Installation, Opration & Maintnanc Instructions 1200 C Split Tub furnacs (3-zon) typs HZS & TVS This manual is for th guidanc of oprators of th abov Carbolit products and should b rad bfor th furnac is connctd to th lctricity supply. Sction COTETS pag 1.0 Introduction Installation Opration Maintnanc Rpairs & Rplacmnts Fault Analysis Circuit Dtails Fuss & Powr Sttings Spcifications 16 Manuals ar supplid sparatly for th furnac controllrs (and ovrtmpratur controllr whn fittd). Plas rad th controllr manuals bfor oprating th furnac. MF

1.0 ITRODUCTIO 1.1 Modls in th Rang Th HZS and TVS rang of 1200 C split tub furnacs is availabl in a varity of styls and orintations. Th principal varitis ar: vrtical TVS, without outr caswork, optionally with a wall brackt, for customr mounting; vrtical TVS as abov, with a stand. On half of th furnac is fixd to th stand. This is known as a nar hing arrangmnt; vrtical TVS with a far hing arrangmnt. Both halvs of th furnac hing from th stand; horizontal HZS, in an outr cas; horizontal HZS as abov, but fittd to an -stand which can b usd in a horizontal or vrtical position. In all th abov th furnac hating sction and th lctrical charactristics ar th sam. Th standard control arrangmnt for ths 3-zon furnacs is for slav nd zon controllrs to follow th tmpratur of th main controllr. Th nd zons ar quit short 150mm in all modls. Thr ar optional altrnativs to this control arrangmnt, including indpndnt control of th hating zons, and th furnacs may also b ordrd with qual zon lngths. ot that th original dsign intnt in ths 3-zon modls is to achiv an xtndd uniform singl zon. Whn indpndnt control is fittd, som tmpratur diffrnc can b achivd, but Carbolit can mak no spcific warranty as to th xtnt to which this is possibl. 1.2 Voltag and Powr Control All modls in this rang, from March 2001, ar supplid with hating lmnts dsignd for us ovr th voltag rang 200V-240V or 3-phas quivalnts. Th Carbolit control systm incorporats a powr limit which ffctivly limits th voltag to 208V. It is most important that any altrnativ systm providd by th customr should b abl to limit th powr accordingly. S sctions 3.7 and Switchs and ights Instrumnt switch: whn th instrumnt switch is opratd th tmpratur control circuit is nrgisd. Hat Switch: th switch disconncts powr to th hating lmnts; unlss this switch is off thr is a dangr of lctric shock whn insrting objcts into th furnac Hat ight: th adjacnt light glows or flashs to indicat that powr is bing supplid to th lmnts 1.4 Warning Symbols DAGER of lctrical shock rad any warning printd by this symbol. DAGER rad any warning printd by this symbol. DAGER hot surfac. Rad any warning printd by this symbol. WARIG: all surfacs of a furnac may b hot. 2 MF

2.0 ISTAATIO 2.1 Unpacking & Handling Whn unpacking or moving th furnac always lift it by its cas or main body. vr lift it by its insulation or by a fittd work tub. If possibl us two popl to carry th furnac and rmot control box. Rmov any packing matrial from insid th furnac bfor us. If an optional or spcial stand is sparatly supplid, assmbl th furnac on to it. Ths modls may b supplid for customr mounting and may rquir customr prparation of mounting componnts bfor installation. OTE: This product contains Rfractory Cramic Fibr (bttr dscribd as Alumino Silicat Wool) for prcautions and advic in handling this matrial s th Rpairs and Rplacmnts sction. 