Exact and limit ditribution of the larget fitne on correlated fitne landcape arxiv: v [cond-mat.tat-mech] 22 Sep 29 Kavita Jain, Abhihek Dagupta 2 and Gayatri Da 3 Theoretical Science Unit and Evolutionary and Organimal Biology Unit, Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Reearch, Jakkur P.O., Bangalore 5664, India 2 Indian Intitute of Science Education and Reearch, Block HC, Salt Lake City, Kolkata 76, India and 3 Theoretical Science Unit, Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Reearch, Jakkur P.O., Bangalore 5664, India (Dated: September 22, 29) We tudy the ditribution of the maximum of a et of random fitnee with fixed number of mutation in a model of biological evolution. The fitne variable are not independent and the correlation can be varied via a parameter l =,..., L. We preent analytical calculation for the following three olvable cae: (i) one-tep mutant with arbitrary l (ii) weakly correlated fitnee with l = L/2 (iii) trongly correlated fitnee with l = 2. In all thee cae, we find that the limit ditribution for the maximum fitne i not of the tandard Gumbel form. Introduction: Extreme value theory [, 2] ha found application in variou divere field ranging from phyic of diordered ytem uch a pin glae [3] and driven diffuive ytem [4] to hydrology [5] and finance [6]. Here we are intereted in it role in a model that decribe the biological evolution of an infinitely large population of aexually replicating genetic equence. The (logarithmic) population of a equence increae linearly with time with the lope given by the equence fitne and the intercept by the number D =,..., L of mutation with repect to the reference equence [7]. It ha been hown that out of the S D = ( L D) equence preent at contant D, the population dynamic involve only the equence with the larget fitne at given D [8]. If the equence fitnee are uncorrelated random variable choen from a ditribution decaying fater than a power law, the larget fitne i ditributed according to the well known Gumbel ditribution []. However a everal experimental and theoretical tudie have indicated that the realitic fitne landcape are not completely random [9], we are led to tudy the extreme tatitic of correlated fitnee. In recent tudie of extreme tatitic of trongly correlated variable, deviation from the Gumbel ditribution have been hown numerically (ee, for example, []) or by analying the tail of the extremal ditribution [, 2] but very few analytical reult for the full ditribution have been obtained [3, 4]. In thi Letter, we obtain analytical reult for the full ditribution for both weak and trong correlation and how that it ha a non-gumbel form. Block model: We conider a block model [5] of protein evolution in which a protein equence of length L i repreented by a binary tring of and and divided into B block of equal length l = L/B. The block fitne f j (d) give the fitne of a block with d one and the jth permutation of uch d = ( l d) poible random variable, each of which are choen independently from a common exponential ditribution. The equence fitne i given by the average of the correponding block fitnee and two equence fitnee are correlated when they hare at leat one block fitne. An attractive feature of the block model i that the correlation amongt the fitnee and the tructure of the fitne landcape can be tuned with the block length l. For l =, the equence fitnee are trongly correlated and the fitne landcape i mooth, while for l = L, the model ha uncorrelated fitnee and the fitne landcape i maximally rugged. In the following, we work with even L and conider D L/2 a the reult for D > L/2 can be obtained on imply replacing D by L D. The number D of mutation i meaured with repect to the reference equence {,,...}. One-tep mutant, any l: We firt conider the extremal ditribution for the fitnee which carry only one mutation a thi cae can be olved for any l. Although there are L one-tep mutant, the number of equence with ditinct fitne i l a the fitne w j of one-mutant neighbor i given by w j = (B )f () + f j () B, j =,..., l () Since the cumulative ditribution P l (w, D, L) give the probability that all the w j are maller than w, we have P l (w,, L) = df ()e f() l df j ()e fj() Θ(w w j ) = Bw dfe f [ e Bw e ()f] l (2) Electronic addre: jain@jncar.ac.in, abhidg@iierkol.ac.in, gayatrida@jncar.ac.in
