τ(x) ;x E,τ E #. 6
Definition 9.1. AHilbertA-moduleE iscalledc -reflexive, ifωisamoduleisomorphism.(ω is isometry, using Θ x,x ) For Hilbert W*-modules, C -reflexivity is equivalent to the self-duality.[8] 10. Riesz Theorem for Hilbert C - modules Let E be a Hilbert A-module and x E. Θ a,z (y) = a < z,y >=< za,y >= (za ) (y)( ) and so ˆx K(E,A), whenever x is of the form za. Since EA is dense in E for each x E there is a sequence {x n } in EA such that limx n = x. But E L(E,A),x ˆx is continuous n (isometry). Hence ˆx = limˆx n K(E,A), since K(E,A) is closed in L(E,A). n (*) shows that every element of K(E,A) is of the from ˆx =< x,. > for some x E, a Riesz theorem for Hilbert C -modules.
