An extrapolation procedre is performed with respect to a parameter introdced by dimensional reglarization. While this treats typical IR singlarities at the bondaries of the integration domain, special care needs to be taken in cases where the integrand is singlar in the interior of the domain as well as on the bondaries. A doble extrapolation is devised for a class of massless vertex integrals. Qadrple precision reslts are presented, demonstrating high accracy. The comptations are spported by the se of general adaptive integration programs from the QUADPACK package, in iterated integrations with highly singlar integrand fnctions. rd Comptational Particle Physics Workshop September 2-25, 2010 Tskba, Japan Speaker. c Copyright owned by the athor(s) nder the terms of the Creative Commons Attribtion-NonCommercial-ShareAlike Licence.
2 1. Introdction For infrared (IR) divergent loop integrals, the integrand fnctions have non-integrable singlarities throgh vanishing denominators. Based on dimensional reglarization, the integral is expanded as a fnction of a parameter that approaches zero [9]. In this paper we report nmerical reslts for the leading coefficients obtained by convergence acceleration (extrapolation) of a seqence of integral approximations. The methods are explained in detail in [4], where also reslts are given sing doble precision arithmetic. In the present paper we give extensive reslts sing qadrple precision and show that in many cases the accracy can be improved to near the relative machine accracy. According to the asymptotic behavior of the integral, we can explore linear or nonlinear extrapolation techniqes. The asymptotic expansion gives rise to linear systems of the form n 1 S l = k=0 a k ϕ k (ε l ), 1 l n, (1.1) where S l is generally a scaled version of the integral I(ε), approximated nmerically. A linear system solver or a linear extrapolation method can be sed if the ϕ k are known fnctions of ε l. Otherwise, a nonlinear extrapolation may be sitable, depending on the natre of the ϕ k fnctions. For (small) ε > 0, the nmerical integral approximation may be affected by singlar integrand behavior which occrs at the bondaries and/or in the interior of the integration domain. The sample integrals in this paper pertain to classes of one-loop vertex integrals which are two-dimensional, over the nit triangle {(x,y) 0 y 1 x 1}. An iterated or repeated nmerical integration can be performed efficiently with the general adaptive integration programs DQAGS/DQAG from QUADPACK [14]. The expansions derived symbolically in [9] generally involve hypergeometric fnctions. We calclate the hypergeometric fnction nmerically in Section, sing an extrapolation to handle the singlarity in the integration interval. In Section 4 we present reslts for the case of one offshell (p 2 0) and two on-shell (p2 1 = p2 2 = 0) particles. The coefficients of the divergent terms in the integral expansion are calclated with an extrapolation as the parameter ε introdced by dimensional reglarization goes to zero. The integrals in the seqence have integrand singlarities on the bondaries of the integration region. Section 5 addresses IR divergent integrals with one on-shell and two off-shell particles, where integrand singlarities may occr in the interior as well as on the bondaries of the integration domain. In this case, the integrals in the extrapolation seqence with respect to ε involves an extrapolation to deal with the interior singlarity. 2. Extrapolation For a seqence {S(ε l )}, which converges to the limit S = lim εl 0 S(ε l ), an extrapolation may be performed with the goal of creating seqences which convergence faster than the given seqence, based on its asymptotic expansion S(ε) S + A 1 ϕ 1 (ε)+a 2 ϕ 2 (ε)+... In the context of series convergence we consider the limit of its partial sms. Some extrapolation methods allow smming divergent series to a vale referred to as anti-limit. A linear extrapolation yields soltions to linear systems of the form S(ε l )=a 0 + a 1 ϕ 1 (ε l )+...a ν ϕ ν (ε l ), l=0,...,ν, (2.2) of order(ν+1) (ν+1) for increasing vales of ν [12, 2]. The seqence of ε l may be geometric or another type of seqence that decreases to 0. As an example, Romberg integration relies on the Eler-Maclarin expansion of the integral as a fnction of the step size ε = h. Then (2.1) is assmed to be an expansion in even powers of h, for the composite trapezoidal rle vales S(h) with h=2 l, l 0. Vales for a 0 S are obtained for sccessive ν by solving the (ν+ 1) (ν+ 1) systems of (2.2) implicitly sing the Neville algorithm. More general seqences of ε inclde the seqence by Blirsch, of the form 1/b l with b l = 2,,4,6,8,12,... (consisting of powers of 2, alternating with 1.5 the preceding power of 2). The type of seqence selected inflences the stability of the process, which was fond more stable with the geometric seqence than with the harmonic seqence (with the Blirsch seence in between) [12]. On the other hand there is a trade-off with the comptational expense of S(ε), which may become prohibitive for fast decreasing ε. For the comptations in sbseqent sections we se scaled versions of b l, e.g., b l /16. If the fnctions of ε in the asymptotic expansion (2.1) are not known, a nonlinear extrapolation or convergence acceleration may be sitable [17, 16, 11, 8]. As an example of a nonlinear extrapolation method, the ε-algorithm [17] implements the seqence-to-seqence transformation by [15] recrsively; and can be applied when the ϕ fnctions are of the form ϕ k (ε)=ε β k log ν k (ε), nder some conditions on ν k and β k and if a geometric seqence is sed for ε. The actal form of the nderlying ε-dependency does not need to be specified. Table 1 gives the recrrence of the ε algorithm for a seqence S κ, κ = 0,1,... and depicts the layot of the comptations in a trianglar table.