2.2 Siting Plac th furnac in a wll vntilatd room, away from othr sourcs of hat, and on a surfac which is rsistant to accidntal spillag of hot matrials. Do not mount th furnac on an inflammabl surfac. Ensur that thr is fr spac around th furnac. Do not obstruct any of th vnts in th control box: thy ar ndd to kp th controls cool. Ensur that th control box is placd in such a way that it can b quickly switchd off or disconnctd from th lctrical supply - s blow. 2.3 Stting Up If th furnac is supplid with a work tub or any accssoris fit ths into position. For optimum tmpratur uniformity, insulating plugs should b placd in th tub nds as shown in fig.1. With a long innr work tub, th stm of th plug assmbly should lin up with th nd of th tub as in fig.2. Alignmnt of radiation shilds is similar to that of plugs. With ths modls, split nd plugs ar supplid; unlss ordrd for a spcific tub siz, ths rquir shaping to fit th tub or work pic: us a round fil. If stainlss stl sals with gas inlts ar supplid thy ar to b fittd as shown in fig.3; th stm of any insulating plug should touch th sal. Stainlss stl sals for vrtical us: a hook and y arrangmnt holds th uppr insulating plug assmbly; altrnativly a gland nut. Horizontal modls: if havy fittings ar to b clampd to th nd of an xtndd work tub thy can incras th bnding strss at th cntr of th tub. Support such fittings in such a way that xpansion of th tub is allowd. If a mtal work tub is bing usd in th furnac, nsur that it is arthd for oprator safty. MF

2.4 Elctrical Connctions Connction by a qualifid lctrician is rcommndd. Th furnacs covrd by this manual may b ordrd for singl phas A.C. supply, which may b iv to utral non-rvrsibl, iv to utral rvrsibl or iv to iv. Som modls can b supplid for thr phas us (and if so, ar univrsal s sction 2.5). Chck th furnac rating labl bfor connction. Th supply voltag should agr with th voltag on th labl, and th supply capacity should b sufficint for th amprag on th labl. If th actual supply is not th sam as th voltag on th labl, thn th controllr powr limit may nd to b adjustd: st th Hatr Switch to off, connct th furnac and s sction 3.7. Th supply should b fusd at th nxt siz qual to or highr than th amprag on th labl. A tabl of th most common fus ratings is also givn in sction 8.1 of this manual. Whr a supply cabl is prsnt thr ar intrnal supply fuss; customr fusing is prfrrd but not ssntial. Furnac with supply cabl: ithr wir dirctly to an isolator or fit with a lin plug. Furnac without supply cabl: a prmannt connction to a fusd and isolatd supply should b mad to th intrnal trminals aftr tmporary rmoval of th furnac back panl. Connction by lin plug: th plug should b within rach of th oprator, and should b quickly rmovabl. Connction to isolating switch: this should oprat on both conductors (singl phas) or on all liv conductors (thr phas), and should b within rach of th oprator. Th supply MUST incorporat an arth (ground). COECTIO DETAIS supply typ Supply Trminal labl Cabl colour iv-utral Rvrsibl or iv-iv 1-phas Brown To liv to ithr powr conductor Blu To nutral to th othr powr conductor PE Grn/Yllow To arth (ground) to arth (ground) supply Trminal labl Cabl colour 2- or 3-phas 1 Black to phas 1 2 Black to phas 2 3 Black to phas 3 xcpt 2-phas ight Blu to nutral xcpt dlta PE Grn/Yllow to arth (ground) Do not connct a furnac ordrd for thr phas us to a singl phas supply or to th wrong typ of thr phas supply xcpt as indicatd in sctions 2.5 and Univrsal Wiring (yar 2000 onwards) Whn (and only whn) ordrd for 3-phas us ths furnacs ar supplid in a form in which thy can b asily rwird btwn 1-phas and 3-phas supplis. This applis to 3-phas+ and 3- phas dlta in th rangs 380/220V 415/240V and V, but dos not apply to 3-phas star without nutral (.g 380V or 440V). To altr th configuration, rmov th control box back panl and altr th connctions btwn th supply trminal block and th EMC filtrs, using th appropriat diagram from sction 7.9. Modls ordrd for singl phas only ar not affctd and cannot b convrtd to 3-phas. If in doubt, plas consult Carbolit. 4 MF

