Note: The files are prepared for class use. Please do not use them for other purposes. 4

5 0.4 Prerequisite 0.5 Textbooks and references All statistical, mathematical, and computational techniques are given in the class. However, it is desirable to study basic statistics and basic mathematics (linear algebra) in advance. No textbook is specified. Reference books will be introduced in each chapter. 0.6 Grading Reports Submission of at least two (out of four-five) reports is required. To write your report, you can consult anything including textbooks and the Internet, if necessary. You can submit your report by either handing in its hardcopy or sending an with an electronic file. Most file formats used by word processing software are readable, but Microsoft Word format is preferable. No examination is conducted. 0.7 One (unusual) application of GIS: Sadahiros map in Japan Sadahiro is a rare last name in Japan. The list of Sadahiros in the NTT telephone directory, Sadahiro sounds like a first name to Japanese people. They always say Is this really a last name? Is this a reasonable misunderstanding? The data were converted into spatial data by geocoding. The point data were aggregated in each prefecture. 5

END However, Sadahiro is used as the first name only for men, and the householders listed in the telephone directory are usually male. My conclusion: Sadahiro is used as the last name more frequently than the first name. 6
