ASX Announcement 2 April 2012 Substantial Upgrade to Underground Coal Resource at Doyles Creek Highlights: Infill drilling has increased Measured Resources by 248% to 23.1Mt from 9.3Mt. Measured and Indicated Resources increased by 10.4% to from 129.1Mt. The low ash (<8%) semi-soft coking coal Whynot seam Measured and Indicated Resources now total 55.3Mt - sufficient for the initial 10 years of mine production. No washing of this seam is required. Upgraded Measured and Indicated Resources support the potential development of the Doyles Creek Underground Mine and Training School with an initial life of at least 21 years as outlined in the recently published Project Overview Document submitted to Planning NSW. Pre Feasibility Studies are on track for completion in June Assessment Lease applications lodged over EL 7270 with Trade and Investment Resources and Energy. 2 The Directors of NuCoal Resources Ltd (ASX: NCR) are pleased to announce an upgraded JORC Resource Statement prepared by independent consultants Palaris Mining Pty Ltd ( Palaris ) following the completion of a significant mineral resource upgrade program of infill drilling over the past 3 months. The JORC Resource Statement for the 100% owned Doyles Creek Project has been upgraded with 23.1Mt reported in the Measured category and 119.3Mt now reported in the Indicated category. Measured and Indicated Resources have increased by 10.4% on the December 2011 resource base to 142.4Mt while the total resource base has slightly decreased to 512Mt, refer to Table 1 below. Seam West Borehole Measured Resources (Mt) Ash % (ad) Indicated Resources (Mt) Ash % (ad) Inferred Resources (Mt) Ash % (ad) Total Resources (Mt) Av Seam thickness (m) Product Thermal Whybrow Redbank Creek Thermal / SS Thermal Whynot SS Woodlands Hill SS TOTAL Table 1 - EL 7270, Doyles Creek Measured, Indicated and Inferred Resources (Complete statement at Appendix A Table A1) The substantial increase of Measured Resources further supports the development of the Doyles Creek Underground Mine and Training School with a good spread of resources across all 5 minable coal seams. The total ash in the West Borehole, Redbank Creek and Woodlands Hill Seams will be reduced once the best mining horizon is determined so the Run of Mine product coal has a target ash under 30% prior to washing. Importantly, a substantial increase in Measured and Indicated Resources in the targeted low ash Whynot seam establishes the first 10 years of mine life without the need for a wash plant. The Measured and Indicated Resources in this Statement are sufficient to support an initial 21 years of production from planned operations at Doyles Creek as outlined in the recently published Project Overview document. Planned longwall production is estimated to average 5 million tonnes per annum based upon previously announced Scoping Study outcomes. Pre Feasibility Studies continue and are on track for completion in June 2012 including some aspects ordinarily included in a Bankable Feasibility Study. NuCoal Managing Director Glen Lewis said The JORC upgrade is another significant milestone for the Doyles Creek Project. The results to date continue to highlight the exceptional quality of the Whynot semi soft coking coal seam (av CV 7298 Kcal/kg) with the Whybrow also providing a strong economic foundation for the project. Page 2 of 13
In addition to the exploration success throughout 2011, in the first quarter of 2012 NuCoal announced the Plashett Acquisition, lodged the Doyles Creek Project Overview with Planning NSW, applied for an Assessment Lease over EL 7270 and raised $29m via Institutional Placement. These milestones collectively continue to provide future value accretion for all Shareholders. For further enquiries please contact: Glen Lewis Managing Director Tel: Page 3 of 13
Exploration Methods The borehole database consists of both historic borehole data and data from recent drilling. The historic borehole data included in the geological database comprises 21 partially cored boreholes: five located within EL 7270 and 16 located to the north and south east of the licence area boundary. No wireline (geophysical) logs are available from these historic boreholes. Coal quality data has been collected from many of the historic boreholes drilled in the area, although not all of the older boreholes have penetrated all the seams of interest, nor do they have a full or consistent range of coal quality data. Where the resources are reported using historic data, they are classified as Inferred Resources only. Recent drilling for the NuCoal Doyles Creek Project EL 7270, which commenced on 12 November 2009, was designed for an underground mining prospect. By 1 March 2012, 44 boreholes had been completed. Table 2 below outlines the stage and types of boreholes completed within EL Drilling Stage Planned Partly Cored (HQ) Open Hole Large Diameter Phase Phase Phase 3 (to date) Table 2 - Doyles Creek Drilling Program All of the recent holes have been wireline logged with Density and Neutron tools. Target coal seam core is transported at the earliest available time to a cold storage facility within a NATA accredited coal analysis laboratory (ALS Laboratory, Maitland NSW) to preserve their coking/thermal properties. Target seams are sampled on a ply by ply basis by the senior coal geologist. Aeromagnetic and 2D seismic surveys were completed within EL 7270 in June-July 2011 to complement the drilling exploration. The magnetic survey was completed over the entirety of the licence area, excluding the area directly below and adjacent to the high voltage power lines, located on the eastern edge of the licence area. The 2D seismic survey was conducted over 3 lines in the central and north east areas of the licence area. Borehole coverage is variable over EL 7270 due to land access and topographical constraints. Not all of the 44 completed boreholes intersect all of the target seams due to seam sub-cropping in the north east corner and termination prior to intersecting the Woodlands Hill seam. Page 4 of 13