Hypergeometric fnction A representation of the hypergeometric fnction is given by the Gass series F(a,b,c;z) = k=0 Γ(a+k) Γ(b+k) Γ(c+k) which has z = 1 as its circle of convergence and has an analytic contination defined by the Eler integral [1], Γ(c) 1 t b 1 (1 t) c b 1 2F 1 (a,b,c;z) = Γ(b)Γ(c b) 0 (1 t z) a dt, (.1) Rec> Reb>0, which denotes a one-valed analytic fnction in the complex plane ct along the real axis from 1 to. For a nmerical comptation where z R, we replace z by z+iδ and evalate the limit of 2F 1 (a,b,c;z+ iδ) as δ 0 by solving linear systems of the form (2.2) with ϕ k (δ l ) = δl k, k = 1,...,ν and S(δ l )= 2 F 1 (a,b,c;z+iδ l ), l=0,...,ν. Table 2 lists reslts for a problem set from [10] where a=l+ 1, b=l+ m, c=l+ m+n+1 at z=10 (real). The relative error tolerances for the oter and inner integration are set at and 10 26, respectively. Since b and c are positive integer, the nmerator in the integrand is polynomial, so there are no end-point singlarities. We se the general adaptive integrator DQAG of QUADPACK for the iterated integrations, with the 7-point Gass and 15-point Kronrod rles applied on each sbinterval in its adaptive partitioning strategy. Note that the weights and abscissae of the integration rles in DQAG are given to digits and the relative machine accracy in qadrple precision is of abot the same order. Table 2 gives qadrple precision reslts, extending the (10-digit) accracy of the doble precision calclations reported in [4]. As compiler we se the intel Fortran Composer XE with the -r16 flag. The calclations are rn on a Macbook-Pro laptop with.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Do processor and 8 GB memory (Mac OS X Version ). According to (2.2) we obtain S (ν) a 0 for the systems of order(ν+1) (ν+1), ν = 1,2,... The difference of sccessive reslts in E a (ν) = S (ν) S (ν 1) gives a measre of convergence. z k k! 4
5 Table 2 lists l, m, n followed by the reslt S (ν), the relative measre of convergence E r (ν) = E a (ν) / S (ν), the vale of ν and the time taken (in seconds) for the integrals S(δ l ), l = 0,...,ν, needed to obtain the reslt. The other times in the program are not taken into accont, inclding the system solving time which was measred and fond negligible compared to the integration times. While we cold have listed the reslt obtained after the error falls below 10 25, we instead listed the reslt with the smallest estimated relative error. As expected, better accracy is obtained for the smaller vales of l, m, n. 4. Asymptotics for one off-shell, two on-shell particles We first address the IR divergent integral J (p 2 1, p2 2, p2 ;n x,n y ) from [9] with one off-shell (p 2 0) and two on-shell particles (p 2 1 = p2 2 = 0), which we denote here by J (p 2 1, p2 2, p2 ;n x,n y ;ε) = 1 I n x,n y (4π) 2 (ε), with I n x,n y (ε)= ε Γ( ε) (4πµ R 2)ε x dx dy ( p 2) ε 1 = ε Γ( ε) 4πµ R 2 0 p 2 x n x y n y ( p 2 (4.1) xy i0)1 ε B(n x + ε,n y + ε). n x + n y + 2ε where p 2 = p 2 +i0 and µ2 R is a renormalization constant (which we will replace by µ2 R eγ E /(4π), γ E is Eler s constant). The introdction of the parameter ε pertains to the dimension reglarization techniqe [1]. When n x = η 0 or n y 0, we have I η,0 (ε) 1 ( ) C 1 p 2 ε +C 0+O(ε) ( C 1 = 1 η, C 0 = 2 η η ln( p 2 ) with (4.2) η 1 j=1 ) 1. j A linear extrapolation can be formlated sing systems of the form (2.2) with S l (ε l ) = ε l Î(ε l ) where Î(ε l ) I η,0 (ε) and ϕ k (ε l )=εl k. Table displays reslts for the real parts of the coefficients C 1 and C 0 in the expansion, for n x = η = 2 and n y = 0. In view of the integrand singlarity along y = 0 throgh the factor y ε 1 where the exponent approaches -1, and a second derivative singlarity along x=0 throgh the factor x 1+ε in (4.1), we perform the calclation of Î(ε l ) with the program DQAGS of QUADPACK [14], which is eqipped to deal with these end-point singlarities. DQAGS ses the 7-point Gass and 15-point Kronrod rle on each sbinterval created in its adaptive sbdivision strategy. We set the reqested relative accracies to for the oter and for the inner integral. Table lists the seqence of extrapolation reslts and shows how mch accracy can be reached. (After that, the accracy no longer improves; i.e., stagnates for a few steps and decreases). The difference between sccessive reslts provides a good estimate of the convergence. For this problem it sally gives a somewhat conservative bond for the actal error, in the sense that the difference with the reslt of the previos step is in fact a measre of the error in the previos step. 5