2 P l (w) w FIG. : Cumulative ditribution P l (w) for one-tep mutant hown for B = 3 and l = 5,, 2,4 (left to right) calculated uing (2). The inet how the data collape when the ditribution i plotted a a function of u = w B ln l. where Θ(..) i the Heaviide theta function. The cumulative ditribution calculateing the above equation i hown in Fig. for variou l. For l =, the ditribution P (w) = +(L 2) [ e Lw (L )e Lw/(L )] while the double exponential form e Le w i obtained for l = L. Thu we have an example of a family of extremal ditribution that interpolate between exponential and Gumbel ditribution a correlation are varied. The integral on the right hand ide (RHS) of (2) doe not eem to be exactly doable but for fixed B, it i poible to cat it in a caling form which turn out to be of non-gumbel form. Following an integration by part, (2) can be rewritten a e Bw P l (w, B) = ( e Bw ) l le Bw = ( e Bw ) l e Bw n= ( 2 B + n n dz z l ( z) (3) ) n l + n ( e Bw ) n, B > (4) It i evident from the lat expreion that in the limit l, w with le Bw finite, P l (w, B) deviate from Gumbel ditribution for B >. Since the ummand in (4) peak around n e Bw a w, the binomial coefficient can be approximated by n 2 B /Γ( ) for large n. Replacing the um in (4) by an integral and defining the caling variable u = w B lnl, we finally have P l (w, B) e le Bw Γ( ) dn n e n Bu le Bw + n = e B Γ ( ) B, e Bu where the lat expreion hold for all u except u and Γ(a, x) i the incomplete gamma function [6]. Thu the limit ditribution P l (w, B) i a function of u (ee inet) and i of traveling wave form F B (w vt) if we identify t by lnl and velocity v by B (alo ee (3) below). Note that unlike previou work [2, 4] that aume the ditribution to be of traveling wave form, here we have hown the exitence of uch a olution. Block length l = L/2, any D: A B i an integer, L/2 i the larget value of l at which correlation are nonzero. We now turn to thi cae with weak correlation and how that the ditribution i of non-gumbel form for any D. For B = 2, the fitne of a equence with D one can be obtained by averaging over the block fitnee with d one in the firt block and d = D d one in the econd block. A there are poible fitnee for the firt block and for the econd, the equence fitne take the following form: w j,k (d ) = f j(d ) + f k (d ) 2, d =,...,, j =,...,, k =,..., (6) where = (D )/2 for odd D and D/2 for even D. The above equation give ditinct w j,k (d ) for all d except d = D/2 for which a = d, ditinct fitnee are obtained when the index k run from j to D/2. Thu the number (5)
( (2l ) ( of ditinct random variable are given by (/2) D + l ) ) D/2 ( D mod 2) [6] which increae a l D. A we hall ee below, the extreme value ditribution depend on whether D i odd or even. (i) For odd D, the fitnee w j,k (d ) are identically ditributed a i evident from (6). The probability that all the fitnee are maller than w i given by d d = k= df j (d )e fj(d ) df k (d )e f k(d ) Θ(w w j,k (d )) (7) In the above expreion, the product Θ(w w j,k(d )) in the integral over f k (d ) require that f k (d ) < 2w f j (d ) for all j =,...,. It i however ufficient to atify f k (d ) < 2w f J (d ) where f J (d ) = max{f (d ),..., f d (d )}. Furthermore, a f k (d ) i poitive, 2w f j (d ) mut alo be poitive for all j thu retricting the domain of integration over f j (d ) to 2w. Thu we can write df k (d )e f k(d ) Θ(2w f j (d ) f k (d )) = Θ(2w f J (d )) J= j J Θ(f J (d ) f j (d ))( e 2w+fJ(d ) ) (8) which i independent of k. A a reult, the product over k in (7) can be done uing the baic propertie of Heaviide theta function. Thi immediately give 3 = d = J= d = d df J (d )e fj(d ) ( e 2w+fJ(d ) ) j J fj(d ) df j (d )e fj(d ) df e f ( e 2w+f ) ( e f ) () (9) For D =, the above expreion reduce to (2) with l = L/2. Following the tep imilar to thoe leading to (4), we rewrite the lat equation a d = ( e 2w ) + n= ( e 2w ) n (n + )(n + ) (n + )!(n + )! n!(n + + )! () To find the limit ditribution, we firt note that the factor correponding to d = in () i of the form (2). On comparing, we infer the caling variable for d = term to be D e 2w l D e 2w when l, w. Thi ugget that for arbitrary d, the product e 2w remain finite while e 2w, e 2w for large l and w. In thee caling limit, for large n, we can write (n + )!(n + )! n!(n + + )! ( n + d n + + ) d e /n = exp [ e 2u d /ne 2w] (2) where u d = w ln( ). Approximating the um in () by an integral, we finally get P L/2 (w, L) d = e 2u d dn n 2 e n e e 2u d n = d = 2e u d K (2e u d ) (3) where K n (x) i the modified Beel function of the econd kind [6]. Interetingly, the above ditribution for D = ha the ame form a the cumulative ditribution for the minimum energy in a random energy model with logarithmically correlated potential [4]. However, for D >, there doe not appear to be a ingle caling variable. (ii) For even D, ince the fitnee w j,j (D/2), j =,..., D/2 have a different ditribution than the ret, the fitnee are not identically ditributed in thi cae. Uing the reult obtained above for d < D/2 and eparating the contribution due to d = D/2, we can write d u d = df e f ( e 2w+f ) ( e f ) D/2 D/2 k=j df j (D/2)e fj(d/2) Θ(w w j,k (D/2)) (4)