3.0 OPERATIO Th instructions for oprating th tmpratur controllr ar givn in a sparat manual. If th furnac is fittd with a tim switch, s also th supplmntary manual MS03. If cascad control is fittd, s th supplmntary manual MS zon Control Mthods Th modls in this manual ar typically dsignd to achiv an xtndd uniform tmpratur zon by th us of thr control zons, with h control zons linkd so that nd zons follow th cntral zon in a mastr-slav approach; thr ar two ways of doing this. Altrnativly, indpndnt control zons may b ordrd. Thr ar thus thr control mthods (A, B & C). A. Back-to-Back Thrmocoupls This is th most commonly supplid option. Th cntral zon of th work tub is controlld dirctly by th cntral tmpratur controllr. Each nd zon thrmocoupl is wird in opposition to a cntral rfrnc thrmocoupl, and th rsulting small voltag diffrnc whn th zons ar at diffrnt tmpraturs is usd by th nd zon controllr. Th circuit diagram in sction 7.0 shows th thrmocoupl arrangmnt. St th "stpoint" of th nd zon controllrs to zro. Altrnativly, a small tmpratur diffrnc (offst) can b cratd by stting a non-zro valu, but th sum of th main controllr st-point and th slav controllr offst MUST OT xcd th furnac maximum tmpratur. To altr th stpoint (with th display at hom ), prss Down or Up onc to display th stpoint; prss again or hold down to adjust it. Th display rturns to th masurd tmpratur offst whn no ky is prssd for 0.5 sconds. Somtims a furnac using this typ of control dos not cool down this may dpnd on th customr work load. Th nd controllrs striv to rmain at th cntral tmpratur, and prvnt cooling. Should this occur, plas contact Carbolit s tchnical dpartmnt Slav Controllr avigation Diagram Hom ist 0.0 C/F/k C/F/k Zon tmpratur diffrnc; us / to accss offst stpoint Output ist op OP.Hi powr limit stting, if prsnt Accss ist ACCS code hom list for factory accss to lists and paramtrs not availabl to th oprator B. Rtransmission of Stpoint using Broadcast comms Whn this is ordrd thr ar thr indpndnt thrmocoupls connctd to th thr controllrs. Th controllrs ar linkd togthr, th cntral controllr communicating th dsird stpoint to th nd controllrs. Additional communication moduls ar fittd in th controllrs, rathr than an additional thrmocoupl as in A. Th communication btwn th controllrs of th Eurothrm 3000 sris is known as Broadcast comms. It is possibl to switch off th linkd control and allow th controllrs to work indpndntly. In lvl 2 of th nd zon controllrs (s controllr oprating instruction), scroll to -r. Whr th nd zon controllr is a 3216 us th up down and slct O. Whr th nd zon controllr MF

is a 3508 us th up down to slct SP1, (SP1 = ocal, and SP2 = Rmot). Thr is no nd to altr th cntr controllr. It is possibl to us local trim in th nd zon controllrs to ntr a positiv or ngativ adjustmnt from th cntr zon tmpratur. Onc ntrd this trim will always b addd or subtractd from th rtransmittd st tmpratur. In lvl 2 of th nd zon controllr (s controllr oprating instruction), scroll to OC.T (local trim) and us th up down ntr th dsird positiv or ngativ diffrnc to b addd to th nd zon st tmpratur. Thr is no nd to altr th cntr controllr. C. Indpndnt Control In this cas th thr controllrs ar compltly indpndnt. ot that it is not possibl to maintain vry diffrnt zon tmpraturs bcaus of hat transfr within th work tub. 3.2 Oprating Cycl Th furnac is fittd with an Instrumnt switch. Th switch cuts off powr to th control circuit. Thr is also a Hatr switch which can b usd to disconnct powr to th lmnts. Connct th furnac to th lctrical supply. Oprat th instrumnt switch to activat th tmpratur controllr. Th controllr bcoms illuminatd and gos through a short tst cycl. Control mthods A & B: St th slav (nd zon) controllrs to th dsird offst tmpratur, usually zro. St th main (cntral) tmpratur controllr to th dsird stpoint or program. S sction 3.1 and/or th sparat manual(s) for th controllr(s). Control mthod C: St th thr controllrs to th dsird tmpraturs. S th sparat manual(s) for th controllr(s). Ovrtmpratur option only. If th ovrtmpratur controllr has not yt bn st as rquird, st it and activat it according to th instructions in th appropriat manual. Switch on th Hatr switch, locatd on th instrumnt panl. Unlss a tim switch is fittd and is off, th furnac starts to hat up. Th Hat light(s) glow stadily at first and thn flash as th furnac approachs th dsird tmpratur or a program stpoint. Ovrtmpratur option only. If th ovrtmpratur trip oprats thn an indicator in th ovrtmpratur controllr flashs, and th hating lmnts ar isolatd. Find and corrct th caus bfor rstting th ovrtmpratur controllr according th instructions supplid. To switch off powr to th hating lmnts, us th Hatr Switch. To switch th furnac off, us both th Hatr switch and th Instrumnt switch. If th furnac is to b lft off unattndd, isolat it from th lctrical supply. 