Extrapolated real vales. The final accracy reached for C 1 is abot (absolte error), (relative error). The accacy in C 0 lags behind and reaches abot (absolte) or (relative error). When n x = n y = 0 we have I 0,0 (ε) 1 ( C 2 p 2 ε 2 + C ) 1 ε +C 0+O(ε) with C 2 = 1, C 1 = ln( p 2 ), C 0 = π ln2 ( p 2 ). (4.) With relative tolerances of for the oter and for the inner integrations, we obtain the best relative accracies for C 2, C 1 and C 0 at ν = 15, of 7.88e-25, 4.e-22 and 4.0e-19, respectively. Note that the best accracies for this problem obtained in doble precision with integration tolerances of 10 1 (oter), (inner) are reported in [4] as.06e-12, 1.44e-10 and 7.99e-09 at ν = 11. The latter can also be compared with or 10 26, qadrple precision reslt at ν = 11, which yields.18e-14,.04e-12 and 5.24e-10, respectively. 5. Asymptotics for one on-shell, two off-shell particles In the case of one on-shell (p 2 1 = 0) and two off-shell (p2 2 0, p2 0) particles, the IR divergent integral is J (0, p 2 2, p 2 ;n x,n y ;ε)= 1 (4π) 2 J (0,0, p 2 ;n x,n y ;ε) 2 F 1 (1,1 ε,2+n x ; p2 p2 2 ) n x+ ε n x + 1 = 1 (4π) 2 ε Γ( ε) (4πµ 2 R )ε 1 0 dx 1 x 0 p 2 (5.1) x n x y n y dy ( (p 2 p2 2 )xy p2 2 y(1 y) i0)1 ε. (5.2) 6
7 For n x = n y = 0 we se the expansion with J (0, p 2 2, p2 ;n x,n y ;ε) C 1 ε + C 0 +O(ε) (5.) C 1 = 1 ln(1 z) (4π) 2 p 2 z C 0 = 1 ( ) ln(1 z) (4π) 2 p 2 C 1 + ln2 (1 z) z 2z with z= p2 p2 2 p 2 and the C 1 coefficient of (4.). In the sbsections below we will give reslts for two methods for the comptation of J (0, p 2 2, p2 ;n x,n y ;ε), the first based on (5.1) and the second on (5.2). 5.1 Comptation of J (0, p 2 2, p2 ;n x,n y ) with hypergeometric fnction We intend to perform an extrapolation with respect to the parameter ε for dimensional reglarization. According to (5.1), each term in the extrapolation seqence consists of a doble integral mltiplied with a hypergeometric fnction, both dependent on ε. We calclate the hypergeometric fnction nmerically sing the δ extrapolation of Section, to alleviate the characteristic nonintegrable singlarity on the real axis when it occrs inside the integration interval. Here z= p2 p2 2 p 2 in the forth argment of 2 F 1 in (5.1) is replaced by z+iδ. Ths in this process we need to evalate seqences of hypergeometric fnctions of the form 2F 1 (1,1 ε l, 2+n x ; p2 p2 2 p 2 + iδ κ ), κ = 1,2,... for ε = 1,2,... The nmber of κ-vales needed depends on the convergence for each (fixed) ε. As the exponents b 1= ε l and c b 1=n x +ε l in the integrand nmerator t b 1 (1 t) c b 1 of the Eler integral (.1) are non-integer, we se the QUADPACK program DQAGS to treat the integrand behavior at the end-points. Extrapolated (real part) reslts for C 1 and C 0 in (5.) and actal absolte errors are listed in Table 4. By setting p 2 2 = 40, p2 = 100, for the prpose of a nmerical example, we have that Re(z) = 1.4, so that the hypergeometric fnction has an integrand singlarity at t = 1/1.4 in the interior of the integration interval (0, 1). The relative error tolerances for DQAGS were for the oter integration and for the inner integrals. The maximm nmber of sbdivisions was set to 150 for J in both directions and to 00 for 2 F 1. For the dimensional reglarization extrapolation, the Blirsch seqence was sed starting at, i.e.,,4,6,.... For p 2 = 100, the integral in (4.1) is real and is mltiplied with the (complex) vale of the hypergeometric fnction. The real and imaginary parts of the latter are crrently compted separately which, for the real part, took between abot 0.44 and 0.55 seconds, and for the imaginary part between 0. and 0.41 seconds. Ths the time for the hypergeometric fnction comptation for each eqation in the linear system is nder a second and is dominated by the times for the 7