Target Seam Summary The following explanation of the target seams examine the material geological issues that contribute to the classification of resource areas. West Borehole seam The West Borehole seam is located at the base of the Newcastle Coal Measures and overlies the other target seams in EL 7270 from the Whittingham Coal Measures. The West Borehole seam is continuous across the EL and is generally between two and three metres thick but thins to 1.02m on the western edge of the licence area as the seam splits. The area containing faulting in the central and north-east of the EL has not been adequately defined to be incorporated as a Measured Resource. The West Borehole seam has minimal affect from igneous intrusions, based on current borehole intersections and the magnetic survey completed June Depth of cover ranges from sub-crop in the north eastern area to approx. 240m in the central-southern area of EL Resource estimates for the West Borehole seam apply geostatistical classification categories due to high confidence in the seam based on the continuous and consistent nature of the seam. There are two geostatistical domains used for the resource estimate for the West Borehole seam, each having different classification category spacing. These domains are divided on the western edge of the coalescence zone with the West Borehole Lower seam. West of this coalescence the West Borehole seam thins and borehole frequency is reduced. Whybrow seam The Whybrow seam is the uppermost coal unit of the Whittingham Coal Measures. The seam is continuous within the EL, generally greater than 3.5m thick but up to 5m thick in the central part, thinning to the south-west. The Whybrow seam contains a characteristic mid-seam tuffaceous band ranging in thickness from 0.25m to 0.40m. Depth of cover ranges from sub-crop in the north-eastern area of EL 7270 to approx. 350m in the central-southern area. Igneous intrusions occur in the Whybrow seam in boreholes in the central and northeast area of EL Where the seam has been partly intruded and a mineable thickness is present, this thickness has been modeled (e.g. DCM003 and DCM004) and included in the resource estimate. Redbank Creek seam The Redbank Creek seam resource occurs on the western side of EL The seam consists of three coal splits separated by two tuff bands which vary in thickness from 0.30 to 0.60m. Maximum depth of cover is 370m. The resource in the east of the licence area is limited by: Page 5 of 13
Redbank Creek seam is less than 20m below the Whybrow seam and is not considered a practical mining option; and Significant igneous intrusions occur in the seam. Where the seam has been partly intruded and a mineable thickness is present, this thickness has been modeled and included in the resource estimate (e.g. boreholes DCM003, DCM005 and DCM021). The inclusion of the thinner partially intruded seam is likely to have underestimated seam thickness trends and the resource estimate. Additional drilling is required to accurately define the extent of the Redbank Creek seam affected by igneous intrusions and its impact on the resource estimation. Whynot seam The Whynot seam in EL 7270 is a primary mining target based on consistent thickness and low seam ash. In the northern half of EL 7270 the Upper Whynot split is the main mining target and is generally above 2m thick but thins to less than 1.6m in the western part of the licence area. In the south of the licence area the Upper and Lower Whynot splits coalesce, forming a potential mining section up to 3.9m thick. Depth of cover varies from sub-crop in the north east to 400m in the south of EL The Whynot seam is interpreted to have minimal affect from igneous intrusions based on drilling results and aeromagnetic survey results. Woodlands Hill seam Drilling to the Woodlands Hill seam is more widely spaced than in overlying seams. The Woodlands Hill seam is split and variable over EL 7270; ranging from 2.8 to 4.56m thick. A range of working section options is possible but the seam thickness deteriorates to the east of the EL and also to the west. Further drilling is required to confirm trends of inter-seam bands. The Woodlands Hill seam has minimal affect from igneous intrusions, based on drilling to date. Depth of cover ranges from approximately 200m in the north-east to in excess of 600m to the south of the EL. This estimation discounts an area in the north eastern corner of the EL which has limited data and low confidence in seam development. Page 6 of 13
