1 GEOG322: Geography of Health Course Handout

2 GEOG322: GEOGRAPHY OF HEALTH 2015 GEOG322 provides an introduction to the concepts and applications of health geography. We will examine the influence of physical and social environments on health, investigate inequalities in health, and explore the geographies of health systems and services. Course aims The aims of this course are to: examine what health is, how we can measure it, and how we present health data explore the impact of the physical environment including air quality, water quality and global environmental change on the health of individuals consider the types of physical and social environments that promote health examine health inequalities and their connection to the physical, social, economic and political environment Learning outcomes By the end of the course students should: Be able to critically appraise some key theoretical frameworks in the geography of health. Understand some of the ways in which health is shaped by place and environment Be aware of some of the geographical data and methods associated with the study of health and place. Course content The course content is delivered through a series of linked sections: A: Course Introduction B: Health Inequalities C: Health and the Physical Environment D: Health Care Systems and Services E: Urban Environments and Health F: Social Environments and Health G: Group presentations and Course Conclusion Mode of course delivery 36 x 1 hour lectures 5 x 2 hour labs Lectures Monday Wednesday Friday 2:00pm-3:00pm 9:00am-10:00am 1:00pm-2:00pm Labs and tutorials The times and locations of labs vary throughout the semester. Please check the teaching schedule and confirm details for each lab using My Timetable or the Course Information System. 2

3 Assessment Your learning for GEOG322 will be assessed through coursework (worth 60% in total) and a final exam (40%, date to be confirmed when the university examination timetable is published). There are three items of coursework: Coursework item Due Worth 1. Essay Fri 1 st April before 5pm 25% 2. Policy briefing paper (group presentation and individual report) Fri 3 rd June before 5pm 25% 3. Lab participation Throughout the semester 10% Assignment 1 Essay/Research Review (25%): This assignment asks you to select one disease or illness to discuss the relative importance of the physical and social environment for its incidence, with respect to the published evidence. A more detailed handout will be distributed in the first week of the course. Assignment 2 - Policy Briefing Paper (25%): The second assignment asks you to prepare a briefing paper on a current health policy issue. The briefing paper requires you to provide a critical review of the evidence with respect to a particular health policy issue and, on the basis of this evidence, to make a series of policy recommendations. This is a group project, involving an individual written report and a group presentation, both of which are assessed. A more detailed handout will be distributed at the beginning of Term 2. Submission of assignments Both assignments must be submitted electronically through Learn (no need for paper submission). This course will make use of the Turnitin software ( which enables you to review your use of sources, and to ensure you have acknowledged or referenced them appropriately. Turnitin will identify papers containing unacknowledged material from other authors or students (i.e. plagiarism), and allow you to rectify this before submission. More details of how to submit your assignments through Turnitin are available on Learn. Class Participation It is important that you participate in all aspects of GEOG322 and this includes the labs/discussion sessions. Consequently 10% of your final grade is based on participation. This is broken down as follows: Attendance/completion of labs (5%, comprised of 1% for each lab) Attendance/participation in the poster presentations (5%) 3

4 Lab Programme The lab programme is designed to follow up aspects of the course that cannot be covered in lectures. In addition to set tasks, the weekly labs will also involve you breaking up into smaller groups and discussing some of the set readings for the lectures that week. Before you come to the lab you will need to complete the readings which will already have been mentioned in lectures. It is important that you do this since it will help you understand some of the key issues in the geography of health and the relevance of a geographical perspective in understanding health problems and health policy. It will also aid you in your learning and you will gain more out the course from such a commitment. Some of the labs will also involve you working with a variety of qualitative and quantitative methods, various types of data and different statistical packages. In order to fully understand the lab material, you may need to work on the lab tasks again in your own time. 7 Reading The lectures in the course only provide an introduction to key topics and debates. Consequently a very important part of your learning is to follow up on the topics discussed in lectures through independent reading and research. You are encouraged to gain a broader understanding of the geography of health by going beyond references just relevant to your assignments. As this is a 300 level course we place a high priority on the extent to which you have done additional reading and come to terms with a range of theoretical perspectives in contemporary health geography. You are expected to complete the required reading. A key reading will be set for each lecture and a number of other readings will also be recommended. Links to all set readings will be placed on Learn. What is expected of you: to be prepared to discuss the set readings in lectures and labs to spend at least 4-5 hours a week on your readings to be able to refer to these readings and demonstrate that you have read and understood them in the final exam Key Books There is no one book which covers all components of the course, but the following volumes provide good overviews of links between geography and health, and of debates and issues within medical and health geography.
