More than 600,000 trees shade our streets, sidewalks, and homes. They make our city cooler, our air cleaner, and our neighborhoods more beautiful. Thanks to street tree inventories in 1995 and 2005, we can even quantify the dollar value of the benefits that our trees provide. Trees Count!

TreesCount! Data Jam Civic Engagement through Open Data Jacqueline Lu Director of Data Analytics Innovation & Performance Management
What is NYC Open Data? NYC s Open Data Law, passed by City Council in 2012, requires city agencies to make data they create available for use by the public on a web portal. More than 1,300 datasets are currently available online at 62
Why Open Data? Open Data has the potential to change the way citizens and community groups interact with and collaborate with government to effect change in their neighborhoods. NYC s vision of Open Data For All is that Open Data is an invitation for anyone, anytime, anywhere to engage with New York City. 63
Voluntreers in Action Voluntreers came in all ages and sizes: some families came out with their kids, and whole classes signed up to help. 64
Voluntreers in Action Left: A group of voluntreers at a supervised training. Right: Voluntreer using a survey wheel to measure tree position. Last year, Parks was the largest purchaser of these survey wheels in North America. 65

Goal: June 4, 2016 Civic Hall, NYC Foster collaboration between NYC Parks, tree-oriented community groups and volunteers, and the civic technology community to use open data to improve our care of the urban forest. 67
Event Design: Needs Based Approach Volunteers Community Partners NYC Parks staff Surveys and discussions Online survey and follow-up calls Workshops Source Questions for Challenge Development Identified demand on learning how to work with the data 68
Voluntreers Interest in TreesCount! data Where are the tree deserts? Where are more trees needed? Links to education, public health, salaries spreading trees to less privileged neighborhoods Compare tree data to population density, zoning, income Which tree species do well on hightraffic streets Changes over time Comparison to the 2005 census Where are the healthiest trees?
