3 Round Tables Seven round tables were held by the group since August 2016 (Chart 1). At each round table the presenter suggested one or more articles and/or book chapters as a reference for the discussions. For the round table on the Carajás Mineral Province we had the professor of the Department of Geology of UFPR Carlos Eduardo de Mesquita Barros (Fig.1) as the presenter, a Coffee Break was given to the participants.

Lecture: Jaguar Carajás hydrothermal Ni deposit The talk "Jaguar - Carajás hydrothermal Ni deposit" was given by the geologist Mariana Ferraz, she presented the results of her master's degree from the University of Brasília, held on April 27th, 2017 (Fig.2). The focus was to present the Jaguar nickel deposit, which is the first example of a world class potential that cannot be explained by magmatic/surface processes involving ultramafic rocks, forming an unpublished mineralizing model developed by Brazilian researchers. The deposit is inserted in the context of hydrothermal gold and copper deposits of the Carajás metalogenetic province, in Pará state, Brazilian Amazon region. It is located in the Carajás and Rio Maria Domains, in Tucumã province. This Archaean province (2.8 Ga) covers metavolcanics, ultramafic rocks with spinifex, mafic and felsic (there were three magmatic events), quartzites, shales, phyllites and banded iron formations. It occurs in the Granite-Greenstone

5 Terrain of Southern Pará and the Itacaiúnas Shear Belt, and the intersection of large lineaments is an important prospective guide. The subvolcanic rocks are the hosts of nickel mineralization, which had hydrothermal alterations, generating two types of ore: Type 1, characterized by veins, venules and stringer; and type 2, which involves gaps. This is less abundant, but higher content. An important feature of the hydrothermal alteration is sodium depletion, with a high content of fluorine not accompanied by chlorine. The hydrothermal alteration is much more enriched in light rare earth elements than the host rock. The fluorine anomaly suggests an important role of volatiles in the transport of metals. The main ore is pyrite, and millerite is also common, which is typical of hydrothermal nickel deposits. The Jaguar deposit has much more similar characteristics with an IOCG deposit than an endomagmatic nickel. The bodies are upright, and there is no direct association with ultramafic rocks. 6 X Simpósio Sul Brasileiro de Geologia Between June 5th and 7th, 2017, the X Southern Brazilian Geology Symposium was held in the city of Curitiba-Paraná State. During the event the group participated with the exhibition of a booth with rock samples of different ore types and also with the sale of a raffle and stickers (Fig.3) in order to raise funds. During the Symposium there was also the opportunity to connect other Student Chapters from Brazil, a meeting was held with members of the Student Chapter of Paraná (UFPR SEG Student Chapter), Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS SEG Student Chapter) and São Paulo (USP SEG Student Chapter) (Fig.3). At the meeting we shared experiences about the operation with groups with more experience and possible joint events and contacts, a very productive conversation. Also during the event, Student Chapter members presented their research papers developed at the University in the form of panels (Fig.4).

XII SEGEPAR On August 29th, 2017 members of the Student Chapter gave a talk (Fig.5) during the XII Week of Geological Studies of Paraná (SEGEPAR), the purpose of the presentation was about the development of the group and also the results of the excursion to the Quadrilátero Ferrífero in July.

8 Fig.5: Talk about the UFPR SEG Student Chapter at the SEGEPAR. Fieldtrip to Quadrilátero Ferrífero The technical visit to Quadrilátero Ferrífero (QF) began on July 17th and ended on July 22 nd. UFPR SEG visited open pit mines of three companies, as well as a lecture about the regional geology of QF at UFMG with SEG Student Chapter partners. The purpose of the trip was to visit one of the largest mineral provinces in the world and to understand the geological settings, as well as the metallogenesis. In addition to the geological and economic importance, QF is a historical region for the development of mining in Brazil. UFPR SEG also visited three mining companies: AngloGold Ashanti (Sabará, Minas Gerais) Companhia Siderúrgica Nacional (Congonhas, Minas Gerais) and Vale (Nova Lima, Minas Gerais). These mines are among the largest producers of Au or Fe in Brazil.

9 Lectures at UFMG Two lectures on the geology and mineral deposits of QF were organized by UFMG SEG, and held on July 18th at UFMG Geosciences Institute in Belo Horizonte (Fig.6) and included participation from 25 people. Fig.6: UFPR and UFMG SEG participants and professors Rosaline e Lydia. "Examples of Iron Deposits in Quadrilátero Ferrífero", was presented by Professor Rosaline Cristina Figueiredo e Silva. General aspects of the formations that compose the São Francisco Craton were reviewed, specifically the stratigraphy of the Minas Supergroup, where the iron deposits in the region are concentrated. These deposits are part of the Cauê Formation and they are Paleoproterozoic superior type BIF composed by itabirites and massive hematite. Hypogenic and supergenic processes are associated with high concentrations of iron. "Gold in Brazil: main deposits, production and prospects", presented by Professor Lydia Lobato, covered the main metallogenetic systems that generated the largest gold deposits in Brazil: orogenic, IOCG and hydrothermal magmatic. Emphasis was given to Au-orogenic type deposits in Rio das Velhas Greenstone Belt of São Francisco Craton, among them the Archean deposits of Lamego and Cuiabá, both hosted in BIFs.

10 Scheduled Activities Leapfrog mini-course This mini course is a result of the interaction between the Student Chapter UFPR and the company LeapFrog Geology, in Brazil represented by the company ARENZ Geo Brasil Tecnologia LTDA. In addition to the mini-course, it was possible a partnership agreement between the company and the Student Chapter which resulted in 10 licenses for the Geology Department of UFPR. These licenses aim to encourage the use of geological modeling software in research and incorporate this knowledge in classes too, a better preparation of students for the market. The mini-course will be taught by a certificated professional of ARENZ, it will be a two-day course and it will happen in October. I National Meeting of Economic Geology The first National Economic Geology Meeting will be held from May 19th to 20th, 2018, in Ouro Preto-MG, it will be a joint meeting with SIMEXMIN - Brazilian Symposium on Mineral Exploration, which is a traditional biennial event promoted by ADIMB - Agency for Technological Development of Brazilian Mineral Industry. It will be organized in partnership with all the Brazilian SEG Student Chapters, with the purpose of publicizing students research related to Economic Geology and promoting an integration between professionals and students.
