MORE WELLS MORE OIL?

Why IORSim? We know fluid chemistry affects flow properties on core scale (~ cm). Compaction and wettability in chalk 2. Water diverging How to translate core scale knowledge/processes to field scale? Implementation of IOR processes Interpretation of field data

NaCl Effect of sulphate on oil production NaCl NaCl Na 2 SO 4 Na 2 SO 4 Na 2 SO 4 R. Ahsan, M. V. Madland, F. Bratteli, A. Hiorth A STUDY OF SULPHATE IONS - EFFECTS ON AGEING AND IMBIBITION CAPILLARY PRESSURE CURVE SCA, 34 (22)

Molality Ion (Total).28 - HCO CO 3.27 Cl -.56 SO 4 2- % 8% 6% 4% 2% % Anion complexes In Seawater SO4-- HCO3- CO3-- Cl- Free Ion Ca-anion Mg-anion Na-anion K-anion

IORSim overview Originally developed as BUGSIM, in order to interpret microbial enhanced oil recovery (MEOR) experiments 3D grids (Cartesian, radial), based on a black oil formulation Includes several capabilities : Bacteria, substrates and nutrients (MEOR) Silicate Polymers Surfactants Geochemical components (e.g., ions, aqueous Tracers complexes, minerals, charged surfaces) Aims to provide physically sound models for capturing EOR mechanisms

D integration Global level Flow Local (Block) level non linear chemistry Block-by-block upstream integration Chemical reactions Mass in Dissolution, precipitation, ion exchange, surface complexation Mass out 2 N c in, (t + Δt) c in,2 (t + Δt) c in,n (t + Δt)

Can we extend to 2D? Yes, if there are no flow loops (tear up the loops) 3x3 Example Renumbering of ECLIPSE grid implicit integration of the concentrations if no flow loops are detected If flow loops, explicit couplings are inserted to tear up the flow loops The algorithm is fast ( O(N) ) Similar ideas: Natvig, J.R. and Lie, K.A. [28]. J. Comp. Phys. 227(24), 8 24.