3.3 Gnral Oprating Advic Hating lmnt lif is shortnd by us at tmpraturs clos to maximum. Do not lav th furnac at high tmpratur whn not rquird. Th maximum tmpratur is shown on th furnac rating labl and on th back pag of this manual. ightwight cramic fibr insulation can asily b markd by accidntal contact. Som fin cracks may b visibl on th surfac of th insulation, or may dvlop in th surfac of th chambr du to progrssiv shrinkag of th insulation matrials. Cracks ar not usually dtrimntal to th functioning or th safty of th furnac. 3.4 Oprator Safty Th cramic matrials usd in furnac manufactur bcom lctrically conductiv to som xtnt at high tmpraturs. In ths modls thr ar partially xposd hating coils in th chambr and thr is dangr of contact vn with th furnac closd. DO OT us any conductiv tools within th work tub without isolating it. If a mtal work tub is usd, it must b arthd (groundd). 6 MF

Th furnac incorporats a safty switch which intrrupts th hating lmnt circuit whn it is opnd. This prvnts th usr touching a liv hating lmnt, but also prvnts th furnac from hating up whn opn. Th opration of this switch should b chckd priodically s sction Thr is also a Hatr switch which may b usd to intrrupt powr to th lmnts. Switch off th Hatr switch whnvr loading or unloading th furnac. Th lmnts ar isolatd whn th Hatr switch is OFF. Avoid burns: furnac surfacs can b hot. Bfor you rmov a hot objct from th furnac mak sur you hav a saf plac to put it down. 3.5 Tub if A cramic work tub may b crackd if workpics ar insrtd too quickly or at tmpraturs blow 900 C (whn th tub is mor brittl). arg pics should also b hatd slowly to nsur that larg tmpratur diffrncs do not aris. Poor thrmal contact should b ncouragd btwn th workpic and th tub; crucibls or boats should b of low thrmal mass and should hav ft to rduc th contact with th tub (fig. 4). Do not st too high a hating rat. arg diamtr tubs ar mor suscptibl to thrmal shock than smallr. Tubs which xtnd byond th hatd part of th furnac ar mor at risk. A gnral rul for maximum hating rat is 400/intrnal diamtr ( C/min); for 75mm i/d tubs this coms to 5 C pr minut. Th controllr can b st to limit th hating rat. 3.6 Prssur Work tubs ar not abl to accpt high intrnal prssur. Whn gas sals or similar fittings ar in us, th gas prssur should b rstrictd to a maximum of 0.2 bar (3 psi). A prssur of about half of that should normally b sufficint to achiv th dsird flow rat. Th customr must nsur that th xhaust path from th tub is not blockd, so that xcss prssur dos not occur. 3.7 Powr Adjustmnt Th furnac control systm incorporats lctronic powr limiting. Th powr limit paramtr OP.Hi is accssibl, and can b usd to adjust th furnac to th actual supply voltag. Th modls covrd by this manual (March 2001 onwards) ar dsignd for us ovr th rang of voltags 200V-250V (or, if ordrd, 100V-125V), and th powr limit paramtr is st accordingly. Ths modls may b rlocatd to a diffrnt voltag within th rang: th powr limit should b rst to match th voltag. S sction 8.2. To altr th powr limit St th Hatr Switch to Off to prvnt hating whil adjusting th powr limit. Prss Pag until op (output list) is displayd. Prss Scroll until OP.Hi (Output High) is displayd. Prss Down or Up onc to display th valu of OP.Hi (it is good practic to writ down th original valu). To altr th paramtr to th dsird valu us Down or Up. A powr stting of zro prvnts th furnac from hating: usful for dmonstrating th controls without taking powr. Do not incras th powr limit simply to gt mor powr. Th lmnts could burn out, or a fus could blow. 3.8 Running at ow Tmpraturs Th powr limit may b adjustd to a low lvl to achiv bttr control whn running th furnac at a low tmpratur. o hard and fast ruls can b givn, but, as an xampl, to run at MF