Note that the vertical glon propagator can be virtal so that the sqare of its momentm becomes negative. 5.2 Comptation of J (0, p 2 2, p2 ;n x,n y ) sing direct integration In this section we calclate the integral in (5.2) directly, which becomes highly singlar at y=0 as ε 0 and non-integrable for ε = 0, in view of the factor y ε 1 y in the integrand ε 1. It ( D) 1 ε 8
9 can be seen that (p 2 p2 2 )x+ p2 2 (1 y)=0 along a line that goes throgh ( p2 2 /(p2 2 p2 ),0) and (0,1). Ths for p 2 2 = 40, p2 = 100, this line rns throgh the integration domain, where it cases a singlarity that becomes non-integrable as ε 0. According with previos work (e.g., [6, 7, 5, 18, ]), we will replace i0 by iδ in the integrand denominator of (5.2). This leads to integrals of the form I (ε,δ)= 1 ε Γ( ε) 1 1 x x n x y n y (4π) 2 (4πµ R 2 dx dy )ε 0 0 ( (p 2 p2 2 )xy p2 2 y(1 y) iδ)1 ε C 1 (δ) + C 0 (δ)+o(ε) (5.4) ε to be compted in an extrapolation as δ 0, for each (fixed) vale of the dimensional reglarization parameter ε. The expansion (5.) or (5.4) with respect to ε jstifies a linear extrapolation. However, a linear extrapolation as δ 0 is not sited, as it cannot be assmed that the nderlying expansion is in integer powers of δ. Preliminary reslts are shown in Tables 5-6 for the real and the imaginary parts, respectively. We employ a seqence of δ κ = 2 8 κ, κ = 0,1,... in an extrapolation sing the ε-algorithm of Wynn [15, 17]. The crrent implementation incorporates a simple strategy with an extrapolation seqence of fixed length (= 18), which shold be improved with a termination criterion based on the estimated errors. Geometric seqences of δ with a smaller ratio shold also be tested. For the extrapolation with respect to ε the Blirsch seqence, 4, 6,... is sed. ν C 1 ERROR C 0 ERROR e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e-05.96e e e-16 Ex: e e-04 Table 5: Integration performance (DQAGS) 2, for rel. integration error tolerances (oter), (inner); Vertex with one on-shell, two off-shell particles, n x = n y = 0 and p 2 2 = 40, p2 = 100. 10 The reqested accracies for DQAGS are for the oter and for the inner integrations. The real and imaginary parts are calclated separately as the QUADPACK programs crrently do not handle complex fnctions. The imaginary parts converge more qickly than the real parts for this problem. We list the steps 1 to 8; the last for a 9 9 system. The reslts do not improve after that. Note that it is not necessary to solve the previos systems, bt the integrals need to be calclated to set p the system. Sccessive systems can be solved to provide an estimate of the error. Conclsions We se 1D integration programs from QUADPACK for the iterated integrations nderlying the extrapolation processes for IR divergent vertex integrals. We give preliminary reslts in qadrple precision which demonstrate that the calclations reslt in high accracy. For the vertex comptation with one on-shell and two off-shell particles we devise a doble extrapolation, since problems are introdced with integrand singlarities in the interior of the domain as well as on the bondaries. Many integrals reslt, which makes the comptation a good candidate for parallelization, especially when applied to more complicated diagrams and possibly in higher precision. More work is needed for improvements and extensions of these strategies and analysis of the nmerical methods and reslts. This comptation is a step toward a more atomatic nmerical handling of varios types of loop integrals, thereby circmventing the need for a precise knowledge of the location and strctre of the singlarities.
