1 Illinois Board of Higher Education ILLINOIS ARTICULATION INITIATIVE To Facilitate Interinstitutional Transfer Illinois Community Board 431 East Adams, Second Floor 401 East Capitol Avenue Springfield, IL Springfield, IL tel: 217/ tel: 217/ fax: 217/ fax: 217/ IAI Panel Minutes, April 25 th, 2002 Members Present: Bell, Chrisman, Knoedler, Kotowski, Larson, Laxpati, Mirman, Olson, Schroeder, Solomon, Wiggins Members Sending Regrets: Podlasek Members Absent Riley, Van Roekel Staff: Schleuning Review of Membership List Introductions and Reports from Institutions Congratulations to Joe, in his new role as Dean. UIC reported that they will go through ABET accreditation next fall. SIUC is due, and UIUC has just finished their visit. Minutes Approved Sub-Group Membership Reviewed and Approved Course Review The panel noted in a quick review of the physics and calculus courses that pre-requisites were not clear and credit hours were not noted in some cases. Corrections to website. It is not clear on the website that the credit is for all three physics courses (911, 912 and 913). The phrase part of a 3-course sequence will be included in the course description. Discussion: Whether Calculus Should Be a Pre- or Co-requisite for Calculus-Based Physics I A petition was submitted to the panel by an institution that currently lists calculus as a co-requisite with Calculus-Based Physics I. Universities are not consistent. The question to be answered: Will it transfer to the vast majority of universities? ABET guidelines are unclear on this matter. The case was made that calculus-based means just that that the course is built on the assumption that calculus has been

2 learned. Several members argued for the highest common denominator in the state. The panel then decided to query the new physics panel on what their recommendation will be. If they choose corequisite, for example, it will affect students transferring to some institutions in the state that require calculus as a pre-requisite. This also affects the awarding of the AES, since the AES requires calculus as a pre-requisite. The Co-chairs will draft a letter to the physics panel to explore options and recommendations. Next Meeting The next meeting will be held on Thursday, October 24, in Springfield at the Board of Higher Education.
