ON M-IDEALS AND o O TYPE SPACES arxiv: v2 [mathfa] 15 Sep 215 KARL-MIKAEL PERFEKT Astract WeconsiderpairsofBanachspaces(M,M)suchthat M is defined in terms of a little-o condition, and M is defined y the corresponding ig-o condition The construction is general and pairs include function spaces of vanishing and ounded mean oscillation, vanishing weighted and weighted spaces of functions or their derivatives, Möius invariant spaces of analytic functions, Lipschitz-Hölder spaces, etc It has previously een shown that the idual M of M is isometrically isomorphic with M The main result of this paper is that M is an M-ideal in M This has severaluseful consequences: M has Pe lczýnskisproperties (u) and (V), M is proximinal in M, and M is a strongly unique predual of M, while M itself never is a strongly unique predual 1 Introduction The aimof this work is to show that Banach spaces whose definitions are given in terms of little-o conditions are M-emedded That is, to show that they are M-ideals in their idual spaces, the latter spaces which may e canonically identified with the Banach spaces defined y the corresponding ig-o conditions We will treat a large class of spaces, our main result yielding that a vast array of classical spaces studied in analysis in fact turn out to e examples of M-ideals: spaces of vanishing mean oscillation, vanishing weighted spaces of continuous, harmonic, or analytic functions or their derivatives, the little versions of general Möius invariant spaces of analytic functions, Lipschitz-Hölder spaces, and many more The notion ofthe M-ideal, as a Banach space analogueof a two-sided ideal in a C -algera, was orn in Alfsen s and Effros influential paper [1] As for M-emedded spaces, their systematic study was initiated y Harmand and Lima [8] We refer to the comprehensive monograph of Harmand, D Werner, and W Werner [9], not only for further notes on the literature, ut also for an excellent presentation of the availale theory of M-ideals 21 Mathematics Suject Classification: 46B4, 46B1, 46B25 1
2 KARL-MIKAEL PERFEKT From the point of view of this paper, showing that a Banach space is M-emedded carries the enefit of the immediate application of the rich theory associated with M-ideals For instance, M-emedded spaces have Pe lczýnskis properties (u) and (V), which the author in [18] utilized to characterize all weakly compact operators acting on spaces defined y little-o conditions Further examples of the strong geometric results availale for an M-emedded Banach space Z are given y the facts that Z is always proximinal in Z and that Z is the strongly unique predual of Z We shall return to these applications later in this section, as corollaries of the main result The present work is motivated y the fact that known examples of non-reflexive M-emedded Banach spaces Z often have the character of a little space vanishing at infinity in some sense, if one permits the use of vague terminology while the space Z acts as the corresponding ig space This is of course exhiited y the archetypal M-emedded space, namely, the sequence space c ; c is an M-ideal in c = l To oserve similar ehavior of many other concrete examples of M-emedded spaces, we refer for example to ([9], III1) [1], [15], or [19] The goal of this article is therefore, in a sense, to formalize the intuition presented in the previous paragraph In [17], the author considered a general construction of pairs of Banach spaces (M,M) a little space M defined y a little-o condition, and a ig space M defined y the corresponding ig-o condition One of the main results of the aforementioned paper is that M M in a canonical way The main theorem of the present work states that M is in fact an M-ideal in M This gives a new range of concrete examples of M-emedded spaces taken from harmonic and complex analysis, since examples of pairs (M,M) include vanishing and ounded mean oscillation in one and more variales, general Möius invariant spaces of holomorphic function, and Lipschitz-Hölder spaces Note that these spaces are all considered with their instrinsic norms We will in a moment define the spaces M and M, ut we refer to [17] for a detailed treatment of the realization of these examples within the framework The definition of (M,M) relies on several auxiliary ojects, which we now fix Let X and Y e two Banach spaces, where X is separale and reflexive The norm of M will e determined through a collection L B(X,Y) of ounded linear operators L : X Y By equipping L with a topology τ we are ale to give meaning to the statement that elements of M vanish at infinity The topological space (L,τ) should e Hausdorff, σ-compact, and locally compact, and for every x X the map L Lx should act continuously from (L,τ) to Y
