1 UCI R 06 4 Sarching for spin-/ lptons Mohammad Abdullah, Kvin Baur, Luis Gutirrz, John Sandy, and Danil Whitson Dpartmnt of Physics and Astronomy, Univrsity of California, Irvin, CA 9697 A modl of spin-/ vctor-lik lptons is introducd, which srv as an altrnativ prob of possibl lpton compositnss. Possibl signaturs at th Larg Hadron Collidr ar xplord, and currnt data ar usd to constrain th masss of th hypothtical nw lptons. PACS numbrs: arxiv: v [hp-ph] Nov 06 INRODUCION A major opn qustion in modrn particl physics is whthr th standard modl frmions ar fundamntal particls, or whthr thy ar composit, such as stabl stats of mor fundamntal particls [][][][4][5]. Such compositnss could b idntifid by th obsrvation of xcitd stats, which has bn studid in dpth [6]. Hr, w propos an altrnativ possibility, th xistnc of vctor-lik spin-/ copis of th standard modl frmions, in which th lft- and right-handd frmions hav idntical chargs. In this papr, w propos such a modl, discuss th potntial signals at th Larg Hadron Collidr (LHC) and apply xisting LHC data to calculat constraints on th mass of spin-/ lptons. HEORY W assum that th nw spin-/ lpton filds ar chargd idntically to th standard modl lptons but ar vctor-lik; spcifically, th right- and lft-handd filds coupl idntically, for othrwis th modl would b havily constraind by a combination of constraints from lctrowak prcision data and Higgs boson obsrvabls [7]. his still lavs two options: th lptons can b SU() doublts, which mans thy will coupl to all lctrowak bosons, or SU() singlts, which mans thy will only coupl to photons and Z bosons. h doublt modl will b th focus of this work du to its richr structur; w will supplmnt it with ffctiv oprators that allow for dcays. h Lagrangian for such a modl can b writtn as: L = L fr + L gaug + L vctor () h first two trms contain th mass and kintic trms and ar givn by L fr +L gaug = ɛµνρσ L µ γ 5 γ σ D ν L ρ+im L L µ γ µν L ν () whr D is th covariant drivativ, l can b ithr, µ, or τ and th dnots th spin-/ lptons. If w xpand th drivativ trm, th fr part of th Lagrangian will b L fr = ɛµνρσ (l + µ γ 5 γ σ ν l ρ + ν lµγ 5 γ σ ν νlρ) +im L l + µ γ µν l ν + im L ν lµγ µν ν lν () Not that th chargd and nutral componnts hav th sam mass (m L ) du to SU() gaug invarianc. Expanding th covariant drivativ w gt th intractions with th standard modl vctor bosons which, aftr lctrowak symmtry braking, look lik L gaug = ɛ µνρσ ( [i W W + ν ν lµγ 5 γ σ l ρ + Wν l + µ γ 5 γ σ νlρ ) + i( + s W ) Z ν l + µ γ 5 γ σ l ρ s W c W i + Z ν ν s W c lµγ 5 γ σ νlρ W + ia ν l + µ γ 5 γ σ l ρ ] (4) whr all couplings ar wll masurd lctrowak paramtrs givn approximatly by = 4πα 0. W s W 0. s W sinθ W 0.5 c W cosθ W 0.9 Nxt, w mov to th ffctiv oprators without which th nw filds would b stabl; not that th chargd and nutral componnts of th nw lptons hav idntical masss. Sinc th compositnss scal is highr than th lctrowak scal, it maks mor sns to writ down oprators that rspct th undrlying SU() symmtry of th thory which rducs th numbr of allowd trms and paramtrs. For concrtnss and simplicity w will assum only th following ffctiv oprators
2 COLLIDER PHENOMENOLOGY L vctor = i B µν ( L Λ µγ ν L + Lγ ν L µ) B + i W µνa ( L Λ µσ a γ ν L + Lσ a γ ν L µ) W i g BB µν ( L µγ ν L + Lγ ν L µ) + i g W W µνa ( L µσ a γ ν L + Lσ a γ ν L µ) (5) whr Λ B and Λ W ar scals gnratd by som UV physics to which w ar oblivious. Othr oprators that w could hav considrd ar 4-frmion oprators involving both nw and standard modl filds, in which cas th final stat lptons ar dirct dcay products of th spin-/ filds rathr than scondary particls making thm asir to dtct. Altrnativly w could hav chosn lctrowak symmtry braking oprators that lad to mass splitting btwn th nutral and chargd filds allowing on to dcay to th othr. W lav an xploration of such possibilitis for futur work. BOUNDS Sinc th nw filds ar vctor-lik and do not coupl to th Higgs at tr lvl, thir lctrowak charg causs no conflict with masurmnt of S,, U paramtrs [8][9] (or, ffctivly, th lctrowak bosons slf-nrgy). h ffctiv oprators ar, in principl, constraind by masurmnts of th anomalous magntic momnt of chargd lptons, spcially that of th muon []. Such constraints can asily b avoidd if th couplings g B and g W ar sufficintly small. Ensuring that ths couplings ar small also nsurs that th ffctiv oprators do not compt with th gaug intractions in th production of th nw frmions. On th othr hand, if th couplings ar too small th nw filds would corrspond to particls with long liftims and would b svrly constraind by long-livd chargd particl sarchs [][][]. h rang 9 GV < g B, g W < 4 GV satisfis ths rquirmnts and w will assum such valus for th rmaindr of th work. W mphasiz that th xact valus ar, for a givn ratio of g B and g W, unimportant sinc thy modify nithr th branching ratios nor th production rat. Collidr bounds on spin-/ vctor-lik lptons ar potntially applicabl. Howvr, du to diffrnt choics in ithr th production or dcay channls, non of th analyss in th litratur ar dirctly applicabl. Morovr, it is possibl that th diffrnc in kinmatics du to th highr spin ar significant nough to altr th limit, so it is worthwhil to study this particular cas in addition. h production of th nw filds is prdominantly through Drll-Yan pair production with lctrowak gaug bosons as mdiators, and th cross sctions ar fixd by standard modl couplings for a givn mass. As xplaind arlir, th couplings of th ffctiv oprators ar chosn to b small nough to contribut subdominantly to production vn at th highst mass considrd. W+ *+ FIG. : Production mods of th spin-/ lptons via standard modl lctrowak bosons. h pairs that can b producd ar l + l, ν l ν l, l + νl, and l ν l, with th last two bing th most common sinc W production at th LHC is th largr of th thr bosons. As for dcays, th ffctiv oprators opn up a varity of channls. h allowd dcays ar shown in th tabl blow. ABLE I: Allowd dcay mods for spin-/ lptons l and ν. l Zl γl W ν l W Zν l W γν l W + W l νl Zν l γν l W + l W + Zl W + γl W + W ν l By contrivd choics of g W and g B w can turn off on of th dcays in th first two columns. All th othr columns dpnd only on g W and can only b turnd off by stting it to zro, in which cas th dcays in th first two columns must ithr b all on or all off. On good fatur of this st of dcays is that thr will always b som visibl dcay products, vn if w produc a pair of spin-/ nutrinos. In this work will limit ourslvs to -body dcays including lctron and muons, which rsults in promising signals; w lav th photon channls for a futur work. W will plac th limits on th bnchmark points listd in abl II whr th forbiddn dcay channl is indicatd in ach cas.