tmpraturs only up to 600 C try a powr limit of 50%. Control stability may fall off again if a stting blow about 40% is usd. Bfor changing th powr limit, rcord its factory stting for possibl futur us. 4.0 MAITEACE 4.1 Gnral Maintnanc Prvntiv rathr than ractiv maintnanc is to b prfrrd. Th typ and frquncy dpnds on furnac us: th following ar rcommndd Claning Chck th furnac intrior. If soot dposits hav formd, rmov by hating up to maximum tmpratur for on hour without load. Th furnac outr surfac may b cland with a damp cloth. Do not allow watr to ntr th intrior of th cas or chambr. Do not clan with organic solvnts Safty Switch Th safty switch opration mntiond in 3.3 should b chckd priodically to nsur that hating lmnts ar isolatd whn th furnac is opnd. In normal conditions th safty arrangmnt should outlast th furnac, but it could b affctd by rough handling, a corrosiv nvironmnt or work matrials, or xcptional frquncy of us. A qualifid lctrician should chck that th supply to th hating lmnts is cut, with and without powr bing on, whn th furnac is opn partially and fully; it is important that isolation is not just marginally achivd. Th chck is bst mad on th lmnt trminals aftr rmoval of th covrs: probing th lmnt surfac insid th furnac could b inconclusiv bcaus of surfac oxidation. ot that all liv supply wirs of a 3-phas supply, and both liv and nutral of a 1- phas supply, should b isolatd whn th door is opnd. 4.2 Calibration Aftr prolongd us th controllr and/or thrmocoupl could rquir rcalibration. This would b important for procsss which rquir accurat tmpratur radings or which us th furnac clos to its maximum tmpratur. A quick chck using an indpndnt thrmocoupl and tmpratur indicator should b mad from tim to tim to dtrmin whthr full calibration is rquird. Ths itms can b supplid by Carbolit. Dpnding on th controllr, th controllr manual may contain calibration instructions. 4.3 Aftr Sals Srvic Carbolit s srvic division (Carbolit Enginring Srvics) has a tam of Srvic Enginrs capabl of rpair, calibration and prvntiv maintnanc of furnac and ovn products at our customrs prmiss throughout th world. W also sll spars by mail ordr. A tlphon call or fax oftn nabls a fault to b diagnosd and th ncssary spar part dspatchd. Each furnac has its own rcord card at Carbolit. In all corrspondnc plas quot th srial numbr, modl typ and voltag givn on th rating labl of th furnac. Th srial numbr and modl typ ar also givn on th front of this booklt whn supplid with a furnac. To contact Carbolit Enginring Srvics or Carbolit s th back pag of this manual. 4.4 Rcommndd Spars Kits Carbolit can supply individual spars, or a kit of th itms most likly to b rquird. Ordring a kit in advanc can sav tim in th vnt of a brakdown. Each kit compriss on of ach typ of thrmocoupl, on solid stat rlay, and two hating lmnts (modls /900: 2 of ach typ). Whn ordring spars plas quot th modl dtails as rqustd abov. 8 MF