ON M-IDEALS AND o O TYPE SPACES 3 The limit L is now given the standard meaning of L escaping all compact sets of (L,τ), or equivalently that L tends to in the one-point compactification αl = L { } of L The spaces M and M are defined y { } (1) M(X,L) = x X : sup Lx Y < L L and (2) M (X,L) = { } x M(X,L) : lim Lx L L Y = We assume that M(X,L) is dense in X under the X-norm, and that M(X, L) is a Banach space continuously contained in X under the norm x M = sup Lx Y L L To ask the question whether M is M-emedded y eing an M-ideal in M, wemustfirstisometricallyidentifytheidualspacem withm In [17] it was shown that M is canonically isometrically isomorphic with M (seetheorem21)ifandonlyifwe havethefollowing approximation property, which we refer to as Assumption A In the sequel we always assume that Assumption A holds Assumption A For every x M(X,L) there is a ounded sequence (x n ) n=1 in M (X,L) such that x n converges weakly to x in X and sup n x n M(X,L) x M(X,L) We are now in a position to state the main theorem Theorem 11 Suppose that Assumption A holds Then M (X,L) is anm-emeddedbanachspace Thatis, itisan M-idealin M (X,L) M(X,L) As mentioned previously, Theorem 11 has a numer of immediate corollaries In [17] the distance etween an element x M and the space M was computed Since M-emedded spaces are always proximinal in their iduals [1], [2] (the distance etween an element of the idual and the space has a least minimizer), we otain in conjunction with the distance calculation the following result Corollary 12 For every x M(X,L) it holds that dist(x,m (X,L)) M(X,L) = min x M x x M = lim L L Lx Y
4 KARL-MIKAEL PERFEKT A Banach space Z is said to e the strongly unique predual of Z if every isometric isomorphism from Z onto W, W a Banach space, is the adjoint of an isometric isomorphism of W onto Z From Proposition 21 of ([9], p 122) we otain the following corollary The reflexive case M = M has to e excluded Corollary 13 Suppose that M (X,L) M(X,L) Then (1) M (X,L) is the strongly unique predual of M(X,L) (2) M (X,L) is never a strongly unique predual Remark 14 Part (1) of Corollary 13 was previously shown, with a different proof, in [17] Theorem 21 implies that M is separale, hence also that M always is a separale space Godefroy and Li [7] proved that a separale M- emedded space is an L space (see for instance [14]) if and only if it is isomorphic to c Corollary 15 If M (X,L) is an L space, then M (X,L) is isomorphic to c and M(X,L) is isomorphic to l Remark 16 Let D denote the unit disk in the complex plane C, and denote y v : [,1] [, ] a continuous, decreasing weight function such that v(1) = The vanishing weighted space of holomorphic functions (Hv) = {f : D C holomorphic : lim z 1 f(z) v( z ) = } is a asic example of a space of the form M Lusky [16] has completely characterized the weights v for which (Hv) is isomorphic to c For the final corollary, we note that M-emedded spaces possess Pe lczýnskis properties (V) [6] and (u) [5] We hence otain the following, which is restatement of the fact that M has property (V) (see ([9], p 128)) Corollary 17 If Z is a Banach space and T : M (X,L) Z is a ounded operator, then T is weakly compact if and only if there does not exist a suspace F M (X,L) isomorphic to c such that T F is an isomorphism Remark 18 Several recent papers [3], [11], [12], [13] have made use of the construction of c -suspaces to characterize the compactness of composition and integration operators acting on spaces of analytic functions of M type These concrete operatorsall exhiit the ehavior of eing compact precisely when weakly compact This is investigated further in [18]
ON M-IDEALS AND o O TYPE SPACES 5 The remainder of this paper is organized as follows Section 2 discusses preliminaries of the spaces M and M, M-ideals, and some vector-valued integration theory In Section 3 the main result is proven 2 Definitions and preliminaries 21 The spaces M and M M(X,L) and M (X,L) were previously defined in (1) and (2), ut we now recall the precise formulation of the fact that M M isometrically For the statement, note that M can e considered a closed suspace of oth M and M Theorem 21 ([17]) Suppose that Assumption A holds Then X is continuously contained and dense in M (X,L) Denoting y I: M (X,L) X the adjoint of the inclusion map J: X M (X,L), the operator I is an isometric isomorphism of M (X,L) onto M(X,L) which acts as the identity on M (X,L) 22 M-ideals Suppose that Z is a Banach space A(closed) suspace J Z is called an M-ideal if the annihilator J Z is the range of an L-projection a projection L : Z Z such that z = Lz + z Lz, z Z An M-emedded space Z is a Banach space which is an M-ideal when considered as a suspace of its idual Z Note that there is always a canonical projection π : Z Z with range Z and kernel Z Z, (πz )(z) = z (z), z Z, z Z Here and in the sequel we freely consider any Banach space to e a suspace of its idual without special notation It is a asic fact ([9], p 12) that Z is an M-ideal in Z if and only if the canonical projection π is an L-projection Hence the fact that Z is M-emedded is equivalently expressed y saying that the canonical decomposition Z = Z Z induced y π is an l 1 -decomposition, Z = Z 1 Z 23 Measure theory The proof of Theorem 11 relies on studying duality via the emedding V : M(X,L) C (L,Y), (Vx)(L) = Lx, x M, L L Here C (L,Y) denotes the space of ounded continuous Y-valued functions on (L,τ), equipped with the supremum norm T C = sup T(L) Y, T C (L,Y) L L