By applying the ame procedure a for odd D, the integral over f j (D/2) can be evaluated to give e w. Within the ame caling limit a for odd D, we finally obtain P L/2 (w, L) e e u D/2 d u d = 2e u d K (2e u d ) (5) Block length l = 2, any D: For l = 2, although the equence fitnee are not only trongly correlated but nonidentically ditributed a well, it i poible to olve for the extreme value ditribution exactly. If n and n 2 denote the number of block with fitne f () and f 2 () repectively, the number of block n 3 with fitne f (2) at a fixed D i given by (D n n 2 )/2. Furthermore, a the total number of block equal B, there are (L D n n 2 )/2 number of block with fitne f (). Thu the fitne w n,n 2 of a equence with D mutation obtained by averaging over the block fitnee i writeable a 4 w n,n 2 = (L D n n 2 )f () + 2n f () + 2n 2 f 2 () + (D n n 2 )f (2) L (6) The cumulative ditribution P 2 (w, L) i given by... n,u,n 2,u df ()df ()df 2 ()df (2)e f() f() f2() f(2) n,n 2=n,l,n 2,l Θ(w w n,n 2 ) (7) where n i,u (n i,l ) i the maximum(minimum) allowed value of n i, i =, 2 which, a dicued below, depend on whether D i odd or even. Before proceeding further, we firt note that in the product over theta function in the above integrand, only thoe factor in which at leat one of the indice n, n 2 are zero need to be retained and the ret are redundant. To ee thi, conider the theta function with a given n + n 2. Then if f () > f 2 (), the fitne w n,n 2 < w n+n 2, o that the condition Θ(w w n,n 2 ) i automatically atified by Θ(w w n+n 2,). Similarly if f 2 () > f (), it i enough to keep Θ(w w,n+n 2 ). (i) For even D, a n 3 i an integer, both n, n 2 hould be either odd or even which implie n i,u = D, n i,l =. Beide, the condition n + n 2 D, n D hould be atified a n 3 i nonnegative. Counting the number of poibilitie, we find that the total number of ditinct fitnee increae a ((D + 2)/2) 2 for D L/2. Uing the redundancy argument given above in (7), we have [ df ()df (2)e f() f(2) Θ(w w, ) df ()e f() D Θ(w w n,)] 2 (8) It i eay to ee that the integral over f () i nonzero provided f () < min{α + β,...,(α/d) + β} where we have defined α = (Lw (L D)f () Df (2))/2 and β = (f () + f (2))/2. For α >, thi condition reduce to f () < (α/d) + β while for α <, we require f () < α + β. Thu we obtain df ()e f() D Uing Θ(w w, ) = Θ(α), we finally get ( α ) Θ(w w n,) = Θ(α)Θ D + β ( e α D β ) + Θ( α)θ (α + β) ( e α β ) (9) df ()df (2)e f() f(2) Θ(α)( e α D β ) 2 = w y dfe f ( e w ( 2y)f 2y ) 2 ( e w ( y)f y )(2) where y = D/L. The above integral can be eaily computed and an explicit exact expreion for the ditribution dp 2 (w, L)/dw i given by w 2e 3w 2e 2y 4y + 2y e 2w y + e w ( y) 2y The mean w and the variance σ 2 calculateing P 2 (w) are then given by 3w w + 4ye 2( y) 6y + 8y 2 + y(e y e 2w ( y) ) 5y + 6y 2 (2) w = y, σ2 = y y2 (22)
Thu the mean increae linearly with y but the variance varie non-monotonically - it initially decreae with y and then increae with the minimum at y = 384/ (ii) If D i odd, we require that either n i odd and n 2 i even or vicevera alongwith the condition n +n 2 D, n D. In thi cae, n i,u = D, n i,l = and we obtain (D + )(D + 3)/4 ditinct fitnee for D L/2. Following the ame reaoning a above, the cumulative ditribution for odd D can be written a 5 = [ df ()df (2)e f() f(2) df ()e f() df ()df (2)e f() f(2) [ Θ(α)Θ D Θ(w w n,)] 2 (23) ( α D + β ) ( e α D β ) 2 + Θ( α)θ (α + β) ( e α β ) 2] (24) The firt term in the above um reduce to (2). In the econd term, the condition Θ (α + β) require that < (D )f (2) < Lw (L D )f () and the condition Θ( α) can be atified if (i) Df (2) > Lw (L D)f () > and (ii) Df (2) >, Lw (L D)f () <. Putting all thee condition together, the econd term can be evaluated. However for L, the contribution of the econd term to (24) can be neglected and we obtain the ame reult a for even D. Concluion: We have preented everal analytical reult for the extreme ditribution in a model with tunable correlation. When the fitnee are trongly correlated and non-identically ditributed, full ditribution i obtained exactly. For D = and arbitrary l, we have hown that the limit ditribution i of traveling wave form. A the limit ditribution in the large l limit for D = and l = L/2 for any D are een to be of traveling wave form, we expect that thi form urvive for l O(L) and any D. The weakly correlated model with D = i found to obey the ame extreme tatitic a a random energy model with correlation. An elucidation of the connection between thee two apparently unrelated model would be intereting. Acknowledgement: K.J. thank S. Sabhapandit for ueful comment on the manucript.