5.0 REPAIRS & REPACEMETS 5.1 Safty Warning Disconnction from Supply Always nsur that th furnac is disconnctd from th supply bfor rpair work is carrid out. 5.2 Safty Warning - Rfractory Fibrous Insulation Insulation mad from High Tmpratur Insulation Wool Rfractory Cramic Fibr, (bttr dscribd as Alumino Silicat Wool) (ASW) This product contains alumino silicat wool products in its thrmal insulation. Ths matrials may b in th form of blankt or flt, formd board or shaps, minral wool slab or loos fill wool. Whilst thr is no vidnc of any long trm halth hazards, w strongly rcommnd that safty prcautions ar takn whnvr th matrials ar handld. Exposur to fibrous dust may caus rspiratory disas. Whn handling th matrial always us an approvd rspiratory protction quipmnt (RPE-i.. FFP3), y protction, glovs and long slvd clothing. Avoid braking up wast matrial. Dispos of wast in sald containrs. Aftr handling rins xposd skin with watr bfor washing gntly with soap (not dtrgnt). Wash work clothing sparatly. Bfor commncing any major rpairs w rcommnd rfrnc to th Europan Association rprsnting th High Tmpratur Insulation Wool industry ( W can provid furthr information on rqust. Altrnativly our srvic division can quot for any rpairs to b carrid out at your prmiss or ours. 5.3 Tmpratur Controllr Rplacmnt 301. This controllr is fittd to th back of th control panl; in many modls this can b sparatd from th bas by rmoval of two scrws. Rfr to th dtaild instructions supplid with th rplacmnt controllr. Bfor handling th controllr: war an anti-static wrist strap or othrwis avoid any possibility of damag to th unit by static lctricity. 2132, 3216, 3508 tc. Eas apart th two lugs at th sid; grip th instrumnt and withdraw it from its slv; push in th rplacmnt. 5.4 Solid-stat Rlay Rplacmnt Disconnct th furnac from th supply and rmov th back panl from th bas or control box.. Mak a not of how th wirs ar connctd to th solid stat rlay, and disconnct thm. Rmov th solid stat rlay from th bas panl or aluminium plat. Rplac and rconnct th solid stat rlay nsuring that th hat-conducting thrmal pad is sandwichd btwn th rlay and th bas panl or aluminium plat. Altrnativly a thin layr of whit, hat-conducting silicon past may b applid btwn th nw rlay and th plat. Rplac th rmovd panl. 5.5 Thrmocoupl Rplacmnt Th covrings and guards which must b rmovd to gain accss to th thrmocoupls dpnd on th modl, and any mounting options or fittings. Study th furnac layout and ask if in doubt. Disconnct th furnac from th supply, and rmov covrs and guards as ncssary. MF

Mak a not of th thrmocoupl connctions Typ colour codings ar: ngativ = whit, positiv = pink (old modls: ngativ = blu, positiv = orang). Disconnct th thrmocoupl from its trminal block and withdraw it from its shath (th narrowbor built-in tub) and rmov any brokn bits of thrmocoupl. Bnd th nw thrmocoupl carfully to match th shap of th original (working from th trminal nd). Should th ovrall lngth diffr from that of th original providd, nsur that th tip nds up th sam distanc from th nd as it did in th original. Insrt th nw thrmocoupl into position, rstoring any rmovd porclain spacrs, and nsuring corrct polarity. R-assmbl th furnac. 5.6 Fus Rplacmnt Fuss ar markd on th circuit diagram (sction 0) with typ cods,.g. F1, F2. A list of th corrct fuss is givn in sction 8.1. Th fuss fittd dpnd on modl and voltag. If any fus has faild, it is advisabl for an lctrician to chck th intrnal circuits. Rplac any faild fuss with th corrct typ. For safty rasons do not fit largr capacity fuss without first consulting Carbolit. Th fuss ar nar th cabl ntry point, with accss by rmoval of th control box back panl. 5.7 Elmnt Rplacmnt Plas s safty not plas war a fac mask. HZS and TVS with far hing: Rmov th thr scrws from ach nd and lift out th half-circular insulation assmbly. Mak a plan of all th cabl connctions and disconnct th cabls. Rmov th thrmocoupls by withdrawing thm from th shaths built into th lmnts. Rmov th plats through which th lmnt tails ar locatd. Rmov th kp plats from ach sid of th insulation assmbly. ift out th lmnt to b rplacd; sav any insulation slvs for possibl rus. Bnd or cut th nw lmnt tails as ncssary, and fit any insulation slvs; fd th tails through and fit th lmnt into plac. Rfit th kp plats on ach sid. Rfit th tail trmination plats, nsuring that th lmnt tails do not touch any mtal parts. Rfit th thrmocoupls and cnnct all th wiring according to th plan prviously mad to complt th rassmbly.