6 KARL-MIKAEL PERFEKT Note that V isometrically emeds M(X,L) into C (L,Y) and that it similarly emeds M (X,L) into the space C (L,Y) of continuous functions vanishing at We will require a few elements of Y-valued measure theory We refer to [4], [17], and [2] The space of countaly additive Y -valued Baire measures of ounded variation is denoted y cav(l,y ) It is equipped with the usual variation norm µ cav = sup µ(e i ) Y <, where the supremum is taken over all pairwise disjoint partitions of L into sets E i The reason for introducing cav(l,y ) is of course the Riesz-Zinger theorem; cav(l,y ) is isometrically isomorphic with the dual space C (L,Y) and we will freely identify the two To e more precise aout the identification, we introduce the pairing T, µ etween a function T C (L,Y) and a measure µ cav(l,y ), (3) T,µ = T(L)dµ(L) L Theorem 22 ([4], [17]) For every l C (L,Y) there is a unique measure µ cav(l,y ) such that l(t) = T,µ for all T C (L,Y) Conversely, each measure µ defines an element l C (L,Y) through (3), and l C = µ cav Furthermore, eacht C (L,Y)definesan elementk cav(l,y ) y the formula k(µ) = T,µ, and k cav = T C The isometric emedding of C (L,Y) into cav(l,y ) given y T k extends the canonical emedding of C (L,Y) into C (L,Y) 3 Proof of the main theorem We egin y explaining the notation to e used in the proof of Theorem 11 For m M(X,L), m V 1 acts on VM(X,L) C (L,Y), which we as in Theorem 22 view as a suspace of cav(l,y ) By the Hahn-Banach theorem, m V 1 hence extends to a functional m cav(l,y ) satisfying m = m Applying the canonical decomposition Z = Z Z with Z = C (L,Y) we otain cav(l,y ) = cav(l,y ) C (L,Y), and we decompose m accordingly, m = m ω + m s, m ω cav(l,y ), m s C (L,Y) On the other hand, letting I : M (X,L) M(X,L) e the isometric isomorphism of 21, we otain a second decomposition m I =
(m I) ω +(m I) s from ON M-IDEALS AND o O TYPE SPACES 7 M(X,L) M (X,L) = M (X,L) M (X,L) Here (m I) ω M (X,L) and (m I) s M (X,L) Claim 35 of [17] amounts to the fact that the first decomposition is an extension of the second We restate this here, as a lemma Lemma 31 In the aove notation, we have and as functionals on M (X,L) m ω V I = (m I) ω m s V I = (m I) s, We are now prepared to prove the main theorem Theorem 11 M (X,L) is an M-ideal in M(X,L) That is, M(X,L) M (X,L) = M (X,L) 1 M (X,L) Proof Let h M (X,L) and define m M(X,L) y m = h I 1 We employ the notation of this section, so that constructs involving m are defined as aove Let µ cav(l,y ) e the measure corresponding to m ω, which in particular means that m ω (T) = T(L)dµ(L), T C (L,Y) L Denote y l the restriction of m s to C (L,Y), and let m = m C (L,Y) = µ+l Here and in the remainder of the proof we understand µ as a functional on C (L,Y), as well as a measure in cav(l,y ), y slight ause of notation which is justified in Theorem 22 Let K 1 K 2 e an increasing sequence of compact Baire measuralesusets of(l,τ)suchthatl = n=1 K n Denote, asefore, y αl = L { } the one point compactification of L For each n, let s n : αl [,1] e a continuous function such that s 1 n (1) K n and s n ( ) = Now let µ n = µ Kn e the restriction of the measure µ to K n, and consider the functional m n = µ n +l acting on C (L,Y) For fixed n, given ε >, let S,T C (L,Y) e such that S C = T C = 1, µ n (S) > µ n C ε, l(t) > l C ε
8 KARL-MIKAEL PERFEKT Note that y construction we have m n (s n S +(1 s n )T) = µ n (s n S)+l((1 s n )T) = µ n (S)+l(T) > µ n C 2ε Oserving that s n S +(1 s n )T C 1, we deduce in letting ε that m n C = µ n C Since µ µ n C µ µ n cav, we otain y also letting n that m C = µ C Since m M = m C = m cav, we conclude that m M = µ C In view of Lemma 31 we get the following inequality: h M = m M = µ C where = m ω C + m s C m ω (VM) + m s (VM) = m ω V M + m s V M = m ω V I M = (m I) ω M = h ω M + h s M + m s V I M + (m I) s M, h ω = (m I) ω M (X,L), h s = (m I) s M (X,L), and h = h ω +h s To finish the proof we only need to note the opposite inequality h M h ω M + h s M, which is ovious References [1] Alfsen, E, Effros, E, Structure in real Banach spaces I, II, Ann of Math 96 (1972), ; iid [2] Ando, T, Closed range theorems for convex sets and linear liftings, Pacific J Math 44 (1973), [3] Contreras, M D, Diaz-Madrigal, S and Vukotic D, Compact and weakly compact composition operators from the Bloch space into Möius invariant spaces, J Math Anal Appl 415 (214),
