The AutoChem II 2920 fully automated chemisorption analyzer provides your laboratory with the ability to conduct a comprehensive array of highly precise studies of chemical adsorption and temperature-programmed reactions. With this single instrument you can acquire valuable information about the physical properties of your catalyst, catalyst support, or other materials. It is the instrument preferred by researchers investigating active metal surface area, surface acidity, distribution and strength of active sites, BET surface area, and more. The AutoChem II 2920 performs pulse chemisorption, temperature-programmed reduction (TPR), desorption (TPD), oxidation (TPO), and reaction analyses and does it automatically. Gas Inlets and Control Each of the three gas ports (prep, carrier, and analysis) contains four inlets providing the capability to perform four-gas sequential experiments such as TPR/TPO cycle experiments. The AutoChem II 2920 is equipped with four high-precision, independently calibrated mass flow controllers providing extremely accurate, programmable gas control. The ability to control gas flow with accuracy assures a stable baseline and accurate determinations of gas volumes. Detector The AutoChem II 2920 s innovative thermal conductivity detector (TCD) is capable of detecting minute differences in the concentration of gases flowing into and out of the sample reactor. The corrosion-resistant filaments can withstand exposure to gases and vapors. The filaments are operated at constant temperature to prevent thermal runaway, which can destroy filaments in other systems. Measurements acquired by the detector feature notable linearity throughout the range of gas concentrations. This means that a single calibration is often sufficient for all peaks regardless of their amplitude.

S O F T WA R E T he AutoChem II 2920 is controlled by powerful Windows based operating software. It provides all the convenient features you are accustomed to when using Windows-based programs. Point-and-click operations, pull-down menus, access to multiple printers and network drives, multitasking capability, and much more are featured in the AutoChem II 2920 user interface. In addition the familiar Windows format reduces the time required for training new operators, resulting in fast start-up and increased productivity. Current users of other Windows-based Micromeritics instruments will find a familiar user interface with very similar analysis, data reduction, and reporting, allowing productive use of the instrument almost immediately. Instrument Schematic Display The integrated area of the detector peak signal maintains a highly constant proportionality to the quantity of gas regardless of the magnitude of the reaction. The detector signal can be zeroed and/or inverted prior to each experiment in the analysis. The Instrument Schematic Display provides information on the status of the analysis, the availability of analysis and pretreatment gases and vapors, direction of the gas flow, TCD reading, and more. In Manual Mode, this screen enables you to control valves and heat zones manually by simply placing the mouse pointer on the desired valve or zone and clicking the mouse button. Furnace Analysis Protocol Sequencing A clamshell-type furnace can heat the quartz sample reactor up to 1100 C. The AutoChem II 2920 permits any number of ramp rates and sequences to facilitate customized experiments. The included KwikCool feature enables you to cool the furnace temperature rapidly down to near ambient, reducing analysis time and increasing throughput. With the CryoCooler option, analysis temperatures can be ramped over the range of -70 C to 1100 C. The AutoChem II 2920 allows the most complex experiments and the Micromeritics standard user interface makes them easy. You can select from a number of preprogrammed experiments or create your own. To set up and start a customized experiment, you simply point and click on the pretreatment and analysis task you wish to perform and specify criteria such as temperature ramp rates, gas flow rates, and data measurement intervals. You simply drag them to the desired sequence. Once the analysis protocol is established, you start the experiment and the AutoChem II 2920 does the rest. No further operator intervention is required. The operating software is so flexible you can make modifications to the analysis protocol at any time, even during an analysis. Temperature-Controlled Zones Four internal temperature-controlled zones can be heated independently of each other to as much as 150 C. This permits studies using condensable vapors by preventing condensation in valves and lines. Low Internal Volume The extremely low volume of the internal plumbing minimizes peak spreading and significantly enhances peak resolution. Furthermore, it reduces the time lag between the sample reactions and the corresponding detector response. Gas Injection Analysis gas may be introduced to the carrier stream by a precision automated loop. A calibrated, conveniently located septum is also provided through which analysis gas can be injected by means of a calibrated syringe. Data Reduction and Reporting The AutoChem II 2920 provides graphic reports for BET surface area, pulse chemisorption, heat of adsorption, and more. In addition, it has an integrated GRAMS/32 peak editor package that provides peak selection and editing, integration, data smoothing, rescaling, and overlay capability. This package allows you to remove peaks that are of no interest and manipulate the scaling and baselines of desired peaks. In addition, the AutoChem II provides for input of mass spectrometer data files. This allows you to use the GRAMS/32 package to manipulate the TCD and mass spectrometer data simultaneously. In short, it provides the high level of versatility, reliability, and accuracy required in today s research labs. The reporting feature also provides the capability of plotting two externally derived signals against time or sample temperature; for example, output from a mass spectrometer or gas chromatograph. Numerous plots can be overlaid to assist in comparing various plots from the same sample analysis or a series of analyses.

4 Reproducibility and repeatability are important tests to confirm experimental procedures. Micromeritics AutoChem II 2920 generates a detailed sample and analysis information report that can be used to set up the exact experimental conditions on another instrument, or to compare between analyses on the same instrument to assure conformity. Also featured is an Analysis Log report that provides a chronological list of each action performed by the instrument during an analysis sequence and may be used for refining analysis methods or even as a diagnosis tool for applications difficulties. Reports such as these are expected from a high-quality instrument designed for catalysis research. Exhaust Gas Analysis Port allows sampling of analysis gas after it has passed the thermal conductivity detector for analysis by a mass spectrometer, infrared spectroscope, or gas chromatograph. Sampling can be controlled from the AutoChem II 2920 operating program. FlowThru Quartz Sample Tubes can be heated to 1100 C and are designed for easy cleaning. Optional Vapor Generator allows analysis using vaporized liquids in an inert carrier stream. Optional CryoCooler enables you to start an analysis at subambient temperature. Mass Spectrometer Port located immediately before the TCD, allows virtually simultaneous detection on both the TCD and the mass spectrometer. Four gas inlets each for the preparation, carrier, and loop gases permit four-gas sequential experiments, such as TPR/TPO cycles. Internal gas blending eliminates the need to purchase expensive mixed gases for experiments such as TPR and TPO. Mass Spectrometer files can be input for simultaneous manipulation of data.
